I've pegged this place as being the best and cheapest coffee place on campus. The speed with which they get through the morning rush is astounding. I haven't reviewed this place, yet? What!? Ohhhh, Cafe 101. The truth is that Cafe 101 is the reason I passed some of my classes. Without a steady stream of their caffeinated crack, I could not have stayed awake through the particularly dull moments of "Required Marxist Third World Struggle Political Theory SFSU GE Class." The service is FAST and pretty friendly. The coffee is good. Of the places on campus, this place has the best combination of quality, price, and service. There are several places to choose from when it comes to coffee, and this one is a winner. Cafe 101's house coffee is delicious! It has a hazelnut flavor and goes well when I order it with sugar-free vanilla. Mmm. Their pastries are reasonably priced and well-sized. But, they also have some healthier choices for the calorie-phobes (like me). What's most impressive about this cafe, though, is the staff! After just a few visits, they had my drink memorized. Long ass lines at any part of the day besides when they are closed. They got haagen daz ice cram..nuf said...esp in this weather :) They need more flavors though in addition to just the smaller sized pastries on display. I was getting over a cold and got tea to drink here. The blonde girl and guy with glasses said that it was a .50cent charge for a refill on hot water! I was like WTF its water that comes from the tap that is heated! I said I have the tea bag and cup here, its not like I am asking for a free refill on coffee! I said at Starbucks they do not charge you for hot water refill! The girl said oh I did not know that. Coffee is good, and they give it to you fast! I also like their hot chocolate, maybe more than their coffee, because coffee makes me jittery and I crash super fast on it too. So in general, coffee is either an emergency fix, or something I get only if I'm craving it super bad. I go to this coffee shop at least a couple times a week. The good Great prices Their espresso based drinks are good but can be sweet Fast service, very efficient workers The pastries are delicious and well priced During the school year they're open early and close late The bad I think the employees only make ca minimum wage not sf minimum wage :( The black coffee is horrendous, it tastes like they made a bulk coffee bean purchase sometime in the mid 1990's and are still serving them. This place is definitely the best spot for coffee on campus and the neighborhood in general. I'm a student at SF State and I've been going to Cafe 101 about 4+ times a week for the last two years. The staff are crazy fast like super human fast so the line goes by quickly, which is great if you're in a rush to class. They're also really friendly and most of them even remember my usual order! The drinks and pastries are delicious. I have never posted a review on Yelp before but I signed up just to make this review for my favorite coffeeshop. There are a few things that totally get under my skin about a coffee house. I just learned my biggest pet peeve. Charging me 55 cents for a quarter inch of soymilk at the top of my coffee. Seriously. They offer non-dairy creamer and when I asked what was in it, I was told not to trust it by an employee. They gave me a splash of soy and then charged, no warning. Only, that is how it is since we offer non-dairy creamer. I was one upset vegan. Someday they will get karmic vegan justice for their evil soy-charging ways. read more

Love the iced gators and the vegan donuts. Try the maple. They are a little on the pricey side for something on a campus with broke ass students. But I understand -- they charge about the same as Starbucks and Peet's. The quality is kind of there. Not always the best tasting espresso drink, but they are consistently good. Sometimes they run out of whole milk to make drinks with , which kind of irritates me. But overall yummy drinks and sub-par pastries ... but again the vegan maple donut is amazing and always hits the spot. Iced coffee is a little mehh. I love this place! The coffee is the best on campus and they have a good vegan cookie, but that is only part of it. The people that work there (especially 3 particular guys) are so friendly, funny, fast and truly seem to be having a great time, joking, laughing and carrying on. They are like that first thing in the morning and then, late in the day . . . same thing. I have seen it over and over. They will give you as big a boost as the caffeine in your cup!!! read more

I study at SF state and this cafe is on my way to classes. So, its my regular visit. I always carry cafe mocha with me while I head for the classes in the evening just to make sure that I don't sleep. They have a nice outdoor setting and an entire crowd is of students. I've been going here since 2016 (freshman year for me) and I'm currently a senior (class of 2020!). The prices are affordable and you should always carry cash around you since they do have a minimum card fee of 5 dollars if you try and use card there (but it's really easy to spend that amount if you end up getting two items from the cafe). Very worth your while to come and have this if you just need some breakfast or a pick me up. Just be warned though, during lunch time, the line gets extremely long to the point where it's at the entrance of the Caesar Chavez building but the staff works really fast to make sure the line keeps flowing well. read more

there's usually a long line, but it goes by quick because they're really fast in taking orders. there's at most 6 people taking orders! i really like coming here to grab a cup of coffee/tea in the morning before/after class. this cafe has a variety of teas and not limited to green, black, or red. i also like the banana nut bread they have for $1.50. iced drinks seem really popular here, have to try them sometime. there's a $5 minimum charge to use your card. read more

Cafe 101, oh how I depend on you on early school mornings. You never seem to disappoint me. The coffee and pastries are cheap compared to any other coffee shops. And their stuff is pretty good. There's never a long wait, even if the lines are insanely long. The staff here are quick! They even had a little sticker on their cash registers that said no cellphones allowed. I personally would hate taking an order from someone who was busy chit chatting on their cellphone. Pretty funny. But yea, great place! read more

It's been a while and I've been coming here every other day literally only buying the same drink, matcha green latte. Even though they probably make the drink the same way as Starbucks and Peet's, Starbucks has clumpy matcha powder and so does Peet's and Peet's even tastes a little more bland. Not the best place for coffe in my opinion. I usually get the matcha latte because I just don't like their other stuff, I'm not sure why but I much prefer the one in HSS. It has great donuts, brownies, or other foods. That's a huge plus. Ther eis usually a really long line as well, so try not to block anybody while in line. I LOVE is place!! I go here all the time ever since my coffee maker broke. You can not beat $1.50 for a large cup of coffee. Oh and did I mention the good looking gals working there? I think it must be a requirement for when they hire.. Coffee is good most places on campus, but that extra little ammenity makes it so much better. The snack foods are good too, and decently cheap. Line is always pretty quick, even right before classess start in the morning. Now if only they had a fequent visitors card, I go here multiple times a day.. a real coffee junkie. read more

Why 4 stars: Excellent hot chocolate, love that they have cookies and cream ice cream especially after a bad final, great croissants and pastries, music that they play is always awesome, line is almost always out the door, but I have never stood in line for more than 5 minutes because service is so quick. Best place on campus for coffee. Most times they have 4 on duty, two taking orders and two making drinks so they are quite quick. Their menu is a bit cluttered so it can be difficult to pick out something if you are not familiar with it. The blended drinks only come in large size unlike most places so it's not the best place if you want a blended drink, but don't want some 20 oz of it. One peculiarity that irritated me is that the first time I ordered tea here, they took the tag and string off the teabag. Ok, nice thought to go the "extra mile", but the teabag is not supposed to stay in the water more than a few minutes. I like bold tea like English breakfast but leaving the tea bag in for more than a few minutes will make it bitter and tanic. Same goes for green tea...Without the string, there is no way to take the teabag out to end the steeping. Now I just ask that they leave it. An small annoyance is that they always inform me that an macchiato is only espresso and foam when I order one. Perhaps they have had bad experiences where customers unfamiliar with espresso beverages order them and get a surprise. read more
