Not the traditional omakase experience where we get served one piece at a time directly from the chef, but rather multiple pieces at a time to the table. It's a small and intimate atmosphere but still feels refined and elevated. Tried "The One", which was surprisingly filling! You could tell their fish is high quality by the flavor and texture. We loved every single bite and would definitely return.

Is it possible to give this 10 stars? Because that was my experience on MOTHER'S DAY. First time coming here and it's been on my Yelp list for so long that I'm so happy I made myself the time to come here with a cousin! I made reservations about 2 weeks in advanced for 12pm and we lucked out with NJ weather and sat outside on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Because it was Mother's Day, they had 2 set omakase experiences to choose from. We decided to splurge and did the chef tasting. I couldn't even tell you everything I put in my mouth, but just know everything was SO fresh that the fish melted in your mouth. The owner Jo Jo came out to greet us, explained the menu to us, and even acknowledged the fact that the music outdoors was way too loud and he turned it down. He was extremely friendly and personable along with the rest of the waitstaff. The service could not have been any better. The sushi was SO fresh I literally could've eaten 50 more pieces if I didn't do dinner that night. I'm so happy that I was able to experience the tasting menu and told my husband we have to come back. The setting was intimate and small and it just had such a good vibe. Being outdoors on a beautiful day was a nice surprise. I can't say enough nice things about this place and the staff and the FOOD. I highly recommend Butterfish. Just make the reservation. You won't regret it.

I say this full heartedly; Butterfish provided one of the best nights of my life!!! From the warm hearted service to the melt-in-your-mouth omakase experience - it was truly divine! The restaurant feels almost like a hidden gem, as it is rather unsuspecting from the street, then shocks you with a gorgeous experience the moment you walk in the door. The entire staff treated us with such warm hospitality and generosity throughout the entire meal- though the highlight of our night was our incredible server, Jenna! She was wonderfully professional and so so kind, taking excellent care of us throughout! We also had lovely service from Fredo who skillfully explained every dish, had a lovely interaction with the manager Jojo, and even had a chance to speak to the chef who came to check on our meal! The quality of the sushi itself was absolutely unbelievable. As a food lover and world traveler, I was shocked by getting to experience some the most fresh, delicious, quality seafood I have ever tasted!! I simply will never be able to capture how much we loved our experience in words- all I can say is if you are considering going- GO!!! Thank you Butterfish for a meal we will never forget!!

Beautiful place, as soon as I got there I was impressed with the decor and how the ambiance made us feel welcoming!!! Service was on point, they did explain everything when serving the food. Sushi was impeccable!!!! Everything fresh, tasty and memorable, can't wait to come back!!! We did the premium menu if I am not mistaken, and is totally worth it!!! For desert they did a complimentary gelato chef selection that was the cherry on top on our experience, thank you for everything!

Very popular and on many "Best of" sushi lists so you MUST make reservations weeks in advance. We saw a "walk-in" turned away on a busy Friday night. It's on a hard to park side street but a public garage is only 1 block away. BYOB. As tiny as this restaurant it is huge on staff\service and has a great vibe. Staff is very friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. Their specialty is Omakase ( chef's choice) sushi dinners. We all had the premium which had a three Apps, two handrolls, and 12 pieces of sushi. Very filling. I highly recommend the miso glazed black cod which is amazing. Cooked to perfection. Delicate yet full of flavor. Between the food, presentation, and stellar service... If you're a real "sushi-head" or want a place to start out with truly fresh, authentic sushi, then this is the place.

The omakase experience is a must here. Forget ordering separate rolls, this is what they are known for. BYO so don't forget to bring a bottle of your favorite wine. The menu has been curated by Michelin star chefs, and the food reflected that. Expertly crafted rolls and flawless execution, you won't be disappointed. Service was spectacular. They asked at first if there were any allergies and from the on plate after plate of deliciousness. Their servers explained every roll and its ingredients. My favorite was a foie gras roll. I know... sounds weird right but this was an absolute banger. Dessert? Went for a black seasame Gelato and boy it was an absolute closer to a phenomenal meal. Trendy and hip, this place is perfect for a date night.

