A few days before the birth of our first child, one of my oldest friends came down from Brooklyn for what we understood would be my final properly indulgent night before parenthood. We have known each other since we were five, lived together in New York for six years, and stayed close through marriages, children, and jobs that occasionally made us question our sanity. He has seen me at my absolute best and worst, and he was also the person who helped me get fit and regain some discipline while we worked in finance and used excess to numb the misery of those jobs. Choosing Butcher & Singer gave the evening exactly the ceremonial weight it deserved. Steakhouses take on different meanings as you move through life. In your early twenties, an expense account dinner feels like the dream: free drinks and an extravagant meal while you are broke, eating ramen, and sitting at the bottom of the professional food chain. By your early thirties, after enough wining and dining in Midtown Manhattan, the ritual can feel exhausted, and another steakhouse dinner holds little appeal. In your early forties, with young children and fewer unstructured nights, catching up with a lifelong best friend over a great steak feels incredibly meaningful, partly because neither the dinner nor the friendship needs to become a weekly habit. That contrast was especially fitting because my friend is remarkably health-conscious and frugal despite being tremendously successful. He seldom strays from his disciplined diet, while I have historically been much more willing to wander toward fries, dessert, and whatever reckless topping appears on the menu. A traditional steakhouse lets both people leave satisfied: one can order a lean steak and vegetables, while the other can treat the table as permission to suspend judgment for two hours. We shared the same celebratory dinner, but our plates still reflected exactly who each of us had always been. Inside, Butcher & Singer delivers the classic steakhouse fantasy with extraordinary conviction. The soaring ceiling, monumental columns, and amber lighting give the dining room a glamorous scale, while the dark wood, painted murals, and small shaded lamps keep all that grandeur from becoming severe. This is where Stephen Starr's judgment becomes especially apparent, because both Butcher & Singer and nearby Barclay Prime depend on concepts that could age badly: one could become stuffy and antiquated, while the other could become glossy and artificial. Instead, Butcher & Singer still feels transportive, Barclay Prime remains contemporary and cool, and each succeeds because the design, service, and atmosphere are executed with total confidence. Our meal included what I believe was a Caesar salad, filet mignon, asparagus, fries, and a rich chocolate fudge cake. I added a blue cheese garnish to my steak, a completely unnecessary flourish that became the crown jewel on an already excellent piece of meat, while my friend kept his side of the table considerably cleaner. Parc creates a useful third point in Starr's small Rittenhouse constellation: its bar steak and burger offer a more casual form of red meat, somewhere between an ordinary dinner and the full ceremony of Butcher & Singer or Barclay Prime. I appreciate both, but a burger leaves me feeling heavier, while a properly cooked lean steak can feel filling and indulgent without ruining the rest of the night. Only one detail could have improved our experience. We sat at a small table near the host stand and the clock, which was comfortable and entirely reasonable for a table for two, but it left us slightly outside the dramatic center of the room. This was no one's fault, merely the kind of learned preference that comes from seeing the full room afterward and knowing where I would request to sit on a future visit. I hope to return when the budget allows, settle farther inside among the leather booths, glowing lamps, and sweep of the murals, and once again let Butcher & Singer make a rare night with an old friend feel worthy of savoring. read more

This place is stunning on the inside and I absolutely love the lore of all the movies that have been filmed inside and the various businesses that the building housed before the restaurant. With that, the food was good and it didn't feel just like your typical steakhouse and I attribute that to the service and how wonderful the staff was. We ordered the oysters, onion soup, delmanico steak, porter house, and the fillet. The table shared the hash brown which was absolutely delicious and by far one of the best items I've had at a steakhouse potato wise. We also ordered the asparagus and the seasonal corn dish. Arrived late at 10pm on a Friday without a reservation. The place was PACKED! Went to bar and waited 15 minutes for a seat. That's good. Be aware the bar is small. Ordered bone in filet with mashed potatoes and roasted Brussels sprouts. It was a little slow to receive (they were busy!) about 40 minutes. Steak was cooked perfectly sprouts were just right but the best part were the potatoes. Unbelievable taste! Crispy exterior with soft inside. Four us came for dinner in a Saturday night. We came about a half an hour early so we could sit at the bar. Robbie was our bartender. He took great care of us. And he made the perfect dirty