Ice Chilled Milk Tea (comes with a tiny pineapple bun)

This casual San Francisco bakery features iconic pineapple buns (also known as bolo bao) and quirky tarts. While the buns may resemble pineapples, their flavor is uniquely indulgent, with a rich, buttery filling that makes every bite melt in your mouth. They run an efficient operation--simply order at the counter, and your number will be called shortly. They also offer conveniently-packaged boxed sets, perfect for gifting or sharing, making it a great spot to pick up a treat for any occasion.

You can order online or at the shop. Ordered a mini pineapple bun and a salted egg yolk pineapple bun. The mini was fine, its bun could've been a little more soft. The salted egg yolk one, lacked in flavor. I think it should've had a little more salted egg flavor but I know not everyone likes that flavor. They do have a ton of other flavors so maybe the other ones taste better. My friend liked her pineapple filled pineapple bun.

*** Takeout Only and Cash Only *** Pineapple King Bakery is a popular bakery that specializes in Hong Kong-style baked goods and drinks. The bakery was pretty quiet when it first opened, but after COVID it gained popularity on IG and now there is almost always a short waiting line here. There is also another location in Fremont. [Parking]: Metered street parking only and the shop is located in a busy part of the neighborhood (Irving Street Chinatown aka the "Third Chinatown"). I got lucky and immediately found a 30-minute metered parking spot nearby. [Ordering]: There was a short waiting line, but luckily it moved fairly quickly. Be prepared to place your order as the staff did not really answer my question when I asked "What are the most popular items here?" Customers can also place online pickup orders via the bakery's website. [Menu]: Per Pineapple King Bakery's Top 10 Items list and Square online menu, some of the most popular items include Guava Butter Pineapple Bun and Croissant Egg Tart (Portuguese egg tart). All drinks come with a complimentary Pineapple Bite. *** Egg Custard Tart (regular HK egg tart - $2.35): A solid egg tart, but it wasn't very flaky and tasted cold. Croissant Egg Tart (Portuguese egg tart - an upgrade of the traditional egg tart with croissant crust and caramelized top, $3.90): Definitely an upgraded version of regular egg custard tart and the croissant crust made all the difference. Guava Butter Pineapple Bun (one of our most popular items - cold, sweet, and smooth butter inside a warm pineapple bun - $4.65): S-tier bun with a soft & pillow-like texture. Hot Hong Kong Milk Tea drink with a complimentary Pineapple Bite (small, regular sweet - $5.25): I sampled the drink and it had the right balance of slight black tea bitterness and a hint of milk with just the right amount of sweetness. *** Top-notch pineapple buns and I can definitely see the appeal. Now that I know the drink comes with a complimentary Pineapple Bite, I actually prefer pairing the Pineapple Bite with the drink rather than ordering pineapple buns with various fillings on their own.

Original pineapple bun, custard pineapple bun, croissant egg tart, egg tart

Love pineapple buns and I was amazed by all their different flavors! Line was pretty long but it moved quickly so it took around 10 mins to order and get our food. No seating so we took it to a nearby park. The original pineapple bun was my fav as it was tasty, moist, and slightly crispy! The custard pineapple bun was more crunchy and the custard filling was good but pretty sweet. I had one bite of the egg tart but it was solid and not overly sweet. The croissant egg tart was also good, nicely flaky and crunchy, and the egg filling was thick and creamy. Overall, fresh and tasty goods! Big sizes and good prices. I would be back if I come back to SF!

Classic HK bakery! You know they'll be good when they're cash only lol. Long line but it moved quickly; only waited about 10 minutes to order and got our goods right away. No seating so we took it to the nearby park to enjoy. Pricing was great; $12 for 5 items is a steal in this economy! All in all, the wait is worth it and I would come back Plain Pineapple Bun (4/5): soft and moist, nice pineapple flavor. I didn't eat it right away so I'm not sure if it would've been crispier if it had been fresh, but I wish it had more of a slight crunch. I only took one bite of the custard pineapple bun, but that one had more of a crunch, and the custard cream was a tiny bit sweet Croissant (Portuguese) Egg Tart (4.5/5): loveeee the croissant exterior. It was perfectly flaky and crispy and held the egg filling well. The egg filling was thick and slightly sweet and caramelized. I also had a bite of the regular egg tart which wasn't as crispy or flavorful, but my mom liked it since it was less sweet

