Went there with a friend as part of my continuing exploration of Portland's bars, pubs, & restaurants. Very cool vibe. More than one outdoor seating area where you can drink & smoke - one in the back and one out front. Inside there are 2 rooms - one with the bar and tables and the one in the back with a table and 2 rowns of pinball machines. Decent tap beer list as well as a full bar and bottled beer. Went there primarily for drinks, but there is a decent food menu as well. I had the grilled cheese with a cup of tomato soup. Very good and reasonably priced.Bartenders are very friendly. My wife and I came in to try the food because they were rumored to have the best burgers around. When niether of us ordered drinks, and instead got just food, we were ignored for the rest of our visit. We had to ask for condiments and more water. The food was overcooked and made incorectly. My god, I love this place. We're fortunate to live within walking distance to the best veggie burger I've ever had in my life. I've had almost everything on the menu here, but my favorite are the polenta cakes--so many mushrooms! They've raised the prices recently, but honestly I feel lucky that we got away with eating nearly gourmet food for so cheap, and for so long. They have improved their seating situation with some updated booths and tables, so I'm willing to overlook the price bump. read more

Went to C Bar recently for the first time on a recommendation from my usual bartender. They have a great beer selection and really well maintained selection of pinball machines! Being a bartender myself, I really appreciate good service when I'm able to go out for a drink. I also understand that sometimes, you just have a shit night and you're not on your game. I also understand that some bartenders are just burned out and treat people like dicks. I'm just saying. Rated 4 stars instead of 5 because it was a pretty bad service experience in a place we really wanted to come back to on our rare nights off. Maybe one of the bartenders was having a bad day, or maybe he should find a new job if pulling beers is putting his jock in a twist. His glaring and lack of professionalism was the only reason we didn't stay longer. Dude, if you're reading this, take a break from the gig. We still tipped you 30% even though you were rude, but you really bummed us out. read more

Service was atrocious! A few friends and I went in late for a couple quick drinks and french fries (which are delicious!) they were closing up so I started looking for my jacket. I was checking the tag of one to see if it was mine when the guy behind the bar starts freaking out and yelling at me telling us we're "kicked out"! Fortunately, the female working found it and we left with a few very crude parting words.. My experience the first time we went was a 4, this last time however I would give a 0 if possible which from all the reviews I've read about this place is standard. I really wanted to like this place, I've heard lots of good things about the food and drinks and was excited to finally try it. I can honestly say I will never be back. I've worked in the service industry for a long time, and know that sometimes as a server you're just having an "off day" - maybe someone was mean to you, or whatever. I get that! But after reading other reviews it is clear that the blonde server we encountered is just salty and extremely rude generally. After sitting down at a freshly vacated table (the sign clearly stated "seat yourself") we were made to know very quickly that she was unhappy with our presence. There were two cups left at the table from the previous patrons, she removed them and signaled with her hands for us to pick up our menus so she could wipe the table. No words, just lifted up her hand the way you might I you were training a dog to stand. While wiping the table she said, and I quote "clearly you like to sit in filth." That blew us all away, couldn't believe anyone would be SO rude. So we left, and I can't imagine I'll ever be back. End of rant! I gave 2 stars instead of zero, because dammit the food looked good and I'm honestly bummed I won't be trying it. read more

