Service was great. No complaints. Prime rib was actually pretty good considering it cost $30.99 and it came with a side salad. Definitely would come back again since I work down the street at the port.

Do yourself a favor and get the churro waffle and Irish coffee!! The indulgence is worth it I promise. The waffle is everything you wish a funnel cake would live up to. So crispy and delicious with the cinnamon sugar coating. Nice diner setting and a small parking lot/street parking right near Jack London Square

I had to take a moment to share such a wonderful experience. After chaperoning my kids at prom and navigating a stressful, rainy drive back toward Oakland from the Chabot Space Center--dealing with flooding, accidents, and getting completely turned around--I decided I deserved a little dessert (and a drink ). I showed up just five minutes before closing, and honestly expected to feel like a burden--but instead, I was greeted by Joe, who welcomed me with the warmest smile and such a genuinely kind demeanor. Not once did he make me feel rushed. I had heard the bread pudding was amazing, and wow--it absolutely lived up to the hype. Paired with a perfectly made margarita, it was exactly what I needed to unwind. Joe even took the time to ask how I liked my margarita--weak, regular, or strong (he must've seen the stress on my face! ). His attentiveness and friendliness really stood out. We got to chatting, and he mentioned he works in Vallejo on Wednesdays--safe to say, I'll definitely be making a visit out there to see him again! Joe left such a lasting impression on this tired, stressed-out mama. His kindness, patience, and hospitality truly turned my whole night around. Just a reminder that compassion and great service always make a difference. Thank you, Joe!

My first time dining here, and it was truly wonderful. I sat at the counter and was followed over by the host with a menu -- no wait time at all. The diner is clean, cozy, and chic. The staff is warm and inviting. The portion sizes are HUGE, so my only regret is that I didn't have a buddy with me to split all of this food with. I went for the classic eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, and toast combo. I asked for my bacon well / crispy and it came out perfect -- shoutout to the kitchen for a delicious breakfast. The Jessica's Coffee Cake was the perfect "something sweet" to end the meal with, but fair warning, this is not the size you usually get from say a Starbucks -- you could feed a family with this thing. I'll be back. Thanks for a memorable breakfast, Buttercup staff.

The P is for pie, but today I chose the C for coffee & coffee cake. I was warned by my hotel that the portions are huge and one leaves here with a to-go box and in a diabetic coma. I chose a lite breakfast of scrambled egg-whites, a turkey patty, and fresh fruit. Made my own vanilla flavored coffee. My server brought me vanilla syrup in a glass, a mini-bowl full of half-n-half creamer and I doctored my coffee to my liking. Hey it worked. To avoid spilling the syrup everywhere, pour the syrup over the back of a spoon in the coffee cup. Voila no mess. My breakfast was good. The place was packed. Had a family with two of the most Hyper-ADHD kids in the place invading my personal space, bumping the feet against the booth, to laying down on the booth, and bursting out with a 'Yah-ooooo' while his Das tried to have adult conversation with his friends. I tell ya, that man has his hands full. Next my coffee cake arrived. Wow, humongous piece. I only took a couple of bites and sat and enjoyed my coffee while I was thinking of my review. A greasy spoon this is, but this is the spot in Oakland. Ok so the family leaves and here comes the busboy, clinging, clanging, the dishes, silverware in the black bin so loud that I looked up from my phone & saw others look his way. I paused and asked him, 'Are you mad today?' He smiled and said No. I think he got the hint and became quieter. Sometimes people are just not aware. No merch today. I know I'll be back. Decided to get breakfast while my car was charging. Ordered Eggs Benedict with my eggs poached medium. I told the waitress I wanted my eggs really cooked and I heard her say it into whatever device she takes orders on. When my plate arrived the eggs were barely cooked. The English muffin was soggy and the hollandaise sauce was horrible--heavy, salty, and grainy. Maybe other food is good here but I don't recommend the Eggs Benedict!

Went for the shrimp and grits based on the recommendation here. I was disappointed. As a POC I thought they would taste like southern shrimp and grits, especially being in Oakland, but they don't. The grits are undercooked and lumpy, the shrimp is breaded and gets soggy in all that liquid and veggies, the overall taste was just meh. I wish I had ordered something else. The atmosphere and other food looked amazing. I saw the omelettes, waffles, fried chicken and other food that looked amazing. Service was great as well. I will be back but I will order something else next time.

Took the crew out for brunch for Xmas. It was a nice get together. I didn't get a pic of the mozzarella sticks but they were 5outta5. Nice size, crisp & very cheesy! Churro waffles - Crew member said they were good! Veggie omelette- Crew member really enjoyed the dish. Loaded potatoes - 4.5outta5 a lil too much cheese but delicious otherwise Shrimp & Grits 4outta5 Didn't care for the clumps of grits & although the sauce was delicious, there was a tad too much of it. Good seasoning, shrimp cooked perfectly & I enjoyed the dish. Nice atmosphere, attentive service; We all enjoyed the experience.

