On a Monday morning, I popped in for a pastry. My heart was set on a scone to accommodate my coffee.... Unfortunately, halfway through the enjoyment of my scone, I noticed the center was not cooked. I took my pastry back and the shop agreed and apologized. The cafe made it right by offering my money back and providing me another pastry to satisfy my tummy. I replaced my blueberry scone with a poppy almond muffin- the muffin hit the spot. The muffin had good taste and flavors. Given the fact that the cafe made it right I would definitely come back. The main street, Morro Bay Blvd., was quiet with plentiful parking as we considered our breakfast options, easily settling on Buttercup Bakery & Café after we espied its outside patio slowly filling up -- and that's a good sign. The line to the counter moved briskly, and when it was our turn, we ordered our reliable breakfast staples: the regular breakfast burrito, the avocado breakfast burrito, and a ham sandwich. First off, there wasn't anything regular about the burrito at all -- it was a hefty log, stuffed with creamy scrambled eggs, crispy potatoes and bacon, and melted cheese, all hugged by a warm flour tortilla. The other, similarly hefty burrito had a generous smear of avocado as its creamy base, with chicken breast, lettuce, diced tomatoes, and microgreens that gave it a bright, satisfying crunch. The ham sandwich was a standout as well. There's an artisanal quality about it -- the thickly sliced ham was slightly pink and not overly salty, a telltale sign that it was minimally processed. Various works of art by local artists adorn the walls inside, speaking to this eatery's strong ties to the community. They also offer other breakfast staples -- pancakes, croissants, and bagels. Properly recharged, we enjoyed our morning sightseeing around the dock (and the Rock) before reluctantly making our way back south. Five stars for a great recharge. read more

We stopped in Morro Bay before heading to Monterey for the 4th of July weekend. Buttercup seemed like a cool spot so we had brunch. My wife and I both got breakfast burritos and it sure was yummy! I just don't like the fact that it started opening after my second bite but it was flavorful! We got lemon meringue tart and the toffee walnut cookies. Those are pretty tasty as well. The seats outside were pleasant with the cool breeze and the shaded patio helping out with the sun. The staff was very nice and I got more sweet treats with the Cash App local money. This is such a darling and welcoming coffee shop we discovered in a quick trip to Morro Bay. We were drawn by the variety of iced coffee options and didn't intend to get any bakery treats, but couldn't help ourselves once we saw them. If we had not been on our way to a funeral, we definitely would have eaten in the outside patio area as there was ample seating. The morning was unexpectedly warm, the sun was shining and the birds were chirping so I would highly recommend making time to stay for a while and sip and eat at Buttercup. The eclectic space suits a variety of tastes and makes anyone feel like a friend. I was really bummed we were on a tight schedule that we hd to get our order togo. We ordered the Coconut Cold Brew from their signature menu and then two different cookies for later. I sure wish I would have bought more cookies because sharing them on the long drive home was hard because of their delicious, well balanced flavors with a nice slight crunch and a soft chewy center! This review is only for their baked goods- their food may be good but I didn't try that. While we were in Morro Bay we tried four different amazing baked products. Their chocolate chip cookie is spot on. Chewy middles, good quality chocolate. Their goat cheese shortbread is not too goaty, with a caramelized edge and soft chewy middle. The ginger molasses is more molasses than ginger but still amazing. Finally we had the berry tart with almond. OMG - to die for! read more

I'm giving their bakery items 5+ stars! Their croissants are the best, and the croissant breakfast sandwiches are what dreams are made of. I also love their goat cheese cookies, you truly can't go wrong with any baked good there. The only thing I think could use improvement here is the coffee; it leaves a lot to be desired. But honestly, that never stops me. The baked goods are superb, and the customer service is great! While Scout Coffee makes a great vanilla bean latte, their food items are way too rich for my liking. Been to this place several time, was surprised to see that I haven't reviewed it yet. This review is for takeout. So good we came in to pick up our care package. They have very limited seating inside but do have seating outside. In the winter it's can be a little cool. This was one of the first places we ever ate at. If you're staying in town, I would recommend picking up your morning coffee and pastier and walk to the embarcadero and see the Otters. A good way to start out the day. I had to ask for my other two pastries as she forgot. She handed me 3 separate bags pastry bags leaving it hard to juggle it all with a hot chai.