First off, consistently top-notch burgers! Always the best bar food! I really wish I could have just emailed C-Bar and told them about the next part of my review, but alas, no email to be found. I don't want to punish a business with a low-star review due to its waitstaff, but my most recent experience went from 5 stars to 2 stars, and waitstaff, unfortunately are the face of a business no matter what sort of "day" they're having. I'm not sure if it was the server that everyone continues to mention in other reviews, (I'm assuming it was the "salty blonde" one, because she was in fact "salty" and "blonde") but this woman was out for blood for whatever reason. We are regulars at C-Bar, and most of the time, we get the same (mostly) friendly waitress as usual, but for whatever reason, this time partway through our night, (like something out of a movie where there's a plot twist) we were switched out for this new fore mentioned server that I've never seen before that immediately decided that she didn't like our friend at our table of three, singled him out as prey, and was biting and rude to him the entire time; talking to him in a barking and condescending tone like "Mommy Dearest", making snide comments and shots at his competence and understanding, taking extra long on his order over ours (as a punishment?), bringing his drinks 10-15 minutes later after ours, etc. It was completely uncalled for considering how quiet and polite he is. I really really hope C-Bar reads this and takes this to heart. It was a really unpleasant experience for a paying customer with a good tab who absolutely didn't deserve to be treated that way, and we invited to C-Bar because it is our favorite bar. If you're having weird personal issues, don't bring them to work and exercise them on your innocent customers. Take a class on managing aggression or kickboxing or something. But again, regardless of this embarrassing experience: C-Bar is still my favorite bar in Portland; great food. Waitstaff, however, needs to work some issues out. Please. The place looks cute and it seems like anyone should be able to be comfortable there. The open sign is an old suitcase! The booths were nice and tall, and the set up looked fairly easy to move around in if it was full. I did momentarily feel like an asshole with a big picture of a "faces of poverty" kid right in my line of sight (there were additional photos on that theme) but whatever. They had a lot of nice beers as well as regular ole swill. The server was very nice and everything was casual and timely. The food was fan-fuckin-tastic and even more so because it wasn't what we came for. Best veggie burger ever! I wish I'd taken a picture; it was plated very nicely. Boyfriend's mac 'n' cheese was also superb and had enough sauce left to dip fries in. All so mmm. We really went for the pinball, and the 15 machines have their own back room. Obviously that is where the magic happens. All in all a fun date place, as well as somewhere it would not be depressing to be alone in. read more

c bar is one of the reasons i love my neighborhood. open from 4:30-2am every day, it's the answer to any late-night craving. the beer selection is pretty limited, but they've got great cocktails and delectable food. BEST. ENCHILADA. FRIES. E-VER. inside is pretty dim and a bit loud, but if it's nice outside they've got a line of picnic tables to sit at. average prices on food and beer, but sundays are all-day happy hour prices. it can be a deal. i'd also like to make a special note regarding the service. the last time i was here, i ordered the enchilada fries with red and green sauce and added pork and bells for extra. when the fries came out, they were simply cheese and bean-topped fries. when i went in to let the bartender (our server) know, i just asked for the missing items on the side and said it wasn't a big deal. when the cook brought the sides out himself, he joked around with us and apologized. then the bartender came over and offered us a second round on the house. we were full and we really didn't care about the mishap, so we declined. when the check came, we realized the bartender comp'd our entire enchilada fry order. i don't remember the last time i had a restaurant work so hard to correct their mistakes. the service here is almost always great, but this was a very memorable experience. read more

I was visiting Portland for a few days and found myself in Central Portland for a night. We came across this bar with a good late night food menu and decided to stop in. It was very slow and we walked right up to the bar where a tall bald man with facial hair "helped" us. Strike one, he seemed bothered that we were interrupting a personal conversation that he was having with another patron (who we later realized worked at the bar). Strike two, when he asked for our ID's he took a bit longer looking at my friend's ID who's birthday was coming up. This rude bald man barked at another bartender asking what the date was. We thought he was going to wish my friend a happy birthday but instead he said "Is this expired?" We order our drinks and one of our other friends ordered the most amazing cocoa mole beer. The bar patron who works at the bar was very nice and told us a lot about the beer choice. We found a booth and after tasting this magical beer I decided I wanted that instead. So I handed my drink to my friend who was halfway done with his drink and got up to order the beer. Strike three, In that moment the bald guy came up and said he had to take away the drink I gave my friend because it is illegal to serve one person two drinks. Now don't get me wrong, the law is the law, however the way he said it left a lot to be desired. We drank our drinks quickly, decided against ordering food, and got out of there. The drinks were good, the ambiance was ok, but that service really ruined the experience. I added an extra star only because the guy who was off work at the bar was very nice and because a different bartender saw us at the bar across the street an hour later and bought my birthday friend a drink. read more