This was a surprisingly disappointing experience. While the fish was fresh and reasonably good, it did not justify the premium price point nor did it live up to the hype surrounding the restaurant. The biggest issue was the atmosphere. The tables were packed so tightly together that extending your arm could easily put you in someone else's space. The dining room felt cramped and uncomfortable and there was little sense of privacy; I felt as though nearby guests could hear every conversation. For a restaurant positioning itself as a high-end dining destination, the experience felt far from luxurious. I will say that the service was excellent and the staff were attentive and professional throughout the meal. Unfortunately, great service alone could not make up for an underwhelming overall experience. Between the crowded seating arrangement and food that failed to justify the cost, I have no plans to return.

Came on NYE and had their omakase experience menu. This really made the ordering process easy and allowed us to try a variety of menu items. Food was absolutely amazing, every dish paired nicely. They also allow BYOB. The only downsides I found was: Extremely small restaurant with tables very close to each other. Payment and tip on handheld device, selected 20% tip but device charged 22% anyways.. not sure if this is a scam but there was no way to change or revert the charge and it did not show the total you were paying until after the charge went through on the card. (Also no receipt)

Found a hidden gem. We made reservations in this cozy restaurant where the menu is curated by Michelin Starred chefs. The minute we stepped through their doors, we were warmly greeted by the entire staff. Upon being seated right away, we noticed the intimate atmosphere. They maximize every square space of it. Upon perusal we all decided on "The One" omakase. This omakase consisted of 2 appetizers, an eight (8) piece tray of incredible sushi, and two hand rolls. Everything was made to perfection. One of the highlights was the appetizer, Butterfish Spoon, which has three different fishes paired with a ponzu drizzle on a delicate wafer bowl. Outrageously delicious. This appetizer was not part of their "The One." Their menu and service were top notch. They constantly came over to ensure you had everything and ensured your cups were always filled. I highly recommend.

Excellent quality sushi, warm and friendly service and vibe. We usually go to into the city for sushi but no longer need to as Butterfish had amazing, high quality, fresh and delicious sushi. Favorites, were the foie gras unagi hand roll, blue crab and wagyu hand roll, salmon burrata, foie gras eel sushi. All absolutely delicious! Will definitely be back! We were in town for the Westminster dog show and looking for good sushi. We absolutely found it at Butterfish. No "stunt sushi" here... fresh, exceptional quality seafood prepared simply but elegantly and with respect for the ingredients. Service was good. Ambiance/vibe was also pretty solid. The fish on sushi was fresh too. The sushi rice tho, was mushy and wet. Almost inedible. I ate it but my wife left it on the plate and had "sashimi". Also the chopped toro in the butterfish spoon & toro hand roll was very icy. Had tiny shards of ice. Tried Butterfish for the first time with 2 friends and it totally lived up to the hype! We each had a different one of the 3 mocktails (we brought our own airplane bottles to mix in); we started with the cucumber chili crunch salad; then we each had a different omakase (The One, The Signature, The Premium). The fish was really fresh and high quality as all the reviews say. And because it was my birthday, they gave us 3 gelato sandwiches (salted caramel, chocolate, and lime) which were a great way to end the meal. All of the staff were very attentive from the person who greeted us, our waiter Ryan, the server who brought our food, the busboy who cleared our plates, and JoJo the manager. Simply put: outstanding sushi. And this is just from having their takeout. If the takeout is this amazing--well my only regret is we didn't get to visit in person. If you're reading this and thinking about eating here--then don't wait another second, just do it. We're visiting from LA and eat sushi fairly regularly back home. Both my wife and myself remarked that delivery from our sushi spot (a well regarded one) hasn't been this good in a while. Maybe our back home spot has gotten too comfortable.... (Are you reading this Butterfish??) Everything in our omakase boxes had the texture, taste, and delicacy you come to expect from an in-person dining experience. I mean exquisite. Even the wasabi--I don't know what they're doing with the wasabi but I need this back home. I need this sushi back home. We both had the One Omakase Experience for reference. And we also experienced tbe Salmon Burrata--with the different flavor profiles coming together when this hits your palate - out of this world. I can't say enough good things about this place. I'm only sorry I probably won't be able to sample it again before going back west. Also special props to the management and staff who go out of their way for the customers. Late dinner craving and found this spot. Place is beautiful inside, gives you that intimate and cozy vibe. Food is amazing! We had the signature omasake. We met the manager who is so welcoming, and even whipped us with one of his signature dish. Best sushi resto by far in my opinion. A bit pricey but worth every $. Hands down the best sushi I've ever had! I love traveling to NY for sushi, but nothing compares to this. This LA Michelin-starred chef has truly outdone themselves--every bite was pure perfection. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance struck the perfect balance between cozy, relaxing, and fun. Dropping one star after dining tonight as a group of 6. We had to wait outside half an hour for our table to be ready. The manager apologized for the delay and threw in a round of ice cream at the end. Food was still delicious but took a much longer time to arrive and our service regarding glass refills, ginger, etc. was not near as good as the last time. I would return but only as the two of us and will try somewhere else first as this experience was a little off-putting. read more

