8 years ago when I used Burkhardt Movers, I had the most positive moving experience possible. Fast forward to 2023, and I wondered if they maintained their excellence. The bottom line is that you shouldn't waste time looking around, just use Burkhardt. One of the owners David came a week before the move, gave me a reasonable estimate and was incredibly personable. Then yesterday they sent two guys (Morgan and Kyle) who were absolutely tremendous. Sometimes you never know what you're getting with movers, but these two guys were courteous, listened to make sure that things were done the way I wanted, and they let me know on multiple occasions that they were dedicated to making sure that the job was done the way I wanted. And to make it even better, they were also focused on being efficient which meant that the move went smoothly and quickly without any feeling that they were cutting corners. It wasn't until later that I found out that Morgan is also a Burkhardt, and it gives me confidence that this company is going to be around for a long time. Moving is usually an emotional affair, but Burkhardt Movers were so fantastic that the sadness of the move was quickly replaced by gratitude for how pain-free they made the move. My friend about was looking for mover recommendations when I told her about my horrible experience with this company, She said I should warn others, so here I am. I had used this company years ago in the early 2000's and had a good experience. However, the time I used them again a few years ago was a nightmare, One of the owners came to my apartment to give me an estimate. I was getting rid of most of my furniture because it was old and/or broken. So basically all I had to move was a bedroom set, a couch, and some boxes. He quoted me two people because I did not have a lot to move. In fact, when I used them before I only had two people because I did not have a ton of furniture but much more than I had this time. Anyway, imagine my surprise when on moving day THREE people showed up. One of them said to me that they didn't have much work that day. Oh so I am supposed to pay for that? They know they have you though because moving is stressful enough without an argument. Plus, I stupidly thought it would go faster. WRONG! They were so slow that even with three of them there would be long gaps between getting furniture. I went outside at one point and saw the three of them just hanging out on the truck. So finally when everything was done I said ok I will meet you at the new place. One of them said, we have to stop at the office real quick. I get to my new place, and it took them over an hour and a half to arrive. I called their cell phone at one point because they had given me the number, but of course they did not answer. So when they finally showed up and moved me in, they way overcharged me. At least a third more than what I was quoted. I was so tired and worn out that I just paid it. I had to return to work the next day so it took me a while to unpack. That's when I started to notice that I was missing things, jewelry, handbags, designer sunglasses, china from my Grandmother, a huge jar full of change, clothes etc. The problem was i could not prove any of it. I also stupidly used bankers boxes so I did not seal them because I have never had a mover steal from me. One of the movers even said to me that I should not have used them! I was too stupid to realize that the reason they took so long to get to my new place was because they were going through my stuff to see what valuables they could take. I am still heartbroken because some of the things they took were family heirlooms which really only had sentimental value. Please do not hire these people at any price! I wish I had brought them to court, and I still might. Anyway, I am hoping I can spare someone else from their thievery. read more

So many 4 and 5 star reviews- what could possibly go wrong? Nothing that couldn't have been completely avoided. Maybe my little apartment move wasn't enough for them, so they had to make it more worthwhile to them? I just don't know. It started out with a good estimate. Not the highest one, not the lowest one, just right in the sweet spot. The estimator was friendly, professional and explained everything. So a few days later, after making my comparisons, I called and booked a day of packing and moving the next day after that. Normally I would pack up myself but trying to get it together between medical issues was daunting, so I bit the bullet and had them do it. It was my lifetime move #33 so not having to pack up was admittedly going to be an improvement on my usual stress-fests! The two packers were friendly, seemed professional and were super speedy-they arrived at 9am as planned. Basically they reassured me I could get out of the way while they worked. Off I went to a medical appointment. They were gone by 2pm with only a few items left for the next day. Tips were handed out and everyone was happy. Next day four movers arrived at 9am and started right in. I was expecting two movers but as it turned out they were killing time while waiting for another job to start so I was unexpectedly paying for their waiting time. Not a huge deal since it meant they'd be done twice as fast. All in all, there were very few glitches and the move was done by early afternoon. Surprise #1: the final bill was 20% higher than the estimate. I expected 10% but 20%? Yikes. I'd have gone with a mover who's moved me before (who always breaks something) based on the estimate. Not so much I can do at that point, so . . .again, tips were disbursed, they left happy with the leftover breakfast donuts. Then I started unpacking. Surprise #2: a few hours in to unpacking and I opened one of the bigger boxes, a china box. Usually packed with dishes & kitchen stuff, this one had even more paper than the previous ones, which were chock-full of packing paper. And more paper, and more paper and . . . yes, more paper all the way to the bottom of the box. Nothing but lots of paper wadded and screwed up in bunches to fill the boxes. Unpacking one empty box after another was a punch. All total, five large boxes with nothing but paper. Why?? Surprise #3: once I finally got everything unpacked I realized: I was missing two walking canes, one about 45 years old brought back from Barbados, with a carved fish head on top and one Amazon Choice with purple flowers for the last knee surgery. I called Burkhardt Brothers to inquire (1) if they had my walking sticks, (2) why the final total cost went 20% over, and (3) why bother stuffing boxes with paper if they were going to overcharge me anyway?? Their phone rep is always very pleasant and she reassured me she understood my concerns, she'd have the move teams check for my canes and I asked that she relay my overcharge and empty box concerns to the owners. She assured me I'd hear from her by the following Monday. Needless to say, over two weeks later we still have radio silence! So- as always, caveat emptor and be FAR more watchful than I was if Burkhardt Bros pack you up because being charged for the empty boxes and a ton of packing paper is adding insult to injury on the hefty cost of a very stressful day. p.s BTW, be sure to check the bottom of your wardrobe boxes because, Surprise #4: whatever they throw in the boxes that isn't hanging on the bar will be gone with the wind, as Burkhardt movers don't check the bottom of the wardrobes before unexpectedly taking them away, so . . . read more

