Irish coffee
Mindy L.

Do yourself a favor and get the churro waffle and Irish coffee!! The indulgence is worth it I promise. The waffle is everything you wish a funnel cake would live up to. So crispy and delicious with the cinnamon sugar coating. Nice diner setting and a small parking lot/street parking right near Jack London Square

I had to take a moment to share such a wonderful experience. After chaperoning my kids at prom and navigating a stressful, rainy drive back toward Oakland from the Chabot Space Center--dealing with flooding, accidents, and getting completely turned around--I decided I deserved a little dessert (and a drink ). I showed up just five minutes before closing, and honestly expected to feel like a burden--but instead, I was greeted by Joe, who welcomed me with the warmest smile and such a genuinely kind demeanor. Not once did he make me feel rushed. I had heard the bread pudding was amazing, and wow--it absolutely lived up to the hype. Paired with a perfectly made margarita, it was exactly what I needed to unwind. Joe even took the time to ask how I liked my margarita--weak, regular, or strong (he must've seen the stress on my face! ). His attentiveness and friendliness really stood out. We got to chatting, and he mentioned he works in Vallejo on Wednesdays--safe to say, I'll definitely be making a visit out there to see him again! Joe left such a lasting impression on this tired, stressed-out mama. His kindness, patience, and hospitality truly turned my whole night around. Just a reminder that compassion and great service always make a difference. Thank you, Joe!

The good stuff Breakfast

The P is for pie, but today I chose the C for coffee & coffee cake. I was warned by my hotel that the portions are huge and one leaves here with a to-go box and in a diabetic coma. I chose a lite breakfast of scrambled egg-whites, a turkey patty, and fresh fruit. Made my own vanilla flavored coffee. My server brought me vanilla syrup in a glass, a mini-bowl full of half-n-half creamer and I doctored my coffee to my liking. Hey it worked. To avoid spilling the syrup everywhere, pour the syrup over the back of a spoon in the coffee cup. Voila no mess. My breakfast was good. The place was packed. Had a family with two of the most Hyper-ADHD kids in the place invading my personal space, bumping the feet against the booth, to laying down on the booth, and bursting out with a 'Yah-ooooo' while his Das tried to have adult conversation with his friends. I tell ya, that man has his hands full. Next my coffee cake arrived. Wow, humongous piece. I only took a couple of bites and sat and enjoyed my coffee while I was thinking of my review. A greasy spoon this is, but this is the spot in Oakland. Ok so the family leaves and here comes the busboy, clinging, clanging, the dishes, silverware in the black bin so loud that I looked up from my phone & saw others look his way. I paused and asked him, 'Are you mad today?' He smiled and said No. I think he got the hint and became quieter. Sometimes people are just not aware. No merch today. I know I'll be back. They have plenty of options and a bar. Until next time Oakland, see you on Yelp

Prime Rib $30.99 not bad!
Tommy R.

Service was great. No complaints. Prime rib was actually pretty good considering it cost $30.99 and it came with a side salad. Definitely would come back again since I work down the street at the port.

My first time dining here, and it was truly wonderful. I sat at the counter and was followed over by the host with a menu -- no wait time at all. The diner is clean, cozy, and chic. The staff is warm and inviting. The portion sizes are HUGE, so my only regret is that I didn't have a buddy with me to split all of this food with. I went for the classic eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, and toast combo. I asked for my bacon well / crispy and it came out perfect -- shoutout to the kitchen for a delicious breakfast. The Jessica's Coffee Cake was the perfect "something sweet" to end the meal with, but fair warning, this is not the size you usually get from say a Starbucks -- you could feed a family with this thing. I'll be back. Thanks for a memorable breakfast, Buttercup staff.

This is going to Always be the spot! This will Always be the favorite! Good food ! Good Service! Good Ambiance!

Eggs Benedict

Decided to get breakfast while my car was charging. Ordered Eggs Benedict with my eggs poached medium. I told the waitress I wanted my eggs really cooked and I heard her say it into whatever device she takes orders on. When my plate arrived the eggs were barely cooked. The English muffin was soggy and the hollandaise sauce was horrible--heavy, salty, and grainy. Maybe other food is good here but I don't recommend the Eggs Benedict!