Pineapple King is one of my top eats during our San Francisco trip. I've had bolo pineapple buns countless times in LA and even in Hong Kong, but never quite like this. It was absolutely heavenly. The standout was the bolo bun with guava butter. Imagine guava jam and butter had a delicious baby and being tucked inside a warm, soft pineapple bun and that's exactly what it tasted like. We also tried the classic butter bun, which was excellent, but the guava version was the winner for us. For something savory, we ordered the salted egg yolk and BBQ pork bun, and it was delicious. The combination of sweet, salty, and savory flavors worked really well together. We also tried the pandan bun, which was fine, but it didn't quite stand out compared to the other flavors. I wish we had time to come back and sample more of the menu. I had my eye on the matcha and red bean varieties and would have loved to try them. I also ordered a Hong Kong milk tea and it was rich and strong. They even serve it with a mini warm bolo bun on top of the cup, which is both adorable and delicious. Pineapple King is the kind of place I would happily travel back to San Francisco for. Now if they could just open a location in LA my life would be complete!

Mango Pineapple Puff (2 come in an order $3.80)

I finally did some research into pineapple buns a while back and found out that they are just called that because of how they kinda look like pineapples with the sugar cookie crackle top. There's no pineapple lol. I apologize for my ignorance. Since my first visit I have come back at here at least four more times. The lines are now manageable and the wait is not long. I usually order the original pineapple puffs filled with cream (every order includes two buns). These are the best item in my opinion. If you happen to get them or the other pineapple buns when they are fresh out of the oven, they are even yummier! I always think that I'm going to just eat one original pineapple puff and save the other. I never do. I just eat both. They are best eaten right away anyways. Props to Manager Hana who so kindly and professionally replied to my original review!

Today I stopped by to try the pineapple custard bun which was crispy on the outside and absolutely luscious inside, over flowing with velvety custard. I also got a glizzy in a blanket, just because I haven't seen one like that before and it did not disappoint. A pretty basic hot dog stuffed inside buttery flakey dough. The bread seemed almost under baked in the best way, it was definitely baked through but just so soft and chewy. The meat inside burst with flavor. It was nostalgic and also elevated. Service was quick and it was cash only. Ambiance was chill, as it's just a walk up counter and no interior access.

I preordered a Ten Blessings New Year Gift Box (Limited Edition), and picked it up on a Sunday evening. The place was busy. There was no space to sit and eat. But some folks were standing and eating outside. Most of the folks were taking out. My gift box contained all their favorites (mentioned below). Pineapple buns were my favorite. It had kind of a crumbly texture and great flavor. May be guava one was my favorite. Tarts were good too. * Croissant Egg Tart * Meringue Taro Egg Tart * Pandan Croissant Ega Tart * Salted Egg Pork Floss Egq Tart * Pineapple Crust BBQ Pork Tart * Guava Butter Mini Pineapple Bun * Pandan Coconut Butter Mini Pineapple Bun * Salted Egg Butter Mini Pineapple Bun * Mini Pineapple Butter Gold * Mini Chocolate Marshmallow Pineapple Butter

    Pineapple bun heaven!!
    Jacqui Y.

Aaaaaahmazing bolo buns! They are unlike any other bolo bun I've ever had. These had a texture of a brioche and mochi! Such a variety of pineapple buns and other pastries, I really wanted to try all! We ended up trying the original, gold butter, custard filled, mango custard filled, pandan butter, guava butter and bbq pork. We also had to try the egg tart and the bbq pork tart. That bbq pork tart was phenomenal! You get the flaky puff pastry and mochi combo! Everything was superb but our faves from all that we tried were: Gold butter, guava butter, that bbq pork tart and the bbq pork filled buns. We left with another box to enjoy at the park!

Finally getting around to reviewing one of my favorite places to grab a sweet treat in SF Pineapple King Bakery. These pineapple buns are addicting. Soft fluffy bread with that perfect crispy sweet topping. I grabbed my usual the mini pineapple bun, guava butter pineapple bun, and this time tried the ube pineapple bun. Honestly hard to pick a favorite but the guava butter one is our favorite. Order ahead online or cash only if you're walking up to the window. Friendly service and everything always tastes super fresh. One of those spots you randomly crave during the week once you've had it.

The pineapple buns at this shop are delicious! But when I went to pick up my order today, one of the old women there had a really bad attitude.

Clockwise from top left: Butter, plain, Ube, salted egg yolk, custard, puffs, matcha.