While I was not the one moving I witnessed the disaster of a move for one of my clients. I was and still remain in disbelief over how she was treated and the amount of mistakes made with this very short move. Come to find out two of the crew were not really part of the moving team but recruited as the regular team were focused on a bigger move in the area. Just be careful what you are sold and agree to. Stay close to ensure they adhere to that agreement. read more

Called first thing Monday morning June 21,2021for local estimate move. Was told by Daniel he would come Wednesday 5pm. I called him ten minutes before 5pm on Wednesday to see if he was on his way as I am waiting on him and have to leave at 5:30 pm for appointment. Left message with office who contacted him. I get a call at 5:10 pm from Dan saying he got hung up in Duxbury and would call me at 8am next morning to reschedule estimate. I thought he would swing by for minute before he got to the office, but no. Mind you no apology for holding me up as if people have to hang around waiting on his phone calls. Thursday morning I call his number and leave voicemail as I have been waiting an hour and fifteen minutes 9:15am at home when I had more important things to do. Asking what's going on you said you'd call and maybe come by first thing in morning. Ten minutes later I get call from Kim in office saying nothing available for the month of July and when I said why didn't Dan tell me that 4 days ago, she didn't know. I've worked with Burkhardt over the last 7 months on 8 houses move ins/move outs on all. The crew has always been prompt, professional and a pleasure to work with - which is why they had earned our repeat business. Then came this last move. The movers arrived just shy of their start time with no initial red flags. We had multiple pick up points and I had noticed they weren't shrink wrapping any of the furniture which they normally do in addition to using moving blankets and tape to ensure everything was protected. They loaded a large, antique mirror on the truck and just leaned it up against the sides without any protection. I didn't address it as I trusted they knew what they were doing. It wasn't until our second stop when one of the movers was using questionable tactics to try to move a table that wasn't fitting easily. He failed to no avail, hitting the lights in the room multiple times and even had the other mover scaling the beams and his words "I'm hanging on by a thread". I finally step in and voiced my concern and asked if we could just try it another way as the table is very old and I was worried about damage to the lights - not to mention the other worker potentially getting hurt. He was not confident but said with attitude "I'll bet you five bucks it won't fit". The frustrating experience continued as pieces that weren't wrapped were showing signs of scratches. My manager arrived and addressed the concerns where she was met with more attitude and being told "I'm a Burkhardt..." followed by remarks that he is more experienced in antique furniture than she is. At this point, we contacted the office as this was extremely unusual behavior that we had never experienced before. We find out he is one of the OWNERS. The move continued and he was pleasant enough and started draping moving blankets over items and we had no further issues. Until after they left we noticed that a bed they did not wrap had a piece broken off of it and it was left sitting to the side. No word was mentioned about this at the time of the move. I contacted Burkhardt's office and spoke to one of their lovely ladies in the office and explained the situation. I sent pictures of the bed fully intact and then the missing piece. I get a call back from Dan Burkhardt, the man that was responsible for our move and he left an incredibly unprofessional and defensive voicemail stating the bed was already broken and that my picture shows glue from the 1940s on it. We returned his call to him continuing to attack us stating he found the bed that way and that we're trying to get out of paying the bill after we've paid all prior jobs with not a question prior to this. Regardless of if the piece was previously broken or glued, had they pointed that out when they discovered it or even carefully wrapped all of the items, we would not have any issues at all. The entire experience from start to finish was unprofessional and the owner of Burkhardt clearly does not hold himself to the same standard as his employees. read more

