A long overdue update. Quality/Quantity - Today we got the following: Tea Leaf Salad - My wife's favorite, and she wanted to introduce this to our guest. Coconut Chicken Noodle Soup - Generous portions, more than enough for the 5 of us. I actually wanted to take the leftover broth home to put it on my rice or noodles. But my wife had them take it away early to make room for all the other dishes. The generous portions of chicken were also so tender. Pumpkin Pork Stew - Our favorite in the past, still good and consistent. Wok-Tossed Chili - Lamb, so tender. This was actually my favorite dish today. The lamb was cooked perfectly, so tender. The soup was my second favorite. Chicken Kebat - Good. And two bowls of coconut rice. The 5 of us only ate one bowl, I guess none of us were rice eaters... Plenty of leftovers for an entire meal for our guests who took all the leftovers home. Atmosphere - Very small location. This explains the previous hour-long waits. Indoor and outdoor heating seating. Amazingly, one family sat outside on this cold, windy, and raining day! Metered street parking; I parked 2 blocks away for free residential parking. Open 7 days a week from 11:30am to 9pm. Service - 5 stars. They normally do not seat you unless your entire party is here. We drove 3 cars and my wife got here first. She was the very first customer. They decided to let her have her table. As my wife had spa/beauty appointments after lunch, she ordered (family style) for everyone early while the rest of us looked for parking. Price - $137 + tip; reasonably priced for the quality of food we got. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 1992 with your 8 locations and growing. We have been a customer of your SF (first?) location for a very long time. Congrats not only on your restaurants, but also your cookbook, workshops, community investments, and consumer food products. Burma Superstar is one of Alameda's best restaurants. It's small on the inside but they have seats outside as well. I came here for dinner with my friends and loved everything. The waiter recommended us great dishes . We ordered the Nan Gyi Dok & Wok Style Chili Beef and a side of coconut rice. The Nan Gyi Dok is noodles with curry chicken. I was in between getting curry and noodles this was the perfect compromise with both my cravings. The noodles were cooked perfectly and delicious with the chicken. I don't know why everyone recommended the tea leaf salad- it has absolutely no flavor whatsoever. If you took a bag of iceberg lettuce, a shit ton of avocado oil and sunflower seeds- you'd get the same experience as the tea leaf salad. The mango chicken with the coconut rice was okay - not worth $30 in my opinion but I'll eat the leftovers. I feel bad for the 16 year old waitress- I asked for drink recommendations- and she said the lemon drop without ginger. I don't know what else I should have expected. Overall I'm not sure it's worth a repeat visit given there was also a 25 minute wait for an outside table. If you do go- make sure it's before 6pm on a weekday for half off drinks. read more

The Rainbow salad is my favorite item on the menu. Make sure to order it traditional style for more umami flavor. Honestly, I order one for myself and we get another one for the table to split. It's gluten free and they have other items on the menu that are GF, non dairy, vegetarian, etc which is nice. Their soups are hearty and delicious. The mango shrimp/chicken is another table fave. Honestly, we've liked everything we've tried on the menu. The service is quick- it's very bustling inside. The tight corridor to the back of the restaurant where the bathrooms are means doing an awkward side shuffle dance with servers and cooks. It makes me feel a little anxious. They are so popular (which is a good problem to have!) but wish they could expand their footprint for better customer comfort. The inside of the restaurant is very cramped, so the outside parklet is preferred for me. There's a weekday happy hour where drinks are 50% off which makes splurging on alcohol much more reasonable. It's a Bay Area institution worth checking out. A great date night or take out of towners. read more

