Overall: 3/5 This spot delivers solid burgers and chicken sandwiches, but in a Twin Cities food scene packed with strong contenders, it doesn't quite rise above the crowd. Food [1.5/3] The food was good, just not distinctive enough to stand out among the plethora of burger and chicken sandwich options around the Twin Cities. The portions are definitely hearty, which helps make the meal feel satisfying, but several dishes could benefit from bolder seasoning and better balance. A little more acidity, sauce, or brightness would go a long way in cutting through the richness and giving each bite more personality. Bourbon Chicken Sandwich had a tasty glaze with a pronounced bourbon flavor and paired nicely with the pineapple slaw, which added a welcome hit of acidity and fruitiness against the heavier fried chicken. The bun was soft and lightly toasted, and the chicken portion was massive. That said, the chicken itself was under seasoned, leaving the unglazed bites fairly bland. The pineapple slaw was a great idea, but it was used so sparingly that its flavor only came through occasionally. The come back sauce was overlooked by the glaze. Burnt Chicken Sandwich followed a similar pattern: a very large piece of chicken, but not enough seasoning in the breading to carry the sandwich on its own. The herb mayo added some needed depth and helped elevate the flavor, but the layer was so thin that it got lost in larger bites. With a heavier hand on the sauce and seasoning, this could be much more compelling. When dipped into the side of aioli (cost extra), the flavor profiles were much better. Voodoo Smash Burger was overall underwhelming. The voodoo pepper sauce was easily the highlight and gave the burger a strong focal point, but the sautéed onions and comeback sauce were muted, and the smashed patty itself wasn't especially memorable. The first bite was decent, but the flavor didn't build or evolve, making the rest of the burger feel a bit flat. Service [0.5/1] The service was friendly, however, they were doing what seemed to be a midday clean and prep, which made the visit feel less polished. I also ordered a side of aioli for the fries and wasn't told there would be an additional charge. The cost itself wasn't a concern, but if a condiment carries an upcharge-especially one not listed on the menu-it should be mentioned before it shows up on the bill. Atmosphere/Ambiance [1/1] The space itself has a lot going for it. If you stop in for lunch on a Tuesday, you may catch some cleaning and prep activity, but setting that aside, the decor and ambiance are genuinely pleasant. It's cozy, well lit, and has a nicer feel than you might expect, especially for this part of the east metro. With a little more attention to the dining room experience and a stronger flavor punch in the food, this could be a much more memorable neighborhood stop. read more

Don't judge this book by its cover. My buddy and I met here for lunch and we really enjoyed it. The place was casual, clean, and cozy inside but the outside didn't look great. The food lived up to the pics and reports I had seen beforehand. The fries were crispy and well seasoned (cajon dry rub) and my chicken sandwich was tasty. We had ranch and comeback sauce to dip but our server brought us a garlic aioli that was her fave. All were good. I would definitely try this place again. Loved the vibe and the food. It did get noisy when more people showed up (one was a loud talker), so that made it difficult to have a conversation, but I definitely recommend. I checked out Burnt Chicken and this spot was an ultimate vibe. From the moment you walk in, it feels like a true Black-owned spot with great energy and flavor all around. I tried three items including the Nashville hot chicken sandwich, which had a fire rub and a tasty sauce on the side. The mac and cheese was nice and creamy, and the banana foster made for the perfect dessert to finish off the night. There's street parking available, and the prices are pretty good, not too expensive at all. The service was dope and the employees were super nice, which made the experience even better. My wife and I had been hearing a lot about this St Paul hidden gem, so we finally decided to check it out for ourselves. When we walked in, it wasn't too busy, which I actually liked. A young man greeted us right away and gave us the option of a booth or a table, we went with a booth. He came back shortly after to take our drink order. I asked about the hibiscus lemonade, and when he said it was really good, I gave it a try. My wife got a Diet Coke. For food, we shared the Cajun mac and cheese, she ordered the voodoo smash burger, and I went with the Nashville hot chicken sandwich. It took a little while for the food to come out, and there was a small mix-up with the order, however they fixed it quickly and made things right. The food was excellent, seasoned perfectly and full of flavor. My chicken sandwich had the perfect amount of spice, and my wife really liked her burger. She's already talking about wanting to come back and try more things off the menu. The place itself has a cozy, slightly old-school vibe that we both liked. Everything looked clean, and the young man who helped us was polite, attentive and helpful. Even with the little hiccup, they handled it well, and that goes a long way with me. He was first cooking inside First Draft in North Loop, and now has his own spot in Saint Paul. Previously, owner and cook, Bernard Collins had Burnt Chicken as a pop up operation, then he was in First Draft in Minneapolis. Now, Burnt Chicken has been operating in their own restaurant for the past year in the former Ward 6/East Side Bar. I tried three of their sandwiches and all three were insanely good: - Fried Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich: Fried Chicken Thigh, Hot Oil, Hot Seasoning, Country Slaw, House Pickles, Come Back Sauce. (The heat was a very subtle heat. You can totally do it. Heard about this place and finally got to visit. There was street parking and it was kind of hard to find because theres no sign, but I'm sure they will fix that. Ordered 2 orders of wings, mac n cheese, and jambalaya rice. Everything was good flavor wise, the rice was a little undercooked in spots but the flavor was there. The bar isn't set up yet so for drinks I got a bottle of water and a can of coke. Staff was very friendly and even the cook spoke with us. From what I know, this is newly opened, so this review was primarily about the food since they still need to get the bar up and running. I wasn't too impressed by the fries, and the sauce/toppings on the sandwich weren't quite as good as the chicken itself.
