This review is for brunch only: I have eaten at C Bar four times in the past three consecutive weekends. I have had almost every item on the brunch menu (that has the ability to be vegetarian) and I have never once been disappointed. My partner and I always order different items so we can share. I tend to go for savory-spicy where he goes for rich-sweet tastes. For the seekers of the savory, mouth-watering breakfast try the Verde Chilaquiles (also available Rojo, a little spicier). This is fresh tasting spicy breakfast with perfectly cooked eggs and the right amount of cream. The C-Bar Omelet is another incredibly noteworthy menu item, as well as the Death by Scramble. Their eggs are never over cooked nor spongey, but rather steaming and moist, (the exact way that I want my eggs to taste!) I believe that the best thing you could possibly order for breakfast if you are seeking sweetness is the Monte Cristo French Toast (Also Available is regular French Toast). Two slices of Bourbon Texas Toast served with eggs and syrup, it will surely disappear off your plate faster than you can say The Count of Monte Cristo. I love the brunch service at CBar, I could go on about how their style is exactly what a hungover, hungry person deserves in the morning. Keep the Bloody Mary's comming ladies. Worst service ever seen from a bar, same with the ship ahoy or whatever bar across the street. Bartender walks out the moment we walked in without a word, comes back with a huge attitude, didnt feel welcome at all. First time there will definitely not return, not even that part of ptown, just felt unwelcomed. read more

I love well-executed bar food, and C Bar goes above and beyond. Tasty comestibles with a hint of southern flair, and they have Boo Fries! I know, they're poutine here, but they're still Boo Fries. Cocktails are delicious and well-poured. My only complaint is that they're sometimes under-staffed on the floor and it can take a little bit for a server to get to you. Portland has to be given credit for all of its consistently solid bars and restaurants deserving of at least 4 yelp stars. C Bar is no exception. It's really a 4.5 star place for me. I used to go to this bar all. the. time. about 3 years ago, mainly for drinks. Although I don't frequent it as much as I used to, it's still a place that's always in the back of my mind and definitely my go-to bar in the neighborhood. Speaking of neighborhood, this is the quintessential "neighborhood bar," which in my book is a plus. The veggie burger and the open-faced steak sandwich are seriously so freakin' good. I've always had great servers and bartenders, and the beer menu never disappoints. I know a lot of people love the pinball room, and while I'm not a huge pinball player, I love how it gives this bar a unique edge. Definitely give this place a try. read more

The C Bar was surprisingly fantastic. The wife and I just wanted to find a place to have drinks and some bar food but were assaulted by menu offerings that were too good to pass up. I had the Mussel and Clams off of the share menu and Gnocchi w/ sausage that was on special and doesn't appear to be on the regular menu. My wife had the Beef Stew which I cannot remember if it was on the special board or on the soup list and she also had the Gladstone Poutine. I was a little fussy and didn't know what to really expect and then we were presented with beautiful plates more substantial than just bar food. The shellfish were delicious but I think I liked just soaking the grilled bread in the herb wine sauce with tangy fresh ginger more. The gnocchi was so light it almost floated off the plate but was held securely in a rich tomato sauce and large bites of sausage sprinkled with Parmesan cheese. Very tasty! My wife was thoroughly happy with the beef stew ( I should have tasted it) and the Gladstone Poutine was a dish that at first I had no ideal what to think before tasting. It had everything that my wife and I like: Potato, bacon, mushrooms , cheese, collard greens and gravy but it was presented in a way I have never seen. It was delicious and really would have been just right to share between the two of us if we were not quite as hungry as we were. The only thing I would have changed would be the cheese chunks a little smaller and more evenly distributed but the large chunks may be the way the dish is supposed to be presented. I had a hanker'n for a mixed drink but went with with a light Lager and my wife had a Middlesex which must have been good because she had three. I haven't see her drink three of anything when we go out. The atmosphere was definitely cool and I really like the bar area. Lighting was casual and the music was perfectly ambient and at a volume to enjoy and not overpowering. In the other room were two rows of pinball machine that at any other time I would have partaken but was not in the mood. If not for the drinks ( and this is usually true for anyplace), would have walked out a little heavier in the wallet but was satisfied for sure. read more

Horrible service if you get the gal that finds serving a bother. 8 of us walked out after sitting over 30 minutes without service while other tables around us got served. So originally I gave C-Bar five stars, but in the last week I have had three not so good experiences with service (I live in the neighborhood). So first was an experience with brunch (which was delicious, their food is never a problem). Friends and I went to brunch and wanted to sit outside, so we went to the counter to let them know we were there, and were told to come back inside and order when we were ready, totally fine... So we came back to order and the person at the counter pressured us really hard to buy alcohol and to open tabs, we weren't in a drinking space that morning, and we were served, but not without a, "Well we are a bar" comment. So the next incident was a few days ago when I tried to take my sister out (they list that they accept minors with a parent or guardian) note that their wait staff do not accept legal guardianship, but only parents with proof, and will flat out tell you your lying and kick you out, without even offering take out, again we were VERY rudely told to leave and that "we're a bar" all this while we walk by folks with their grandparents, other people my sisters age, and small children. So our final experience was calling for take out... The chef refused to put my order in a take out box... Sigh *face palm* I thought you "were a bar" why does it matter how my food is plated for take out from a BAR?! If I'm willing to pay you $15 for a plate and want it to go, put it in the box and take my money, last night they lost an $80+ order over that ridiculousness... So yeah, excellent food, good happy hour, but mixed service from excellent to pretty poor. Again, I'll be back for the excellent food! Update: This is such an interesting place, I'm updating because I feel like they deserve another star for the consistently excellent food! However service is always a mixed bag! We've had very very mixed interactions here and did notice the other day when we brought my mom in for a meal we received impeccable service (beyond anything I've ever experienced here) I'm guess that has to do with a middle aged perceived person versus a mid twenties perceived person.. But the quality of this food is absolutely excellent and it's almost always my go to for a casual dinner! In fact I'm off to Cbar right now! Cheers! read more