The OG of Burmese restaurants - eating at one of their three Bay Area locations is a treat. I met a former colleague here for lunch today, and we sat outdoors as there was no space indoors. There was noisy construction on Park Street but we managed to converse without yelling. I ordered a Burmese milk tea and the pork curry lunch special, he got the mango chicken with garlic noodles. The food arrived in about 15 minutes - the salad served with my curry was delightfully crunchy, and the coconut rice was perfectly cooked. The curry was flavorful without being overpowering, and had a couple of pieces of potato in addition to the pork, which were a pleasant surprise. My colleague enjoyed his food as well, polishing it off well before I did. Service was friendly and attentive. There was only one unisex bathroom but it was clean. Parking was a challenge - but I managed to find a spot on the street a couple of blocks away. Will be back en famille! read more

Excellent food! Great atmosphere and service! Landed at Oakland airport after a 5+hrs flight with no actual meal served left us a big hangry, so a delicious meal was my priority after landed. Looking at all the pictures from here prior to landing, I knew we just have to give them a visit. We arrived at dinner and the restaurant looked pretty busy both indoor and on the patio, but to our surprised, we were quickly seated. Our server was very friendly and attentive. We started off with the Tea Leaf Salad (of course lol), Platha & Dip, and Samosas. The Tea Leaf Salad was the best one we have had! It's a texture and flavor party in your mouth. Packed with so much of everything, but not overwhelming. We all loved the Platha& Dip, including our toddler. It was so good that we ordered a 2nd. The Samosas was good, but nothing special. For entrees, we went with the Ginger Chili Pork, Garlic Noodle with Chicken, and a side of Coconut Rice. Good thing we pretty stuffed ourselves with the appetizers, cuz the entrees were a bit let down. The only dish we really liked was the Ginger Chili Pork. Both the Garlic Noodle and Coconut Rice were weirdly sweet. Luckily, their entree portion was big enough that we had a tons of left over for the next day from just the Ginger Chili Pork alone. The rest we didn't care for much. Overall, we would come back here again if we are in the area. Came here with my family and had such a great experience. The staff were friendly and very attentive from start to finish. Seating can be a little challenging since it gets busy, but they're super accommodating and really try their best. They also have outdoor seating with heaters, which was a plus. When not super hungry, my go-to is the platha with coconut chicken curry appetizer with a side of coconut rice. It's a filling and flavorful meal. The platha (think roti) is crispy and flaky and chewy. Instead of dipping it in the coconut curry, I eat that separately and eat the coconut chicken curry over the coconut rice for a perfect meal. My spouse is big on the chili pork belly. We've tried the rainbow salad, the spicy chicken, and several other dishes and they're all equally good. Hands-down, never, ever skip the coconut rice. Although this store may be my first time having Burmese cuisine, this restaurant's reviews definitely makes it overhyped. Parking is plentiful in the garage within the block of Alameda theater. I ordered a Burmese style beef (curry) and a Mohinga. The beef curry was decent at best, but I was surprised there weren't any vegetables, or anything, other than meat! Although it's advertised as "burmese" curry, it tastes similar to the curry I make at home, and the ones at Japanese restaurants. At $25, this dish really felt overpriced for essentially a beef and rice combo. The Mohinga was also pretty average. It had a singular piece of catfish in the soup, and was mostly comprised of noodles. Like many other reviewers said, the broth was oily and is decent at best. I wouldn't recommend this dish and rather stick with something safer, especially if you're not familiar with it. The mae sae iced tea sounds very "exotic" if you will, but it's just thai tea mixed with some alcohol. I would not recommend ordering this as the flavor feels easy to replicate at home. Service was okay, but we definitely felt a little rushed given we came on a weekend night. read more