We have used burkhardt many times for moving. I loved their service until the owner - Dan decided to work a shift. He started off with refusing to wrap up furniture which they always did prior. I addressed the first scratched item and his answers was he it most experienced with antiques and air must have scratched it. He was rude to my staff and me. At the end of an exhausting day with him and only one hard working staff member (he was doing all the work) moving furniture there were multiple items items scratched and a bed post was broken. He accused us of trying to get out of paying for the move and was extremely rude. Beware you never know which mover you will get. He will not address broken items and is very defensive. I would have been a busy customer with 30 plus more whole house moves. I will never work with him again. The other owner however is professional and great. I never had an issue up until this move and unfortunately would never work with them or recommend them again. read more

Time after time I have been greeted promptly day of by their knowledgeable and respectful employees. The two young men who moved me from one storage unit plus one house into one apartment were strong, polite, pleasant, and quick. I had goods that needed to be delivered into the home in Woodstock... some goods to be delivered into the barn and a few big pieces to be delivered to an address in Scituate, ma. Burkhardt did everything to perfection. No problem... You only need to say it once. Everything was packed .. wrapped and delivered ..like it was museum quality goods. Dan Burkhardt and crew are the best movers I have ever hired..( I am experienced..moved 16 times ..long distances). Burkhardt Bro. movers ... everyone of them.. from Don who came out to give me an estimate to Carole in the office, Kevin,Alex, and Dan... everyone was such a pleasure to work with. Dan never forgets anything.. if you mention it he remembers... you do not want it packed.. got it... want it on second floor.. got it...packed last... got it... They've always been on-time, within estimate (always reasonable) and exceptionally careful with our "prized possesions." They are very easy to deal with. I used Burkhardt to move from downtown Boston to Cohasset. This was 2 days after "The Blizzard of 2013" and there was a 9 foot snow pile in front of my house. I got a call from Burkhardt a day before to plan the most efficient way to work around the snow and make my move successful. They even had a backup plan and brought a second truck (at no charge) that they could have used to circle the block if they couldn't pull over. We were able to find a spot out front, and didn't have to use any emergency plans, but the dedication to my move was notable. They brought two extra guys for the first half of the move, to make filling the truck as fast as possible due to the snow/parking situation. Those extra guys (cleared with me ahead of time) made the final amount a little more than my two other quotes, but it was worth it to have an entire house packed in just over 2 hours. All the workers were nice, friendly guys, and were very careful with all my (family of 3's) furniture and belongings. Everything arrived safely. My only complaint would be that I wish they had accepted credit cards, even if there was a small fee added - I was selling my condo, and didn't have my money from the sale yet, but still had to write a check for Burkhardt. read more

