I came here while visiting town once and was blown away. I've lived in Sacramento for at least two decades and have passed by this place on multiple occasions and yet somehow never stopped in. I wish I had sooner. It's definitely a great place to fill up on home cooked, authentic Mexican food. Plenty of options on the menu and each of the dishes looked very filling. Caballo Blanco has nice atmosphere and an authentic feel to it. The service was good very friendly and attentive. The food was just so-so, I had the Chile Colorado plate and it did not impress meat not as tender as I am used to, the rice was bland and the beans were a little thicker than I like. I've been to Caballo Blanco many times in my life. I've always enjoyed their food, especially the carnitas. I recently took my family here for my son's 15th bday....we probably should've gone to El Novillero. I ordered the carnitas, and they were small, round pieces that looked like they'd been sliced a few days before. They were also as dry as the desert. My wife ordered steak fajitas. Can't really go wrong there, right? The strips of meat were REALLY hard to chew. My younger kids had quesadillas. Dry tortilla and kinda meh. Luckily, my bday boy ordered Chile verde. That saved him from the dry, overcooked ordeal that the rest of us had to deal with because the verde salsa drowned the meat. I ALMOST complained and asked for at least part of the meal comp'd, but I didn't wanna be that guy. I've had less than great meals there before, but never like this. My grandfather played music at the club above Caballo and would come down to grab dinner and the food is literally the exact same!! I was surprised the menu wasn't bigger since it's a Mexican restaurant and usually there's more choices. The food was good and came out pretty fast, only complaint we thought some of the food was overpriced. One taco was $4.50 although it did come with some salad on the side, which we did not eat. I think there was a party or gathering in their private room which was a little loud and distracting. I've been coming here since I was a child with my mother. It's always been delicious. The chips and salsa and the complimentary soup are excellent. I love many dishes here. This place is a Sacramento institution and been around since 1961. Here's what I think makes Caballo Blanco special: Biggest and best hard shell chicken tacos. Delicious enchilada sauce. Fluffy Mexican rice with the most flavor in town. Chorizo flavored refried beans on tostadas/nachos Soup with your meal Plates garnished with lots of avocado, olives, and tomatoes. I don't regret coming and trying the food. Liked the atmosphere inside and the service was very very friendly. But the service also included forgetting our orders multiple times and long waits. Understaffed. The other reviews are correct a lot of the food is bland. Avoid the bean burrito, tamale, and enchiladas. Although salt will fix most of this because the underlying flavor is good just unseasoned. The chile rellano is worth a try. Tangy goodness but too much breading ratio to the chile. The free soup and the flour tortilla chips are where this place shines but alas they are the free/cheapest part of the meal. My son & I came here on a whim when we were in the mood for some Mexican food. Chips & salsa were really good & we tried the guacamole as well which was amazing. Nice & flavorful without huge chunks of onion which I can't stand. My son got the Platillo Mexicano which came with a grilled steak & a cheese enchilada. His steak was so juicy & tender & seasoned perfectly. We didn't notice in the description that it only comes with beans, no rice but the waitress was sweet enough to bring him a little rice at no extra charge. I got the carnitas & they were soooo good! Crunchy & tasty. Wish it came with guacamole & sour cream but it was still a delicious meal. Hands down the worst customer service ever....The waitress told us she was extremely busy but mind you there were 5 other waitress just walking around.
