    Schnitzel

Went for a quick bite by myself while starving in town on a Wednesday night. Sat at the bar and got the tasty tangy Syrocco (Syrah from Morocco), along with the cabbage, artichokes, and schnitzel. Was pleasantly surprised! The artichokes were delectable and perfectly zingy with way the labneh. The 700° cabbage was so tender i didn't even need a knife it wad crazy. So delicious. The chicken schnitzel and whatever red butter with a kick it comes with was phenomenal, crispy, and thin. As it should be! Will be back.

This restaurant has been on my list to try for a while, and finally came here with a friend for dinner. I fell in love with the elegant decor of this place, filled with light, flowers, cool artwork, accents of wood, along with a yellow, red and blue color scheme. There was a beautiful garden back area that was enclosed. The whole space was lovely with plenty of room and there was a warm, comfortable ambiance throughout. My friend and I shared the Greek Salad, Zaatar Fries, Taboon Bread as well as whole Dorade Fish with potatoes and watercress salad. The Greek Salad consisted of cucumber, tomato, red onion, and feta cheese with seasoning and olive oil dressing. This was fresh, crunchy, with a bit of acidity. The Zaatar Fries were perfectly crispy, and sprinkled with flavorful spices. The Taboon Bread was served warm from the oven. It was soft and tasty. Whole Dorade Fish was a sight to behold! Fried to perfection, delightfully tender, flaky, and well seasoned. The roasted potatoes were satisfyingly charred and full of flavor. I'm not a fan of watercress, so didn't care much for the salad. Even though I was quite full, I couldn't resist ordering the Silan (shredded halva) Sundae dessert with milk gelato. This also came with rice crispy brittle, caramel sauce and caramelized pistachios. This was light, creamy, just the right amount of sweetness and oh so delicious! I particularly enjoyed the Halva, which was sesame-y and wonderful. All the ingredients worked well together. Service was excellent. Our waiter was attentive and knew the menu well. We were well taken care of throughout our meal. I would return to try the Moroccan Fish or Kebab Halabi.

Had a great Sunday brunch here! The garden in back is very nice and the service was great. The highlights were the feta, pita bread, and most importantly, the lamb arayes!

Very solid. Enjoyed the 700 degree cabbage and the Moroccan fish. My friend ordered the Sea bream which bi didn't have but looked amazing. I even found a nice wine on the per glass menu, an Albarino. Id definitely come back.

Great restaurant! We had the spicy feta and taboon bread, burrata, cabbage, and the chicken. The spicy feta dip was delicious and not too spicy. The taboon bread was fluffy and delicious. The burrata with the beets was great and I loved the artichoke chips. The cabbage was charred and soft. Loved the combination of all the ingredients. The chicken was delicious and had a nice spice flavor. The Cabernet was a nice wine. Also enjoyed the Syrah as well. Our server Lewis was very knowledgeable and was very nice. Would definitely go back for the food, great service and cool ambiance.

2nd visit here...Small but well executed menu...for apps defintely get the hummus and zataar pita (comes separate), for ghe mains get the schnitzel or moroccan fish tagine...For dessert you must get the salin which was ice cream with halva and was amazing.

There a number of good Israeli restaurants in NYC. Laser Wolf is perhaps the best known. Bustan is among the best, and the best value. The chicken mushakan was particularly memorable. And the standard dishes, such as humus, were all as good as anywhere in the City. We will be back

Velvety with great mouth feel and lovely smokiness this was so good w/ their table bread Turkish Ravioli (Manti) (APP, 3/5) - Chewy little nuggets w. yogurt filling, it was pretty enjoyable though my colleague gave ma "Meh" since she makes them at home and probably has high bar. It was good for maybe the first 3 or 4, so perhaps better ordered for larger groups. Shepherd Salad (APP, 4/5) - Fresh, bright(as in vinegar), and herbaceous, we added feta cheese to it and it was perfect balance to our entree. Kofte Kebab (MAIN, 4/5) - Not too dry with packed flavor of all the herbs & beef, I really enjoyed my dish. Went great with all the other accouterments such as slightly cinged wedge of tomato and onion slices, all frolicking on a bed of warm rice that had a nice bite. Adana Kebap (MAIN, 4/5) - My colleague had this one, and I tried a piece. It was juicy and had no hint of gaminess which is always a plus for lamb. 3. Service (3/5) - This being a mom & pop store, I think they're short on staff. Usually they're all in the back cooking, so you do need to be a bit patient to flag someone down. But I'm sure they're more attentive during busy hours. (We went during weekday) Overall, Hakki Baba is a solid turkish mom & pop shop that delivers on great authentic flavor at a reasonable price. In the sea of turkish restaurants in Cliffside Park area, this one is one of my favorite. Pay them a visit!

