Inside was very nostalgic of old restaurants from my childhood in South Carolina. It feels like you're stepping back in time, but in an authentic way. The gentleman taking orders could tell we were new to the restaurant and was both helpful and patient with us. We ended up choosing a Philly with bacon, buffalo chicken Philly, and chili cheese dog. Everything was delicious. I wish the chicken on the Philly would have been more crispy, but they make their sauce in house and it was delicious. I was very surprised at how soft the bread was and that it still held up all the toppings. The friends were great and old fashioned. The star of the show might have been the chili cheese dog. When I saw it, I thought we made a mistake. It looked a mess for real. But it was a mess in the best way. It surprised us both and was so tasty. They use slice cheese and a thick chili. I'm kinda glad this is far because I'd be here all the time. We definitely plan to go back and try more menu items.

Tonight I ordered the Blue Plate Special with hamburger steak smothered in grilled onions, collard greens, green beans, cornbread, and a big bowl of Brunswick stew. My unsweet tea stayed filled thanks to Rhonda, who was serving tables while also managing the restaurant. We learned that Hot Rod's started the evening with three servers scheduled. Business was slow, so one server was sent home. Naturally, that's when things picked up. Even so, Rhonda and the remaining server kept everything moving smoothly, and we never felt neglected during our visit. The Brunswick stew was excellent and gave us an unexpected opportunity for comparison. Earlier in the day we had Brunswick stew at Fresh Air Bar-B-Que. Hot Rod's version was chunkier, with larger pieces of meat, more noticeable vegetables, and a slight kick of spice. The Fresh Air version was smoother and more finely blended. Both were excellent, but they were definitely different styles. The hamburger steak was flavorful, the green beans and collard greens tasted like proper Southern vegetables, and when the Texas Pete hit the table there was only one thing to say: "My man, Texas Pete goes on the collards." Then came the surprise ending. We learned that peach cobbler was half price today. Unfortunately, they were out. Or so we thought. A fresh cobbler was still in the oven. For the next several minutes, the suspense reached maximum peach. Finally, the cobbler emerged from the kitchen and was served à la mode. The French gave it a classy name. The South perfected the application. Warm peaches, a buttery cobbler topping, and a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream that immediately melted with a purpose made for the perfect ending to the meal. It was absolutely worth the wait. Hot Rod's continues to be one of our favorite stops in Social Circle, and after another great meal, I have no doubt we'll be back again the next time we're in town. I knew I had to stop at Cowboy's BBQ after I passed it a few times while looking at houses in Covington. Some of the best food that you'll find anywhere is often attached to a gas station. The good reviews and smells made me certain this was going to be great. At first glance, prices are amazing [more on this later...]. I ordered the 3 meat plate with brisket, ribs, and smoked chicken. I chose fries and mac n cheese for my sides. The mac n cheese carried an upcharge, but this is reasonably common for places to do. I agree with the one diner who said the brisket was amazing. I really enjoyed the brisket. The fries were also fine thanks how are you? Wish I had more good to say about this place. The ribs were very old and mediocre at best. I understand that food can't be cooked to order at a barbecue place, but even barbecue has a shelf life. The ribs that I was served should've long been chopped into a stew special or something along those lines. The smoked chicken was a disgusting insult. At first, I thought I was mistakenly served an additional side instead of smoked chicken. Unfortunately, their service style is off the bone and finely diced. Storing barbecue meats off the bone is a delicate process. You have to take extra care to ensure that it doesn't dry up in the hot box. Unfortunately, no care was taken, so the chicken was dry and tasteless. The mac n cheese was very low quality. I'll happily pay an upcharge for the good stuff that's baked. I'll grudgingly eat Kraft mac n cheese. I will not pay an upcharge for Kraft mac n cheese. Honestly, all of this would've made the experience probably worth 2 or even 3 stars, but they have an incredibly dishonest, unadvertised upcharge for credit cards. The surcharge is definitely higher than their cost to accept credit cards. Some businesses eat the cost of accepting credit cards. Other businesses pass this cost to the customer. Cowboy BBQ uses this as an opportunity to improve their margins by cheating their customers.