The first time I came here, I was underwhelmed. It seemed like another overrated joint (one of so many, am I right?). I could see the balloon that held all of the anticipated excitement my husband had of showing me a "new" spot (it was new to me) all but heartbreakingly deflate. Sigh. Not wanting that crestfallen look to prevail, I told him we'd try again. A hole in the wall that is takeout only, the customarily drab sunset weather doesn't do the vibe any favors out here. When it's overcast & cold outside, does anyone want cold pineapple buns to go with it? That was my first experience, so I was curious about how the do over was going to go. Night & day... Yelpess with the mostess Cherylynn was spot on when she said the buns need to be warm & eaten asap. This is key to experiencing a stellar treat over a humdrum one. On our 2nd visit they were hot. They were pillowy. They were divine. Gloomy sunset weather? It could be RAINING outside & I wouldn't care right now. It was a total 180. Butter. Do it! I suggest you go for the gold, kerrygold Irish butter. Matcha. I love matcha so it's an automatic order but it's a definite winner. Not too sweet, because matcha isn't naturally sweet. Custard. Hubby's favorite. He's a vanilla head, so... Salted egg yolk. Hubby's other favorite. I like, he loves. Ube. WOW. Better than the matcha which is weird coming from me. The Ube filling BAKES INTO the interior & it is amazing! I wished I'd gotten 6 of these. The puffs. How friggin adorable. Just throw in 6 puffs. Or 18. Then dip them in the side of custard that comes with. If you get extra to take home (& you should), all you have to do is be sure to reheat them as per the directions on the box. Just place them on a baking sheet lined with foil, or an oven rack (I've done both, both work), at 325 for around 10 minutes. I think 12-15 minutes is actually ideal. I couldn't believe how soft they were after this. Like new! The next day, after being refrigerated all night! I know weird, but fact! A couple of days later I requested that we go again next Saturday. Like when you were a kid & you couldn't wait for Friday because Friday's were pizza night. That crestfallen look my husband had was replaced with delighted satisfaction. Glee even. We went again the following Saturday. 5 stars

Pineapple King Bakery - San Francisco Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Pineapple King Bakery - San Francisco

Second request for vegan options, please? Someone said they have them, but there's no information and this could waste us a trip.

I don't know the answer with certainty, but I wouldn't bet money on it. Traditional baking methods are not vegan, and unless they specify, the chances are next to none. Save yourself the drive.

Any tentative timeframe when the Fremont location will be open? I am eagerly waiting!!!

Thank you for your interest. There was a delay before but now construction is making good progress. We will broadcast to everyone as soon as we have a more concrete date. Thank you

Will this place be self-serve again like before covid?

Most likely not because our most popular items like pineapple buns with butter and pineapple puffs are made-to-order anyway. Thank you for your patience.

    Is fremont location open?

Hi, thank you for reaching out! We do not have a definitive opening date yet but we are trying to open as soon as possible. Continue to follow up and stay tuned for more updates.

What are the current prices for the plain pineapple buns?

Thank you for reaching out! You can checkout our website online menu and place your order today and schedule your pickup! Fresh baked goodness everyday!

What's the difference between the pineapple bun and pineapple puff?

Pineapple puffs are mini size of the original pineapple buns. The puff flavors include original custard, mango and matcha! Try them all in a sampler Deluxe Box or individually and come with 2 pieces her order! Enjoy all the fresh baked goodness…

Is there an estimated opening date for the Fremont location?

Hopefully early December 2022. We are pushing as much as we can. Thank you for your support and patience.

Are these safe for people with tree nut allergies?

Hi Cathline, we don't use peanuts in our bakery but we do use walnuts and almonds. One of the ingredients we use does contain peanuts though. There may be cross contamination with the tools we use.

How do I store and reheat the buns?

You should refrigerate them. You can reheat in the oven or air fryer.

Is there a separate line for online orders? Have never tried this bakery yet and based on a couple of pics I saw seems like yes but wanted to be sure. Thank you.

Yes, the line is to the left, and an online order pick-up is to the right. Due to their busyness, you may need to wait a bit even to pick up, but totally worth it.

Do any of the pastries have nuts? I have a friend who has a nut allergy.

Owner answered a similar question and claim that one of the ingredients they use contain peanuts and their tools might be cross contaminated. They use almond and walnut in some pastries.

Are the prices when ordering and paying online the same as ordering in person?

Yes, if you order online for pickup then the prices are the same. If you order for delivery through app like Doordash, the prices are higher.

How long will these buns keep before going stale (thinking of taking them as road trip grub)?

How you store it really affects this. If you wrap what you don't eat in plastic wrap, the texture/moisture is preserved for 2-3 days (pending the item).…

What items here are vegan If any?

    Nothing, use lard in pastries

Are the prices higher when ordering online than if you order in person?

I believe the prices are the same. It's also just quicker so that you can just pick it up and not have to wait in line.

Do the puddings have regular milk or coconut milk?

