Walked in with my family, immediately after entering an older male employee began following us around the store. We grabbed a frisbee to BUY, but we were still browsing and walking around, not ready to check out. The employee who was following us approached us, pointing at one of our younger siblings, stating we needed to pay for that before we walked out with it. We all looked at him confused, saying we were still browsing as we were in the middle of the store, no where near the entrance or registers. After we said that, our mom got involved, loudly repeating what we had originally said. He quickly walked away from us, head down, trying to avoid what he had just done. Needless to say, we didn't give them our business and you shouldn't either. Patrons don't give 1 star reviews for no reason. read more

The manager here is an absolute jerk. No way around it. Older white man with white hair. What a disgusting customer service experience. The initial response from DIY to my comment apologized for the bad experience and gave me a number to speak to someone. Came in on a Sunday afternoon, and they were not that busy. I was looking for a certain product, and went straight to the spot where they usually had it. It wasn't there, so I asked an associate. This associate knew what I was talking about, and helped me look. He couldn't find it either. Then he got on the radio, and the person on the other end of the radio knew exactly where it was. I was able to get my product, pay for it, and then leave. The staff was helpful, the store was clean, and they had what I wanted. What more could you ask for? read more

The store is located in the Vons parking lot, and usually has plenty of parking in their area. The store is neat and tidy and has a decent selection for your DIY needs. There are also seasonal items such as snow and rain gear. The staff is very friendly. The first time I came here, I was put off by the unfriendly older man who kept telling me they didn't sell ANY masks (which they have several different types of, and were located in the aisle right behind him). I guess their disdain for you decreases when they think you're a local? I wish they wouldn't sell sticky traps - those things are so inhumane, such a terrible way to die for any creature that gets caught on them. read more

I believe any bad reviews about the employees are because these people shop at Butcher's Block or are from down the mountain. I am a permanent resident in Big Bear Lake. Our DIY store is a good source for household, automotive, lighting, plumbing needs, etc. The crew and staff have always been helpful when needed, and all appear to be hard-working. However, I do not have a positive opinion of corporate or upper management. For two summers running, it is obvious the A/C is flat out not working. I know that other customers are aware of this and esp. some employees. Corporate apparently thinks a couple of big fans are sufficient. Well, it isn't and can only assume the Company just doesn't want to spend the money. Not acceptable! read more

I was originaly skeptical when DIY opened here in Big Bear., but, NO WORRIES! I have found excellent service from the staff. They all go above and beyond to help. It seemz I am usually looking for some odd piece of hardware or electrical item and the staff takes the time to make sure you can find it, not just tell you, "It's on either aisle 15 or 16. This is a sign of good management! Prices are certainly fair for the mountain community and in many cases you can find differing levels on a product, such as a homeowner who needs a tool for occasional use, perhaps a serious hobbyist or the working professional. read more

It's a handy store, but Jo, the cashier, is very rude and needs customer service training.

I needed my propane tank filled. I went to the back as I always do gate was open and there were other customers getting propane. The older guy that always fills my tank was there. Before I could get inside the gate a staff member Eric came around corner and said you need to go around to the front. I said I always come to the back and then go to front. Eric said its policy. Now it was 85 degrees and I parked my vehicle in parking stall right by gate and carried the propane bottle to the gate opening. I had to turn around and walked to the front of store where I got a cart and rolled back to where I was in the beginning. This ridiculous zero customer service! I shop at DIY regularly I like better than Butcher Block. Not anymore I will go down the hill before I step into DIY. Eric needs to be fired! read more

