Great food, generous portions; however can get busy and thus might have slow service! Prices reasonable. The crowd is a lot of elderly people with not much diversity lol. Lots of tennis playing on the screens during Indian Wells. Server was very nice but again just took a while to order because they were busy. Cactus Jack's is a really interesting old school restaurant the sort that are becoming few and far between. We found everyone there from hostess to runner to bus people to be on point, friendly, helpful, available without being intrusive. Exactly the experience I fined becoming more and more scarce. The food is outstanding. Between us I had the NY Strip which was perfectly done to med-rare, tender, the baked potato and green salad all prepared with care: Delicious. We also had the Asian Chicken Salad which is billed as "Entrée Size Salad" and it is! No after thought, not an obligatory menu item it was prepared with the same care as the steak dinner. The ambiance is exactly what you'd expect to find in restaurant of this sort, a dying breed of an upscale classy place. It was bustling but still quiet enough to have a conversation in a normal tone. I love prime rib, so while in the desert doing some work, I decided to stop in for some delicious and perfectly cooked prime rib, again. This is the second time I have visited here, this time on Halloween night. The service here is always friendly and competent. The prime rib is as perfect as it gets. The attached pictures are of my food and my friend's food. This prime rib and fixings is $55 and weighs between 12-14 oz which I find to be a great price for the quality. If you like golf memorabilia, the place is decorated with loads of moments from golf and Bob Hope. I don't quite get it, but I was there for the food and the smiles from the servers and hostess. YELP SHORT ANSWER: Yes, a lot of fun. For good reason, I've only been here once over the years but finally made it and had a good time on this visit. Get there at 11am or 2 pm for lunch it gets busy. LOCATION: Easy to find off the 111, parking can be a challenge and that is why I have not been here. It can be a slammed drunken traffic demolition derby looking parking situation, so pick your times. FACILITY: About what I expected, serious local patina, dark space but it has a very lived in feeling which is great for this semi locals hangout. MENU: Awesome menu, lots of choices so you will find something you like. FOOD PREP: It was acceptable but nothing fancy, even for a $20 French Dip sandwich but again, it was about what I expected. However the avocado salad with tuna was great, excellent prep. Go with a salad. FOOD QUALITY: As for my French Dip it was less than impressive, meat was a little dry but it was just okay and I ate half and shared the rest but had a great side of a cold pasta salad. As for the Avocado Salad it was really refreshing on a 116 degree day, very fresh, but humongous. 1/2 order available for like $15.00. LIBATIONS: I think they know how to mix a drink here. Uber I always a good option. WAITSTAFF: Could not be nicer, the person who helped us took time to chat and laughed as to why we have never visited, too full of a parking lot and she says she hears that several times a week. We have a home in La Quinta so not super close and not worth the chaos that it appears to have going on at time. OVERALL VALUE: Not great but about normal for this area, all great people and the food was good so you get what you pay for. TIP: Decide where you want to sit, in the bar is loud, dining area is quieter, and the outdoor space is seasonally great. You have options, know in advance as the seating pace is rapid. Cactus Jacks is an old standby when you come to the Coachella Valley. They are located in a very convenient area Palm Desert. Can't go wrong with anything on their menu they have plenty of TVs available so you can enjoy your favorite game with your favorite meal. We had a phenomenal salad there and also the burgers were very good. The service at Cactus Jack's is also very good even though they sometimes get crowded they seem to handle everybody. Nice low-key atmosphere don't have to get overdressed to enjoy your meal at Cactus Jack's. read more