Also plusses in Miriam's favor were the fact that I could easily make a reservation (they use SevenRooms) and its proximity to the Museum of Natural History. Many of the menu items looked appealing. Two of us ordered the latkes Benedict ($27) which I loved. Instead of Canadian bacon, you're served smoked salmon. And swap out the regular hollandaise for a harissa version. There was also za'atar labneh and a chopped salad with cucumbers and tomatoes on the side, also delectable. The third person ordered the traditional shakshuka ($24) which also earned acclaim. I have to give a thumbs up to the hummus. The hostess was peppy and welcoming. Our server was more scarce towards the end of the meal for some reason, but she was nice, and the busboy seemed cool. While there's outside seating too, it was a zillion degrees so the air conditioned and classy dining room was the right choice for us.

I have been twice now, once on the East Side and again last night on the West Side, and I came away both times with the same impression: that some places are content to simply be good, over and over, without announcing it. The watermelon salad is sweet and hot at the same time, feta and mint against Italian chile, and it is the right thing to have first. The schnitzel is what it ought to be. The kebab, lamb and beef together, is the thing I would order if I were only allowed one thing. The knafeh cups are better on the East Side, where the crisp kataifi is laid over the cream rather than baked into a shell around it. On the West Side you have to break into the cup before you get anywhere. On the East Side the spoon goes straight down through the crunch and into the cream, and that is the whole difference. But it is the people I keep thinking about. They are kind without performing kindness, which is harder than it sounds. Last night I watched the room work, water poured, plates cleared, dishes set down, and it was never quite the same hand doing it, and never once the wrong one. A floor moves that way only when everyone on it is paying attention to everyone else. Two visits, two neighborhoods, one restaurant. I suspect that is the point.

When we arrived it was empty however by the time we finished, there were many tables filled. The bad thing is that there was only 1 server during brunch. We ordered for apps, the grand mezze dish with all of the different spreads, such as hummus, red pepper, tzatziki, eggplant, wow! It was delicious and to top it off they have homemade pita bread! Which was a huge highlight! Even my baby loved their homemade pita bread! For our mains, we ordered branzino, which was such a small sad piece, literally just half of a filet. Would never order again. We also got the mixed meats which came with kafta, lamb, chicken a few pieces of each, and also this was so sad, the pieces were SO small. And we also got this Fattat Jaj (which is a 6 layer dish with chicken, rice chickpeas). Honestly all of the mains were such a disappointment. Full of rice, not a lot of meat in any of the dishes. Especially the Fattat Jaj, which literally was just rice with a bunch of small crispy pita bread, barely had any chicken. While we really enjoyed the mezze platter, especially the homemade pita bread, all of the mains were SO small and terrible. Full of rice and salad and barely any meats (despite we ordered all meat and fish dishes). Sad portions. Would not return.

Taverna Veranda attracts cool, chill folks who enjoy good music, company, and food. And you can come alone and be treated with dignity by both patrons and staff. It is that kind of environment. No cheap elitism, no wannabes. I came on a Friday night to enjoy their seafood special and the DJ. If you want to carry a conversation, maybe avoid Friday nights. If you wanna dance then Friday night is good. DJ spins a selection of high beat Arabic music that will get you moving for sure. I had the pink snapper, which was huge and is meant to be shared among three people. It comes with two choices of sides and i recommend the spicy broccoli and spicy fries. For mezze you must try the babaganoush. It comes with pomegranate seeds and fresh chopped cherry tomatoes, for a mildly tart and sweet nuance. It comes with pita bread roasted with rosemary. Kefte is another winner; bite size meatballs with tzatsiki sauce. But something you rarely see in ordinary middle Eastern restaurants is the saganaki. You must order it. Especially if you are having a stiff drink...it will help soak up that 40% proof alcohol. The cheese was gooey melty perfection, sizzling hot with lemon wedge on top. You have the sweet tardiness of the lemon combined with the saltiness of the cheese. Speaking of stiff drinks, the señorita is strong and well made. If you had a particularly rough week, you will appreciate the bartender. The glass is large, with about 1.7 Oz of Don Julio 1942 añejo. The view is lovely.