The service was excellent! We had a party of five, and one person arrived 15 minutes late. The staff was patient and welcoming, waiting until our whole group was there. They also checked in on us every 3-5 minutes to see if we needed anything, which I really appreciated. The ambiance has a classic yet modern restaurant style, very clean and nicely set up. Now, onto the food. I enjoyed the omelette I ordered, and the sausages were very tasty. While I personally prefer my scrambled eggs slightly undercooked, I didn't mind them here. A little salt and pepper on top added a nice touch of flavor. Overall, this place offers good value for the price.

They have a parking area, I guess it's enough for the people that eat @ the restaurant. I did not have any issues finding parking. It's really huge inside the restaurant, lots of seating & also extra space that no one is in, but ready (great for large parties) It was a little busy inside but, they also had a lot of people in the front, either waiting for the food to go out to the tables, chefs or just extra workers. It took less then 10mins to get us seated, a party of 7 but assuming it's because the tables that were able to seat the big parties were already taken & they were all kind of spread out. It's a nice place to check out if your in the area. They have lots of options on the menu & our food spread was pretty tasty, we shared our plates because we were not that hungry & we had no leftovers, but whatever we all ordered, did its job & filled our belly's for the ride back to SJ read more

I'm not sure what the hype is about. I got the pumpkin waffle and made it a combo with scrambled eggs and sausage. The waffle was soggy before I even added the syrup. The candied walnuts saved it tho. The scrambled eggs were just that. The sausage wasn't anything special either. The service was also lackluster. All of that being said, the ambiance was pretty positive, which is why the 3 stars. The space was inviting and the energy in the room was upbeat. read more

I went in to reserve a spot for seven people, and the girl told me she could not check me in till most of my party was there. The parking lot is small, so they had to look for street parking. Once everyone arrived, we got seated in less than 10 minutes. Our server checked on us only once and did not offer us more coffee refills. I love this restaurant. Anything you order from here is guaranteed to be good. I love they have a special menu for each season. The breakfast is phenomenal, omelettes are my favorite, I recommend the extra omelette (that's the name) but all of them are good. My friend took me here for brunch one day years ago and I've been hooked ever since. The service is also 10/10, the food is always made to perfection and the wait is usually not long. I loved the old location but this downtown one is very clean and tidy as well with the same great service and food. Definitely a go to for brunch or any type of food. They pretty much have it all. read more

Visiting family and this place was recommended so I was hoping to have a great experience. We did receive good service but many of our dishes came out extremely greasy and lacking flavor. I've been a customer of Buttercup in Oakland for years but today might be our last time coming. Ordered cheesy grits and they had absolutely NO flavor they said the cheese was mixed in with the grits. Mixed it up a few times still no flavor nor cheese flavor. Added hella salt and pepper for flavor and still not the same as the Buttercup in Concord. My husband took a sip of my coffee said it was good so I asked for a refill of my coffee and they did but also gave him a cup and charged him. He did not ask for a cup of coffee. Overall flavor of our $40 breakfast was just ok. Guess it really depends on what you order at this particular restaurant. read more

On a whim we came to Jack London Square searching for dinner. Although the parking lot was rather crowded Buttercup's dining room was empty. Our server Julie was attentive but not overwhelming. There was a steady flow of customers, and once one table left the buser quickly came to clean the tables. For dinner we had the pork chop with baked potatoes and mixed vegetables and cashew chicken with rice. The food was piping hot, flavorful and came out incredibly fast. Not only was it delicious but many people admired our plates and decided to order the same. And the portion size was enormous, clearly enough for two meals. read more

The menu is very large and meets all needs at this diner! I have always had great experiences at diners when it comes to steaks and prime rib, so me and my friend I ordered the prime rib. It was a very delicious! We are almost the whole plate! It was a conservative size of 12 oz! Yay! I hate bringing leftover steak home. We had a good meal, so we ordered dessert! Doesn't disappoint either!! The dessert menu is long as well! There is a full bar there, so you may order a cocktail or beer! We ordered both and all was wonderful! Everyone that served us was super nice and totally attentive! The place was At medium capacity, so we were happy to be paid attention to!!! The diner is a finer diner! You will love the big booths! It's spendy for what it is, but I think that's because of the location. The food is pretty good, we had different breakfast options, and we also chose to go for the alcoholic coffee drinks, which I have to say we're pretty amazing! Nice, friendly, fast service. Rolled into this spot in the evening was curious about dessert and how cute this name of this restaurant. We were greeted by happy human being, who is also the manager, Ruth. Her customer service was outstanding and she helped us navigate through the menu and made our special request happen with joy! We loved the fact this cafe vibe had a proper bar and with high end liquor options. The desserts were phenomenal and will definitely go back when I want to cheat on my waistline. We ordered a variety- key lime pie, Brownie Mud Bash (my favorite) and Blueberry Streusel Pie. They were all really good and enjoyable. I would highly recommend this spot, it's a high end all American cafe and the service is lovely and memorable. read more

