This should be the story of the little hardware store that could. We recently bought a place in Sugarloaf and have been working on doing some repairs. We're very used to running down to the local big box store to get what we need. I always try to make a list before coming up. Was working on a project and needed some unexpected items. Went over to the True value butcher block. Wow am I glad I did. This place has a little of everything. Every possible tool, Gidget, and things you didn't even know you needed and they have. I was thoroughly impressed. My confidence level of doing projects now has greatly increased because I know just 10 minutes away is this outstanding hardware store. The people working there were friendly. I didn't have any questions so I didn't have the opportunity to see how helpful they are. They have a great selection of every possible thing you might be working on in your home. I went for a quick trip and was there for almost an hour because I was looking in familiarizing myself with all the amazing things that they had. If you live in the area, I need something to finish a project rest assure this place will have it. It also made me feel great to know I was supporting local businesses. I will be doing more of that and less of my purchases at the big box store before I come up. read more

For a hardware / DIY home improvement store in Big Bear where you aren't going to get a full range of items like you would down the hill, this is one of the more reliable places to go on the mountain. Most of the time you find what what you need. If it's busy it's less fun, but foe the most part you can rely on Butchers Block. read more

I had two keys made two weeks ago and And unfortunately I did not try them out until today and they did not work! The man behind the counter said he would not fix them unless I had the $7 receipt! I have spent a lot of money in that store but I will never go back there again. I guess the economy is so good they can treat customers like that On my way to DIY. read more

AVOID! This is my personal experience and opinion. I've been a Big Bear Lake resident and owner-builder contractor work client and had an account with Butchers for over 25 years. I'm not sure what's going on with this place but between the rude customer service in the accounting office being pressed to squeeze every penny or new owners or just losing money overall because of other businesses in the area (plus Home Depot Delivers) but Butchers is assuming you are getting your bills in " regular snail mail" ( which is also not reliable) and then Butchers charges penalty fees for everything... just not worth it to buy here or have my sub-contractors on my projects buy from here anymore. There are other places in town now that can give good fair prices and not have RUDE greedy SERVICE. Why bother to have an account with them? Too bad, this used to be a nice family place to support... my advice, if you don't want rude, greedy take you for every penny hardware store then GO SOMEWHERE ELSE... it's just not worth it anymore. Really poor customer service would not recommend anyone this place. I told the employee up front on the register I needed some type of plywood and they look at me as if I didn't know what I was talking about. It seems as if no one there wants to work with how rude they are. I believe customer service is to imply your mannerisms and no one implied that here. Instead I got dirty looks and a bad experience. Called less than two weeks ago to inquire about some patio chairs they had previously available. Spoke with a lady named Bonnie and she informer me that they were currently out of this item. She let me know if I wanted to place an order for them as she wasn't sure if they'd be getting anymore. I decided to pass at that moment. Beginning the following week, I receive a phone call from Bonnie letting me know some had arrived and asked if I was still interested. I told her absolutely. On top of that she offered to have them delivered for free that day. Less than a few hours later they were sitting on my front porch. This is a great little local hardware shop. I love the staff here. You get what you pay for their honest and they've been around forever. We've always tried to buy from Butcher's Block because they're a local business but wow was a cashier with the initials MW rude--unbelievably rude. There's no excuse for her behavior. None. Retraining in customer service is needed for her. I hope management pays attention to the negative reviews just as much as they seem to be paying attention to the good ones. Butchers block is a staple of Big Bear. Their staff is knowledgeable and always willing to help. They have a full lumberyard in addition to all of the small items and tools any DIYer or professional we need. Their customer service is hands-down 10 times better than the DIY store. You may feel some of their prices are a bit higher then you would pay at Home Depot or Lowe's, but it's what is expected with the consideration they are on top of a mountain. They are definitely my go to when working on my cabin. read more

