Well, I wish this visit to Burke Street Pizza on Robinhood was better but they were really off their game tonight. Friday is a pretty common night for pizza and Burke street on Robinhood was definitely busy but the dining room was not too full and they had at least 12 people that I could count working so it looked like they were not short staffed. We ordered a few slices and an order of garlic knots. After about 20 min we got our slices but not the garlic knots. My husband reminded them we ordered garlic knots at the counter and they assured us they would be right up. If you don't know, they have a big container of plain garlic knots right behind the front counter they just add the garlic flavored butter/oil to when someone orders them. It's super quick and we usually get them within 5 min. We finished our sliced and still had not gotten our garlic knots. That was when my husband went back up and as soon as he did one of the workers remembered out them. By this time we had been there almost an hour. A couple min later they called us up to get the garlic knots but after eating my slice and waiting so long I didn't really want them. I took a bite of one and it was barely warm. They rushed it so much they didn't even give them time to warm up all the way. As someone who's been part of the restaurant industry for over 30 years, my husband and I could tell the kitchen was not communicating at all with each other. The silence in there was obvious. Communication is the most important part of a kitchen running well and when no one is talking to each other that is when it fails. We still love the pizza at Burke Street and the one on Robinhood is closer to home than the Burke Street location so that's the one we frequent. Hopefully the next time we go in, they will be better.

    Italian sandwich

Burke Street Pizza is a classic neighborhood pizza joint, nothing more and nothing less. The interior is dark and dated, which, while not terribly appealing, adds to its bona fides. In addition to pizza, the menu includes fried apps, wings, salads, and hot and cold sandwiches. The availability of grandma pies - a Long Island delicacy - was a pleasant surprise. I ordered an Italian sandwich and a veggie slice to go. Both were prepared quickly, and while I wouldn't call service here friendly, it is efficient. The food proved to be fairly satisfying albeit with room for improvement. The sandwich came stuffed with meats (Genoa salami/pepperoni/ham) and veggies though the oil and vinegar was barely discernible. The pizza slice was appreciably huge. Burke Street uses good-quality cheese and a nice sauce as well although the crust isn't as remarkable. As with other places, for specialty slices, they toss on toppings and re-heat, which means that said toppings don't get as cooked as long as they ideally should be. Presumably, a whole pie would offer a better texture. Ultimately, Burke Street pizza proved more serviceable than sensational. You could do a lot worse if a pizza craving hits, but don't expect to be blown away.

    Ultimate Vegetarian Pizza 16"

PIZZA REVIEW We ordered two 16" pizzas to go, a Pepperoni and the Ultimate Vegetarian, and they both were hot and hit the spot. The veggie was loaded so the "ultimate" box was checked. About four to five pieces of pepperoni were on each slice of the Pepperoni. The restaurant is located in the corner of the shopping center and not readily visible. Parking is not a problem. I was surprised by how dimly lit the place was upon entering. Although a few patrons sat at tables, most of the activity was take-out based. Other than the amount of veggies on the Ultimate, nothing stood out. Their dough is average, in my opinion, and neither the sauce nor the cheese supplied a pop of extra flavor. It's a solid pizza place, but I'd rather choose another pizzeria next time.

Following our summer vacation, it was time to pick our dog up from our in-laws. On our way, we decided to pick up pizzas, but sadly found that 2 of our favorite Winston spots and former Yelp events aren't open on Sundays. So had to find another spot, and were recommended Burke Street. We wish we'd checked the reviews before going through. We placed the order over the phone, with our first pizza option being rejected and told they don't make it at this location, despite it being on the menu for this location...so we quickly regrouped and placed our order with some other options. We got a large pepperoni pizza, a large bacon cheeseburger pizza and an order of garlic knots. And we were told it would be 15-20 minutes The order was ready by the time we arrived, looked, and smelled good, so we were definitely excited to give it a try. Unfortunately the looks were deceiving, and we found ourselves very disappointed by the quality. The pizza lacked any real flavor despite being incredibly greasy the garlic knots were especially disappointing having absolutely no garlic flavor and again or incredibly greasy. While just trying to tear one of the garlic knots in half I released an ungodly amount of oil on my plate unappetizing. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience, and I would not recommend this spot to anyone, I know I definitely won't be returning

Lunch special number two. One cheese and one pepperoni pizza, and a drink.

The best pizza I have had in Winston-Salem. Everyone there was friendly and nice and did not take long for my order to come up. I will definitely be going back for more.

