First time here today, came for lunch. We ordered 1/2 pound of chicken breast and the pork rib plate. Came with cole slaw, potato salad and baked beans (you can get mac salad or chili beans as other options) as well as toasted "garlic" bread. Gabe (according to the receipt) helped us at the counter, and was very nice and helpful. He checked in on us a couple of times as well, service was very good. Didn't wait too long for food, but there were only a couple of other tables occupied when we got there so that helped. Overall, the food wasn't bad. My pork ribs, baby backs I'm pretty sure though they don't specify, had a nice smoky flavor and my wife's chicken did as well. Sides were good, though the baked beans were pretty soupy. The thing that keeps our rating down was the distinct lack of seasoning pretty much across the board. If there was any rub at all on my ribs, I couldn't taste it, the mild sauce was just a sweet liquid with no real savory taste though the spicy sauce was much thicker and had more flavor, and the garlic bread had zero garlic taste, it was just a buttered hoagie roll. Did they forget the garlic part? I'd like to recommend it more, but I can't based on this visit. Will I go back? Maybe to try something else, but that's a big maybe. read more

I grabbed the veggie bowl with chicken, and for $15? That's a win. Solid scoop of rice, crunchy cabbage, carrots, broccoli, topped with smoky barbecue chicken and that wild, personality-packed sauce. It was giving "I care about my macros, but I also like flavor." Next time though? We're dialing it back to mild or regular. I've learned my lesson. Yesterday I was house sitting for family in the area and drove by this BBQ place and thought I'd get some food to go. I got the tri-tip, it was so tender with delicious bbq sauce on the side! I got the baked beans (delicious!) and chose potato salad, and cole slaw as my sides. Not everyone makes a tasty potato salad but Buster's is delicious and their coleslaw reminds me of KFC's which is my favorite! And, you get two large pieces of garlic toast! The food is fantastic! I'm picky about tri-tip and most places disappoint me but Buster's did their perfect. It was so good I didn't even use bbq sauce. The chicken was juicy and not dry at all. I ordered a tri tip sandwich and asked for it as rare as possible. I know that's not always easy, but I ask so I can hopefully get something from the thicker part. I'm very happy to see this business expand from their roots in Ventura to Thousand Oaks. The venue is in a shopping center and has plenty of free parking. The inside has plenty of seats unlike their location in Ventura. The food is just as good as their original location and is the same price. I enjoyed my tri tip sandwich and my wife enjoyed her tri tip rice bowl. The service is also very good and makes it a nice weekend lunch or dinner outing. Lunch time and really wanted to like this place. There's not a lot of options for decent BBQ in Thousand California. Tri Tip was OK. Good smoke ring, grey cold center. Needed more rub, more salt, more... Bbq flavor. No bark, no spice, just marginally salted. Sauce was unequivocally the worst. Canned product from a 1 gal jug and randomly seasoned with ... cumin? In this day and age, there's better out there. Cole slaw was from a premade container. Somewhat disappointed and disgusted all in one. Avoid entirely. There's no excuse not to make your own. Chili beans this flavor have zero place in a bbq restaurant. At least if you're going to empty a can of precooked beans into a container, leave it alone and not the random spice concoction that goes in. The Meat Locker is 3 blocks away. read more