We have Organic Milk Pudding and also Organic Coconut Pandan Milk Pudding, in additon to Organic Matcha Milk Pudding and Mango Puddings. Website order for schedule pickup and/or online deliveries (Uber Eats, DoorDash, GrubHub, and PostMates).

Any vegan options? If so what are the options? Thank you!!!

Yes, many options. However, it is not gluten free.

Hi! For COVID-19 safety purposes, are the breads/pastries at Pineapple King Bakery being packed by staff instead of allowing customers to self-serve?

They no longer allow customers to pick the buns. People order at the door and they pick the order for you.

The not as good...a standard butter croissant. Maybe we got a dud but there was a serious lack of layers in ours and it wasn't as crisp or as buttery as I like. I've always wanted to try this place since I see a line every time I walked by. There's a lot of foot and car traffic. It's definitely a busy area so expect to park in one of the nearby residential areas or be extremely and walk/bike/bus here! Upon stepping into the tiny shop, I was enveloped in the sweet smell of chocolate chip cookies. It was tempting to put that in my bag, but I stuck with my game plan. They do self serve for all the baked goods and drinks except the pizza and focaccia. You tell the cashier what you grabbed. There's self serve complimentary water on the side too. Got a pecan swirl, one of each square focaccia flavors, and a half pizza (hot). The pizza flavor of the day was triple mushroom with sesame ginger garlic vinaigrette and mozzarella. It was 10/10 delicious!! Do note that they don't heat up the focaccia. Personally, after tasting everything, I'd say the pizza is more worth it than the focaccia "pizzas". The pecan roll was quite addicting too. You can also skip the line if you want to order online on their website and schedule a pick up time, but my gift card didn't work so I just waited in line.

While it's not my first time here, it's been a long time and we tried something new and unique: CHEWIE COOKIE - $9 each They had 2 flavors and since we couldn't decide on which, we got both! And man I really get the hype of adding Katalfi into the mix. It's like today's rice crisps in a chocolate bar. Only, you add pistachio cream into the mix! These "cookies" are wrapped in a layer of soft chewy mochi, and when you bit into it, there's an amazing sweet crunch from the Katalfi. They advise to wait 15 minutes before eating since it's kept fridge rated. Worth giving a try! MATCHA CHEWIE COOKIE - Matcha Marshmallow with matcha Katalfi filling. DUBAI CHEWIE COOKIE - Cocoa marshmallow with Pistachio, Katalfi, and Milk Chocolate. It seems a lot of items were sold out by the time we got there, but not these "CHEWIE COOKIES!"

I'll never be the same and will judge all drinks on this moving forward. We loved our pastries- chocolate croissant and chocolate-banana-almond croissant. The star was the garlic cream cheese salt bread. Out of this world!!! Wonderful friendly service to boot.

However, with 2026 economy, I don't make the income I used to, so I like to treat myself. I don't go as often, so going for a yummy patisserie and a coffee drink, is definitely a treat! Always leaving them a cash tip. I haven't been in for a while, as I'm budgeting and the owners are at their other location in Concord mostly now. Their hours have reduced, 8-1 thurs -Sat and if you get there at noon, be aware they start breaking things down because they close at 1:00. Getting there at noon on a Saturday with only two customers in the shop, sitting and eating. Nobody in line, I am getting to go a latte drink and a cinnamon morning bun. I waited over 10 mins for my coffee drink. The person who usually does the drinks wasn't there, I guess was in the back so someone else was doing it. She heard and knew what I ordered, and never once told me I have a couple of drinks ahead of yours. It's going to be a wait. Apparently there were drink orders that were never told ahead of time to make and they were really behind. Only two customers in the whole shop. I have somewhere to go later, so I just ask, "hey, I didn't realize it was going to take this long."Between the music playing in my EarPod and the espresso machine I didn't hear her say to the cashier to give me my money back. I wasn't wanting my money back. I wanted my coffee drink with my pastry and the no communication. Like, "yours is next, or sorry for the wait. Nothing. Instead I see her going slower and told the customer before me to come back and gave her my espresso shot that was to go in my drink! Very passive aggressive and a power move, unhappy miserable, angry, person. Whoever this person is really rude, and has no business being around people. They need to keep the usual barista up front with long dark hair, who is always bubbly friendly, efficient and has impeccable customer service. The one today was like "I'd rather give you your money back and get the fk out" Rather than work on my customer service. I just think with all that's going on in the world, being kind, compassionate, communicative and accountability goes a long way. You never know what someone is going through. Maybe me coming in for a $5 morning bun and an $6 oat milk latte with my fixed income from being on a medical leave, is what makes my day. I wish for the angry barista, would go through sensitive and diversity customer service training. Because it really felt like she has some homophobia/bigotry towards me.
