Hearty ethiopian food in a casual atmosphere. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon and it was busier than we've seen before; they had their monthly Sunday vegan buffet going ($25) that offered some items not on their usual menu and looked tasty. We ended up getting platters off the menu instead, mostly ordering vegetarian. (But if you're hungry or want more food, the buffet is a good option.) The green beans and the collards are a solid combination because of the difference in texture and spice. Cabbage, fish and beef were also good. Everything came either on a bed of injeera (soft) or rice, or a combination. On weekdays they have lunch specials which are the best deals and very good and inevitably you'll have leftovers to enjoy later. Service has been better and more attentive in the past but it was busier than usual too. The actual decor and location is a bit dated but you probably wouldn't come here for the atmosphere. They also sell their coffee and other small things to go. I don't have ethiopian that often so this was a treat. Shared parking lot with other businesses.

For some reason, we enjoyed this visit even more than the last because we ordered properly! No meat. We are both "meated out". The Deluxe Vegetarian Platter was massive, enough for 3 people, served with fluffy teff bread (injera). They provide a small fresh (uncooked) vegetable salad on the round plate of cooked lentils, together with excellent greens which was a much needed reprieve. I had my collard greens (gomen) so I was happy! The diners were of diverse backgrounds and it was nice to see people from all backgrounds and ethnicities enjoying the taste of African spices and unique Ethiopian food preparation. Till next time, Lalibela! Highly recommended this business. We met the lady who does the cooking! Lalibela, long may you thrive!

Café Lalibela is a must try spot!!! Highly recommend. Very tasty and healthy food. Big portions and priced well. The injera was delicious. Service was great. Very beautiful restaurant inside with plenty of seating. Our meals were super flavorful and we were very impressed overall. If you've never tried Ethiopian food before, this is the perfect place!

A great spot for Ethiopian cuisine. My friend and I shared the Lalibela deluxe platter and though it said it was for 2, it could definitely feed three easily. I had leftovers for another two days! The collard greens and the beef were some of my favorites. Scooping up the food with the injera was a delicious way to make sure you tasted a little bit of everything. The server was patient with us since we had a hard time deciding what to get. The cold chai was a refreshing accompaniment to our meal too. It's a clean, bright and well decorated restaurant. I'd go back again to try other dishes.

Been wanting to try Ethiopian food for a while now. My friend and I decided to finally give it a go! We decided to go with the lalibela deluxe (for 2), and it was surely overkill! When they say it's for 2, they mean 2 very large guys lol. We had extras for sure! I quite enjoyed eating the food their way, it reminded me of the Middle East, in a good way! The woman taking our order was very patient! We also got the cold chais, which I couldn't stop drinking! I'd come back to this place again for sure!