Shrimp and Shrimp N Grits
Danielle M.

Went for the shrimp and grits based on the recommendation here. I was disappointed. As a POC I thought they would taste like southern shrimp and grits, especially being in Oakland, but they don't. The grits are undercooked and lumpy, the shrimp is breaded and gets soggy in all that liquid and veggies, the overall taste was just meh. I wish I had ordered something else. The atmosphere and other food looked amazing. I saw the omelettes, waffles, fried chicken and other food that looked amazing. Service was great as well. I will be back but I will order something else next time.

Stopped in today after a Black History celebration during this month got my egg scramble was very delicious thanksfor good food

Churro waffles
Emanuel L.

Took the crew out for brunch for Xmas. It was a nice get together. I didn't get a pic of the mozzarella sticks but they were 5outta5. Nice size, crisp & very cheesy! Churro waffles - Crew member said they were good! Veggie omelette- Crew member really enjoyed the dish. Loaded potatoes - 4.5outta5 a lil too much cheese but delicious otherwise Shrimp & Grits 4outta5 Didn't care for the clumps of grits & although the sauce was delicious, there was a tad too much of it. Good seasoning, shrimp cooked perfectly & I enjoyed the dish. Nice atmosphere, attentive service; We all enjoyed the experience.

I visited Horn Barbecue and I NEED management and ownership to read this carefully--because what I…read moreexperienced deserves to be recognized on a higher level. First of all, my order was TO-GO. And let me tell you... when I got home and opened that bag, I was honestly blown away. My food was packaged with so much care, precision, and pride--it was neat, organized, and handled like it actually mattered. That alone told me everything about the level of service in that building. Candalen--YOU DID THAT. The attention to detail on my plate did not go unnoticed. You treated my food like it was being served in-house, and that speaks volumes about your work ethic and pride in what you do. Aaron--listen... that peach lemon drop??? BABY. That was my first time trying one and it was EVERYTHING. Smooth, flavorful, perfectly balanced--you made that drink an experience all by itself. I will be back JUST for that. And let's talk about the vibe--the music, the energy, the atmosphere--it all came together in a way that made the entire visit feel GOOD. Not just food... a whole experience. But what really stands out is this: It has been a LONG time since I've experienced service this genuine, this intentional, and this excellent. Not rushed, not careless--EXCEPTIONAL. Management, if you are reading this--please understand--you have some powerful people on your team. Candalen and Aaron are the kind of employees that elevate a brand. They are the reason people come back. They are the reason I will be telling others. This wasn't just a good experience. This was the kind of experience that turns customers into loyal supporters. I will absolutely be back--and I will be bringing people with me. Until next time, WUHAPN NATION

Finally, we were so excited to see it was open on a Saturday an we came in for lunch. To order you need to scan the QR code and pay plus tip before a single person spoke to us or offered us service. From the menu we saw they were out of beef ribs, smoked chicken, rib tips, no peach cobbler, no banana pudding and no kool aid. I come for their brisket and my friend loves ribs so we went ahead and ordered combo plates to share. Mine was the brisket with a side of collard greens, she had the pork ribs, a hotlink with a side of Mac-n-cheese, & cornbread. For drinks we had lemonade and an Arnold Palmer. I'm not sure what has happened over the last few months but the quality of the food, the service and the expectation to pay and tip up front were very disappointing. The greens, Mac cheese, brisket and ribs were cold. The hotlink wasn't BBQ'ed it was pan fried. Everything tasted like warmed up leftovers and we will not return. For 2 of us to eat it came to $100 and we were not satisfied. The dining room is an attractive space, it was completely empty. The staff was unclear about what we ordered, had to be told to bring our drinks, bartender is also working as server and apologized for his uncertainty. I suggest this restaurant hire and train more staff if they intend to keep their doors open.

