I had the Signature Omakase (12 pieces, 2 hand rolls, and 2 appetizers), and it was a fantastic experience. The fish cuts were incredibly fresh, beautifully presented, and clearly high quality. The service was attentive and welcoming throughout the meal, which made the dining experience even more enjoyable. One thing to note: they don't add wasabi to the fish, so you'll need to add it yourself after it's served. That said, they do provide fresh wasabi, which is a nice touch and shows their commitment to quality ingredients. Part 1 My reservation was canceled by the restaurant without any explanation. I received no text or email--only an automated cancellation notification. I have never experienced anything like this. Is this really how you treat your customers? Unbelievable! Part 2 - If a reservation must be canceled, basic courtesy would be to contact the customer first by phone, text, or email--especially before canceling it outright. I was not rude in my review; I simply described exactly what happened. What I do find inappropriate is receiving a phone call at 11:33 PM and a text again at 7:00 AM demanding that I delete my review. This is such an elevated experience that I highly highly recommend if you love omakase type sushi. I've been wanting to go since it opened and It was definitely worth the wait. The staff were very friendly and attentive, explaining the menu thoroughly and each dish. I ended up going for the premium which included 3 apps, 12 sushi, and 2 handroll. It's BYOB but I just wanted a mocktail and I chose the Japanese cherry blossom. It was a good mix between the tart cherry and lychee but a tad sweet. Every part of the premium was amazing. The stand outs were definitely the salmon burrata with the truffle honey, the toro, salmon truffle and uni. Each roll melted in your mouth and was beautifully crafted with flavor. It's definitely worth it in my opinion. We ended our meal with a pistachio gelato and a lemon/mint sorbet. That pistachio gelato I still dream of but too bad they couldn't let me know where they get it from. Definitely recommend this place for a great meal! read more

Second time back and everything was just as incredible, if not even better than our first time there. Butterfish is a special experience from food to service. We tried the yellowtail ceviche and scallop carpaccio as appetizers this time and both were delicious. We enjoyed the ceviche slightly more, it had amazing acidity. My husband and I went to Butterfish for my birthday, and it was such an awesome experience. The atmosphere is unique and intimate. The staff is super friendly, knowledgeable, and it's clear they take great care in preparing the menu and dishes. Every detail was polished with perfection. Just a few examples: the fish is flown in daily from Japan and you can taste the quality. The waitress and runners gave us a full explanation of each piece and how they were prepared. The drinks were beautifully mixed, and they trimmed fresh flowers for a garnish. It was so nice to finally find a restaurant with amazing mocktails- my favorite was the Jackfruit, and my husband liked the cherry blossom and how it complemented the dishes. The food was, honestly, the best meal we've had in years, and I instantly felt like I'd been swept away on vacation. JoJo, the general manager, was passionate about the menu and it was a great pleasure to be in the presence of someone who truly loves what he does and is dedicated to making the night special for you. I even forgot my phone at the end of the night, and he tracked me down to return it! Whatever you do- don't skip dessert! The gelato and sorbet were stellar. An artesian flavor in each, such that the last time we had comparable flavor was in Bari, Italy. We've recounted our experience here a multitude of times to others since we went. My experience differs from others unfortunately. Don't get me wrong, the food was really good. Was it the best sushi I have ever had in my life? No, but it is up there. It is certainly the best sushi in New Jersey that I know of. The major props I have to give to the chef is that I have NEVER EVER liked Uni in the past but somehow, whatever they used and/or prepared it, was actually palatable. Would I necessarily hunger for it? not really, but I was able to actually eat it and like it, unlike any other time I have had Uni. The ingredients definitely tasted fresh and a lot of the sushi was melt-in-your-mouth kind of awesome. There is no denying that the chefs put in a lot of thought and consideration. However, here are a few reasons as to why I did not have the perfect experience. First, the reservation was not ready when we arrived. Totally forgivable due to the popularity but it just compounds with the others. Our server was, just meh. No names needed but sheesh, it