I ordered the Tomato Bruschetta app and it came to the table with three pieces of crostini w/ dried fig jam, a whole ball of mozzarella covered by three thin slices of deli prosciutto. Nothing like what I thought I'd ordered. For my entre I ordered their Chicken Napoleon. Something that resembled a deep fried spatchcocked chicken breast that the meat was removed from the ribs and cheeses added on top and placed in a salamander for way to long. Not good. Others had steaks overcooked and undersized. Two out of five meals fared better. Will not return. The décor was a bit of a shambles as well. read more

I ordered the Antarctic Salmon and mac'n cheese, and my oh my they are both incredibly delicious and a joy to eat. All dishes are just perfect. The salmon was cooked perfect and seasoned to perfection. The papas bravas are crispy and packed with flavor. The mac'n cheese is among the best, if not the best, I have had. Amazing! Another good find of Cincinnati Restaurant Week. First Course: Argentine Shrimp Toast. Ah-mazing. The chimichurri butter was the winning touch. So. Much. Flavor. Second Course: Slide Tomato Salad. Super refreshing ñ, light plate. I don't know where you get tomatoes like these. Best tomatoes hands down. Third Course: Egg plant milanesa. Table bread was bland, cold and hard. Drink/wine menu left much to be desired. Mushroom/onion side was the most flavorful item I had. I'm from out of town and I typically hate coming in so late and at the point we realized we were already seated. The hostess and server were so incredibly kind and at no point did we feel rushed, though we did try to hurry up for them. The chopped Cobb salad is nice with the crisped prosciutto and good quality blue cheese. The leaves/dressing were just a tad wet but they nicely split the portion onto two plates without us asking. We ordered the sausage platter which my boyfriend liked, I loved my skirt steak (perfect med rare and super tender, even got some char on it), the fries are !!so good!! Fried in beef tallow, and I loved the gnocchi but could go without the spinach. A great place to eat that's about half the price of the steakhouse down the block. They do offer empanadas (if you sit at the bar, they're $2 all day). They have a great selection of spirits, including some high end gins. The empanadas are delicious, if you've ever had any empanadas from any of Alfio's restaurants you know how great they are! The menu has some things that sounded delicious. My friend and I typically find ourselves using our Aronoff tickets on the Thursday evenings that we both have off. On one of these nights before a show, we tried Butcher and Barrel for the first time. after having our first bite of our entrees, we vowed we would be back! Laurie has been our server each time that we've dined here. She's very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu, so feel free to ask her any questions to make sure that you have a positive dining experience. The pastas are made in house and use old Italian recipes, I highly recommend them! My two favorites are the gnocchi with short rib and the cannellonis. Both offer phenomenal flavor, and I can't rave about either dish enough. My go-to sides are the brussel sprouts with bacon and mashed potatoes (load them up with truffle and gorgonzola, trust me on this). The grilled Caesar salad is a solid offering as well. They have half off bottles of wine on Thursdays with some decent options for white wine and red wine lovers alike. I was excited to receive a food deck for Christmas this year which has a Butcher and Barrel coupon in it... As if I need an excuse to come back here! Staff bent backwards to arrange seating that was best for my husbands back problems. We went on my birthday and we couldn't have picked a better place to celebrate. My husband and I came to Butcher And Barrel to celebrate Valentine's Day. Note: we came on the Saturday before, not on the actual holiday. The restaurant was pretty empty when we arrived, which was surprising for 6:30 on a Saturday. The hostesses were friendly and seated us right away. We sat at a small table with two big, comfy lounge-style chairs! The table also had a lamp on it, which I loved! We ordered the mac and cheese, Brussels sprouts, short ribs, and the filet. Everything was good. My favorite was the Brussels sprouts and the filet. I probably wouldn't order the mac and cheese again. For dessert, we ordered the chocolate mousse. We enjoyed it! Unfortunately, the service was not as great. Our server proved to be forgetful. We asked for the filet with no goat cheese, and it came out with goat cheese. No big deal, just scraped it off. Once our food arrived, she said she would bring us plates. Five minutes later, the plates still hadn't come. Our server came back and said "how is everything tasting?" We hadn't tasted anything, because we didn't have any plates! Haha. I asked for the plates, and she apologized and brought them. Last complaint, which isn't really a "service" complaint: we ordered our steak medium, but it came rare. I can handle medium-rare, but the steak was literally raw on the inside. I've never sent food back, but I can't eat raw meat. Our server was understanding and had it replaced. Our new steak was still undercooked, definitely medium-rare, but we happily ate it, and it was very good. Overall, we enjoyed Butcher and Barrel, but we weren't blown away. The food was good, but very expensive. Again, I wasn't blown away, so I'm not sure that it was worth it, especially given our so-so experience. read more

Fancy yet a casual cozy setting. I loved the interiors with exposed stone, leather seats..just add a side of steak and whiskey and I could picture Ron Swanson sitting at one of the booths. Drinks were delicious, I particularly liked the Zesty mule which was very fragrant and refreshing. For my entree' I got the gnocchi with braised short rib. Now I generally don't like beef in my pasta but this short rib was so flavorful and falling right off the bone. Gnocchi was made in house, bigger than the usual but not overly dense. The cream sauce was the highlight for me with shiitake mushrooms & truffle, I just wish there was more of it. One of my friend got the special tomahawk & it was right out of a Flintstone episode. Prolly for a Neanderthal. Overall, service was great, prices are a bit steep esp for the portion but it's a great place for once in a while indulgent affair. read more

It wasn't so much that it was expensive but that it didn't quite live up to the value. If you do decide to get any one type of meat, go with the blood sausage, it was so awesome. Great vibe and fun place for a get together or date downtown. Came for dinner and didn't realize it was small plates. Thankfully our server explained it to us so we ordered a few items off the menu: Brussel sprouts, wild boar egg rolls, short rib gnocchi, and osso buco. Between two of us, it wasn't enough food. Probably needed one or two more plates. Total cost was $45 which is about half of what we usually pay at Alfios so the price isn't too expensive for the quality of food and great service. If you like the short rib ravioli at Alfio's the short rib gnocchi is your go to. Not exactly the same but the similarities are there. Makes sense that this joint is part of the same group. The decor is really trendy and cozy. Our favorite was the friendly service. Go out and have some fun. They have a full bar and lots of options on tap. If I need to host a group outing this place has a room in the back that would be perfect! One star off because I wish they offered bread or something for us to slop up the sauces from our dishes. The empanadas were excellent, and my wife and I both loved the green dipping sauce (not sure what it's called). I got the Nianesa Napolitana, which was so much better than I expected. My wife got the Gnocchi with Short Rib, which she loved. We also tried a few of the sides. The Brussel Sprouts and Roasted Veggies were a huge hit. The Mashed Potatoes were good, but not a great combo with the dinners we ordered. One thing - We started to order the Steak Dinner for two, but then the waitress explained that it was a single steak and salad. Huh? 5 star experience here during restaurant week! Server was friendly and knowledgeable, able to make a reservation on open table for the evening. Ambiance of the place is rustic outdoorsy, and cozy. Got some delicious bread with garlic herb butter, I definitely asked for another basket. 3 course meal for $36. Ordered the crab cake empanada for appetizer and it was yummy. The lamb shank main entree with truffled potatoes and mushrooms was divine and had enough to feed me the next night too! I got the bread pudding which was good, but my main regret was not ordering the cheesecake like my friend did. That cheesecake blew my mind, so delicious and sweet and decadent and amazing! Treated myself to the strawberry mule, and if I didn't have work the next day I would've considered a second.
