AHA! Now I know where Misha's gets their crap pastries from! Seriously, I'm not a professional baker, and I do much better at home. I get the impression that much more effort is put into the appearance of the desserts (they ARE visually appealing) here than is put into ingredient selection or technique. Dry muffins, dry cupcakes, under-buttered pastry crust, gummy ganache... I suppose if you didn't know better and liked sweet things for the sake of sweetness, then you'd be fine, but the baking here is sub-par to anyone who's stumbled into Patisserie Poupon or (even) Quotidien. BTW, $3 for a cupcake at Georgetown Cupcake or Baked & Wired is one thing, but they're about 1/2 the size here, which makes them twice as expensive and not nearly as good. This used to be our favorite coffee shop 2 years ago. Time to find a new one. First let me start the bakery goods are really magnificent! However, Buzz has lost its customer support. Last night was painful as we waited over 15 minutes for 1 latte and a mocha only for the guy to forget my small latte. Had to send the drinks back they were not hot. He was painfully slow. There used to be this chaotic organization back behind there where everything just moved in sync. It was a mess last night (like that for the last 2 years) and no one was paying customer attention to you and let you finish your order, they walked away. The peanut butter cookie also used to be a peanut butter cookie...when did you start adding chocolate chips? You also used to really go enjoy the social aspect and have your coffee and chat. Remember human interaction they still do that at coffee shops in Europe. Now it's every man for himself with a laptop plugged in and claiming table real estate for hours on end and us chatters have no place to sit. We wait...we eye ball you...and then have to leave. There should be a limit or a larger "no laptop zone" like there used to be. I have been complaining to my husband each time we go always in protest and finally he got it last night. I said you would have to drag me by my ankles to ever come back unless management changes up back to the coffee shop that it used to be. A place to gather and chat. I keep going here, because I WANT to like it, but it just hasn't happened yet. Overall, it's just really expensive for mediocre coffee and sweets. The cupcakes are pretty good, but get them earlier in the day. On two occasions, we have stopped in after dinner for a cupcake and they have been dried out. The quiche is pretty good, but again, very expensive. The atmosphere is pretty good to sit and read, if you're lucky to come when it's not full and you can select a chair instead of the dilapidated cushions with no support. Disappointing. read more

After a meal at Rustico, we opted to grab some cookies and cupcakes to go. While we didn't stay long, I could tell the atmosphere in the shop was like that of a hip little bakery shop with good coffee and great desserts. They clearly had wi-fi and there appeared to be many regulars. We got a couple cupcakes that were delicious, especially the bumble bee which had a chocolate center around a vanilla cake. Buzz Bakeshop, particularly manager Catherine should be recognized for her demonstration of such professionalism and customer service that has rarely been seen by myself or my family. Ordered a cake for my daughter's 21st birthday and due to an unforeseen error, Catherine went beyond what could have ever been expected and did not settle until all was right. She realized the importance of such a celebration and delivered a cake that was better than what was expected . My daughter thought it was :... the most beautiful succulent decorated cake she had ever seen!" My other daughter's 21st birthday also previously from Buzz was just as special, but because of the efforts of Catherine and the beautiful cake she created, we will never forget this particular birthday! This bakery is off the beaten path of old towne in a newer area and a bit hard to find but definitely worth it. They have a relaxed feel with lots of folks working on laptops and chatting. Lots of space inside and out. They have a little kids kitchen play thing as well as board games for the adults if you get bored. The coffee drinks are very reasonably priced and have always been made perfectly and quickly. They even have liquour for different interesting options as well as craft beer. Food-wise they stand apart. Tons of interesting muffins and cakes and pastries. Some are healthy, some decadent, some unique, all delicious. Hey even have 5-6 different kinds of amazing quiche. Lots of snacks and things to take home as well. Staff is always friendly and always lots of them serving and cooking. read more

Even if there were no cupcakes, this place would still get 4 stars from me due to its sheer eclectic nature. Buzz is decorated in lime green and bright pink and includes vegan foods, margaritas, dog treats, and a children's play kitchen set! I've ordered cupcakes and coffee here and thoroughly enjoyed the icing, even though the cake part was a tad dry. The coffee (white mocha) was very delicious and full of caffeine! I love the fact that they're open for 18 hours a day and have free wifi--somewhere to camp out for a day (and many people do). read more