Came to this cute spot in Alameda before I took off for a flight back home and this place was perfect! They had just opened so it was a no wait but it seemed packed by the time i left. Folks who worked there were super nice and helpful with choosing which menu item I would be able to travel best with. I got the Burmese Milk Tea, a new flavor of milk tea that I am so happy to say was amazing! It paired really well with the Garlic Noodles I got, super flavorful and packed with vegetables, peanuts, warm noodles, all the good stuff. It was my first time trying Burmese food, and I loved it! The pork curry is phenomenal. The salad is refreshing and so flavorful. Even the rice by itself has a delicious sweet coconut flavor. They have great lunch specials so you can try several different dishes. This is a must try! Service was exceptional as well. However, be careful if you want to wear heels when dining here. When I went to the bathroom I slipped and fell on the ground because their floor is super slippery and slick. I have no idea what they put on it and I let the staff know. They were very sweet and so was the couple that fell in front of that helped me up. They have lots of outdoor dining and there is usually a small wait to get a table but well worth the wait. Amazing food and friendly staff! I was in town for work and swung by off a friend's recommendation. Since it was my first time here I asked the staff if they had any recommendations. They were very helpful and walked me thru their menu and highlighted a handful of dishes. There were so many dishes I wanted to try, but since I was a solo diner I could only pick one item. I ordered the lamb kebat which was very tasty. The server said kebat dishes are one of the most Burmese dishes you can order on the menu so I had to try it. Some of the other dishes I was eyeing were their spicy noodles, eggplant curry, laphet thoke, and nan gyi dok. The restaurant also and a cocktail menu that looked really good. The interior is clean and the noise level wasn't too loud so this would be a great spot to enjoy good food with good conversations. The next time I'm up in the Bay Area I'll definitely be swinging by Burma Superstar to try more of their menu. read more

Promptly seated, ordered and I guess we came at a time when they were changing servers - mid afternoon. No notice that the original server was taking off, so the energetic first person was replaced with a person who barely communicated with us. Only three occupied tables inside when we went, thus they weren't slammed with a full house. Had to wave down servers for plates after a drippy salad. Ordered a very saucy salad, a noodle dish with chicken, and eggplant with tofu. The sauces on the hot items were overly salty and thick. We took most of it home and doctored it up. Restaurant is big but there is only one bathroom. Be prepared for long lines. Food was great tho. And I found out that they have lamb! It was nice and tender and not tough or dry. My fellow diners also commented on the tenderness of the lamb. The garlic sauce eggplant is cooked canto style so I'm totally digging it. Not sure why the garlic noodles are called that but it was still very delicious. They have that naan/roti with chicken dip so it's good for kids. And the tea leaf salad was good. I think the catfish curry is the best tho. Nice combo of fried catfish with thick curry! Very nice taste and textures because there were also white (rice?) noodles and crunchy corn fritters inside the curry. Only thing interesting was that the mango lassi had a fair amount of yogurt in it so it was slightly sour. But it still tasted good all the same. Maybe healthier? I love this place. It never disappoints and when we are in the Bay Area, Burmese food is always on our radar because it is so good here. The tea leaf salad is always a star as is the coconut rice. I've been here a couple times when meeting a friend in Alameda. It's a unique spot with a creative menu. I've tried the pumpkin chicken stew and most recently the Burmese chicken salad. Both were flavorful and were a decent size. We got the hot tea the last time and it was very good. It had a great flavor that needed no honey (none was offered either). The prices are a bit high but it's expected for downtown Alameda. Parking can be difficult but there are a couple close public lots. The interior is cute inside and isn't very big so when it gets busy, they fill up quick. Overall, it's a fun location to come to and experience different food options. read more

Parking was a struggle, as usual in alameda. After a few loops around the block, then we eventually found a meter parking spot a few blocks away. We had to put our name in the waitlist to be seated inside the restaurant, but we decided to sit outside with no wait time. There were no issue, because there was a heating lamp. We were seated with excellent quick service, and a plastic water cup for our little one. We definitely over order just for the 2 of us, but everything was so good. The tea leaves salad was new and interesting. I'm glad I tried it once, and probably will not order it again. But it's my friend's favorite. Moseying along Alameda's commercial district, we stopped into Burma Superstar for a quick bite. And what a treat - we started with the tea leaf salad and it came out in little piles of ingredients before the server mixed it all together at the table. The best way to describe it would be to think of every variation of crunch and you'll get it in every bite. From the hard crisp of the lettuce to the softer crunch of pants and roasted garlic to the soft chew of sesame seeds, it's a mix of textures in every bite.
