I'm giving two stars because I have had the burrito (bean and cheese) and loved it. Based on my most recent visit, I would give it one star. My lunch was awful. I had the deluxe tostado with asade-a hot mess with too much going on and little flavor to show for it. My son had the combo plate with chicken tacos and a flat lifeless Mountain Dew. He described the food as poorly seasoned and flavorless. To complete the luncheon, I was in a continuing battle with a fly while I ate lunch inside. First off, I'm only giving this place a two star because the size of the burritos stayed the same. I went here a while ago on a weekend and had great service. The jvc burrito was amazing and the people were friendly. I went here today, and the people were incredibly rude. And the jvc burrito was not as good as last time. It was mediocre. Typical fast food burrito place, nothing fancy about it. I stubbled across it because I went to the nearby by soccer store and it was lunch time. I had the JVC burrito Vic's Special. After eating it, I was, THAT's IT? Really all the fancy names for this? THey had the Ross Perot Burrito and the JVC, ITO Burrito, and stuff, but really, THAT's IT? THe burrito was bland and small. THey try to give you some lettuce to make it seem like a large plate or portion, but I was still hungry after spending over $8 on a burrito. Really? I've had better burritos at hamburger joints for half the price. Only reason why I gave an extra star was because the man handling the cashier gave me the impression he is a no non-sense type of guy which reminded me of my father. But not to brag, but my dad's burritos were at least a million times better than this place. read more

Like a lot of places in Pasadena, this spot is killer if you've grown up eating here and have a personal attachment to the food, but to the outsider, it just seems overrated. Was stoked to find a good bean and cheese burrito spot, but this one left me hanging. Texture of the beans were great, taste wasn't really standout. Beans were bland. Odd, almost sour hot sauce. Folks working here seem super nice, prices are great, but as with so much food in Pasadena, there's better elsewhere. I can see how you'd love this place if you'd been raised on the food, but to my mind, there are far superior bean and cheese burritos in East Los - Al & Bea's and Lupe's come to mind. read more

I've been coming to Burrito Express for years and have never been let down. It is a staple in my household and the times I have spent their grabbing a burrito with friends are memories I cherish. While the old man who worked at the counter (and I believe owns the establishment) has recently retired, his children have done a great job with management. The only suggestion I have is to be wary of making an order in on the phone, I have had my order misinterpreted twice! This place is amazing! Burrito express has the best refried beans I have tried, even better than those in Mexico. I dont know how they do it but the product is savory, smooth, and has a unique taste that other mexican restaraunts dont offer. There are several items that you must get from this place in order to experience what I am raving about. The JVC without meat, the Chimichanga with chicken (best fried burrito around), bean and cheese burrito, all meat burrito. Those are my top choices. I have tried the quesadilla as well and its not bad but those four items give this place my 5 stars. Also, their hot sauce is one of my favorites. I get 2-3 every time i visit this place and wish they would actually start packaging and selling it. Its that good! They also have a shaved ice corner thats open in the summers which is pretty good itself especially on a hot day. read more

Yum and fast! I live within walking distance, it is a semi regular zag from my normally vegetarian diet :) Service is really great, I can't believe people had problems with the little old man there, he is always really courteous to me :) I recommend the spicy green sauce, for a while I just got mild because I am really not big on spicy food, but the green sauce isn't uncomfortably spicy at all, just the right amount of flavor and kick. I always seem to get the JVC, but everything sounds great there. I really think if something has been around for as long as this joint has it must be somewhat reliable and for me it is. A Pasadena and Altadena institution for a long time now. I have eaten there since I was a little kid. My favorite item on the menu is the beef JVC VIC'S SPECIAL, spicy of course. The burritos have gotten smaller over the years, which is good for me, since I have gotten much larger. If you live in Pasadena or Altadena, it is a crime if you have not eaten here and enjoyed it. My folks had been regulars here ever since it opened in '79 (I believe). If you want some down home Mexican food this is a good place to start. They don't have too many items on their menu, but everything I've tried is delicious and their prices are great. My favorite is the quintessential bean and cheese burrito. Their tortillas are amazingly soft and the beans and cheese blend together deliciously. I would like to see them use fresh guacamole instead of the powdered stuff, but aside from that I have no complaints. I usually grab take out from here as they don't have too many tables and it's sometimes crowded in the evenings. Great place to get a quick, filling dinner at a reasonable price. Been coming here for years. Simply the best burritos in town. The best is the JVC. This thing is huge, better bring your appetite. I usually get it with beef, but without meat is great too. Also, be sure to try it with olives, onions, and cilantro. Mouth watering. The funny thing with the burritos is that a few of the names are out dated, like the Ross Perot, and the Judge Ito. Does anyone remember Ross Perot? And Judge Ito is washed up, he's close to retirement. Their other food is great,too. The enchilada's are tasty, and so is the taquito plate.
