"By the Glass" may be a wine bar but for me, after a single visit, it will be forever known as "the place with the olives". To accompany our happy hour wines my son and I ordered two of his favorite things: Mixed Mediterranean Olives ($5.50) and a Spanish cheese ($9). Perhaps I've spent too long in the Bay Area or perhaps they do things differently in Arkansas but the mountainous bowl of olives that arrived at our table sparked utter joy. This wasn't 5, 10, or even 15 olives; I think it might've been a whole jar's worth. It was not only amusing, but an utter delight. One hundred percent chance of a return visit for the olives alone. We followed with the Spanish cheese and more wine but there was no getting beyond the olives. That's what we'd be talking about. Forever. By the Glass has a good happy hour ($5/glass for selected wine) which pertains only to the wines. It's a low-key, comfortable, unpretentious spot that's received recognition as the best bar, the best wine bar, the best trendy bar, and the best happy hour bar from a variety of publications. During my visit it was quiet and welcoming, an environment I'd feel equally comfortable in either solo or with friends. If you like wine, "By the Glass" is a good find. If you like olives it's even better. read more

The wine bar was about to close when we got there and the owner/bartender graciously let us in. It was empty when we went but he was a great host! The decor was very homey and intimate with quirky artwork and a really neat cork BtG design near the bar. Great ambience They had a great selection of wine and even some beer for those that dont like wine. I asked for a dry red suggestion and the wine was very good. I don't really go here for the wine. They have won awards, and I noticed the waiter taking care in conversing with others about their selection. It may sound odd, but I go here for the olives. I never liked olives. The saltiness was all "ick" to me. But then, I went to By the Glass a year ago. I had their plate with cheeses, olives, cured meats, and bread. The olives were the best thing I had ever tasted- they made my eyes water... it was the way that you enjoy a piece of cake when you've been on a sugar fast for two months. I'm writing this slightly distraught because I live 9 hours away from By the Glass, and won't be able to partake of said olives for quite sometime. They get them in weekly. I've searched in Atlanta for olives like that, but to no avail. The whole platter is delicious- the cheese, the cured meats. It was great a year ago, and it was great this time. I thought I had over-dramatized the olives in my mind, but a year later... yeah, they were still that good. read more

There are countless compliments one could preach to those unfamiliar with the "Natural State." Arkansas harbors many "diamonds" in the rough worth uncovering and By The Glass is of the finest cut, clarity, and color. Making my pilgrimage back to Cambridge will not be easy. I dread having to leave behind all the people who feel like neighbors and the summer breeze that creeps up the river behind my house and whispers secrets sweetened with a pinch of country twang. In New England, I'll crave the chivalrous tweaks, that served to brighten my days with each ma'am, sir, good day, or good evening. And most importantly, the blue-blooded belief that the people, not the powerful, will put honest, hard-working, liberal politicians in positions of power. But with all that said, one thing that I won't miss is the lack of places to drink good wine for a good price. And that is where my review of By The Glass begins... By The Glass is as good as any Yankee wine bar in Boston or Socialist San Francisco saloon. The bartenders and owners at BTG blend sophisticated palates with humble whino culture -- a meritage which would make even Robert Parker exclaim "whoooo pig sooooie." I'm partial to Sonoma whites and can usually choose a glass with a cursory glance at the list. But the hip, blackboard at BTG, hypnotizes me with 90+ point options, Thank God BTG does flights, and thank Mary, Jesus and Joseph that the staff never tosses any 'tude my way when I stutter my way to a sauvignon blanc. There are not many wine bars in the world that can pull off having a waitress who wears short-shorts (like she's the captain of the Razorback cheerleading squad), while maintaining a bottle list as rich as USC and as sophisticated as Stanford. You know you're a regular at BTG once you've heard who the "past owner" of their prized pig stature was, and listened to Mr. Valentine treat you to a story recounting his glory days as an ump in the hay-day of baseball (before all that fancy replay phooey). And I'd be remiss if I failed to mention they have an unbeatable happy hour, a scrumptious cheese plate, and a Google-caliber logo. By The Glass, you are one top notch spot. Bravo. read more

I'm new to drinking wine and haven't really developed a taste for much beyond super sweet Reisling. I love it, but I'd like to try new things. This is why I can't give this place a higher rating. Their wine list was impressive, and the wine I had was delicious, but our server was rude and unhelpful. Two members of our group of four asked for recommendations, which she couldn't give. Not to mention my glass was empty for about 15 minutes before she approached us again. I'll definitely go back, but I hope to have a more knowledgeble & personable server next time. read more

This is a great little wine bar, truly one of the gems of Little Rock. They have a good selection of wines to choose from with a happy hour from 4-6 Mon-Fri. I really enjoy stopping by on my way home from work to unwind. BTG's atmosphere is perfect for spending time with friends, reading a book, or a date. The staff here is great. I never had to wait very long for service. My only real complaint would be the food menu. While BTG does offer food, they only have appetizers. Sandwiches, soups, salads, or other items would complete BTG. Parking can be an issue as BTG is located in the "Heights" neighborhood. Also, BTG has free WiFi. read more

Love this place, great for a casual date night without our kiddo (would not recommend bringing your children here, without the appetizers it's just a nice bar)! BTG employs a knowledgeable staff who are happy to answer questions and make recommendations. They have a great variety of wines available. Husband had a merlot and I had a riesling that were both excellent at $9-$11 a glass. Appetizers are yummy and reasonably priced as well - we had the mozzarella and prosciutto plate, it is so good! We ordered a bottle of wine. Seems pretty normal for a wine bar. She brought us out a bottle that had the cork already sticking out of it and had already been opened previously. If you have ordered a bottle of wine before, you know it is a whole process of opening it in front of you, pouring a small amount, and then asking if you like it, and if you do, then pouring it for everyone else. I noticed that it had already been opened when she walked up. She proceeded to pour it for everyone and then quickly slid away. She was watching to see if we noticed and only came back once after we were done. I asked her if she had opened this bottle that we had bought just for us. She said she had and immediately snatched up the cork, which obviously looked like it had been opened for at least a day. I have never seen anything like this, anywhere, ever, much less a wine bar. By the Glass offers a huge selection of wine and the staff is incredibly knowledgeable and able to offer suggestions based on personal taste. The appetizer selections are delicious and well prepared. We hardly ever visit without ordering one or more. Overall, By the Glass offers everything you can get at the best wine bars in New York, without the pretentious staff and stuffy atmosphere. On countless occasions, my friends and I have planned on going there for one drink and then moving on to a bar and we never end up leaving.
