Absolutely yes! We have very high standards when it comes to pineapple buns. We frequent Hong Kong and miss the classic thick butter tucked into a warm flaky pineapple bun. This place does that and takes it up a notch! They have different flavored butter which was very interesting but it absolutely works! We got the sampler and we devoured all four. Also picked up 8 classics and they were all very good. The bun is light and airy but has a good buttered undertone. Pineapple King is one of my top eats during our San Francisco trip. I've had bolo pineapple buns countless times in LA and even in Hong Kong, but never quite like this. It was absolutely heavenly. The standout was the bolo bun with guava butter. Imagine guava jam and butter had a delicious baby and being tucked inside a warm, soft pineapple bun and that's exactly what it tasted like. We also tried the classic butter bun, which was excellent, but the guava version was the winner for us. For something savory, we ordered the salted egg yolk and BBQ pork bun, and it was delicious. The combination of sweet, salty, and savory flavors worked really well together. We also tried the pandan bun, which was fine, but it didn't quite stand out compared to the other flavors. The first time I came here, I was underwhelmed. It seemed like another overrated joint (one of so many, am I right?). Yelpess with the mostess Cherylynn was spot on when she said the buns need to be warm & eaten asap. This is key to experiencing a stellar treat over a humdrum one. On our 2nd visit they were hot. They were pillowy. They were divine. Gloomy sunset weather? It could be RAINING outside & I wouldn't care right now. It was a total 180. Butter. Do it! I suggest you go for the gold, kerrygold Irish butter. Matcha. I love matcha so it's an automatic order but it's a definite winner. Not too sweet, because matcha isn't naturally sweet. Custard. Hubby's favorite. He's a vanilla head, so... Salted egg yolk. Hubby's other favorite. I like, he loves. Ube. WOW. Better than the matcha which is weird coming from me. The Ube filling BAKES INTO the interior & it is amazing! I wished I'd gotten 6 of these. The puffs. How friggin adorable. Just throw in 6 puffs. Or 18. Then dip them in the side of custard that comes with. If you get extra to take home (& you should), all you have to do is be sure to reheat them as per the directions on the box. Just place them on a baking sheet lined with foil, or an oven rack (I've done both, both work), at 325 for around 10 minutes. I think 12-15 minutes is actually ideal. I couldn't believe how soft they were after this. Like new! The next day, after being refrigerated all night! I know weird, but fact! A couple of days later I requested that we go again next Saturday. Like when you were a kid & you couldn't wait for Friday because Friday's were pizza night. Whenever I'm around Irving in the Sunset, I always try to make a stop at Pineapple King. Parking can be tough in the area and parking along Irving is metered. They use kerrygold butter for the butter option. Love that butter. The guava butter one is pretty muted in guava flavor. I thought pandan was the best in flavor. The black sesame was just okay, I love black sesame but sadly I don't think it goes well with a pineapple bun. The salted egg was most disappointing since it says 流沙 (lava, egg forward) but tasted more like 奶黃 (custard, milk forward). If you dimsum, you know what I mean about these fillings. For just a plain pineapple bun, I think it's good but really buttery. When you bite down there's no bounce back. Butter supreme box: chocolate marshmallow, guava butter, salted egg butter, and original. The chocolate part was decent but I couldn't make out the marshmallow flavor. The guava butter was yummy, especially if you love butter. It really tastes like a ton of butter with guava paste. Salted egg yolk butter was sweeter than I expected Original butter literally just had a huge hunk of butter in it, not very interesting. Matcha mochi pineapple bun: The matcha flavor was too weak, the red bean really overpowered the matcha.