These are some of the best steaks! The restaurant had a refresh on decor and lighting since our last visit so much brighter and fresh looking still with the vibe of retro Hollywood. I've been wanting to stop here for quite some time. It's always so busy that I've driven on. Tonight it was still busy at 8 o'clock on a Thursday, but there were a few tables available and I was able to get right in. It's a nice kind of old school restaurant with lots of Palm Springs golf pictures all around the room. My waitress, Michele, and Bus boy Ricardo, we're very friendly, professional, and attentive. I had the petite prime rib with a baked potato. It also comes with a salad, reasonable price, huge portion and very tasty. Or dessert I had tapioca pudding, which is very hard to find at restaurants anymore, and this one was a big portion and delicious In short, I strongly recommend cactus Jack. We went on a whim on a Saturday afternoon around 1:30. We were immediately greeted and sat in a large booth in the main dining room. Water came immediately and we were informed that it was happy hour until 2 pm. Two great pours to start off our afternoon adventure. The place was packed especially in the bar but the staff is extremely competent and added to our experience. We have lived here for 4 years and have no idea why we waited so long to try this place! I got the taco salad and ate about a 1/3 of it as it was heaping with taco meat ! My husband ordered the nachos, and the chicken add was a plus . Hostess seemed overwhelmed by her job, kind of scattered. Sat us at a table near the door in a high traffic area. Several booths were empty, so we asked about those. She said somewhat derisively, "No. The people with booths make their reservations a month in advance." This seemed like nonsense since we had no trouble making our own reservation the day before, and a couple of the booths continued to sit empty most of the time we were there. I dunno, maybe they were expecting Sinatra to drop in. The waitress, however, was attentive and good at her job. Got the sense she could be an owner. The worker who delivered the food spilled au jus in my wife's lap, but it's hard to blame him. Tables are packed in very tight, and it's clearly hard for the wait staff to move around. And the packed room is very loud. Hard to have dinner conversation. The salad was chopped iceberg lettuce with dressing on it. That's it. No other veggies, no croutons, just pale white lettuce -- they don't call it iceberg for nothing. Their famous prime rib was a big ol' slab of beef, an inch-plus thick. Nothing special, really, and even the "petite" cut was oversized. A seafood pasta dish was so big it could have fed all four of us. Jack's is what we call a "good and plenty" place -- enormous portions but otherwise unremarkable flavorwise. I'm sure the senior clientele likes having a lot of leftovers, so the emphasis is on that. If that's your thing, you'll like this place -- just be sure to get your reservation in a month in advance and ask for a booth, or that grumpy, flustered hostess is going to jam you in somewhere else. read more

Sat at the bar for lunch. Initially there were not 2 seats together but the super nice hostess was able to convince people to move around. Mood lighting that brings your voice down as you speak. Your walk bends to completely upright and your manners take over. It's my great pleasure not only to be back home in SoCal for a time, but also to have gotten a seat at the bar at Cactus Jacks for Happy Hour. Cactus Jacks is NOT a 3.9 star dining establishment. Photos are of the delicious food we had. Shrimp cocktail, beef ribs, prime rib sliders. That's just club soda but if you ordered a mixed drink, it would be in a big tall glass like that. Bruce was thrilled by the sliders - the meat was tender and flavorful. The beef ribs aren't smoked but they are tender and tasty. The shrimp cocktail was real shrimp. The bar menu is different from the dining room menu. We have eaten in the dining room several times, but never got the prime seats at the bar before and happy hour. Lifetime achievement unlocked! My friends and I went here for dinner on Dec. 30th and the place was really busy even though it was a little after 5pm. The hostess seated us right away at a table with a great view for people watching. Our server was very personable and patience with us as we studied all the food options. The wine selection is very nice and the red we ordered was delicious! I liked that the noise level was reasonable so we didn't need to yell to talk with each other. I ordered the scallop pasta dish and it was enough for 3 people!! Great flavors and I even ate the broccoli, which I am not a fan of. My friends had the meat loaf special and fish & chips. Unbelievable servings and we all came home with leftovers!! They even box it up for you! The only negative was some of the customers were dressed like they were going to bed or work in the yard. I am of the belief if you are going to a nice restaurant, you should dress better than what I saw. There were a reasonable number of folks dressed in nice clothing and footwear. A "new" spot for us, not new to Palm Desert just us We have been coming to Palm Desert for 25+ years, always drove by, well we decided to stop (a friend did suggest it!) and we did! Fortunately we found 2 seats at the bar, all the reservations had the tables committed~ we like sitting at the bar so this was PERFECT FULL BAR, and heavy pours with friendly bartenders, what more could you ask for?