If you haven't experienced the vibrant flavors of Ethiopian cuisine, then Café Lalibela is the perfect place to embark on that culinary adventure. From the moment we walked in, the warm, welcoming atmosphere enveloped us. The service was stellar, with attentive staff who were excited to guide us through the menu. Their passion for Ethiopian food was evident, making us feel right at home. We started our meal with the Kitfo Sliders, a delightful appetizer that set the tone for the entire dining experience. These mini sandwiches featured perfectly seasoned minced beef, skillfully prepared so that it was juicy and rich in flavor. Each slider was paired with Ayib, a smooth and creamy Ethiopian cottage cheese that balanced the spices beautifully. Served on small, soft brioche bread, these sliders were an explosion of rich tastes in every bite, leaving us craving more. For the main course, I opted for the Manager's Choice, which is an excellent way to sample some of Café Lalibela's best offerings. The plate arrived brimming with a colorful combination of dishes. The Kye Wat, a spicy beef stew, was the highlight for me. It was tender and deeply flavored, with a gentle heat that didn't overpower the palate but left a pleasing warmth. Next to it was Saga Wat, a stunning spiced spinach dish that brought a freshness and earthiness to the plate. The Tikil Gomen, which is lightly spiced cabbage, was sautéed to perfection, tender yet still retaining a slight crunch. Each component was thoughtfully crafted and together, they created a wonderful medley of textures and tastes. My wife chose the Vegetable Combination, a colorful assortment reflecting the diversity of Ethiopian cuisine. The Fasolia, green beans sautéed with onions and spices, burst with flavor while maintaining their crispness. The Gomen, seasoned collard greens, provided a slightly bitter contrast that worked perfectly with the other dishes. The Misr Wat, richly spiced lentils, was hearty and oh-so-satisfying. Complemented with the beloved Tikil Gomen, my wife's dish was not only nourishing but a celebration of flavors. Both our meals were served with Injera, the spongy sourdough-like flatbread that is a staple in Ethiopian dining. Its delightful texture allowed us to scoop up the dishes with ease, and it was the perfect vessel for all the rich flavors on our plates. Garnished with a fresh salad, our meals felt wholesome and colorful. Inclusion and accessibility were evident in every aspect of Café Lalibela, and I couldn't recommend it highly enough. The friendly service, paired with the stunning array of dishes, turned our visit into a memorable evening. If you're looking to delight your taste buds and enjoy the communal experience synonymous with Ethiopian dining, Café Lalibela should be your next culinary destination!

I had the Lunch Special Sampler. I got Doro Wat (spicy chicken stew), Fosolia (green beans & carrots), and Tikl Gomen (cabbage, potatoes & carrots). I had half rice and half injera (bread). This was so delicious, healthy, and filling. I couldn't have enjoyed anything more!!! It is perfection.

Our group was new to Ethiopian food, so our server suggested a chef's combination of meat and veggies. The stews were rich and flavorful. You eat it by tearing off pieces of Ethiopian bread. Comfortable booths, handmade bowls decorated the walls for authentic atmosphere.

I really struggled to write this review. I've never had Ethiopian food, so I really have nothing to compare it to. I imagine this is some of the better Ethiopian food you'll find in Arizona. However, it wasn't my favorite. It was cool to try something new and the restaurant interior was very unique. The food kind of reminded me of Indian cuisine, the biggest difference being the injera instead of naan. Probably wouldn't come back, but if you're looking for something new, I would definitely recommend this place.

First time at Lalibela, on recommendation form my kids. We arrived at 12:45 on a Sunday afternoon and there were four other tables full, of the available 21 seating areas. We ordered the Vegan deluxe, the beef deluxe and a meat platter. We added a side of rice and an iced tea. Everyone enjoyed their choices, with the exception of very cold injera. Sadly, my gut reacted very violently over the next 12 hours, which was unpleasant for myself and those around me. My gut just didn't feel right for a full 24 hours. It wasn't food poisoning (which I've had once, years ago), just gut wrenching food. Sorry, but no return visit in my future.

First time trying ethiopian food (and i am a typically picky eater) and i LOVED IT! We split a big platter and it was a delightful mix of everything where everyone could find something they liked. I also got an iced chai tea and wow was it yummy. The decor is super cool and there is fun music playing as well which makes it an awesome eating experience. The service was quick and nice, making sure we had everything we needed including refills. I will totally be coming back here again!

First time coming here and I will be back! The beef was AMAZING and so flavorful. The coffee was fantastic as well, it was so rich and exactly what I needed.

We came for my husband's bday dinner. I made reservations a day in advance for 6pm on a Saturday night. I'm glad I did because by 6:30 Lalibela was full. Plenty of parking in the lot out front and the inside is a good size with a nice Ethiopian decor. I was surprised to see carpet since I never see that in restaurants and it was clean! We were greeted when we we walked in and went straight to our table since my brother was there before us. Our waitress was nice and took our drink and food order right away. For our party of 6, we ordered the Lalibela Exclusive platter that feeds 4 plus an extra mild beef stew and spicy chicken stew since we weren't sure if the platter would be enough but it was more than enough. Everything was good except my son and I don't like the taste of goat so we didn't like that dish. But personal preference. Lols My fault for not asking if I could switch that out. Flavor wise pretty good though if I compare it to my fave Ethiopian restaurant in San Diego, that one is a lil more flavorful.

