Let's start with things I liked about this place. You can by the meat by the oz. This is a big plus for me because I'm not a big person and when I want BBQ I don't want half of chicken. I just want a serving size that's right for me. You can mix and match sides, they have cornbread, and the sauces and food aren't bad. The baked beans were good but I like more of a smokehouse BBQ as far as chicken goes so this chicken was maybe a little clean for my taste when I I'm in the mood for BBQ. I guess it's personal preference here though. I'd still eat it. The Mac N Cheese, I'm sorry to say but it was pretty bland. It was basically a white sauce with not much flavor. It was ok once I salted it but I think they can do a lot better and hope they will improve upon this receipe. The cornbread also wasn't my favorite. I think I had a few bites. I wish I could give more constructive feedback on this but I don't recall exactly what about it didn't hit the spot. I'll update if I try it again in the future. read more

I have a friend who lives out in Thousand Oaks and about 5 months ago, he had not one but THREE strokes! Needless to say, recovery has been slow and brutal but he is making improvements all the time. He has been stuck on hospital and rehab food and was recently cleared to eat "normal" food (it does not have to be softened for him). I asked him what he wanted for lunch but it was a trick question as I know he loves BBQ. He nor his wife have ever eaten here so I swung by on the way to the rehab and picked up pork ribs, dark meat chicken, cole slaw and baked beans. When I got to him, he requested we eat outside as he is stuck inside so much of the time. The three of us had a lovely time and he chowed down on everything except for beans as his meds give him a sensitive stomach. He could not finish it all but his wife told me he polished it off at dinner. I want to give kudos to the nice treatment I received from Jenny (or Genni...not sure) the owner and James, her son. They made sure I had everything I needed for this special lunch. BTW, to those that complain here or anywhere else about the cost of food in restaurants apparently do not buy food for their families. Beef and pork and just about anything else have skyrocketed and when you add in labor, overhead, insurance and (gasp) some profit, it IS higher than we have seen ever. Such is life. read more

Finally got around to trying this place after saying it smelled so good every time we went to the Starbucks next door. It was SO YUMMY! We ordered the tri-tip burrito with a side of mac and cheese, and a tri tip sandwich with onion rings. Everything was delicious! We are still so full and it's been 6 hours, lol. The reason i'm giving 3 stars is simply because of the service and how the guy at the register ( tall light skin guy) was treating customers and his coworker. He had such a nasty tone with his colleague telling him " man keep pushing these orders out" as if he wasn't moving as fast as he could. He also was taking orders with a stank attitude as if we were an inconvenience. If you don't like your job then quit or don't show but don't bring everyone else down with you. I am a big fan of barbecue and I have high respect for many of the restaurants in the area, so the competition is strong. I always give credit where it is due, but when it comes to chicken this place really falls short. The chicken is some of the driest and toughest I have ever had in Thousand Oaks. It was more like chewing through the Arizona desert than enjoying good smoked barbecue. When I want chicken instead of beef I actually end up walking over to Chipotle in the same parking lot, which should not be the case at a barbecue restaurant. If you come here the beef and pork are the safer choices. But if you are looking for good chicken you may want to look elsewhere until they make some serious improvements. I went to Ranch Hand BBQ this weekend and it was great. We were welcomed and all our questions were answered genuinely and by a very friendly and helpful staff member. We ordered brisket, tri-tip and pulled pork sandwiches, potato salad, coleslaw and the ever non-negotiable, corn bread muffins. I had the brisket, it was soft, Smokey and had great flavor. My husband loved the tri-tip, his bbq meat of choice, he said it was excellent. My son had the pulled pork- he said it was great. The original bbq sauce was well balanced- not too sweet or tangy, I really liked it. But let me say a few words of praise for the bread- I often have issues with the bread used on bbq sandwiches, but these lacked all the issues of other bbq spots- the bread was sturdy, never got soggy (even today for the leftover half of my sandwich), but it wasn't dry at all- which is almost always a problem with bread at bbq spots. The bread also had good flavor, its own highlight (rarely ever experienced in these types of casual bbq spots). That was a long description, but hey, it's a personal pet peeve and I couldn't been happier with the sandwich. I liked the potato salad, no big raw chunks of onion, not too saucy/wet, but good flavor and nice big chunks of potato. The coleslaw flavor was good, a little too wet for my personal tastes- but I'd get it again. My family are obsessed with cornbread muffins- it's a whole thing... we loved them! Again, not dry at all, but also not gooey and undercooked, which you sometimes can get at places. They were not overly sweet, they were serve, served with butter and honey, which my kids used their entire honey packets - because, well, kids. We ate there, the restaurant is casual and comfortable enough, decorated kind of cute. We had two staff come over to check on how our meal was. But I don't care for the cole slaw and last time I went in I got beef ribs instead of baby back-and the were stone cold even though