My go to the last couple years to get my truck and my fiancé's car safety checked. One of the reasons why I chose to give my business to this place was because of the small family-owned feel to it. I went in today to get it safety checked and they turned me away. They stated that my truck needed a recon. The same truck they safety checked the past two years, and that has been safety checked at Midas before that. Haven't touched it. When I talked to the manager/owner (I presume) he seemed agitated that I didn't take his employee's word. Should have sent my fiancé in for a different result. I would think there was decent service at this establishment although I would not know as I was misinformed. I called for details and things needed to get this thing completed as this place was recommended for a safety check which in my opinion are worthless. I understand the smog test in CA, but a safety check to make sure the windshield wipers work is beyond me...or better yet that the tint is not the right shade. If your friend runs the shop things are all good if not - well then they are not. HAHA, that is Hawaii for you .....I hear roll off peoples lips regularly. Four starts bc I called ahead to make sure that I had all the proper documentation, as this car is from another state. Of course when I drove across town, I was told oh....yeah that is not the case. Wing-nut is the name I will give to the fellow I spoke to on the phone. Even though I am a little peeved, I like that there was full service here - AWESOME! After calling around nearby service stations to see if they do safety checks on Saturdays (most don't!) - I found Burt's, on the corner of Houghtailing and School Streets. Whoa, busy station! As I pulled up, I had to double-park behind cars and jump in a 4-person deep line to wait to get my safety check done at 9:30am on the last Saturday of the month. Worth the ~20 minute wait cause I aint about to take off work to get this stuff done! As hectic as this station appeared, it was a well oiled machine - everyone knew their place and got customers in and out, and moved and shifted cars around, and pumped gas - it was neat to watch. The service was quick, painless, and these guys were nice!! I can always appreciate hardworking, sweaty workers (haha!) who still manage to smile at their customers and provide great service. After my sticker was on my bumper, paid ~$25 and was about to leave, the older man (Burt?) came out of the office to take a picture of the back of my SUV on his ipad, and explained to me the new safety inspection "pass" paper they issue (no longer those old school carbon copies) that needs to stay in my car at all times with my reg and insurance. Very helpful and very pleased with the service here! Only downside is the congested lot and tricky parking when it gets busy - but i guess that's every full-service station for you. read more

Went here to do a full check up and may be do an oil change. But nope, the service guys here are so honest, they just tell me no need to do oil change yet. Very nice staff and operates very quickly, you can refuel gas here and have them do a car wash and auto checkups in no time. read more

SIGNIFICANTLY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. I scheduled an appointment for safety check on Monday. Came in and was told my signal light color was wrong, even though these were the same signal lights I've had for the past few years AND Burt's is who has passed my safety with THESE SAME LIGHTS! Ok ok, rules are rules. I go and change out my lights and come back for a new appointment the following day, Tuesday. I was denied by the SAME WORKER who just saw me yesterday! I did make a mistake and brought in my new insurance card which begins in August, and this is July 20. Again, rules are rules. HOWEVER, I asked the service guy if I could just run back to work near by to get my updated insurance cards I had at work. I would be back in about 10 min. He says, "no, you won't be back in time and have to make a new appointment." I had a 1:45p appointment, they never spoke to me until after 1:50p. All good, just 5 mins...however, I could not be spared this same courtesy if I returned just a few minutes later with my current cards. This guy had NO willingness to help me or work with me on getting my car safety checked. I came to them twice and I guess expected too much understanding and patience. NEVER going back here and I don't recommend you do either, at least as long as this guy is working there. I should have gotten his name, but he was an older guy with thick glasses. Short fellow and a little stalky. He is the reason I'll never go back no matter how convenient this is, close to my work. Waste of time and horrendous service or lack there of. read more

As a former worker here, I would have to say that Burts union 76 gas station is one of the few gas stations that has people put the gas for you, and check the condition of your car. Workers are more than happy to check your car if you don't put gas (tip would be nice). Being a former worker, I'd say the best part of working there was actually having customers become happy and grateful that their vehicle is in safe driving condition. read more

My trailblazers water pump went bad so I went there today through recommendation from a friend of mine around 10:30 am and spoke to Daniel , he took my car in and told me come pick it up by 5 pm, he called me 4:50 telling me the car is ready to go. I had also some issue with alignment the steering wheel not centered and told him to check and let me know what's wrong with it, so when i went to pick up my car he raised the car on the jack and moved the wheel with his hands, which not supposed to be that loose but the rubbers was worn off and showed me with flash light and i was WOW no more rubber by the joints, he told me these items has to be replaced and spend time with me and explained that a s of now i need one upper left arm cover and one lower arm cover left side to replace, that was very nice of him not pushing me to replace 4 of them, but I said please give me 2 estimates replacing the 2 bad and another estimate to replace 4 of them. He said he will check it out tomorrow which is 9/29/15 and let me know if i need to decide to replace 2 or 4 of them. I was so happy with the service that done on my car today and waiting for his estimate tomorrow... I recommend this place to people that don't want to spend arm and leg taking their cars to dealer for repairs with honest mechanic and great service. Thank You Daniel. read more