Worst service ever. Girls at the front chatting about Snapchat and an old rude lady with the worst customer service ever. I asked for anti freeze and she would not ever stop and look at me. She said next isle over. I had to ask RT or LT. As I was walking out she asked if I found it. I replied I am going somewhere else. Needlessly I left all the item I had in my hand and am going to DYI at least you know what to expect. I live up the mountain and try so hard to shop local. I am over Butcher Block. I've been a BB customer for over 20 years. (RIP Riffenburgh) Every time I realize I need to make a hardware trip I'm filled with dread. Should I support the "mountain owned" business or go to DIY swirls in my head. I've never had a questionable encounter at DIY. At BB on the other hand goes like this- If I'm able to get what I need unassisted or luck out and get some help I'm 40% there. My next worry is if I'll be lucky and get one of the few competent and friendly cashiers. I've actually dropped my wallet to let someone else pass me by in order to get Bonnie. As others have noted she's the tall blonde lady. On my last trip I had the bad luck to get Grizelda (not real name but I'm sure she eats nothing but grizzle). She's nasty, mean, unhelpful, knows little about inventory and defensive. She was more interested badmouthing the "back" and other floor workers, than helping me. When the overlord acknowledged my presence I inquired about cost of different paving stones. She complained "ill have to look it up" and then was annoyed when the pictures I had taken of each item didn't include the barcode. I told her I thought I'd done my part by merely taking the pix so she could identify the item. I also told her there were no prices or barcodes, had there been we wouldn't be having this discussion. She grimaced, shrugged and angrily began flipping pages. As she struggled, Bonnie who had replaced the neighboring cashier, saved the day by passing nasty Grizzelda the answers. Conclusion- *Bonnie rocks and whatever she's paid she deserves more. *it seems the owner of the "mountain business" hasn't addressed the issue. The store is absolutely amazing and the service is outstanding. Whatever you ask for they take time and help out, they go deeply into telling you how to do things, what material to use. You can find all different things even small garden gloves for children. So amazed with this store. It is a real pleasure to go and you go out with a smile and knowing a little bit more each day you go. I can not believe that this is the first review for this Big Bear institution. They have been open for decades serving the area both building trades and general public. The service is fantastic. One example, several years ago I needed a really specific part for a plumbing repair. The employee showed me what they had and said it would work, but I would be better served by picking up a higher quality part at Riffenburgh (no longer in business). The employees generally know what they are doing. In a full service hardware store that is not an easy task as your plumbing guy may have to fill in for the paint guy. The electrical expert may be doing lumber, etc., but they always seem to have the right answers. A few months ago I made the mistake of having several new keys made at another large chain hardware sore. Of the 10 keys, I had to take 7 back and have them re-cut. Of the recuts, I still had 4 bad keys. I just gave up and went to Butcher's. Today I bought a new entry lock and had several keys made (13 extra to be exact) and all worked perfectly. Yes, you can buy low quality junk cheaper on the hill, but don't complain when it does not work or breaks quickly. Patronize the local owned store and you will be happier in the long run. read more

Our kitchen sink had been leaking and I went to Butcher Block to find a Price Pfister cartridge. The gentleman in plumbing took a look at the old cartridge and asked if I checked the seat. This immediately put the job beyond my area of expertise. (Okay, stop laughing.) He told me how to use the Seat Wrench, showed me the kit for replacing the seat and seals, and talked me through it. When I got home, the job went smoothly and quickly and the faucet no longer drips. I know it sounds like a simple job. In fact, now that I've done it, it is simple. But without Butcher Block taking the time to walk me through it, I would have given up and called a plumber (which really isn't in the budget). I've been going to Butcher Block for many years and I always find the help I need. (I should have written a Yelp review many times in the past, in fact.) They're nice people and it feels more like an old style hardware store than a corporation. We live down the hill and only get up to our cabin a few times a year but they treat everyone like old neighbors they've known forever. Good people. read more

I have been making purchases at Butcher's Block for 27 years now and am very glad to have them in town. As a general contractor, I find that their prices are usually better than the big box stores off the mountain. Better yet, I don't have to spend half a day driving off the mountain, loading up, driving back, etc. . . . Butcher's Block happily delivers for free! It's also very nice to do business with a friendly, helpful, local staff that knows me, knows their products, and always offers a pleasant greeting (unlike the new corporate giant DIY where rudeness and lack of knowledge / concern are the rule). I am a big proponent of shopping locally and keeping the local economy strong, and Butcher's Block is a good place to do so! read more

We've been shopping at this store for years due to their selection & great service. Today one gentleman in particular made our day, by going above and beyond with his kindness & excellent customer service !!! We came into Butcher Block today to purchase roof shingles & my husband LUV'D the Husqvarna hat that one of the staff had on! He asked him if they sell them and the young man said he didn't think so, that the company supplied them to team members. Upon checking out up front, my husband asked the cashier if they happened to sell the "Husky" hats & she replied no. We proceeded to check out and a very kind man walked up to my husband as we were about finished, and handed him 2 Husqvarna hats, 1 in blue for him & a pink hat for myself. This gentleman must've heard my husband ask the cashier while in passing and went out of his way for us, with such a kind act of generosity. I wish I would've gotten his name! I had a water pipe leak and so I had to turn off the water to the house. I am not a plumber and I couldn't get a plumber to come to my house for at least a week. I tried a couple of temporary repairs (tape and compound) and they did not not work - it still leaked. That was a waste of $20.00. I took a picture of the leaking pipe and took it to Butcher Block. Rick put together exactly all the parts I needed and he took the time to explain to me how to fix it. It was better than a You Tube video. I did what Rick told me to do and I was able to fix the leaking pipe on my own in about 30 minutes. It is a permanent fix and cost me only $25.00. So glad we have Butcher Block and people like Rick here in Big Bear!! read more

Friendly, helpful staff. They carry some camping basics but not a huge array. Was in town for a couple nights of dispersed camping and needed a few things. They had most of what I needed and a few things I didn't but bought anyway. Always down to support local business.
