I kept hearing about this place being voted the "best burger in New Mexico", though I'd never even heard of it. Yesterday evening, we had no other plans, so we decided to make the drive out from Albuquerque to try their burgers. It's a tiny, hole-in-the-wall place, but I kind of like that about the atmosphere, and often times it's the little places where you can find some of the best food. You place your order at the counter, then take a seat. I should have gone with my gut instinct and ordered a chile burger, but I love a good mushroom Swiss burger, so I ordered that. My husband ordered a red chile burger with a side of green. There were no tables available, so we took a seat at the counter by the food prep area. The food took a lot longer to come out than I would have expected for this style of restaurant, but they were pretty busy, so I wanted to cut them some slack. When we got our food, I couldn't wait to dive in and taste the best burger in New Mexico. The good news, is that the meat tasted very fresh. We watched them press the patties by hand. They don't use any frozen meat here, which is great. Unfortunately, my burger was a little on the bland side. The meat wasn't seasoned much, so as fresh as it was, my burger failed to "wow" me, so I felt it didn't live up to the title of the best burger in the state. Also, they put refrigerator cold veggies on top of the meat which cooled it down too quickly. I tried a bite of my husband's red chile burger and it was so much better than mine. The red chile was very good and added the flavor that the burger needed. His side of green chile was also served refrigerator cold, though. The fries were excellent and the iced tea was fresh, too. Previous reviews have mentioned how friendly the staff was, but I think we must have visited on an off night. It's a family who runs the place, which is awesome, and I know sometimes things can get tense when working with family, but while we were watching them prep the food, there was a lot of bickering and arguing going on between the staff, and aside from when we placed our order and our food and drinks were delivered, they didn't really interact with us, though to be fair they were pretty slammed. When we left, I said "thank you" to the cashier, but no one responded or acknowledged us as we were leaving. I wouldn't mind going back and trying a chile burger for myself sometime, and hopefully we'll catch the staff on a better day. read more

Overall, food was good. I wouldn't mind going back if it were 5-10 minutes from home, but I see no reason to go out of my way. I like the owners, and thought they were very nice - the service was friendly and they have me free cookies after my meal, however the food could have been better. I had the combo plate, and wanted a relleno, but they were out of rellenos. Instead, I had a chicken taco, beef taco, and a cheese enchilada. The cheese enchilada was actually very good, but the taco shells were soggy on the bottom and stale on the top. The meat was cooked well and everything was seasoned well. I'm not sure why people seem to like Burger Boy. I suspect more because it's something of an institution than because it's good. With a name like Burger Boy you'd suspect that they'd make a good burger. They don't. It's not a bad burger. It's just not good. Their fries are from the freezer, their shakes are pretty meh. And the prices seem high for the quality. I've made several stops in to the place, each time hoping that the previous experiences were an exception. The first few times I came here were good (even though I think their "famous" green chili cheese burger is way overrated). The breakfast burrito was good and the enchiladas the first time were good. The second time I got the enchiladas they were cold to room temperature at best and the rice was hard. I'd recommend going when there isn't much of a crowd so they could concentrate more on the food because when it was busy it came out poorly. read more

Better Burgers Wanted a quick lunch since we had a long drive ahead of us. Lots of great welcomes from a cheerful and helpful staff. But they seemed to get a bit muddled and the order of who was next broke down, food was delivered to the wrong table, and the eventual correct order to longer than it should have. Fortunately, the food was very good. I had the green chili cheeseburger and it was one of the better I've had in New Mexico. The meat was juicy and tasty and the green chili was the right amount of zing. Another in our group had the corn dog. We asked if they made their own batter but were told it was one of the few things they don't make fresh, but they try very hard to find the best product. This one was very good. The third in our party just wanted some chocolate soft serve ice cream. After a while she was told that the chocolate dispenser wasn't working but the chocolate-vanilla swirl was (seems kind of odd). When she got it she said it was a bit icy but OK. So, a little better organization and training of staff would help. Otherwise, I got myself a mighty tasty last green chili cheeseburger before leaving New Mexico. read more

The best hidden gem of New Mexico, we love the burgers here, always so juicy and done just right. They have a nice outside area to eat and my puppy loves the burgers as well, she even gets her own puppy patty. The food is quick to be delivered and always cooked just right. This is one of the best places to get a green chili cheeseburger hands down. I have frequented this place many times as I live quite close however even if you don't I would recommend a drive out to Tijeras. They have one of the best green chili cheeseburgers I have ever had. And the service is wonderful. It is a family owned business and you can honestly tell that is exactly what it is. They always greet you warmly and kindly. Staff is extremely friendly and extremely helpful. My only recommendation is to call your food in ahead of time if you don't plan on eating in. They don't take long at all but it's nice when you can run in and just pick your food up especially when they are busy. Love this place highly recommended! read more

After hearing my hubby talk about Burger Boy for years, he surprised me with a drive here today for lunch. Tucked on the side of the road in Cedar Crest, this little lunch spot is a gem! A few tables in and outside, you order at the counter and are greeted and served by some very friendly folks. I ordered a single green chili cheeseburger and fries, my hubby had a double. There are other sides though--slaw, tots, sweet potato fries, as well as other entrees but my heart was set on a burger! Only a few minutes later, we were brought to my delight one of the best green chili cheeseburgers ever! Perfectly seasoned, flavorful but not hot, juicy not greasy, just the right toppings. Being from Indiana, one NEVER finds a breaded tenderloin sandwich out west! BUT HERE you DO!! Fresh breaded pork loin thick and juicy cooked to perfection! Nice crunchy breading not greasy. The owners are originally from Indiana, so they know how to cook em! They even serve CRUSHED ICE in the drinks! YUM! Great customer service and fast too! Glad we found them AND it's a 60 mile trip! Just came from there. My review: Meh. By the time you make a combo it becomes a little pricey ($13). The food is only average. However, the workers are very kind and friendly. (Only reason I gave it 3 stars.) The dining room is pretty small and all the tables are uneven. They do offer a buffalo burger which I might, (might) go back to try... In a year or two. If the only reason you're going to Cedar Crest is to eat here, don't. MUCH better burgers at Fuddruckers, Cheddars. read more

Excellent fried burgers! I had the green chili topping with cheese and my husband had a plain cheeseburger. You order at the counter, are given a number, and wait for your food. Our wait was about ten min. They were delivered with potato chips. The choc malt was good too and had a dark chocolate flavor that I enjoyed. This is a small old building in need of an update and good cleaning, so that took my rating down. The locals were coming and going so it is evidently popular - just off the interstate about a mile. I went in expecting one of the best burgers in NM. Not even close! My cheese burger was way over cooked and dried out. Bland was a good word for it. No seasoning at all. The veggies were crisp and decent and the bun was good. I thought they pressed their own meat here. It sure didn't taste like it. My wife's pork tenderloin sandwich had two big burn marks on it. And I've seen better fries at McD's. The place was very clean and the employees friendly. Would I come back? NO just not worth the trip. The best burger in NM is still at Buckhorn Tavern in San Antonio with Griff's in Albuquerque a close second. read more