Had my car towed to Burt's late Monday afternoon, the mechanic was gone for the day. The next day the mechanic called at about 9:30am told me what the problem was and the estimate cost I told him to do the repair and at 11.00am he called back and told me the car was ready to pick up. This was the 2nd time I went to this 76 station, and I have not been disappointed. This time a wonderful mechanic named Keith helped me. I have to say, every mechanic there along with the attendants etc., really know what they are doing. Everyone there greets you and makes you feel welcome. The service is outstanding and fast. They never mislead you or charge you for things you don't need. I have never been to a more honest and friendly station ever! I will never take my car to anyone else. I wrote another review before, the 1st time I came across this station. It seems this review did not get posted. But because of the treatment I recieved the 1st time, I decided to go back. I was informed by 2 other stations of a problem with my car. Each of them telling me my car needed a new water pump. When I took it in to Burt's station, a wonderful man named Ray helped me. Ray found the correct problem, and fixed my car in less then a day and was kind enough not over charge me. He always informed me of what was needed for my car, and he is one of the nicest individuals you could ever meet. This was the first time I ever trusted a gas station so much. Arrived there at 800. I ask for a safety check inspection, told me I was number 3 in line and after waiting over an hour and a half. The guy skipped me and helped another customer. Awesome customer service! Friendly, polite and honest employees. I needed to get my window fixed because it wouldn't go down, went to a different auto repair shop at first and they wanted to charge me almost $500, so a friend of mine recommended Burt's Union Service and the total cost AND a safety inspection (I was due for one) was only $240! I'm very pleased! Always a busy gas station, but that's probably because of their awesome services. read more

I lost my safety check paperwork so I asked fire stone, who did it, if I could reprint the paperwork and not do the safety check over again. They told me I had to get a new safety check. So I made an appointment at Burt's to get the safety check done and they informed me that it should only cost seven dollars from fire Stone to reprint it. I didn't want to deal with the crap from Firestone arguing it so I just got a new one done at Burt's. Now makes me wonder about the honesty of Firestone regarding other work I get done there. I've always gotten other things done at Burt's so this just shows and reinforces that I need to stick with this business because they've done right by me with other things like fixing my flat tire. read more

Brake job done by mechanic named Ray. New shoes, caliper, master cylinder. Straight forward communication ( up front in a polite way without the double talk, confusing jargon). Fast service and kept me updated with completion time. I sought quotes from 2 other mechanics that predicted inaccurate causes of fluid leaks and higher quotes. His was the most reasonable along with him projecting a concern to do the job right. Good, professional attitudes and service. I'm happy/car is happy. read more

I had a screw in my tire. I was about to take my car to Lex Brodie's and leave my car there to get the tire fixed. It usually takes them 4-5 hours. My friend tells me to take it to Burt's Union and they have always fixed his tires on the spot. I went there and inquired if they can fix a tire. One of the guys there tells me to pull it up to the gas pump. Another guy looks at it and adds air to my tire. He then tells me to pull it on the side which I did. I can see him playing with my tire and so I quickly rushed out of my car with the tire rim lock key. He already had the tire plug reamer tool in my tire and was about to insert the plug. I have never seen anyone fix a flat without taking the tire off. After inserting the plug and cutting off the excess plug, he sprayed water to test for leaks (there was none), and then he checked the tire pressure. I paid $15 for him to fix the tire in about 10 minutes. I was stoked. In and out. That's how it should be. read more

went there because there was a screw lodged in my rear tire. this station is one of the few remaining FULL service stations in town. the guy said it's in a bad place & a plug may or may not work, but he'll check anyway. he said it'll cost $15 to do the job. he came back with pliers and a bottle of liquid. he then yanked out the screw (it was a rather short screw), sprayed the liquid on the spot, looked for signs of leaking air. NOTHING..so he said I'm 'good to go'. WOW! if he was money-hungry, he would've probably charged me to plug the puncture anyways. read more