We called about half hour before and made a reservation by phone. I was disappointed that my first order choice of the Seabass was unavailable and my second choice of lamb chops was also unavailable. Not sure if this is because it was a Sunday night and/or we made the reservation immediately before showing up. They were also out of the Melted Cast-Iron Brie Small Plate that we were excited about ordering for the table. We loved this restaurant because of the dark and jungle-themed interior. We were excited to see the bold taxidermy featuring the large cats combined with the ornate, gold- framed dapper animal art hanging on the walls. Another reason to love this spot: hidden inside is an entrance to a secret cocktail lounge, or speakeasy, called "Drop Dead Gorgeous." We also appreciated the entire restaurant centering around a glowing, raw wood-fire cooking pit. We could hear and watch our entrées being prepared. What we didn't love so much: the items that we would've liked to have ordered were unavailable. The price to portion ratio in the small bites could also be improved a bit. Great service from our waitress throughout the evening. We ordered: - Fire Roasted Bone Marrow for the table (3/5) - sourdough toast, jalapeño marmalade with demi. I was so excited to try bone marrow for the first time. It was interesting. Sort of like a mix between butter and fat from a steak. It tasted really good with the spicy jalapeño jelly and bread provided. I expected us to be warm and it came out cold. Still not sure if I like it or not. Maybe I'll give it a second try - White Oak Grilled Chicken Skewers (4/5) - served with shiso leaves, kimchi, shishito peppers. kosho aioli, lemon aioli, ssamjung for the table - Very yummy. We enjoyed these. We had actually changed our mind right after initially putting in the milk bread order for the table and they brought out the milk bread so quickly that our waitress said she would give this to us on the house. - Milk Bread for the table (4/5) - miso tomato butter, almond & Kalamata. Even though we changed our mind and got this sent to our table accidentally, I would order this again. It was very delicious and it comes out as an adorable little tomato shaped and colored milk bread with the toppings looking like the stem on top. So tasty and everybody loved it. A little small for our party of five. - Lemongrass Half Chicken (5/5) - Caramelized carrots, kyoto roasted garlic, mashed potatoes & jalapeno jam. Hubs loved this. He said everything was delicious and went well together. - Bomba Rice x2 (5/5) - Risotto, shrimp, linguica, chicken, piquillo peppers, green peas, kosher aioli & Parmesan. My son and his girlfriend both ordered this and said it was very good. - Shishito Caesar Salad add Chicken Skewers (5/5) - bonito, charred shishito peppers, ricotta salata, tapioca chicharron & togarashi. My daughter ordered this and said it was very good. - Spicy Peanut & Tomato Salad add Chicken Skewers (5/5) - peanut dressing, heirloom tomato, baby gem, daikon radish, onion, mala chile, whipped queso de cabra & sour nut. YUMMMM What a creative and unique salad! So glad I tried it. It has unique flavors that work well with each other and a crunch. There's also some heat that goes along with the salad. I was able to withstand it. My son would probably say it's not spicy at all. I'll be craving this salad for months to come. - Dad or Daddy Specialty Cocktail - bright, buzzed & stoned vodka, apricot liqueur, Riesling cordial, ginger, lime, topped with Red Bull Peach Edition (White Peach) - Fruity Mocktail - I asked the waitress if they had any mocktails and she asked me what I liked and gave me examples. Based on what I told her she brought me out a delicious fruity mocktail topped with fresh mint. Parking along the street at metered parking or in parking garage nearby. We brought family from out of town and had a party of 11 (six adults and five kids). There was a long wait, which we completely understood. We spent the time at the bar where the service was excellent, and the kids browsed the nearby shops. Unfortunately, once we were seated, the experience went downhill. Our server seemed to have little sense of urgency. Everything took an unusually long time, but the biggest issue was the food, which took well over an hour despite being a very simple order of burgers, sandwiches, and other basic menu items. Throughout the wait, we watched tables seated after us receive their food and leave while we were still waiting. The most frustrating part was the lack of communication. Rather than checking in or providing an update, our server was frequently visible chatting with coworkers and rolling silverware. When our food finally arrived, it was at best room temperature, making it seem like it had been sitting for quite a while before being brought to the table. We asked to speak with a manager, who said she would look into it, but never returned to follow up. That lack of acknowledgment or accountability was even more disappointing than the delay itself. We declined the offer of dessert because we needed to get the kids home, yet instead of bringing the check promptly, our server spent additional time clearing the table before finally processing our payment. As someone who has worked as a server, I understand that delays happen and kitchens get backed up. What makes the difference is communication, ownership, and making guests feel like their time matters. None of that happened here. It's unfortunate because we've had good experiences in the past, but this visit left us embarrassed that we chose this restaurant to host visiting family.