I was excited to try this place after seeing Chilaquiles on the menu, so I decided to order them. Unfortunately, my meal was swimming in oil. It seemed as though a spoonful of oil had been poured over everything. There were pools of oil in the crevices, making it super unpleasant to the flavor and degraded my meal overall. This dish could definitely be improved. read more

I can't really say I've ever been disappointed by a meal here. My only complaint ever is that their club sandwich has too much meat, particularly ham but that can be a compliment for some folks. I used to come here when the line at Oakland Grill was too long but now typically just come here. I'm usually here for breakfast, even if it's nighttime or their wings. Breakfast items are always fresh and delicious. Really big fan of the chicken apple sausage omelet that comes with mushrooms and spinach. I always request extra crispy hash browns and they come out crispy and browned. I always appreciate coming here around noon and seeing all the items. Tables will be split with breakfast and lunch items and the full Gamut of foods. It's not uncommon to see omelets, Benedict's, wings, burgers, salads, or pasta at one table I will say the wings are some of the best in the city. Crispy, not oily and always juice inside with some great spice. Be sure to grab a pie on the way out and you'll have a great day. read more

Buttercup is usually absolutely lovely. Large portions, great food. We have come here and brought friends so many times. Today my partner and I ordered food for takeout instead of dining in bc it's been a long day. So we ordered our food online and came in to pay for and pick up our food tonight. When I was paying for the food, I asked the gal at the hostess station if the card reader was asking for the tip PERCENTAGE or DOLLAR AMOUNT, she said it was the screen was asking for the tip percentage (not the dollar amount), so I entered 20 - thinking it was 20%. Turns out she made me tip $20 on a $44 bill?!?!?!?!? That makes it nearly a 50% tip when that was not in our budget for tonight?!?! Anyway. I would NOT RECOMMEND EVER ordering or tipping on takeout, unless you have learned that the screen shows the DOLLAR AMOUNT rather than what we the financially incentivized hostess tells you what to tip. Not a great dining environment. No A/C, so hot inside. Customers were also kind of rowdy. Service was minimal at best, weren't greeted right away even though I wad staring right at them when I walked in waiting for someone to seat me. Waiter who took orders was friendly at least. Food was tasty, the cinnamon biscuit creation was... interesting. Nice sugar hit with a crunch. Huge portion sizes. But I can get better food and way better service and respect dining in anywhere else. Not a fan of this location. read more

Trynu was amazing as a waitress! My family and I stopped in for a quick bite of just pie and French fries! She went above and beyond to try and make sure we had a good visit. Normally the service here at buttercup is pretty slow because it's so crowded and the workers are usually a little scatter brained it seems. But the food is good and they give you big portions so I keep coming back. I say give it a try but don't be surprised if you have to wait a bit for a waitress to greet you or take your order! Can't believe it took me this long to try Buttercup! Jack London is home to some great brunch spots, but in terms of value and food, I think Buttercup might be the winner :) There's also a parking lot just outside the restaurant which is super convenient for those not in the area. We came for brunch on a Saturday and the place was pretty busy but we were seated promptly! Right away, I loved that the menu was so extensive but best of all - the prices! Definitely coming back to try their $25 prime rib but for brunch my BF and I got the Belgian waffle and huevos rancheros. Portion sizes were HUGE for the price and delicious - especially the huevos rancheros which was drenched in delicious salsas. Our waitress was also wonderful, coming by often to check on if we needed anything. Also love that there's a full bar - we got mimosas and a michelada but I haven't been to many diners that have a full bar so it's definitely a unique feature of the place. We used to come here twice a week after our dance class and they are finally open for indoor dining so for my birthday I suggested we come here to celebrate since we knew that Joe was working and there was pumpkin pie in season! It was good after some 18 months that we get to go back to one of our favorite restaurants for some comfort food and familiarity. Lorena is back working here and she was our regular server. The food is still delicious and we ordered the roast turkey dinner with extra gravy and a green salad for each of us. The portions are hearty and we have enough turkey and sides for another meal. ButtercuP is a family style restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in a beautiful yet relaxed atmosphere. Our large portions, house made soups, and fresh baked goods make us a favorite among our guests. We use only the freshest ingredients to make nearly all of our dishes from scratch. We are well known for our hearty breakfasts and offer an array of delicious three egg omelets, thick Belgian waffles, pancakes, skillets and four different choices of Egg Benedict. Breakfast is served all day. For lunch, we serve large overstuffed sandwiches, huge fresh salads, and our ever popular burgers. We also offer vegetarian selections. History

Established in 1988.