This commentary of my experience at the 76 UNION @ 1340 SCHOOL ST. is directed to EVERYONE looking to get their car safety checked!! The owner (BURT) of this gas station does the safety checks. He should not because I think he is TOO OLD & FORGETFUL. Yesterday I went in to get mine but he told me I needed a new front tire before he would pass me. Therefore, I went immediately and took care of it. I came back and HAD TO WAIT IN LINE again! He took a picture, wrote some notes, and said, "OK, you're all good to go." So naturally, I am thinking he had placed my new safety sticker on for me. WRONG!!! I get home and I walked around back of my car, and see that my OLD TAGS WERE STILL THERE. Then I look at my paperwork and I still had the temporary one he first gave me. Therefore, I had to drive back to that station to get my safety sticker and new card (to keep in my glovebox). I get there, and start asking someone to help me since I was not given my safety sticker & revised paperwork. Finally one guy told me I should go inside and talk to the owner, so I did. I went inside the office and told him he forgot to give me my safety sticker after he passed me just a couple hours prior. He says to me... "TOO BAD It's CLOSING TIME, COME BACK TOMORROW @ 6am". So he starts to push me away from his office door so he could close it on me!! So I pushed that door back open, and I told him I paid for that safety check and I was passed so you OWE ME THOSE SAFETY TAGS TODAY! I told him that I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BE PENALIZED DUE TO YOUR INABILITY TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR JOB. I DO NOT HAVE MY TAG OR THE PROPER PAPERWORK I PAID YOU FOR. JUST GIVE ME MY TAGS & PAPERWORK so I can go, then you can close up for the day. I DID EVERYTHING YOU ASKED, AND I ALREADY PAID YOU." I even went so far as to explain my urgency was due to a hearing I had the following morning, so I NEEDED THESE DOCUMENTS FOR COURT TOMORROW." His first words were "F**K YOU!!! I DON'T CARE!" Then he continued with more cursing and refused to make good on his mistake. I was not about to be pushed aside when he clearly screwed up and was too arrogant to admit it and do the right thing by simply giving me my tags. He IS THE OWNER, so if he wanted to he could have done so in a couple of minutes! NO... he did not have time to do any of that but he had plenty of time to stand there arguing with me and calling me a "BI**H". So I continued to insist that I be given my tags and asked him if this is how he TREATS HIS CUSTOMERS?? He repeated "F**K YOU, GET THE H*LL OUT OF MY STATION. I absolutely felt as if I had the right to ASK FOR WHAT I PAID FOR.... IN ADDITION, I HAD TO WAIT IN LINE TWICE TO GET this finished for tomorrows hearing!!! So he goes over to open his cash register, all the while yelling rude comments at me, and pulls out the money I paid him. Then he yells at me "NOW YOU HAVE YOUR MONEY and I don't owe you anything!! Now GET OUT OF HERE AND DON'T YOU EVER COME BACK!" I was totally AMAZED at his LACK OF SELF CONTROL, and how UNPROFESSIONAL he was. The fact is, he had plenty of time to YELL OBSCENITIES at me, and then take the time to open the register to return my money...BUT he somehow didn't have time to simply give me MY SAFETY TAGS!! I STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT NO-ONE GOES THERE FOR YOUR SAFETY CHECK or anything mechanical either. As long as "BURT" the old crusty owner is alive and still thinks, he is competent to be ISSUING A HIGHLY REGULATED DOCUMENT (at that location, OR ANYWHERE). HONESTLY, you would be better off going ANYWHERE ELSE but there! .....FORGET ABOUT IT!!!! Besides all that, THERE IS NOWHERE TO SIT... (They do not EVEN HAVE CHAIRS for their customers). BELIEVE ME IT IS SO HOT and very UNCOMFORTABLE standing around there waiting in the sun, WHILE HE TAKES HIS SWEET TIME to complete just ONE safety check!! PLEASE do yourself a favor Go ANYWHERE ELSE BUT THERE!!!! Not only is the owner a RUDE MAN, he obviously has ANGER ISSUES! Avoid that senile old man., and his DIRTY SERVICE STATION TOO! Tools are everywhere and the actual garage is a TOTAL UNORGANIZED MESS!! It looks as if 10 YEARS HAS GONE BY WITHOUT SOMEONE DOING SOME CLEANING UP OR JUST PUTTING THINGS BACK IN AN ORDERLY AND SOMEWHAT ORGANIZED FASHION. This is THE WORST EXPERIENCE I HAVE HAD TO DATE DURING MY 20 YEARS HERE IN HONOLULU! I WOULD have given them ZERO stars, except there are one or two nice young men there that have always been polite to me. The employees here have been extremely helpful to me on more than 1 occasion. First of all, they normally charge less for gas than other gas stations, or the same as the stations across the intersection, but they will pump the gas for you. Early this morning (not the first early morning), I was low on air on all of my tires. I went here for help, and the gentleman was more than happy to help. Also at 8 am on a Sunday, was another man who was trying to get help because his giant truck wouldn't start. There are no auto mechanics there on Sunday, but the kind employees still try to help. Also, when I previously came here for a safety check, the employee couldn't pass me, but did let me know how bald my tires were & to change it for my own safety. As you can tell, I know nothing about cars, so I'm grateful for the employees here. I don't even live in Kalihi, but I come here all of the time because of the excellent service that they provide. I took my SUV in for repair. They replaced the fuel pump. However, I was still experiencing same problems. I took it back and they found out that the part they ordered had a malfunction. They replaced the part with no extra charge. SUV works great. The cost to replace the fuel pump was reasonable, not outragous like most repair shops. Service to repair was fast. They also went out of their way to fix the latch on my engine hood and did not charge me for that service. I also went back to get a safety check for a used car I bought. I was fourth in line. When it was my turn, an older gentleman ("gramps") helped me. He told me he could not do the safety check because my insurance was not effective until a couple weeks later. Wow, this "borderline geriatric" guy was thorough, efficient, and had good eyes well enough to read my insurance card. I think I waited about 20 minutes. They are busy and I think it's because they are reliable and don't overcharge for repairs. I would dismiss comments by Romeo D. All he needed was a safety check. To me, most important was the cost and service for repair. Also, the mechanic was informatiive and polite and returned my calls. read more