According to the bartender, they have ping-pong, pickleball, and a big upstairs outdoor patio with amazing views of Tempe and the surrounding area. There's also a large parking lot, lots of outdoor seating, and even a dog park area, which makes it really easy to spend time here. The bartenders and wait staff were very friendly. Azbel was a great server. I had the bistro steak and fries and the Szechuan lettuce wraps, and both were really good. Portions were generous. During late-night happy hour my total was about $55 for a main entrée, an appetizer, a cocktail, and tip, which felt like a great deal. I was pleasantly surprised that happy hour runs every day Monday through Sunday from 3-6 PM and again from 8 PM to close. I also checked out the event venue on site, and it looks like it would be a great place for a company party, corporate event, or group gathering. I'll definitely be returning in the near future.

Chef Leo is almost always on site, and today was no exception. The air conditioned indoor seating area was bustling. Chef Leo still made the time to speak with every one of us in the room. I cannot say enough good things about out the restaurant, the food, and especially the people. Waiting for the brick and mortar to reopen hasn't been too bad since I can still come here and get everything that makes for a fantastic experience. I'm f you've never been you should go and if you've been, but not to the truck, give it a try. I think you'll be as happy as I am that I came by. Enjoy!

I guess we officially got baptized as Arizonians now!…read more This place was great -- everything tasted incredibly fresh. We tried quite a bit of food, but somehow didn't leave feeling heavy or overly full, which honestly says a lot about how fresh everything is and how it's prepared. It's definitely not fancy design-wise, at least not yet. It looks like they may still be finishing or building out the new restaurant. But that really didn't matter once the food came out. Fresh ingredients, great flavors, and the whole meal felt like getting a little taste of Mexico right here in Arizona. We'll definitely be back

As a health food vegan, I am always on the lookout for food like this: whole foods/plant-based, including some oil-free options. Their whole menu reads like a list of my favorite food buzzwords: buckwheat, lentil cauliflower scramble, sunflower seed meat, local fermented sauerkraut, freshly milled Sonoran wheat; tempeh, sourdough, homemade seeded bread, homemade cashew milk, etc. etc. It was legitimately hard to decide what to get. I went with the baked(!) strawberry banana oat buckwheat pancakes. Super tasty, and a generous portion. I also couldn't resist an oil-free sunbutter cookie (with its wacky bluegreen tinge that was apparently from the sunflower seeds) and also loved the cold brew coffee with cashew milk.

It is a little pricey, however, it's worth the cost. As I mentioned, everything is healthy and made fresh. You can't get that without paying a bit extra Their bread is so good, the chutney is awesome, their little side salads are so tasty. I haven't tried anything here that I have not loved. They are a small husband and wife run business, which is always great to see. They are very friendly people who clearly love what they do. There's limited seating indoors, as it's inside Barnone, but you can easily find places to sit outdoors as well.
