The Food has always been on point for me. The Service of the waitress Mikayla and Perla were super helpful and professional and very attentive. The ambiance is family friendly and I love the fact that they have t.v's there because when it's football or basketball season it's always nice to be able to sit down and watch while having super good grub. My kids have played in AAU basketball tournaments at Open Premier gym so when there is a big hour of gaps of time to eat lunch we go here to eat. Went to the Buttercup for the first time in 25 years. We were staying at the Marriott City Center and was thinking about where to go eat Breakfast the next day. I remembered the Buttercup as I looked at Yelp and was amazed and glad it was still open and survived the pandemic. Me and my Bro in Law walked about 6-7 blocks to the restaurant. I did have some thoughts about walking the streets of Oakland being so close to the Oakland Police Department and crime in the area. I took off my Rollie and left cash in my hotel room as a second thought and walked to the restaurant. No one on the street at 8am Saturday and it was actually nice no vagrants or homeless people in the streets! We were greeted at the entrance and the restaurant was very busy. I saw 4 OPD officers leaving and figured that's a good sign! I ordered a Florentine Omelette filled with spinach and cheese topped with Hollandaise sauce and was absolutely delicious! My Bro in Law had Shrimp and Grits and since he was hungry ordered three fried eggs as well. The shrimp and Grits was a big bowl and looked delicious. So much so Bro could not eat the eggs as he was stuffed! Next time in Oakland will definitely go back ! read more

My favorite diner style restaurant! Every time I visit I have a delicious meal or dessert and have recently tried the drinks ! I met my friends for a little brunch reunion and had a lovely time. I got chicken and waffles with two side eggs, sausage links, and a mimosa was absolutely tasty! My little sister had the chicken wings and fries and love them! Was looking for a breakfast restaurant as I left a friend off at Amtrak station in Jack London Square. As I was driving towards Broadway to go to Downtown I noticed Buttercup on the opposite side. While the parking lot was almost full at 8:45 am there was plenty of off street parking. I circle around found a space in the parking lot. As I entered I was immediately welcomed by Waitress Micky who walked me to a booth. She asked if I wanted coffee and said yes. I knew what I wanted which pancakes and added scrambled eggs, hash browns and 2 pieces of bacon. Within 10-15 minutes I had my breakfast. We all went out for a work brunch when I was visiting. The restaurant is conveniently located close to Jack London Square, and it was easy to get into and find parking. I got the corned beef hash after the waitress assured me that they make it in-house- no canned hash for me! It was good, but truthfully I regret not getting the shrimp and grits because holy hell was the bite I tried GOOD. Everyone else was happy with their food, and the sides like the plain grits were perfect. I mean, look at that butter melting into those grits! Everything about this diner feels classic- from the homemade pies to the giant portion sizes to the friendly waitress offering you an endless stream of coffee. Great setting, they were easy to serve us and kindly tended to our needs. I think anybody can show up here expecting open arms and accommodations to any group of people large or small. The food arrived pretty quickly, and the waitress was nice. I got the French toast with a side of eggs and bacon. The bacon and eggs were ok but the French toast was EXQUISITE. For desert I got the chocolate cream pie, very filling and rich and the crust had a pleasant snap that pulled it together. Overall great experience. I am on the email list for Buttercup Grill. They were closed for about a month and a half due to COVID-19. On April 30, 2020 I received an email that they were opening Sunday, May 3, for take out or delivery by Door Dash. I checked their website to see what they had on the menu. I did not see my favorite breakfast item on the menu. Hmmm...no huevos rancheros? I did see grilled pork chops with two eggs (choice of style), hash browns and toast. How I miss the huevos rancheros! In the past when my husband and I ordered breakfast, I seem to order the huevos rancheros 75% of the time. I never get tire of it. I called them Sunday morning to order breakfast. An employee named Vicky answered the phone. I asked her if they have huevos rancheros. Her reply was they could prepare it without the ranchero sauce. Okay, I will take it with salsa. My husband wanted the pork chop breakfast plus two orders of grits. I was so excited that I forgot to tell Vicky I wanted hash brown. I had to call back to have them add the hash brown. We stopped by about 9:30 AM to pick up our breakfast. They had our order ready when we arrived. Total: $40.93. Vicky was very helpful and pleasant that I left her an $8.00 tip. As always, breakfast was delicious and filling. I am glad they are open for take outs and delivery. If I don't feel like cooking breakfast, my husband and I will be visiting Buttercup Grill near Jack London Square. read more

We have our service dog with us, so out of respect prior to bringing him inside, my husband asked them if it was ok to have him inside with us. They said it was just fine. We were sat at our table, our dog (as always) sniffed around for a second and laid down calmly next to us. After we put in our order, there was a small kid a few tables over that screamed and started waving his arms toward our table. Our dog then barked twice and laid back down. The family apologized because their son had been misbehaving and they even said "that was our fault, we're sorry" Then a man came over to us in a very confrontational, rude, manner and said "you guys can't have your dog in here if he barks even if he's a service dog." I said, "we apologize, he normally doesn't bark but I can assure it shouldn't happen again. If so, we'll leave." He then said "this poor kid is scared because of him" and the parent immediately stepped in and said "my kid isn't scared. He's the one who instigated it." And he (Jonathan) shrugged his shoulders and walked away. What kind of customer service is that? Is that how they treat people around here? He made us feel very uncomfortable. We would have left, but we aren't familiar with the area. Food came out fast and tasted great. Server (Virginia) was very friendly and attentive. Fruit sides are very fresh and their hash browns are pretty crispy. Service is reliable and friendly and there is parking just outside. Update...service could be friendlier on weekdays. A little warmth is all that's needed. In other places I go a simple smile goes a long way. Even when I paid the bill. It was rang up and then I was completely ignored in a loud unwelcoming way. Very cold and unfriendly. Instead of a welcome when I walked in, it was an order to show my proof a vaccination. The experience was negative. A solid spot for quality diner fare in Oakland. I tend to frequent the Walnut Creek location most often, but this location in Jack London Square is a prime spot for great diner food in the area. Most people tend to rave about Buttercup's breakfast which I also adore, but I'm actually a HUGE fan of their dinner menu. It's just friggin' bombtastic! It's like diner fare on steroids. First of all, I can never get enough of their warm bread and butter, and their house SALAD. Ugh! So addictive. I always get that salad with every entree. And, I always ask for the bread too because I'm a straight up carboholic! I'm in love with their fish entrees here. Fish? From a diner? Trust me. It's DELISH! Their pan seared salmon is my favorite but I also really like their blackened salmon too. They usually have seasonal dishes here and I always love trying their seasonal fish menu items. I can't forget to mention their pies. BANANA CREAM PIE all day, everyday!! It's my absolute favorite and they make it sooo good here! I can't resist having a slice when I come here. It's simply amazing. The service has always been on point and the other patrons are always really friendly. This is definitely a local's joint.