I ordered the turkey club and it was honestly huge. You can see in the photo how big it is compared to my hand. It was stacked and super satisfying, the kind of sandwich that definitely fills you up. We also shared a deviled egg and some fried zucchini to start, which were great little bites before the main dish. The zucchini was crispy and light, and the deviled egg was simple but really good. I paired everything with a mocha latte that was perfectly balanced and honestly superb. Overall it was a ten out of ten brunch moment. Between the sunny weather, good coffee, and really satisfying food, it was exactly what we were looking for. Definitely one of those spots I would come back to for brunch again.

Unfortunately considering this experience my husband doesn't want to go back and I hate that for us because the food was really good.

I have been here so many times so I'm surprised I haven't written a review yet…read more This place is quite a quintessential restaurant to eat at in Oakland Chinatown. They are open late and have plenty of seating and a huge menu to select everything you'd want. This time around we got mixed fruits in a crepe, strawberry ice cream with an eggette, ovaltine, milk tea and a baked chicken and rice to go for tomorrow's lunch. The desserts were decent and tasted like what you'd think they'd taste like. The drinks were soothing and the baked chicken and rice was the star of the show. It was savory with every grain of rice not going to waste with how delicious it is and the chicken was oh so, tender. The baked rice dishes are where they're at. The duck roll was also perfection. The duck was tender and the roll was crispy and chewy. Yummy! They have a $10 minimum spend per person so plan accordingly!

I've gotten orders to go from here for 5 years plus. I started with the rice plates (mediocre, like I said quick bite) then I found their appetizer duck rolls (the ish)! I ordered them for every meal after that. Then I found they had a delicious coffee and tea combo (I thought I was the only one doing that...lol)! Once again delicious every time. At first I thought it only came in one size (large cup) then one day I ordered and then person gave me a small cup and I didn't remember if they charged me the same. Then I went back again and said large cup and they seemed surprised I even knew there was a difference (that was weird AF...like you know what weird). So I l've spent some time now saying Large cup and hopefully will continue. The issue is now that the last time I ordered my delicious duck rolls and a coffee and tea combo, my coffee came hot and wonderful (almost too hot) and my ducks rolls came cold! Literally like it came from thawing and they forgot to "cook it!" Ugg ewwwwwww I ended it microwaving one and eating it that night. My plan had been to eat one night and save the other anyway. Ended up heating up the other one a couple days later on my stove top. I love cooking so this wasn't a huge issue, but wow what a serious mistake! Or was it...? Idk at this point. I give restaurants 3 chances especially when they're doing at least two items correctly. This restaurant is one of the busiest in downtown Oakland and I commend them for being around this long and servicing both China Town and the rest of Oakland. Will be back, just thought yall should know! Until next time!

A fantastic, unfussy, charming wedding reception venue for a smaller wedding group…read more My now-spouse and I had been struggling to find a good covered outdoor wedding reception venue that fit our budget, allowed external catering, and was small enough for the 50-ish guests we were expecting -- it seemed like every "wedding venue" felt overly fancy and was better suited to a 100+ person group. But then we found Portal! We're not fussy people, and we loved the more down-to-earth vibe of their patio. Plus, it's got heaters and an extendable cover, which was exactly what we wanted! The previous owner, Kevyn, was great to work with, as was the current owner, Mona. We decided to rent the patio and have Portal provide drink service and dishes, but we knew that we wanted a specific restaurant (which doesn't have its own seating area) to provide the food. Kevyn and Mona were both totally down for that, and completely helped us bring our vision to life. There was space for our 50 guests to sit, for the buffet, plus enough space left over for a small dance floor area. Really perfect for our group. Amber, their bartender and events coordinator, deserves a particular shout-out. She worked with my spouse and me to come up with three custom mocktails that fit our taste preferences and even thought of cute love-themed names for all of them! She really went above and beyond for it, having a mocktail tasting for us and even sourcing a non-alcoholic champagne to use for n/a mimosas and in one of the mocktails. It was a wonderful experience, and Amber was a joy to work with. She the one making the mocktails (and alcoholic drinks for guests who wanted them) during the reception, and we heard constant compliments.