martini. I started with a Caesar salad with no croutons, but added garbanzo beans. I asked for the anchovies but they were not the white kind I like. Then I got the filet mignon medium rare. We ordered a lot of sides including the stuffed hashbrowns, which is their signature side. OMG it was delicious!! Perfectly crunchy on the outside and potato-y on the inside. We also ordered the broccolini, the mushrooms and onions and the mac & cheese. Service ok. Water constantly refilled. But wine and all drinks were backed up. They did ultimately comp a round of wine since the wait was so long. We could have drank more!! For starters we had the complimentary made in house biscuits with honey butter. Arguably one of, if not the best, complimentary breads I have ever had. Best way to describe it is grands flaky layers but turned up to a thousand. They're made in house by a lady who makes all of their desserts and has since the restaurant opened their doors. We also tried to wedge which was plenty big enough for two people to split. It was very good and the first time I have had a wedge with Russian dressing however, that could be a Philly thing. The steaks were flavorful, moist and cooked to perfection. The crust on the steak was perfect and did not contain too much gristle. For sides we had mashed potatoes and mac 'n' cheese. The mac 'n' cheese was good but not top 3 or 5 mac 'n' cheese in my experiences. However, the mashed potatoes were great! Have that homemade, buttery taste that pairs great with the steak and one of their side sauces. For dessert we had the Lemon Ice Box Pie. It was very good as well. Not too tart or too sweet. Butcher and Singer is a steakhouse, and in Steven Starr's thematic approach, has a kind of Mad-Men-era vibe. (Starr is famously a concert promoter-turned-restauranteur, which is often credited for his curated collection of foodie experiences.) There is a fascinating collection of Manhattans on the cocktail menu, and I found it interesting that there are no martinis featured on the menu in the way that the Manhattans are. I was sorely tempted to try the Robber Baron, which would be a Rob Roy by most definitions. I ordered a NY Strip, which is a cut I almost never cook at home, but often find on the menu in steakhouses. It's a leaner, grainier, beefier cut than the fan-favorite ribeye, but I make ribeye at home all the time. One thing I'll say about Butcher and Singer's take, and it reminded me immediately of the specimen my son, who attends a local technical high school's culinary arts program, brought home from class one memorable day: the cut was of the bone-in variety, and this made the experience of eating it completely different from the thinner boneless version I've usually enjoyed. I prefer the bone-in version hands down. The kitschy, throwback-to-bygone-era vibe even includes Baked Alaska as a dessert option. It's hard to pass up; like the Lobster Thermidor at the Knife and Fork in Atlantic City, it's one of the few (if only) places I go that has it on the menu. After being in Philly for sometime (temporarily), we finally made it to the storied Butcher and Singer. The restaurant had been a bank and a stock brokerage before it became a restaurant. Stephen Starr renovated and reopened it in 2004. Its cavernous interior looks like it had been a bank - the overly dark atmosphere isn't my favorite. I'm not sure why they keep the lighting so low - it's not inviting at all - even with the bold design. Enough of that - let's talk food! First up - the biscuits. Light, fluffy and delicious, they were as good as any I've had - what a great starter! Next, The Wedge - I don't eat blue cheese often, but tonight was the exception. It's rich, creamy, but bold and pungent flavor is something I can only have once in a while. The salad was very good with LOTS of blue cheese chunks and dressing - a little too much. See picture - a thick layer underneath the bacon bits was slightly overwhelming. It could have come with twice as much lettuce - don't get me wrong - the dressing was fabulously decadent - but sometimes 'less is more'. We then ordered the crab cake - who expects to get a first class crab cake at a steakhouse - I wasn't. But it was - I spent 25 years in MD, so I have to admit I'm a crab aficionado. The lump crab with hardly any filling was excellent! Next, the stars of the evening - the steaks. I'm old fashioned - I like my steaks medium to medium well - pink throughout. I typically order filets - but after Delmonico's (NYC), Barclay Prime (Phil.) and Ruth's Chris (DC) all served undercooked versions, I was hesitant to order a filet. After a brief discussion with our server at Butcher (he said the filet would have to be 'butterflied' for medium well), I opted for the sirloin, which is MUCH easier to cook medium/medium well....and they executed perfectly! It was so juicy with an excellent texture and a rich peppery flavor. I decided immediately, no more filets - I was glad I converted. My partner however, resisted and ordered the filet mignon. It wasn't medium well as she had ordered - it was well done - and dry as a result. I want to point out, this is not a criticism of Butcher - but the realization you can't order a filet 'medium well'.....anywhere. From now on - we both order sirloins. The reviews of the