was simply fine. Nothing special. In fact, a lot of stuff was throw at us, orders were demanded extremely quickly, a mess was made any time drinks were dropped off at our table, and we noticed that they were certainly not treating us as well as the couple next to us. The other problem was that every time a dish was dropped off, I could barely hear what the server was saying because they were speaking so softly. I know they are trying to do that whole fine dining thing where they explain what you are getting but it was a try well missed and in dire need of improvement. It didn't even seem like they were sure of what they were serving. The Handroll flight. Ugh! I feel compelled to speak up about this. Was it good? Absolutely. Is it a MUST as other reviews are saying, definitely NOT. In fact, I am willing to bet it was all a gimmick done as a viral promotion. Sort of like, ooo, there is a secret menu. Jojo really sells it but here is the problem I have with it. Since it is a secret item, you do not get a price. They do not TELL you the price when you get it. You have to understand that most of the rolls are basically part of the premium Omakase, at least it was for us. And, it basically costs the SAME as a premium Omakase. So our mistake was getting that as well as the premium omakase. Get one or the other, the premium Omakase probably being the better value. The handroll flight is 89, whereas the premium was 98. I left feeling completely ripped off. It wasn't like the handroll flight was some sort of specific rolls that you couldn't order any where else, so how is that a "Secret". The last negative thing was the Salmon Burrata and the Yellowtail Ceviche. The former being, just so freaking gross. Not only was the salmon bland, to pair it with cheese was just incredibly disappointing. Perhaps this caters more to the Western Clientele? Perhaps I need to get with the times, but I did NOT enjoy it at all. The Ceviche was just fine. Yellowtail in a citrus bath with some seaweed. It was edible. Probably on the lower end of the types of ceviche I have had and absolutely not worth the price. Silly of me to have taken that recommendation from the waiter. Over all a good experience. I didn't feel like there was anything special about the service at all and the servers that I had would be GREAT for a regular restaurant, not from one that is trying to mimic Michelin restaurants. And to be honest, the servers that did not serve my table seemed pretty decent and amicable. I think I just had a bad night for service. Would I recommend this to others? Well, yeah, this is still the best sushi restaurant (in terms of food) that I have experienced in New Jersey. I would just tell them to lower their expectations than what the reviews have been saying. Would I come back? Honestly, not sure. For the price paid, I wish that it was an overall better experience. The thing is, for those prices, i could have been someone who was experiencing fine dining as a treat or as a celebration of some kind, or just splurging for the experience despite being on a fixed budget. Who knows, but who cares? Any one would expect exceptional service but the delivery faltered that night. read more

It is totally on par with NYC restaurants and we cannot wait to come back to have all of their sushi. The highlights were the foie unagi, a5, salmon belly, and tunas. Everything was super fresh and super tasty. The salmon burrata was luscious and divine. The ice cream desserts were omg delicious favs were pistachio, passion fruit, salted caramel nd chocolate. I'm only writing because I promised I would after receiving truly exceptional service from JoJo and his warm, knowledgeable staff. The ambience is cozy and chic with beautiful visuals wherever you look and is perfect for an intimate date, girls night, or dinner out with friends. Intricate artwork on every wall panel and modern furnishings make for gorgeous photos. The servers were so attentive and made sure to time the omakase courses so you didn't feel rushed but also never waited for anything. Food was unbelievably fresh, as in flown in from Japan 6 days a week fresh, and you can absolutely taste the quality and the pride they take in every piece. We ordered the white truffle scallop carpaccio and the flavors were perfect together. Every piece in the "lite" omakase I ordered and the "one" omakase my friend got was perfect and a sushi-lover's dream. Mocktails they offered were so good, we couldn't pick our favorite but if I absolutely had to, it would be the Japanese cherry blossom, though my friend loved the jackfruit pandan delight. We also tried the delicious yuzu and Japanese melon refresher and the glass was so big, 2 people could easily share it - no artificial melon flavor like other melon mocktails/cocktails usually have.