I will soon have my last interaction with these guys (presumably) until I move to a rest home. Now that my beloved piano is moving on from their storage facility to a space that can accommodate it, I will be ending my 12 year (4 moves) on-and-off relationship with these guys. Why am I actually feeling a bit unsettled about this? Because we've developed a kind of closeness that only comes from all our work together under some of the worst personal circumstances, and I totally trust them because they are... *Detail-oriented (owner Dan remembered how I wanted furniture placed even when I couldn't) *Reliable (on time, within/under budget, do what they say they'll do) *Careful (with your belongings and interiors) *Thorough (nothing left behind and the right items went to the right places in a multi-drop move) *Thoughtful (provided ideas ahead of time about how to save money on the move) *Reasonably priced (not the cheapest and that's really ok with me!) *Considerate (didn't nickel and dime the small stuff, went above and beyond regularly) *Professional (respectful, careful with our stuff, appropriate language at all times, good with kids) *Organized (the left hand knew what the right was doing) etc. etc. The most important part for me was how sensitive, compassionate and appropriately humorous they were. Moving stinks - it's stressful, hard work, and often the result of sad circumstances. Even under the best of circumstances, no one wants to do this, but they manage to make people feel better about moving. What movers have the emotional intelligence and kindness to help you withstand overwhelming grief? For one incredibly stressful and sad move I had, we finished at night and I climbed up to my bedroom feeling physically and emotionally ill. I couldn't believe that Dan and his guys had fully set up my bed, ready for me to sleep. I still tear up, remembering how they cared for me, knowing that I felt more fragile than all of my glasses they had just wrapped and moved. Worth every penny and more. I hired Burkhardt Brothers to move me from Weymouth to Quincy in March and they did a fantastic job. Their quote was exactly what I owed when the job was finished and was very reasonably priced compared to other quotes I received. The only thing I wanted out of a mover was to be as painless and hassle free as possible and they came through 110%. They were prompt, courteous, helpful, and got the job done quickly and efficiently. I would definitely recommend them to anyone that is looking for a hassle free and reasonably priced moving experience. We cannot say enough about this company! They made our move out of Boston easy and seamless taking things to one location, and most of our furniture to their storage facility. When we were ready to move into our new home, booking a date with the office was easy and pleasant. The guys arrived right on time, were incredibly professional, friendly and easy to work with. When a minor hiccup arose of a couch being a tight fit into the house, they quickly found a solution and got everything where it needed to be. Burkhardt recently moved me between apartments in Boston. They did an excellent job. They used a small truck and 2 movers. The movers were very friendly and efficient and the move only took about 2 hours total. They made sure to ask which items I wanted moved (I had roomate's belongings mixed in with mine), and where to put the larger pieces (mattress, desk, dresser, etc.). Everything was treated with care and I was never worried about items breaking or being mishandled. They made a process most people dread as enjoyable and easy as possible. I've moved 9 times in 4 years, so consider myself an expert. I have some pieces of furniture that are not straightforward and A fair amount of packing required. I've used Burkhardt three times: twice to move my small business (three employees, conference room, etc.) and once to move my family. All moves were local: Hingham to Hingham, Hingham to Norwell. The quotes were competitive and the service outstanding. I have paid less for moves in the past and had problems with these other movers such as not showing up, damaging furniture, you name it. In moving, as in life, you get what you pay for. We are moving from one house in Norwell to another and I wouldn't consider using anyone else. Not having called them in seven years (last office move), I had to google their name to get the phone number and saw a link to this site. I saw the posts by Tara F. and Peter S. and they get it. Burhardt Bros. Movers was awesome! After moving to NE from TX, I quickly learned that TX sized furniture is a challenge when accommodating old NE home hallways/stairs and ceilings. Our relocation company was not able to get our king sized bed up to our room. Disheartened because it was BRAND new, they left it in the garage for me to hopefully sell. A friend suggestioned Burkhardt Movers... they came within the week, studied our house with all its angles and BAM!, they were able to get my bed up the stairs into the room that same day! WORST moving company ever! I requested a specific crew, NOPE did not get them. I moved ALL of my own boxes, they were just to move the furniture. They damaged a $4000 mattress and almost every piece of furniture has been damaged! They do not know how to move high end mattresses! They refused to replace the mattress stating we opted for damages to be compensated at 60cents per pound which is no where near the cost to replace it! They wanted to compensate for damage to the mattress but 'fix' everything else. Really? I have to buy a new mattress for over $4000 and you get to give 60cents a pound for the mattress only and can 'fix' everything else? Well, after seeing how they moved everything I would hate to see how they 'fix' anything. They damaged over 3,450 POUNDS of furniture! Watch out with this company - they do not know how to move furniture and in the long run it cost us more money to buy a new mattress and have the other furniture they delivered repaired. They are not someone I would ever do business with again. Keep this in mind, we were NOT the first person to have them damage an expensive mattress that had to file a claim with the Attorney General against them! read more

Not only did he give me an estimate but also gave me some tips on how to save money with the move and getting organized for the move. Day of the move, three movers arrived on time and ready to work. I used Burkhardt recently to move my office. They were fantastic! The 3 young men showed up right on time (actually, a little early) and got right to work after we reviewed what was moving (only some off the office was moving.) They were so careful with all of my things and were able to maneuver desks and work spaces into the tiny elevator. When they moved me into my new, freshly painted office they did not leave one ding or mark on the walls. Even the doorway remained pristine. They reassembled whatever had to be disassembled to move, and made sure everything was where I wanted it. They were finished in no time and the move came in under budget. They were very professional and I felt like my items were in very good hands. I have used Gentle Giant in the past, but since I'm in the suburbs I always had to pay for them to sit in Boston traffic to get to me. No more. We were moving from about 5500 square feet in Hingham to an apartment in Boston, requiring the household to be moved to three different locations; Nantucket, storage in Weymouth, and the apartment itself. Burkhardt packed, moved, unpacked when requested, and always acted in a professional manner. Moving a 2000 pound safe down a bulkhead to a Nantucket basement was no problem for them. Packing Lladro porcelain figurines with flower petals so thin you can see through them was perfect, as were the figurines when they were unpacked. These people know what they're doing. The actual bill was slightly less than the estimate. I recommend them without reservation. read more

An all around wonderful experience.. I hired 3 men to move a piano from the basement up 3 flights of stairs. They were very careful in wrapping the piano, and moving anything in their way.
