We have been making a point to try and visit Butter Lab & Chef Annie at least once a week! There always seems to be some wonderful new sweet treat behind the glass (occasionaly a savory item, as well ). The staff and chef are kind and engaging. Annie (owner) is too cool. Found this gem while at work craving pandan anything! I've tried pretty much all her crinkle cookies and the pandan, ube, thai tea are my favorite. A light crispy edge exterior with extremely soft dense interior (I believe she uses real yams!). They're not overly sweet and the pandan, ube, thai tea flavor comes through so well (not artificial at all). I've also had the ube cheesecake, which is light in texture and so good! I've also had the ube brownie (same light crispy exterior and super soft dense interior, not overly sweet). I've also had.....jk jk - I've obviously been here too many times. So glad to see a Filipino fusion bakery in Montebello! Annie and Austin were so nice and welcoming, and their baked goods were no joke. They are big on their flavors! Each cookie tastes exactly as you'd expect. My favorite was the thai tea one, which isn't in their menu rotation, but consider this my formal peitition to make it one. I also really enjoyed the ube brownie and basque cheesecake. Tip: when you get home, warm up the ube brownie before you eat it! Drove by here the other day, but they were closed on a Tuesday. I stopped by on Monday because I wanted to try their tiramisu, but the owner Annie said it sold out the day before. She said next time I can call ahead and she can try to save me one which was very kind of her! I did get a whipped cheesecake. It was the last one and it was amazing! I wish I could have a whole pie dish of this stuff. The crust was nice to have with this not too sweet, caramel, whipped cheesecake 100/10 I would get this again or any other variation flavor of it. Maybe I can order it for my bday?! I also tried the Ube Blondie because she says she cooks the Ube herself. I really enjoyed it. It was moist and dense, and the Ube flavor was light. It was not too sweet either. She also sells a bag of brownie edges, but I did not get that. There was also a flan, Basque cheesecake, cookies, banana pudding, but I didn't get all of them... To my regret. The crinkle cookies have a lot of different flavors, like sesame, Pandan coconut, Matcha, corn - saffron, black chocolate, ube, strawberry and she has a little menu of flavors she has that changes daily. By far my FAVORITE BAKERY and I'm a snob when it comes to these things. The desserts are sooo delicious! I love the Ube and other Asian-inspired fusions. The cheesecakes are some of my favorite picks, and the buttercream on the cakes have the perfect flavor- not too sweet and just melts right in my mouth. When I came in, I was immediately greeted with the kind of warm welcome that made me feel like family. The staff is professional and fun, and I really love the ambiance of the bakery along with all the little decorative details. I love how there are so many live plants that contribute to the freshness of the atmosphere. Annie, the owner, also does beautiful, custom cakes and delivers! My favorite thing about all the items was they were not too sweet! I'm not a big dessert person, for the most part, because I don't like the amount of sugar in most desserts. This review is solely based on their custom cake that I ordered. I submitted an inquiry online and filled in all the necessary information. I heard back within 1 day, which I really appreciated! I placed my order about 2 weeks in advance for a 6in cake and was quoted $85. I noticed the store is closed on Tuesdays & Wednesdays, which was when I was supposed to pick up my cake so I asked about that. She told me not to worry and that my cake would be ready and she'll deliver it to me because of the store being closed. On the day of the cake delivery, I appreciated how she kept me updated on her ETA. Eventually, I got my cake and I was really disappointed. :( I asked for the cake to contain an anime character and the words "Happy Birthday" written across the top, but other than that, she had free reign on how to design the cake. The picture printed on top of the cake was of poor quality; I could see the printer lines, which ruined the otherwise elegant appearance of the cake. I also wasn't happy with the written words on top; it was very bulky and seemed cramped. The cake itself (Ube flavored) was delicious - honestly, probably one of my favorite cakes I've had. It was perfectly moist and the ube flavor was very pronounced, but for $85, I expected more out of the design. I reached out to her and expressed my disappointment/feedback and she was very receptive and kind about it (which is why I'm giving a 4 star rating). She offered a refund on the design portion of the cake, which I thought was fair. I think she handled the situation perfectly and I'm glad to know they have such delicious treats being offered! read more

My first time trying a basque cheesecake, I'm not sure what the difference is compared to a regular cheesecake, but it just tastes like a regular cheesecake with it looking burnt outside. A decent cheesecake though. I'd skip the chocolate chip cookie, I'd had better, there just wasn't enough chocolate chip. Read that this place had their grand opening recently, and since I live so close, I figured I'd drop by and grab a treat for myself. The displays were partially filled on both sides, I'm sure more will come in once things start selling. A green item with coconut shreds on it caught my eye. The girl came out from the back and greeted us. I asked if the green was pandan, and she said yes. I've had pandan before, so I was familiar with the taste. My pokemon shirt caught her eye, and she told me she thought it was very cute. I thanked her and bought the pastry. Earlier this year Butter Lab helped us with cupcakes for our son's birthday and we loved them! So when it was time to order a birthday cake for my wife's birthday we knew we would be going back to Butter Lab! Annie, the owner, was responsive, communicative and very easy to work with. The website even has a function where you can upload pictures of cake designs and features that you would like Butter Lab to incorporate into your own cake - pretty cool! The ube birthday cake was beautiful with plant decorations and it had just the right amount of sweetness. The cake was an absolute hit at the party! Upon trying the ube cake many of our friends asked where we got the cake and of course we told them, Butter Lab! We will be back to try the other cake flavors and their drinks as well. read more