I recently took a job close by to Buzz Cafe. At first, I occasionally went there for a coffee or to meet my significant other. Overtime however, I have grown to love Buzz Cafe. Now, I'm there twice a day during the week. The baked goods are phenomenal. Every dessert offered is thoughtful and well executed. The desserts are displayed beautifully behind glass and make me feel happy just looking at them. The espresso drinks are served in cute cups and saucers with dark chocolate flavored espresso beans. Additionally, the staff is super friendly. Here is the greatest Buzz Cafe feature: $.50 coffee if you bring your own cup. I don't know of any other coffee shop that offers anything like that! read more

Pros: I like the friendly staff, the laid-back ambience and the sleek, contemporary decor of Buzz. And I give it kudos for inviting community leaders and personalities to speak in its weekly summer "conversations" series. The cocktails are also very nice, albeit a tad too sweet. Cons: I've had the quiche at Buzz twice - very good - but the slices are quite small, especially for the price you pay. I also wish that the crumb-laden carpet was vacuumed more frequently (families bring their small children, who, as small children are wont to do, drop muffin bits everywhere). Buzz was similar to my "Hello Cupcake" experience, but with a little bit moister cake and better frosting. Still, Bundle S. and I tried two cupcakes: the Vanilla/Chocolate and the Buzz. Both were birthday-ish and blase. However, I give Buzz 2-stars instead of one because they serve other non-cupcake items that I didn't try (so maybe there's something redeemable), and because the outdoor seating was rather nice compared to the busy, loud, and crowded areas within DC. I've gone to Buzz a few times for my cupcake needs--a couple of birthday parties and the odd fix. Finding a good cupcake in Old Town is like looking for a needle in haystack (don't give me any of that BIttersweet nonsense). The Red Velvet cupcakes are the best IMO--but nothing my very own sister can't top at home. Update: on 3/16 I needed a pink birthday cake for my sister, and being fearful of Cakelove I ordered from Buzz. This little beauty was on-point--the cake was perfect (i refused to say the "m" word as it's on my most-hated words list, but you get the drift) even if the frosting was a little TOO sugary for my taste. Even still, I think the frosting was a nice touch--hearkening back to the old school days of teeth-tingling birthday cakes without being disgusting. read more

After a delicious meal at Rustico, I had to see what the hoopla was about at Buzz Bakery. After seeing the use of bacon on several products, I was hooked. I immediately bought the peanut butter bacon cheesecake. On a subsequent visit, I got the bacon cupcake, along with the mocha cupcake. The cheesecake was heavenly. I'd buy 100 of these if I could and subsist only on bacon cheesecake. The peanut butter perfectly complemented the bacon in this playful creation. The peanut butter bacon cupcake was good, but didn't hit the target quite as well as the cheesecake. The mocha cheesecake was exceptional though. If I lived nearby, I could see myself eating here more often, and I noticed they served beer as well as paninis. The seating looked comfy and it was overall a cool place to hang. Our dog also enjoyed the dog treats sold here. I will be back here for the cheesecake. Post haste. read more

Waaaaay better coffee than Misha's. However, a million times slower service than Misha's. I waited 10 minutes in line (there was only one other person in front of me) to get one cup of coffee...not a latte,... not a cappuccino.... a regular, drip coffee. Breakfast brioche with egg and cheese inside--While the idea is awesome, it was extremely salty. I mean so salty I couldnt even eat it. Perhaps it was a mistake. I really like this place. Its cozy inside, lots of sun, they also have outside patio for nice weather days... Also have lots of 'pretty' looking pastries (though I haven't tried any of them) I would definitely go back, only when I have patience to wait 10-15 minutes for a cup of coffee. 1 Star for the coffee... 1 Star for the atmosphere. read more