I literally stumbled upon this place on their first day opened to the public with my girlfriend and they took us as a walk in. The space is small but the design is really nice. The artwork is so cool. The food was the best sushi I've ever had in NJ. I can't believe this is in Rutherford. Amazing. Staff was great too. As for the food--everything was drowned in sauces to the point where you couldn't even taste the fish. No no guys, no no. Went last night and was highly disappointed. The decor and staff were top notch. They truly care about every table and try hard. The tables are way too close together. The waiters can't get between them and to get to a booth seat your butt basically goes over the next table. Overall the service was wonderful, but minus the salmon crudo appetizer and the edamame the wonder stopped there. We did the premium omakase and every bite except 1-2 were disappointing. The fish was tasteless for the majority, over sauced on pieces with sauce and tangy on random ones. I've heard nothing but great things and was so excited to go, but we will not be going back. I was quite disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. The prices are high, but the food didn't live up to expectations, especially the uni, which was not fresh and tasted off. Although they did replace the ice cream, it didn't make up for the overall poor quality. I originally planned to bring my friends here for a birthday celebration, but I've changed my mind. I don't think my friends or anyone I know should have to go through the same experience. I forgot to take a photo of the uni in the omakase, but I started feeling something was off since the appetizers. Amazing food and out standing service! Dined with my best friend last night and had a perfect experience! Our go to us sushi on any price range and we both agreed that Butterfish out ranked Nobu or Lure. We shared the cucumber salad, salmon burrata, edamame and random hand rolls. First off... ORDER the salmon burrata and cucumber salad! We were raving about both of those dishes even after we left! All of the fish is fresh tasting and well portioned! We finished off our meal with salted caramel gelato, which was also to die for! I recommend bringing hard liquor to try in their two mocktails! Overall cannot wait to come back!!! read more

When I heard the team from Iki Nori in Los Angeles was working on a project in New Jersey, I knew I had to make the trek from Brooklyn to check it out. Let me tell you--it was absolutely worth every minute of the journey. Now I understand why they call it butterfish... each bite melts in your mouth. The scallop and toro handrolls are completely addictive. The last time I had sushi this good was back in Japan. I hate that I have to cross the river from NY to NJ for this, but it's hands down the best sushi within a 100-mile radius. The space is small but stunning. I had the pleasure of having dinner here last night. I usually end up going to the city for sugarfish. This is by far superior (and closer). In my opinion this is the best sushi if New Jersey. I had the toro handroll with my set order and it was so good I had to order another one. The fish is super fresh and the staff was super friendly.
