I appreciate the varieties of breads and hot & drinks menu; however, the counters (front & back) needs more attention on cleanliness. Also the floor trash around. I observed there are "no waiting" customers, so a staff CAN come out to check and clean counters with a CLEAN designated cloth for wiping. I haven't been here for maybe a year or so, but I was really excited to see the set up and the flow since this particular 85 Celsius is smaller than others you loop into the left and then ring around a circular eight figurine to the cash register on the right. I was sad this particular Saturday afternoon. They did not have any of my sons, favorite barbecue pork buns or different type of savory baked buns, but I was able to get one of the Boba from them. By the register, they also have a kiosk register just for drinks. I decided to order drinks since their Boba drinks are not as expensive as the normal Silicon Valley prices of eight dollars Boba! So I was able to get passionfruit green tea without sugar and light ice for 550! I neglected to order lychee or Boba mainly because the gentleman told me they were still making Boba granted lychee jelly is not the same as Boba. I mentally categorize them the same. The young college students serving me was rather pleasant and friendly, and I was able to get my blueberry tail and be on my way, but I'm really sad. I wasn't able to get a barbecue pork bun for my son. I like the open outdoor area, gated patio area for my puppies to wait outside and everything was clean and nicely kept. Out of all of the Asian bakery chains spread throughout the Bay Area (Sheng Kee, Paris Baguette, Andersen, etc.), 85 Degrees has generally been my favorite. They aren't as good as some of the mom-and-pop shops I usually frequent, but there's obviously something to be said for the benefits that comes with being a big chain. Not to mention the fact that I just thoroughly enjoy some of their offerings (hello, Brioche Bread!). So, needless to say, I was stoked when they finally expanded into SF (and into Stonestown, no less!). In the years since this location first opened, I've been here countless times. Compared to their other outposts that I've been to, this one is easily the smallest, but they still have their usual array of pastries, breads, and desserts. Even still, for better or worse, I rarely ever stray from some of my usual go-to items - the aforementioned BRIOCHE BREAD (so milky and buttery), the SALTED BUTTER BREAD (really soft), HAM & CHEESE (salty and cheesy), and MILK PUDDING (I don't often get this, but I like that the filling isn't crazy sweet). As convenient as this 85 Degrees may be, though, it's also my least favorite. Given how relatively small the store is, everything about this place feels so cramped - the displays are bunched together and, because it's right by the door, you often have to weave around folks that are leaving/looking almost as soon as you step inside. Plus, in part because of the amount of foot traffic that comes through here, it's not uncommon to see empty shelves/trays even during the middle of the afternoon (I assume they have more in the back, just that they aren't prepped or that the workers aren't super quick to restock). Somewhat surprisingly, even to me, I've yet to try any of the desserts and drinks from here, so I can't speak to how they compare. Based on how the former looks in the display case and the photos of the latter that I've seen, though, I wouldn't be opposed to giving them a shot. I just might wait until I'm at another 85 Degrees, if what some of my fellow Yelpers have said about the service is any indication. read more

I was surprised to discover they've invented their very own "meat tax." Yes -- apparently if you buy a cold pastry to-go that happens to have a bit of meat floss in it, they'll tack on sales tax. For anyone wondering, this is not how California sales tax works. According to the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA): * Cold food products and bakery goods sold to-go are exempt from sales tax. (Rev. & Tax Code § 6359; Reg. 1602) * The only time it becomes taxable is if it's sold hot, or as part of a combination meal. (Reg. 1603(e)) * CDTFA even has an annotation on croissants with meat/cheese: hot = taxable, cold = exempt. (CDTFA Anno. 550.1712) So no, a pastry contains pork floss is not a special category of "meat taxable pastry." That's a fiction this bakery has come up with. It's disappointing to see a business either misunderstand or ignore the law, while nickel-and-diming customers with charges that shouldn't exist. I'd suggest they review CDTFA's rules on prepared food before inventing their own taxes. I stopped by here while I was visiting the Stonestown mall and bought a milk tea bun, cheese bread, and lychee green milk tea (large which is 22 oz, iced, 25% sweetness). Milk tea bun: It was actually not that sweet and the custard inside is flavored but it doesn't really taste like tea - it's more like brown sugar if anything. The outside reminds me of walnut bread, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but definitely wasn't what I expected. I personally feel the matcha chocolate bread, which is also sold at this location, is better in terms of the flavor profile. Cheese bread: This was much sweeter than I expected, probably from the custard, and hollow inside so it wasn't as filling