it was only a 5 minute drive home. I typically prefer this over the other BBQ chains that are local but m not always pleased w the results. Most of the time but not every time. Food was four stars. The beef ribs and the pork ribs were pretty tender and flavorful. Mac n cheese tasted very plain and under seasoned like boxed Mac n cheese. I'm knocking a star because of the service/the workers attitude. They close at 8 and this couple came in and ordered around 7:35. They seated themselves and as they were waiting for their food they noticed the workers cleaning up to close soon. The lady went up to the worker in the front and was so happy to change their order to-go because she didn't want to hold them up from closing on time. The worker then said "your order was already made to go" as if she never had the option of sitting in to eat in the first place. She was a little taken aback and I definitely was to hearing that interaction. Ranch Hand is a solid spot for BBQ if your in the area and trying to satisfy your bbq craving. I'd heard a lot of people rave about this place and I finally made it for lunch on a weekday. It didn't disappoint but also I'm not sure this spot met my expectations after hearing all the hype for years. The best thing about this spot in my opinion is the service. The guys working behind the counter were super friendly and patient with our party as we looked over their menu. They have a great menu, a huge menu honestly. I was really impressed with all of the bbq meat options and sides. Also their appetizers looked fire, it was really hard to narrow down our choices. Once we did place our order we continued to be impressed with service. Despite a busy lunch rush the guys were attentive and made our stop enjoyable as they continue to check in with the patrons, provided everything we needed in one swoop to the tables, and definitely used their down time to clean and such. As for the food there were some hits and misses. I'd say the sides were "mid". The coleslaw was forgettable and the Macaroni salad was just okay. My friend had the Mac and cheese and recommend it so I would get that next time. Also comparable to what other reviews said, the issue I had with the meats were that they were all Luke warm. My pulled pork was on the cold side and the hot links were semi warm. It was strange. I think most people want their bbq hot like it's coming off the grill. Room for improvement there. Aside from the temperature I really really liked my hot links! They had a nice snap to them and I would definitely rank their sweet bbq sauce a 5/5. The pulled pork I could do without but I would definitely come back for the hot links again. My friends also said their burgers here are stellar so I would like to give this spot another try. It's a friendly neighborhood business that I want to support and I think if they were able to work out some of the kinks (like getting the meat temperature up) I would definitely recommend this spot as I could put their bbq sauce on everything. People have varying opinions about what constitutes "good" barbecue, depending on where you're from. Overall, it's very good for the area, and far better than Wood Ranch, which I feel is overrated and overpriced, however alluring the smell may be. I've have Ranch Hand on several occasions, the first when my job ordered catering. I was very surprised how tender the trip tip was. I then had it a few more times and even ordered food for take away. First, the trip tip is flavourful and extremely tender. Not over salted. You can choose between barbecue sauces, their spicy sauce has a hint of zing but not very spicy. Their mild sauce is just the right amount of smokiness and sweetness. I hate when sauce is too sweet and also when things are drenched in sauce so much that you can barely taste the meat. I love putting the trip on the soft garlic dinner rolls, great little sandwich. Their brisket was also excellent, not tough at all. The coleslaw is good, about what you'd expect from a typical cole slaw, but it's not dripping in sauce, or soggy. Sweet potato fries are also very good and the portions are reasonable. I've also had their salad with brisket- great price and good portion size. Great for lunch and when you're trying to be 'good', but also want something tasty and not having to spend $20 on lunch. I've only ordered and been in person once, but the service is decent, and my order was ready very quickly. I will be ordering from here again. I usually enjoy Ranch Hand and almost always order the same thing--a tri-tip sandwich. This time, I ordered the sandwich along with buffalo wings and fries. I asked for extra BBQ sauce and hot BBQ sauce, and although the person at the counter assured me they were included, they were missing from my order. When I opened the wings, I realized I was also shorted two wings. I didn't want to spend over 20 minutes driving back, so I called the restaurant to let them know. The person who answered didn't seem surprised and even said, "Let me guess--two wings short?" as if this were a common issue. He then said it wasn't his fault and blamed the kitchen staff. There was no offer of a refund, replacement, or credit for a future order--just a defensive response. Overall, it was very poor customer service and disappointing compared to past experiences. The staff were really nice! I told them it was my first visit, and they offered small samples of my 2 choices. I chose tri-tip based on the sample that was sliced thin and tender. The sandwich came with ample tri-tip, but it was sliced WAY to thick. Too tough to eat in a sandwich. You couldn't bite through it without the whole slice coming out. How could a BBQ place not know how to slice Tri-tip? There's a nice patio for dining and they bring out a basket with different sauces and seasonings.