It's a shame that the people that run/ work here have such poor attitudes. There is a general air of disgust for people who don't live on the mountain. The 10 employees standing around talking to each other act so put out if you ask where something is located. I vowed not to go back there after my last visit. Shopping during a holiday weekend means high crowds and heightened nerves. The staff at DIY were adeptly handling the increased volumes of shoppers out and about purchasing necessities. The parking lot was a riot of people driving in a hurry and forgetting that snow and ice often make for hazardous situations. Over the last 12 years we have been here countless times. Most times we get a helpful, courteous staff member. Once in a while we will get somebody who treats us with indifference. (9-1) We've bought Plants, flowers, keys, pest control solutions, hardware, fireplace hardware, lighting fixtures, bulbs, paint, kitchen supplies, yard work tools, bird food, bird feeders, mulch, plumbing supplies, cleaning supplies, more bedding flowers, more tools, more essentials for home repair and NEVER a visit without buying a Grizzly Newspaper. I really love looking at their pretty rainbow wooden utensils. I go by and admire them every time. I've never bought myself one, though. I guess I figure I have too much of that stuff. I also admire all of their different iron skillets and cookware, so many unique styles. I LOVE their bedding flowers when in season too, always a great display. We were in last week looking for something they were temporarily out of, (an aerosol can air-sprayer for cleaning), but 3 people came to help us look. It was eventually decided they were out of stock but we didn't leave without them referring us to where we will find it. And we did! we took it home, sprayed the dust from our upstairs wall heater's pilot light area and BINGO, it lit. I didn't leave without my Grizzy Paper. I like this store! Businesses on the hill are allowed to run out of things from time to time. I had my pup June Bug with me. She's young and squirrely, but everyone was so nice to her. See you all again next week when something else goes wrong.... Oooo, I forget to mention I love that the parking lot has piped in Country Western music in the lighting fixtures. I went there recently to buy drywall and a wood board, my son was with me and was disappointed to find out those wood kits were longer available. He is 13 years old and was looking forward to the revolver and shotgun kits specifically. Besides that everything was good and nothing was overpriced! Stressful day needing paint at the last minute. I went in for 3 gallons of paint. The manager said "my paint guy called in," shrugged, and said "but maybe Carlos can help you?" You could tell he wasn't sure of his own employees. At the time Carlos was helping another customer, but when I was next he gave me 100% of his attention. Not only did Carlos help me, it wasn't his expertise! He lead me through the process and made me feel comfortable with what I was purchasing. Amazing service! They have a store cat that sits in the paint department and is fond of Carlos. Cats must know good people because Carlos was awesome with customer service and cats. Lol! Manager was overseeing concrete work on the outside garden area. The door was open so I assumed I could walk past the work and retrieve the item I needed. Manager yelled at me to go around to the front. Would have been just as easy to say please and not yell. Or better yet post a sign stating same. I've always had good experiences at DIY. If you like kitchen gadgets, they have a section with gizmos and contraptions you didn't know you needed. Whether it be a special garlic press, mini silicone spatula, mini whisk or cast iron vessels and accessories. I've found hard to find plumbing fittings that saved the day. Some have mentioned disappointing customer service, which hasn't been my experience. People have said I should shop at the other place to keep money on the mountain. Well I did for years, but not anymore. I can't patronize a business that consistently gives terrible customer service on the mountain or not. DIY is well lit, the aisles are well spaced and the store consistently looks organized. Unlike the other place where I get a headache searching dark shelves and crammed aisles, have a hard time finding help and then the final reward of waiting in line for the unhappy cashiers to check me out. Don't buy anythjng from this place. Worse customer service, we were stuck in a storm while in Big Bear and bought a pair of snow chains, in case we needed them. Luckily when we got home didn't need them. Drove back to Big Bear the following weekend to return them and was told NO you can't return due to a State law. The box was never opened but still no. The guy told me to sell them on Amazon. Even asked if my kid can used the bathroom, was told it was broken. Hello? Don't you have the tools and material to fix a broken toilet. Thank goodness for this store! I've gone camping in the area and I always forget something at home, but this place is great for getting camping essentials such as, wood, fire starters, outdoor items, indoor items, pet items, and so on. Though this place might have everything you need when you go camping, be aware not everything comes cheap.. most items are pretty pricey so be sure to check other stores around the area for cheaper prices. I was in this Big Bear store recently and was pleased that every customer was wearing a mask (thus following local regulations), in a socially conscious manner to neither contract nor pass on the Coronavirus. The problem was that a few of the ignorant workers had their masks below their noses and the moronic bald guy in paint kept pulling it down to his chin: thus exposing his nose and mouth to me and the rest of the customers and employees. I would hope the management team could do better. read more