or dense as you might expect from the appearance. Not bad, but it just wasn't as salty as I thought it'd be Lychee green milk tea: 25% sweetness actually makes it not sweet so you can taste the tea. But I felt the milk ratio was a bit higher and wish the tea was a little stronger overall so that it would taste fruitier and more fragrant. Overall I thought the food was decent and the drink prices are pretty good for the size. There's a current buy one get one 50% off deal for the strawberry festival which consists of three limited edition seasonal strawberry-focused drinks. The shop is rather small, but they made efficient use of the space to have a decent array of breads available. They have a sign showing the sizes of drink cups toward the pickup side of the counter. I couldn't pass on that. I bought the last two boxes of mochi egg tarts, green tea red bean roll, taro swirl, mango custard bun, hot dog bun, and a coffee cruffin. I also bought a 8 inch tiramisu cake. For drinks, I bought the iced sea salt caramel coffee and iced sea salt jasmine green tea. The mochi egg tarts were the highlight of all the baked good that I bought. They weren't too sweet. The green tea red bean roll was pretty good too. It had a hint of green tea. The rest of the buns were just ok. The tiramisu cake was fresh and wasn't really sweet. The coffee sprinkles on the outside of the cake added a very tasty flavor to the cake. Oh, I haven't reviewed this 85c yet either? I guess now's a good time since I just revisited. It's been at this spot for some time now, and it's a place that's almost always busy since it's right outside of the main Stonestown entrance, next to Blaze Pizza. Compared to some of their other locations, it's not a very big spot, but has enough space for all of the main breads they offer, and also their other stuff such as cakes and so on. There's sparse seating options here, so it's mainly just a to-go location, mainly because the place is smaller than other locations as I've mentioned. Their menu, their breads, everything else, is just the standard 85c catalogue, so I won't comment to much on it since the quality is the same from everything I've tried here. I do feel their drinks here are a bit better than some of the other 85c locations, so that is an upside. One thing to note about this spot specifically, they are very busy, as they're not just in a mall, but in a mall around a bunch of schools and students dropping by here. Overall, good location, and I do like the fact that they tend to replenish their bread stock more often than some of the other 85c locations, even though they're so busy. I've been to other locations where you'll always see at least a few spots empty at a time of bread, but here, it's usually always filled during peak times, or half filled and they're in the process of getting more bread onto the trays. There were a ton of customers (mostly students I think) here getting pastries and drinks and the shelves were full of product. Parking was hard to find in the parking lot as there were many cars circling around looking for parking. I got a couple of pastries to go: Strawberry cream square cake ($3.75) Hokkaido custard bun ($2.40) Croissant crunch ($2.30) Slice of red velvet cake ($4.05) Of everything we got, the strawberry cake and the Hokkaido custard bun were my favorites. In general, I'm a big fan of 85°C. That being said, this location often has empty displays of pastries or old/mislabeled signs on what everything is. It might be a repercussion of high product turnover and lots of business, but I wish the timing of the breads was better managed. The few items I've had here were more misses than wins: the potato croquette was so salty it was nearly inedible and the black forest cake tasted... not as a black forest cake should. It was barely chocolatey, and much more light and fluffy than you'd expect. I'd say it's more of an Asian interpretation of black forest cake, and will not satisfy a craving for it. The egg/custard items tend to be good. The check out lines move quickly and the workers are very efficient. The store does get dirty when it's crowded though (napkins on the floor etc.). read more

It's definitely on the smaller side, but if I'm in the area then I usually stop by to see if anything looks good. You grab your tray and pick up what you want. Everything is individually wrapped. The lines can get long, but they move relatively quick. Remember to bring your own bag! Pros - some unique items you don't typically see elsewhere - good pricing - some items are great, but it takes trial and error to find the ones you like - i like the drinks, especially the cheese salt ones, classic! I randomly chose a variety of pastries including: Spicy Sausage Jalapeño Cream Cheese Milk Tea Bun Taro Swirl Garlic Cheese Hawaiian Chicken Sugar Cream Cheese Brioche This location is much smaller from other 85° Bakeries. They've done away with the use of tongs. Now the pastries are already pre-packaged individually in cellophane wrap on the shelves so you can just grab your pastries and place them on your tray. In the past they packaged them in their clear plastic bags as you paid for them at the register counter. There weren't that many people this morning so i was in and out quickly. It turned out that we stayed in San Francisco longer than expected and didn't make it to Elk Grove for the event.