David and Debbie Shahvar opened their first restaurant in Walnut Creek, California in 1988. David had extensive restaurant management experience but was tired of working for large corporations. Debbie had also worked in restaurants since she was 15, but was a stay at home mom. At the time David worked for an upscale dinner house. They had a hard time finding a restaurant that offered fresh food, yet was casual enough to bring their children. They dreamed of owning a family style restaurant where they could get fresh home made food at an affordable price. The opportunity arose and they bought their first restaurant on North Main Street in Walnut Creek. From there they expanded into 5 locations in the Bay Area. David has always run the business side of the restaurant while Debbie, with her love of cooking, focuses on the food, recipes and menu development. Today you can find David, Debbie, and their three children working. Buttercup has truly become a family restaurant.

On an ordinary Thursday, there were multiple groups waiting outside for the restaurant to open at 11:30 AM. That in itself should tell you how popular this place is. My wife and I dined at sister restaurant Southie next door a few years ago and really enjoyed it (I also rated it five stars on Yelp), so I was confident Wood Tavern would not disappoint. I initially booked our reservation using OpenTable to link it to my account and get 100 points. Since the max party size for Wood Tavern on OpenTable is four, I had to call to get it changed to eight. Due to the large party size, the restaurant also required me to give them my credit card info and be subject to a $25 per person no-show fee. Upon arrival, our tables were ready for us in the back corner near the open kitchen. The restaurant is true to its name with a shared bar and dining room space that evoke the feel of a wood tavern. Low and behold my soup arrives with a side of bacon. I then explained again what I ordered. A few moments pass and he comes back and then my husband explains what I wanted. The waiter never came back to check on us. The manager hovered by for a while but we had to even flag him down for the check. I left hungry and got a meal at the airport. Would not recommend. I'm not a crank and I'm not in the habit of writing bad reviews. I can count on one hand (with a couple fingers left over) the number of times I've left a negative Yelp review in my life. But this place was that bad. I ordered one of their specialty cheese burgers. It was virtually inedible. The meat patty was beyond well done! It was like someone left it on the grill and forgot about it, then came back to a burnt, pulverized, utterly dried out hamburger and decided to serve it anyway. It's amazing to me that food professionals would serve something so bad to a paying customer. You could see at a glance (by the cook or server or both) that the burger was ruined. Today I decided to try again but at another Buttercup Site. Today I went to the Oakland site on Broadway. I couldn't decide what to have but I ended up choosing the Florentine Omelette, it has spinach, bacon, Jack cheddar cheese and I had ham added too with a sauce that is used to cover the Omelette. The omelette was very delicious! The service was amazing during this visit. The front end made an impressive first impression. They were very welcoming, very attentive to each of their customers and overall very kind to both customers and staff members. Cute diner between Jack London square and downtown Oakland. I got the grilled Ruben sandwich which comes with coleslaw, potato salad and a dill pickle. This was a lot of food! I ate a little more than half the sandwich and all the sides and got stuffed. You definitely get your money's worth here. I wasn't expecting much since it's diner food and this place delivered. The sandwich was hearty and the potato salad and coleslaw had good flavors. It's similar to a Denny's and has breakfast served all day. Good service and clean, and has a friendly atmosphere. If you come here you gotta try their garlic bread. It is awesome and delicious. They put a big garlic in the middle of the bread, which brings out incredible flavor. It is definitely amazing and it looks like an expensive $30 bread that some restaurants in SF would get away with selling. In addition, the times we have come here we have asked for their steak and the size of the portions is really good. They also have other typical breakfast and lunch plates but we have not tried much. A very good breakfast spot located in a much more dangerous than average area. I do not recommend driving your vehicle and parking in their lot. By reading reviews, you will see people saying take your valuables and lock your car. This will not deter the smash and grab thieves who will break your vehicle glass to open any concealed storage areas. Best bet is to take a ride share service to this location. The restaurant food and service shine particularly for an early morning breakfast. Definitely worth a stop if in the area. read more

However, I was just making a call outside the bathrooms and witnessed a bald-headed jerk, who I assume is the manager with his strut and bossy air of authority, violently banging on the women's public bathroom.I don't care what his problem was. That's not ok and it ruined my mood. You can't invade and disrespect someone's space in the bathroom. I hope the owners fire him. Nothing I hate more than a jerk boss.