Italian Sub, loaded with meat & cheese

You must be doing a lot correctly in a very competitive marketplace when you've been around as long as this restaurant has. The original opened in 2003, and this spot has been open for about 12 years. They offer NY style thin crust with the dough made in house daily and hand tossed before being rolled out! In the pizza area they offer a number of specialty pies, cheese, pepperoni, and specialty pizza of the day by the slice, hot and cold subs, some salad choices, and most of the usual appetizers - and they have daily lunch specials! In this visit, my first, I ordered the #3 Lunch Special - 2 slices of Pepperoni pizza with a large soda for $9.25 - and an 8" Italian Sub for $10.30. The order was up in no more than 10 minutes, and I headed for some near by outside seating with umbrellas to protect from the sun - very pleasant on this sunny day! The pizza slices were huge, the biggest I've seen in the entire Triad! The taste was great, with the pepperoni delivering a real kick. The sub was outstanding - loaded with salami, pepperoni, ham & provolone and well topped with lettuce, tomato & banana peppers, with mayo - no red onion or oil & vinegar (with take out the sub usually gets soggy)! Ambiance - 3 Food - 4.5 Service - 4 Value 4.5

We ordered pizza from here and I did not feel like pizza. I got a Cheeseburger hero thinking it would be a burger patty but it was ground beef that was really salty and not very good. Ended up throwing it out. Waste of money!

It's not the best pizza in town, in my opinion, but it can be tasty. It's the type of pizza that's kind of sloppy and doesn't hold itself up. That's a personal taste thing. If you happen to be around T.J. Maxx or Lowes Foods, it's convenient and tasty enough for a great lunch. Oh, and they sell pizza by the slice, which are huge!

If you like TONS of toppings, eat here!!! And, they let you do a 1/2 & 1/2 pizza! That is all I have to say... :-)

Burke St pizza is SO underrated. I must say-it is traditionally a late night stop, but is just one of the BEST options in town for NY style pizza. We stopped in for lunch today. The hubby got pepperoni pizza but I had to be a bit difficult, and they were SUPER accommodating. I ordered 2 slices of the lasagna pizza (if you haven't tried it-you're missing out) and added mushrooms and onions. Also-I needed a side salad with ranch. Their ranch is so yummy. I honestly had forgotten how huuuuuge the slices are, so I got to take one home for later. We ordered at the counter, and it was done pretty quickly. Minus one star for the restroom situation-they could use some TLC.

Housed in a former Coca-Cola bottling plant, Grandpa Joe's pays homage to the site's history through its red and black décor. The menu offers salads, floats, and soft serve though pizza is the star attraction. It is served by the rectangular slab (about $8 per). Order at the counter, grab a number for your table, and wait for the oven to work its magic. For our first visit, my wife and I split a trio of slabs -- an Italian sausage, a mushroom, and a tomato and burrata -- with a side of marinara. All three were excellent. The focaccia crusts were crispy while still retaining airiness. From melty mozzarella to savory, fennel-forward sausage, Grandpa Joe's uses high-quality ingredients. The marinara was good: bright, fresh, and just a bit sweet. The mushroom slab came topped with arugula and shaved parmesan. Despite seeming like a gimmick (pizza? Salad? Why not both?), it proved an effective combination: the arugula's bitterness played well with the mushrooms' earthy flavors. There will be a certain type of pizza connoisseur for whom anything that isn't New York style is, by definition, fraudulent. For those with horizons broad enough to enjoy a thicker crust, Grandpa Joe's is the best of that kind that I've found in the Triad.

This does mean that there is a large outdoor courtyard where you can eat a pizza which is shared with other local businesses. It was busy, and I was concerned that I had erred by not ordering in advance, but my pizza was ready quickly. Like, remarkably quickly; I just ordered, hopped over to the bathroom, and it was done within a couple of minutes of being back. And when it's done properly, a Neapolitan pizza does not take very long to cook, so clearly the operation leading up to that point is efficient. Substantively, the menu has pizzas, a couple of salads, and some dessert options. I indulge in all of the above. The salad I got is quite impressive and is too much for one person at one time. It is an interesting mix of ingredients with nuts, blueberries, and apricot dressing. I am always a tad reluctant to order a white pizza because I like the tomato sauce so much, but the onions and mushrooms on the one I got were suitably mouthwatering. There was a bit of char on this pizza although I could have used more being the char fan that I am. Their version of tiramisu is a cake slice which is quite heavy on the sweet cheese. The vegan options are basically limited to getting a pizza without cheese, which I'm sure is some good bread and tomato sauce but not much of a meal; typical of most Italian places.