A surprisingly nice place to spend the afternoon working. I didn't have high expectations for Buzz, nestled as it is in a particularly bland part of Alexandria. But I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't try the much-ballyhooed cupcakes, but the muffins and scones were tasty and fresh (reasonably priced, to boot). And the Illy coffee is excellent, hot and well-brewed. As for the ambiance: Buzz has a lot of light and a few cozy couches and chairs; friendly (and not pushy) wait staff; and free Wi-Fi. It usually seems full of professionals from nearby offices and new mothers from the nearby townhouses. Plenty of unrestricted parking in the neighborhood, if you drive; you can also park in the lot behind the cafe for a few hours. This place won't win any prizes for its atmosphere; I wouldn't go out of my way to have a coffee at Buzz. But if you're in the neighborhood and need to get some work done, it's a good place to go. read more

Might seem silly to update my 5-star review with yet another 5-star review, but there is so much more to be said about Buzz. I freaking love this place. It's like my second home. No really. Over the past few weeks I have literally spent more waking hours in this coffee shop than in my own apartment. I know a lot of places that get annoyed with the "regular" types, but not at Buzz. Everyone that works there is so so friendly. I never feel anything but welcomed, even when I've been there until closing for three nights in a row. They are the epitome of what a coffee shop is supposed to be. And then there's the food. The breakfast brioche has pretty much singlehandly ruined my diet. I could eat that everyday. Seriously. Cookies are excellent, pastries are perfect, panini are delish. Their cupcakes are okay, but I actually do think the frosting is a little too sweet. I had a slice of their cake the other day and almost went into a diabetic coma. But I still ate the whole thing so it can't be that bad. This place is amazing. You will love it. We won't be coming back here. What cafe puts up signs at every table except for one to say that you cannot use a laptop? Answer: Buzz. Even upon asking politely for permission, the answer was a resounding 'no.' It's ironic that they have a big chalkboard at the top that reads "what a great place to work on my laptop...." The music could be lower, especially since it's not very good. The coffee is unimpressive and they don't have many shot options; they should have at least one minty one. The peanut butter cupcake was way too sweet. The $4 for is unjustifiable. Misha's in Old Town has better coffee, better cupcakes (though not even known for this) and has wi-fi. I gotta say the folks at Buzz just keep raising the bar for the competition each time I'm here. I moved to the DC area( four blocks from Buzz) about 2 years ago to begin a PhD and I am already feeling like I may have to include the staff in on any celebration I have when I complete my PhD as their great coffee(prepared with care/pride), outstanding desserts and sandwiches have served as fuel for many a research paper. Today, just another one of my many visits to Buzz, I had a sausage and provolone sandwich(they have several great options). To not do any disservice to the yelp community...the sandwich was good, nothing to write home about but it was good sandwich. I had Boylans ginger ale with the sandwich, also good, but that's just a soda. NOW for the much deserved Buzz accolades. I have had several cappuccinos at buzz and they have all been outstanding. I make my own at home but theirs are always better, kind of frustrating. I ordered one today and I am drinking it as I write this review. I took a couple pictures of it and added them to the Buzz yelp photos (perfect cappuccino#1 and #2). The Buzz staff, no exaggeration, is always providing service with a smile and lets face it that is always an added bonus. Today they took the time to explain the different types of cappuccinno options a. European and b. the starbucks version. They convinced me the European was the way to go and its no doubt the best cappuccino I have had to date. Their words "a perfect blend of espresso and milk", they were telling the truth. Since I need to get back to working on a paper I will cut this short but the desserts are top of the line. Mini cheesecakes can't be beat. Cookies, shakes head, fogetaboutit competitors, you cant touch these. I am not a big cup cake fan, I think there are always better options than a cupcake but they look really good. Its clear creativity and pride has went into constructing them but I can't comment on the taste as I have never indulged. Anyway, go to Buzz, its well worth it, every time. I am not sure how they have the 3 or 3 and half star rating. I can't imagine how someone would not enjoy this experience. Even my Dad who is a blue-collar man through and through thought it was a awesome when he came to visit from Michigan and he would rather get a gas station coffee to avoid the highfalutin folks one might find at a place like Buzz but he loves it here. Sometimes I even text him the cookies or cheesecakes I eat just to rub it in that I get to eat the good sh*t down here in Alexandria. Hats off you to you Buzz Crew! Job well done! read more

