Every time we visit my cousin in Social Circle, Georgia, one stop is practically guaranteed: Hot Rod's Diner. We've eaten here enough times that it feels less like a restaurant visit and more like part of the tradition. Tonight I ordered the Blue Plate Special with hamburger steak smothered in grilled onions, collard greens, green beans, cornbread, and a big bowl of Brunswick stew. My unsweet tea stayed filled thanks to Rhonda, who was serving tables while also managing the restaurant. We learned that Hot Rod's started the evening with three servers scheduled. Business was slow, so one server was sent home. Naturally, that's when things picked up. Even so, Rhonda and the remaining server kept everything moving smoothly, and we never felt neglected during our visit. The Brunswick stew was excellent and gave us an unexpected opportunity for comparison. Earlier in the day we had Brunswick stew at Fresh Air Bar-B-Que. Hot Rod's version was chunkier, with larger pieces of meat, more noticeable vegetables, and a slight kick of spice. The Fresh Air version was smoother and more finely blended. Both were excellent, but they were definitely different styles. The hamburger steak was flavorful, the green beans and collard greens tasted like proper Southern vegetables, and when the Texas Pete hit the table there was only one thing to say: "My man, Texas Pete goes on the collards." Then came the surprise ending. We learned that peach cobbler was half price today. Unfortunately, they were out. Or so we thought. A fresh cobbler was still in the oven. For the next several minutes, the suspense reached maximum peach. Finally, the cobbler emerged from the kitchen and was served à la mode. The French gave it a classy name. The South perfected the application. Warm peaches, a buttery cobbler topping, and a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream that immediately melted with a purpose made for the perfect ending to the meal. It was absolutely worth the wait. Hot Rod's continues to be one of our favorite stops in Social Circle, and after another great meal, I have no doubt we'll be back again the next time we're in town. We got a hamburger and the country fried steak. the hamburger was fine but didn't have much flavor and the country fried steak needed salt and pepper. The food took a while to come out but the waitress did apologize for the wait and it was busy so I understand. the jalapeño hushpuppies were really good though! Got there around 4 pm on a Friday. Got seated immediately in a booth. Plenty of open tables. Place appeared clean in its 50/60 era atmosphere. Waitress was very friendly and polite. My only complaint is it's a bit pricey on some items. I.e., a hot dog 1/4 lb without toppings is $9.64. Add on chili, slaw and onions, you are looking at $11.00, but that includes fries. We used to love this place and made the hour drive to eat here at least monthly. Now they've become victims of their own success. The food is still good, the wait staff still efficient, but the kitchen simply unable to keep up with orders. Today we came down for lunch and were seated at 12:45. The restaurant was busy but not packed with people waiting to be seated. We ordered a chicken salad sandwich and a turkey sandwich. We received our food at 1:35. It took the kitchen almost an hour to prepare 2 sandwiches. My advice- hire kitchen help, or have the staff inform customers when they place an order that there will be an hour wait for their food to arrive. I think we'll take a break from coming back for a while. read more

Really liked this place. Reminds me of a place back in Pennsylvania called Nifty Fifties. It was packed, so we sat at the counter. Service was attentive and fast. Had lunch with friends and everyone was happy. Two of us had the grilled cheese and onion rings which were awesome. My other friends had the hot dog and cole slaw and a burger & fries. The chocolate malts are legit and delicious. The decor is bright and welcoming with a 50's style and funny quotes and signs all over the place. The service was fast and friendly; everyone working there seemed to be happy and looking after each other's tables. The only suggestion would be a veggie burger and/or hot dog for my vegetarian friends. They do have enough salads and veggies though to keep everyone happy. We'll definitely be back. read more

On our way home coming through Atlanta we found this little gem. We were sat as soon as we walked in by a friendly, smiling host. Our server Sidney was all smiles, friendly and great with recommendations and her service was great! We started with chili cheese tater tots, they were hot and really delicious. I had a cheeseburger with onion rings, both were amazingly good. He had the bacon cheeseburger with Mac and cheese, they were super good. What a jewel in the quaintest little town! It was packed on a Friday night at 6:30 and don't take reservations so we ate at the lunch counter. This is one of my two favorite burger places. Hot Rod's is a 32 mile round trip, the other 46. They both have awesome burgers and great onion rings, my favorite meal. My visit did not disappoint as the service and meal was great as it always has been. This is the kind of place that everyone wishes was in their neighborhood. Other reviewers rave about how great the meat and vegetables are but I just can't get past the burger and rings. I ordered the bacon cheese burger. It was cooked correctly, had all the dressings & a side of fries. My buddy got the patty melt & rings. Both were good.
