I came down here for lunch after picking up the car for repairs to the front from a driver who backed into my car a few months back. Burger Jim's is a longtime establishment on the corner of 4th and Gambell in a sketchier part of the downtown area on the east side. There would be no reason to dine in this part of town, but since the collision center was just around the corner, this was the most convenient option. Burger Jim's bring back a lot of memories from my high school years in the mid-90's when they still had a location at the Transit Center on 6th Ave and G St. Surprisingly, the dining area at this location still looks like it's in the 90's today with its wood booths and interior design. I was greeted by the manager who seemed to be the only person in the front for the lunch rush while everyone was working in the kitchen preparing orders. I decided to order a familiar favorite that was listed as Today's Special: the Burger Jim (ham, bacon, American cheese, grilled onions, mushrooms, and jalapeno peppers). The special includes fries and the drink for $9.99. I took a seat at one of the window booths next to where I parked my car. I only waited for a few minutes before my order arrived. The burger was good, but not as good as some of the other burger establishments I reviewed. The bacon, cheese, mushrooms, and onions were a great complement while the ham was an unnecessary addition with little to no flavor. Fries were thick-cut which is good when it's hot off the fryer, but loses its crispiness as it cools down leaving the thin strands as the only ones with a crispy texture. The Transit Center location used to be my favorite place for a burger after class, but with the location long gone and different owners today, there are better options elsewhere. read more

I like the kung pao chicken, it has more vegetables then chicken. The broccoli beef is ok, not bad but not something I'd order again. I watch two doordashers walk out on a Saturday evening around 6:30pm, I guess the tip wasn't enough for them to wait? I waited 15+ minutes from the time given to me, but that was ok. Went here for lunch on a whim one day when I was craving a good old cheese burger. Came and got the London burger special of the day for $10.95. It had so much cheese on it which I enjoy. Didn't care for the Canadian bacon but pickles and sauce was good. Made to order which I don't mind waiting for. Fries aren't too bad and they have Pepsi which is a plus for me. I was running around trying to find a place for lunch and stopped at Burger Jim's before the timer ran out. My cohort James LaD. got the Bacon Cheeseburger and Fries, I went with Schezwan Chicken. It was fast, the taste wasn't bad. It was OK. This is what I would call, "utility food". It's like the two wheel drive pick up truck of the culinary world. I've come here a few times a month for the last year and a half. The staff is always super friendly, and accommodating to my weird orders. The turnaround time is sometimes a bit slow, but they are *constantly* busy, so I always cut them a little slack on that. They have never got my order wrong, and my food is always hot when I arrive to pick it up. There have been a few times that it didn't taste right, but 90% of the time it's piping hot and tastes fresh. I have personally seen them get orders wrong, and the immediately jump to fix it or refund the customers money. They deal with all kinds of folks in there and really have a good handle on their customers and make sure that there aren't vagrants running around inside the building. read more

I have eaten here for years, but they just raised the price for the specials on burgers to $11.00. That is outrageous! Will not be going back. I will miss them. The other people in my office agree, not worth it even for a historically good burger. The burgers did seem to include less and less ingredients, however over time. The last one had very little lettuce and other items making that combo such as grilled onions and jalapeno. I requested extra jalapenos and was charged an extra $ .50. They had previously been added for free many times. The french fries need help also. I hope the quality returns for a decent price but will not hold my breath waiting. The service is just above satisfactory, so I cross out the tip line and hand the slip back face down. Simple, fresh food; clean, casual environment; reasonable prices. You order at the counter as you walk in, take a seat, then go pick up your order once it's ready. I had the patty melt and fries. The fries were larger "steak cut" style - hot and fresh. The patty melt was nicely cooked - two meet patties, not overdone, right amount of cheese and onions. The bread was lightly grilled and tasty. Burger Jims has an array of Burger choices with his famous "Daily Specials" which I think have not changed in 20 years....why rock a good thing huh?? Worst milkshake in the world. They use ICE. It was like an artificial chocolate-flavored slurpee. I don't think there was any actual milk in it. The fries and mushrooms were stale. The bathrooms were filthy, the tables were greasy and dirty. And they don't put ketchup at the tables. Every table had a mustard bottle but you had to go collect a ketchup bottle from the counter. Burger hums can be a real hit or miss, sometimes you are completely satisfied and actually impressed! But then again sometimes can be a total waste of time and money. I am sucker for their grilled tuna melt. They use the expensive Costco white albacore tuna (I saw the can) and mix it with mayo and onions and grill the tuna itself like a patty on the grill until it's browned and then melt the cheese on top and grill the thick, white bread with it all together. So fattening...so buttery...so good. The place is always filthy so I try to just look down at the sandwich and not at the walls, floors or table. Since going 'Gluten-Free' and doing the Atkin's diet, I eat other items on their menu. The burgers are always awesome and still consistent in quality, you can also double the burger (which is really steak) for a couple of dollars and make it a monster. They have the best 'Fried Rices' variety in town, and my favorite is the House Fried Rice, Spicy (has chicken, pork, beef and shrimp), they do not skimp on the meat and it's never soggy. Everything is freshly made. I adore their Jim Supreme salad, which is similar to a Cobb salad and can take home for later. They have an awesome New York-style Cheesecake thats creamy and delicious. They still deliver, have dine-in or take out....not many awesome places can manage that. My brother says their clam chowder is the best, and he is a head chef at a local artisan restaurant. For a fast food joint, the burgers here are pretty good. The Amero-Chinese grub is also pretty good using a food court metric. The fried chicken, on the other hand, is not. I'd give the dirty bird a pass if I were you. As this place is located in a bus station/transit center, it can attract some down and out folks and the environment is a bit grotty. read more