My boyfriend brought me here one weekend for breakfast, as he knows of my love for all things sweet and delicious. As I sat in my chair, sipping a chai tea, munching on some donut holes and trying to ponder which cupcakes I would be taking with me for a treat later- I thought to myself, "This bakery is delicious- but it's in SUCH a random location!" Right on the edge of some giant weird home development kind of in between DC and Alexandria- lies this gem of a bakery: Buzz. It's super cute on the inside, with all sorts of old cooking tool decor, yet very chic and modern at the same time. The breakfasts are delicious, from the french toast to the donuts, and the quiche is also quite tasty. But what will bring me back here- since it is a bit of a trek- are the delicious cupcakes. Not quite up to Magnolia par, but the best I've founds so far in the city. Worth a trip out into this strange suburbia! read more

My family and I came in on Saturday evening. The ladies behind the counter were attentive and I think that's it... I remember them giving drinks in real cups, but we got both our coffee and hot chocolate in paper cups even though we were staying in. The cupcakes we ordered were okay as well, they seems to have been sitting out for a while since they were a little stale/hard. My dad loves coffee and he didn't like the flavor at all. He mentioned it tasted really cheap. My hot chocolate didn't have much flavor either. I just remember Northside Social's hot chocolate, omg, they used real chocolate, I could taste it! Great selection of cup cakes. All of ours were very moist, even after 4:00 PM. The red velvet was delicious with just the right amount of icing. Not too sweet. I come here BECAUSE not everyone and their cousin has some piece of technology out. I don't understand the reviews complaining about this. If you want to use your laptop/ipad and drink coffee go to every other coffee place in the area. It's beyond irritating when someone with their laptop orders a muffin and a black coffee and sits in a coffee shop for hours on end with their crap spread out everywhere. Personally, if I want to sit and stare a screen and be isolated I'll stay home or go to work. *cough* Anyway. Buzz Bakery. The service is always pleasant and the food/drink is fantastic. Buzz is simply fabulous: Local, cozy, eclectic. And, some of the best damn breakfast fare in town. Located on a quiet, off-the-beaten-path street, Buzz Bakery & Coffee is a sure treat for early morning cravings and desperate caffeine needs. Plus, there are ample couches for curling up with your daily read and cup of joe. The coffee assortment is typical - hot/cold brews, lattes, cappuccinos, you know the drill - but they just do it better than other coffee houses. Might I recommend the iced latte, triple shot, with whole milk (or skim if you are one of those fat-watching nazis). You will be wired for the day, in a good way. And, for the food...If it's your first time at Buzz, you will feel inundated with options: Quiche, pastries, scones, muffins, cupcakes, tarts, etc., etc. I suggest the following for Buzz virgins: The brioche breakfast sandwich (a fluffy, slightly-sweet brioche roll, filled with melted cheddar and scrambled eggs), the spinach and gruyere scone (my personal favorite - salty, mildly cheesy, gooey goodness!), and the monster-sized cinnamon roll (big enough for two - perfect portions of cinnamon/sugar, lightly caramelized on top, and moist on the inside). Buzz is fantastic - evidenced by the throngs of patrons - and pet-friendly. Do arrive early to assure full availability of the food I mentioned above. They don't last long! read more