One of my friends put a sampler cup back on a tray while I was hanging with a different party (which was apparently a big no no here) but something that is definitely common practice at a party or communion. I come to sit down with them and we all three get thrown out because this one dude thought it was what he was supposed to do. Apparently you have to be a hipster and wear a scarf to get service here. I walked in and said "good evening" and was immediately asked "have you been drinking tonight?" With a childlike tone and hand on her hip the bartender basically ruled me off without even a hint of professionalism or tact. Since I am a local bartender and consider myself to have bar etiquette, I can say with 100% confidence I have never spoken to a customer like that. And it should also be noted that I was completely sober and was the DD for the night, it was my last stop before home. Not to mention she hadn't engaged me long enough to determine whether or not I was a VIP in the first place. So I probably won't ever go back, I've never felt so discriminated against in a bar. Which is a shame since I really like Jamie and he's always gone out of his way to be courteous to me. That woman should pick another profession that doesn't include customer service, or have some common sense look around lady every one in here is drinking tonight! What a bummer, we bring guests from out of town after bragging about how great it was, and it sucked. Whoever was cooking that night burned all of our food black and tried to hide it by turning it over. I returned one dish to have it replaced with another burnt piece of food. Worst customer service ever. The bartender just threw the stuff in my face. Didn't get to try anything because I thought I was a better idea to leave, rather than get some bad attitude. Man, where do I start? The best burgers in town, best pinball in town, $6 chili and beer special on Sundays, the friendliest bar staff, the most adorable chefs, one of the best tap lists in town, across the street to the best dive bar in town...where can you go wrong? Perhaps the poutine has a touch too much salt (even that isn't enough to take a star away). One of my favorite places to be. I generally would give a place a second chance before talking bad about it, but Heather (bartender) takes the cake for over the top rudeness and deserves to be called out (see other review below... Several remark about the rude service.. One even mentions a frizzy haired waitress/bartender...Sounds like Heather). After starting to eat my happy hour soup and sandwich and have a ginger ale and whisky, I decided to order a pork sandwich to go. Heather said they don't do those to go but I could have a hamburger to go if I wanted. What?? When I asked about the logic behind the limited-to-go policy, Heather defensively blurted out a list of illogical reasons... And in return for her attitude I bluntly told her that I thought it was a stupid policy. She quickly told me that I could go somewhere else if I didn't like it. While I admit that "stupid " was an immature choice of words, a bartender at a busy place should have a little thicker skin and shouldn't be so ready to send a customer packing. After thinking about it for a few minutes, I returned to the bar and politely ordered a pork sandwich " for here ". My plan was to simply take the sandwich with me in my hands. No to go container necessary. She said " I already told you I am not giving you a pork sandwich ". When I told her that was ridiculous because I was just going to carry it out in my hands, she told me i needed to close out and leave. Bottom line: a business can make just about any policy they want.. But a customer should be able to give their feedback without quickly being verbally assaulted. Oh.. And when I asked for the manager's name, she told me that the manager would just tell me the same thing she had already told me. I had to ask a second time before she told me. Went here with 3 friends. The server was friendly, no nonsense which I like. The fried chicken was gluten-free and delicious. Burgers and BBQ sandwich were awesome. Fries were awesome. Scotch eggs were expensive as appetizers usually are, kinda yummy. They had an outside patio with smokers which I didn't notice until the meal was over. Then we played pinball on several of the dozen machines. They even had a change machine. Fun meal and a little entertainment. Highly recommended. read more

Been coming here for over a year and never had something bad. Just had the best biscuits and sausage gravy I've ever eaten. No hyperbole. Food here in general has been good to outstanding. C-Bar is by far the best kept secret in this SE neighborhood! Every time i visit my tongue is tickled by the delectables that arrive in front of me! The pork tamales are WONDERFUL with a sauce that is somewhere between a Colorado and a mole- deeee-light-ful! other samplings I've enjoyed are the veggie mezza , cheese plate, pizza,( which i was astonished to read Juliet M's review after my experience and then i read all her reviews and saw a common thread- boo! hiss! to her) and collard greens- which is the perfect balance between tangy and savory with large chunks of bacon , yup real bacon! The staff here is also the most attentive I've met in a long time. One bartender i swear could be Flash Gordon's love child - the speed and accuracy that he maneuvered about the joint was jaw dropping- the others are nothing short of southern sweet charm mixed with Portland savvy. Drinks to remember: Manhattan. Old Fashioned. My date had a bartenders personal favorite concoction( Fresh strawberry and ??) more on the fruity side, but she loved it! wonderful wine list , perfect selection of beer.
