I came here cause hubby recommended them. They take walk ins as well as appointments. I came today at around 8 am to get a safety check. My sticker expires at the end of March and today was a good day to do it since I am off from work. Hubby directed me here. It's located behind a gated area. I guess the guy wasn't there as we entered. We didn't need a ticket and just drove straight through. It's in a garage type business behind some buildings. The guy told us to drive the car in. The safety check was $25. It was quick and easy. All you need to show is current registration and current insurance. Not bad. He had other cars in there for other reasons. The guy helping us was super nice and managed to get us in and out. I highly recommend this location for safety checks. read more

Great place to take your vehicle to get repairs, maintenance and safety checks done. It's a little tricky to find. Just ask the guard at the booth on 501 Sumner Street. They will give you a ticket to give to Yama's to get a validation stamp Drive straight towards the fence turning left pass the 1st auto shop keep driving down Peets Alley then half way on the left you will find Yama's. Park outside and go inside to get assistance. Appointments are greatly appreciated but they do accommodate walk-ins. As in my case...I needed to get a safety check done on my vehicle since it will expire at the end of this month. I figured it's still early in the month and I arrived there at 8am. They were already open and only a few customers were ahead of me. I was in and out pretty quickly and it only cost me $25.00...Will be definitely returning next year for my Safety Check read more

I went to bring my brother's car for a safety and as I parked the car, Jhun approached me and asked if I had Recon for the exhaust. I said no, you don't need one. Jhun said ANY modification to the vehicle it needs a Recon Permit. He then proceeds to look at the left rear tire and said the car wouldn't pass because it's too low. My brother never lowered the vehicle, it's stock height. Jhun then said, it has adjustable shocks, you need a Recon Permit. I asked since when do you need a Recon Permit for an exhaust system and stock height with adjustable shocks? He said "ever since." Jhun then said he doesn't have time for this. Keep in mind he didn't even ask me to pull in the garage to do an inspection. I should've asked for a colleague of his to verify his "information" but I was on a time crunch. My brother wanted to talk to him on the phone. Jhun said look at the DMV website. Well Jhun: What types of modifications do not require a Reconstructed Vehicle Permit? The most common modifications that do not require a Reconstructed Vehicle Permit are: [Installation of an aftermarket exhaust system.] Car is basically stock and wasn't even going to ask him to look the other way. Fair assessment/inspection but Jhun probably had a bad day or whatever, not going to recommend this place because of Jhun's lack of knowledge and poor attitude. My car is very old. But not in a "classic car" type of way. In an... old way. 23 years old, to be exact. But I hold onto it, because the last time it was towed the old tow dude said that I should keep any Toyota made before 1996. And youd think the fact that a tow dude told me this as we dragged my lifeless car back to Kaihi AGAIN would make his words a little less meaningful, but I took it as scripture and will hold onto it forever. However, the only reason my wonderful car starts in the morning is because of the magic that happens at Yama's Auto Care. I was taking my Camry to another mechanic, who said that because it was so ancient, he couldnt diagnose it with his fancy diagnosing thingie and commenced with what seemed like a whole lot of guessing that cost hundreds of dollars. And after all that it was just as broken as before. At Yama's they do not guess. Mark and his men know exactly what is wrong and how to fix it. Since taking it to Yama's it has not been towed. Which is fantastic, because having it towed three times in two weeks gave me a little bit of PTSD. Yama's also does safety checks by appointment, which means no waiting in line or wondering who is next or going to the mechanic at 5:45am to be first in line because I was pulled over the day before for a safety sticker that expired three months ago. Not that that ever happened. And it definitely did not happen more than once. So I love Yamas because they make my car work. I also love them because they are very close to my house. I took the day off of work to run some errands and that included doing my safety check. I went to Hickam Auto Skills Center and they gave me unsatisfactory results, so I panicked and my dad referred me to Yama's. I called Yama's right away and a friendly gentleman told me that he can do my safety check right now. I happily drove there and it wasn't hard to find as long as you have GPS on your phone. I pulled into the driveway and Mark guided me into the garage. He was so friendly! While Darryl was doing my safety check, Mark and I talked story as if we knew each other for a long time! The safety check was very quick and I would've been out of there much faster if it weren't for us talking too much. The safety check was $25 and the guys are outstanding and super friendly. Definitely call ahead because they may be busy working on other cars, but I can guarantee they will help you no matter how busy they are since safety checks are a fairly quick task.