stuffed hash browns on Yelp were so good, we HAD to order them - even though our go to potatoes with steak has always been mashed - not this time!! My friend works in food & beverage in a higher position, and she commented on his inappropriate and condescending behavior as well. Luckily, after we were seated, we did not see him again. What a beautiful restaurant! We started at the cozy bar and had a round of drinks & appetizers. Wonderful espresso martinis - they're definitely on the sweeter side, which I loved! They gave use buttermilk biscuits and we had the escargot & crab cake to begin. The escargot were pretty good, but fairly bland. The crab cake was well worth it! The bartender was lovely. After we got to the table we had another round of drinks before ordering our meal. They have you order all at once and course it out for you, which makes sense but does make it hard if you aren't sure how hungry you'll be. We had the Caesar salad & wedge salad to start. For the main, we had a NY strip & 8 oz filet. Both were cooked perfectly, but the strip was rather tough to chew. Sides are shareable, so we had the Mac & cheese, brussel sprouts, & stuffed hashbrown. All were good. For dessert, we shared the creme brulee. It was a classic vanilla with fruit. Only downside was that when our food was boxed up for us, we were not given our filet and instead some else's entree. Not only one of the best steakhouses I've ever been to, but one of the best meals I've ever had! We had reservations at 5:30 on a Sunday. We took an Uber from Jersey and were running a little behind due to some street closures. The staff was very understanding and forgiving. We met our friend who was waiting for us at the bar when we arrived. As we were getting shown to our table, the bartender made it a point to wish us an enjoyable night which was very nice. I started with a very good stout from Great Lakes Brewing Company and my fiancé had one of her go-to cocktails, a Dirty Martini with Stoli Elit, which she loved. Freshly baked, flakey, and served with delicious honey butter. After much admiration of the building and decor, we were able to look over the menu and come to a consensus on some sides and appetizers. We started with the Butcher Salad, which is their version of a chopped salad. Vibrant colors, popping with flavor, my fiancé and I split it and really enjoyed our decision. We then had Oysters Rockefeller and Steak Tartare. Both appetizers were a hit with the table. It was my fiancés first time having both Oysters Rockefeller (she's a fan of oysters on the half shell) and steak tartare (she's also a fan of beef carpaccio) and loved both. The steak tartare was salty, savory, velvety, and very tender. A few orders of it and I could have made a meal out of it alone. For dinner we all chose steaks, my friend a NY Strip cooked medium rare, my fiancé a filet cooked medium, and for myself a 22oz porterhouse cooked medium rare. Consensus was that both the crust on the steaks and the temperature to which they were cooked was perfection. The steaks were seasoned to our liking. They were tender, and the fat on the NY strips melted in your mouth. For sides we split the Stuffed Hash Browns and Roasted Brussels. I knew from the moment I looked through Yelp pictures weeks prior to our reservation that I needed to have the Stuffed Hash Browns. Even with the bar being set so high, they exceeded expectations. These are a MUST ORDER for your dinner party. The outside of the Hash Browns were so crispy and the insides of the hash browns were stuffed with what I believe was cheese, sour cream, and onions. It was plenty to split between three of us. If I had to nitpick one thing about our dinner it would have been that the Brussels weren't crispy. I like a good char on my roasted Brussels sprouts, but they were still very delicious so I am in no way complaining. I did finish up my night with a Bombay Sapphire Martini with a twist since I wasn't driving. We chose to skip out on dessert since we were all so full. We didn't feel rushed once and our server was very nice. Each time one of us got up to use the restroom, our server would re-fold our napkin at our place setting for when we'd get back. One of many great steakhouses in Philadelphia, Butcher & Singer is housed in a space that used to be a bank. Not the crappy little pop up kiosks type ATM banks of today. Rather, this was obvious prior powerhouse building with soaring ceilings, marble and cement, and a huge vault. The lighting is low, there are perimeter semi private booths, and decor sporting nontoxic masculinity which all seem appropriate in this space serving up the classics. A great steak is perhaps my favorite food genre and this was my first time here. I pledge it will not be my last and I would put this in my top 10 great steakhouses I have visited. You will need to save up to eat here, take out a loan, or be a guest of someone with an expense account because it is not cheap. But it is also not the most expensive I have seen either. Some things on the menu were inappropriately high in my opinion but others seemed reasonable. Examples of this include a corkage fee of $40 (my experience in most place is that it is $30 but some have been as high as $50), a house craft Manhattan cocktail is $30 (I have seen craft