great happy hour all day sunday. nice and polite staff. it's a pretty place and the bar has lots of great options. definitely was digging the drink menu and can't wait to try desserts. the beer selection is great. the pinball is in good working order most of the time and they actually try to stay on top of it. definitely going to be one of my regular haunts and as far as the place across the street as an option, i must regretfully decline. their pinball isn't that great and i keep wondering if i am in the movie Roadhouse. read more

They specialize in sake-tinis and have a happy hour special until 6:30. Order the Puckerfish (sake pearl with pomegranate and lime juice) or pair sake with your favorite Izze soda and kick back on the patio until Yoko's calls the bartender to bring you next door. Yoko's has the feeling of Saburro's--another SE favorite--with the major advantage of waiting your turn at the C-Bar instead of on a Sellwood curb. read more

The food is delicious comfort food! Lots of vegetarian options: house made veggie burger, veggie hash with brussel sprouts my fave, macaronic and cheese, and their happy house is decently priced on food. I think it happens everyday until 7:00 pm. All the severs were very nice. They were a bit disorganized and slow at times, but the atmosphere is relaxing so it was fine. The regular drinks are a bit spendy even for Portland drink prices, but still yummy.We definitely will be back. read more

I'm torn between a 4 and a 5 star rating... I have only visited the establishment for breakfast. As I do not know the night life there yet or their dinner service I reserve the 5 star rating until I venture there at that time. My first visit or two they were playing metal rock, which is not so desirable at breakfast. A simple request to change the music and they were happy to accommodate. The place is walking distance to my house and I have visited several times. By far the best breakfast in Portland (now that Hash is no longer). Rachel & Jen (bartender/waitress) are FABULOUS!! Super nice, stellar service, and just a joy to be around. Even though this venue caters to the alternative, hipster demographic I took my Mom, Dad, and 86 year old Grandmother there. They liked it very much and said that they would come back. I highly highly recommend the joint. Update: June 9th, 2012 I had dinner at C Bar. The night ambiance is excellent. Great background music, perfect lighting, and of course the decor is fabulous. The dinner & the service...eh. The dinner was good, not bad, not great. I had the hanger steak and it was something that I could have whipped up at home. The service was definitely lacking. The waitress was polite, yet not friendly. I don't think I saw her smile once. There were a total of 7 full tables, 2 waitresses and a bartender. It was busy, but not busy considering the staff available (former fine dining & cocktail waitress here). I didn't wait too long to place my order. The waitress did make a good recommendation on the beverage, again polite but not friendly. I waited a while for my dinner, like half an hour or so. I flagged down my waitress and asked how much longer. She left with out saying anything, went into the kitchen and came out. She checked on other guests, but did not give me an answer. About 5 minutes later she served me my meal. I had to flag her down twice to request something. She finally checked in on my once I was totally done with my dinner and my drink and asked with a monotone voice, "How was everything?" The staff walked around quite a bit but with a casual, meandering kind of way. So, I think this place would be great for an evening cocktail, but not so sure about dinner service. The breakfast & day service are outstanding and the night life is good. A solid 4 stars. read more

I am not a fan of driving into deep southeast, but this place gets me there about once a week. Best all around bar in Portland, with well selected beverage offerings. Very fond of the local wines by the glass, but most of all the HUGE value on the food offerings. You'd think that at that low a price they'd cut corners on preparation, but everything I've had here was executed with a lot of deliberate attention to detail. Fun design to the space and always really good art installations. Acting as the decadent icing on the cake, there is the ever-rotating rare pinball game room. Oh and the very foxy staff. read more

So the chef burger is my new fav! So many different ingredients a burger typically wouldn't have, but yet all compliment each other to create one hell of an experience. My wife really enjoyed here mac and cheese too. (And she's picky) we split a dinner salad which boasted fresh ingredients and Rouge's oregonzolla cheese. Extensive beer selection, my only complaint would be the beer needs to be chilled better or served in chilled glasses. Do yourself a favor and eat here! I've been here many times, and have tried most of the things on their food menu. This is my favorite place in the city to get a burger (both meat and vegetarian options are delicious). Weirdly enough, all the other things in their menu are mediocre. Have not had any real problems with the service yet. I usually have to get up from the table to ask for mustard or other condiments, but no big deal. It does get quite busy and loud in there. I also enjoy the wide selection of beer and drinks. Overall, I like this place, and always come back when I'm in the mood for a burger. read more

Welcome to my second living room where the staff is super friendly and the nicely curated, rotating beer taps keep things interesting. They even ordered my favorite boubon. Bonus. The caesar salad and homemade fries are my late night go-to but the pork egg rolls an deviled eggs are quite good. For brunch, go for the chiliquilli (sp?) because it's the only thing I've ordered and it was scrumptious. The outside tables in front and back are great in the summer. The pinball machines galore, cheesy B-movies on the TV, and tasteful bartender-selected soundtrack make for the perfect home away from home. Perhaps they should change their name to A Bar. read more