With brunch plans at Birch & Barley the following day I'd already read up a bit about pastry chef Tiffany Macisaac before I even realized that she was the brains behind Buzz Bakery and with strong reviews plus a convenient location I decided to visit Buzz after Society Fair for some more pre-Zoo carbs and caffeine. Bright and cheery, pastels and cartoons aplenty I will first note that Buzz is a lot of fun - a place where families and their children go to spend the morning - and as such there wasn't a seat available when I arrived just after 9:00 while the line stretched approximately fifteen deep. Featuring both kitchen composed items and baked goods continually emerging from the kitchen to replete the supply I notably had plenty of time to make my decisions and chatting with some folks in line I was told the cookies were the best, but decided to expend my calories elsewhere along with a cup of Illy to go. Walking outside where the sun was bright and the day was already warm I took a seat outdoors at a nearby restaurant yet to open for the morning and with photos taken and fork in hand began to work through my options; the first two still warm from the oven in the form of a Brioche Cinnamon Roll and a Triple Chocolate Bread Pudding. Difficult to decide where to begin but with the roll weighing a few ounces while the bread pudding had mass similar to a brick I started with the cinnamon roll and found each swirled layer rife with butter and cinnamon while the frosting was lightly applied - a good thing in that it added sweetness without overwhelming and although the crumb could have been lighter overall the flavors were excellent. Moving next to the bread pudding, if a picture is worth a thousand words then I guess all one needs to do is look at the picture to know just how rich it was - thick chocolate brioche melded together with chocolate custard and topped with cocoa frosting. High in quality, both in terms of ingredients and texture, I cannot even pretend there was anything subtle or nuanced about this bread pudding - just a whole lot of cocoa that demanded coffee, milk, or (ideally) someone to share with. For the last item of the morning, a Red Velvet Cupcake was sampled with part saved for later as I was rather cocoa overloaded at this point and going the opposite route of many cupcakeries I really appreciated the judicious use of frosting on Buzz's version - a light and airy cream cheese adding a little bit of tang to the cake without overwhelming it or making it overly sweet. Moist and aromatic without being heavy or too spongy the cake itself also held its own, and at $3.00 proved a veritable bargain compared to the smaller, overpriced, and overrated versions with a two-hour wait at Georgetown Cupcake. read more

I had the bite-sized red velvet, and it was the best cream cheese frosting I've had in awhile -- a little tart, not too sweet. I live just around the corner and make a point to pop in on a regular basis. Everything about this place is a solid four stars - local flair/mod styling/on trend baked goods. While I don't think this is a place to write home about, it's still a DC region micro-chain that I love to support. My only gripe (and this is a testament to Buzz's popularity) but I can almost never find a seat. It's like all of the 30-somethings in Alexandria are teleworking from this place on a Wednesday afternoon. If I need a place to sit, I hit the library or the Starbucks. Strong, delicious Illy coffe and espresso...a wide variety of tempting sweets...free WiFi...and a cozy, community-gathering-spot feel...I have seriously considered moving to North Old Town/DelRay just to be a 'regular' at Buzz. Sadly, their cupcakes don't necessarily do it for me (a red velvet or bee cupcake will do in a pinch, but my heart belongs to Baked & Wired), but their sugar cookies are the stuff I aspire to in my own kitchen, the peanut butter brownie is addictive (just TRY to only eat half), and the varied desserts and truffles I've tried are all winners. You also have to try the breakfast brioche (a warm roll stuffed with peppery scrambled egg and cheese, with our without bacon) - don't be fooled by its small-ish size, it's a breakfast and a half when paired with coffee or cocoa! I dropped into this place because I was waiting for a friend. The selection was interesting to me, so I decided I would take my wife the next day because she is like a crackhead when it comes to sweets. We went today and I got some cupcakes, cookies and a cinnamon bun. I just ate the cupcake and it was soooooo good I had to write this review. The cupcake was perfect. Not a single thing to say about it. As far as I am concerned Georgetown cupcakes might be as good, but I'm not sure how they could be better, especially after waiting in that ridiculous line. Can't comment on the other things, like they have beer selection identified, but all that was were a few beers in the counter. As someone who takes his beer serious I thought it looked quite pedestrian. But because cupcakes are the centerpiece of their store I gave them four stars because that cupcake was absolutely sublime. Plus one star for not being a one-trick pony. No offense to the beloved bakery boutiques that have been sprouting up left and right... but sometimes you've got to dessert outside of the (cupcake) box. Now just to be a hypocrite, let me kick this off by saying that I did in fact eat a chocolate cupcake with espresso buttercream on my last visit there. I found it to be delightful. Right on par with the 23,000 other cupcakeries I could have frequented. HOWEVER, I left Buzz with a box of treats that included a creme brulee (eh), a mini pecan pie (delicious), some sort of double chocolate mini cake (sinful) and a jar of local honey (take THAT allergies). Ok, so I wasn't in love with the brulee. It happens. But given that Buzz is dishing up desserts at some pretty darn cool establishments in the hood (Rustico, EatBar, Evening Star Cafe) you know that they get right more often than they don't.