ones as low as $18 and as high as $32), and an aged Delmonico (Ribeye) steak is $67 (I have seen dry aged ones usually in the $79 range). Nothing was cheap but it was also not the most expensive pricing I have run into. What do you get for these prices? All you would expect from a classic high-end steak house. There were great, straightforward menu items that were perfectly executed. Highlights of our evening were the escargot, the fresh oysters, the Butcher Salad (their version of a chopped garbage salad), the steaks, and the Icebox Lemon Pie. They also have an epic wine list if you are an oenophile but be forewarned, there are very limited selections that are affordable. Expect a 300-500% markup (even more for collector vintage bottles) so although their corkage fee is a bit higher than most I have run into, it is still a good way to maintain some value if you have great wine to bring in of your own. Parking is tough all over city center Philly so find a public garage and walk. Expect service to be professional and friendly but not over the top doting on you. And you would be most comfortable dressing towards up, not down (you will be fine in a collared shirt and jeans or better but I would avoid the shorts and flip flops). Service was wonderful. Setting was beautiful, a tad loud with how busy it is and the high ceilings. Dirty martini was perfect. Cream spinach and mash potatoes were delicious. I'd order that creamed spinach a thousand times over. The side portions were bigger than it seemed in pictures (a good 3+ servings). The steaks were like... crusted. I would say pepper was a main ingredient in their rubs. Both the filet mignon and NY strip had it. I was kind of shocked that it wasn't mentioned in the menu. It made me even more grateful I added a side of Béarnaise. HIGHLY RECOMMEND the turtle cheesecake desert. Even just get it to go. I had 3-4 servings from how large the slice was. Looking for an elevated dining experience in Philly? Look no further than Butcher and Singer, arguably one of the most beautiful restaurants in the city from a structural and architectural standpoint, there's a reason it's been on just about every "best of" list. I had my first experience over the weekend for a special night out with one of my girlfriends, and was really impressed from start to finish. I screwed up and forgot to book a reservation, but we decided to just show up and try our luck at the bar. This worked in our favor as we got to enjoy the full Butcher and Singer experience from a table in their cocktail lounge space, which is full service and was actually completely open when we walked in on a Friday night at 6:56pm. These unreserved tables filled in quite quickly, and the only hiccup of the night was trying to get a server over to us after we grabbed our seats. I went back up to the host stand after we waited for about 10 minutes, then after that point we waited awhile longer for someone to come over with a menu. Not enough to dock a star, but I found it surprising for a place that should seemingly have very clear and polished FOH systems in place. After this though: pure perfection. We each ordered a French 75 from our server Ricky who was a complete rockstar all night long. He gave great suggestions and was super attentive for our whole meal. We then put in our order (we were splitting everything) which one could essentially title "The basic bitch's guide to ordering dinner at a steakhouse" + Caesar salad + NY strip steak + Creamed spinach + Mashed potatoes + Glasses of Côtes du Rhône and Chianti Everything really was perfectly executed, presented, and priced for the quality. You are not going to have a cheap night but you will leave FULL, tipsy, and happy. This amount of food was too much for two people, but I regret nothing and wish I could have tried one of their many tasty desserts. I will absolutely be back, even just to the bar before a night out to take in the gorgeous space and feel transported away from 15th street for a brief moment. I took myself to dinner when I got a promotion I've be vying for over and year. I thought celebrating here would be perfect. To my dismay it was a horrible experience. I have yet to get a message from management. The ambiance was too dark too. I doubt I'd return after the food was overcooked. Then the manager said it was normal until my order came out again he say oh this look right so why did you say the overcooked lobster tails was acceptable. You made me feel like uncomfortable with making the complaint as if it was my fault. read more

One of my all time favorite resturaunts! I have been coming here with my family since I was a little girl and have been in love with it's experience ever since. The room is lightly glowed by a collection of dimmed candles throughout the resturaunts. It provides such a comforting mood, and if you are a dog person you would love their artwork they portray. The food is amazing I always get the filet mignon and mac and cheese and they always bring an amazingly delicious meal. The service is always amazing there not once have I had a bad waiter or bad experience. One time as a kid I ordered the wrong thing they sent it back! Such an amazing place to go and get your moneys worth for a nice dinner. Love it so much I will be back always:) read more
