They have perfected the art of ignoring the clients. I had to stand up and ask for a refill of coffee while waiting the half hour for the food to come . No excuses for the long wait and no eye contact. The bill finally came and surprise , surprise it was the wrong check . Two people having breakfast in Union NJ shouldn't have to spend $22.50 before the tip. It may not have been the waitress fault so we left a tip but not without a terrible Yelp review. Came here for breakfast for the first time and overall I was disappointed. Ordered a hot latte and the waiter who brought it over stated "it's not my best latte, but I tried". The latte was completely cold. From the momemt I sat down, up until I left, the waiter continuously kept complaining about how short staffed they were. I have worked in the food service industry and understand that it is not easy working when short staffed, however, I would never make any customer have to sit through breakfast listening to my complaints. This "little" place has big taste. Coming from jersey city to an audition . My staff and I decided to come for a bite to eat some where because we are starving. So we chose to go to yelp for some help to find a decent place to eat close since my staff and I needed some time to kill. We chose this place. We loved the red doors and thats about it. Once we stepped in there was one person there so not busy at all,right? ....wrong We sat down at the table and the lady asked us what would we like to drink. Coffee of course. She brought the coffee and cream. But never brought the sugar. So I had to get up walk to another table and kind of take that sugar. We thought maybe she forgot it's fine. Now we order food. Still not busy maybe 3 people Inside. We waited about 45 minutes for breakfast . it doesn't take that long to make eggs and toast. Our food finally came out and we where ready to eat. So now we sit there and look at each other and laughed. I had to tell the lady that we needed utensils to actually eat. She "ohh" . I had go get up and get ask for the ketchup. Even the at the end the waitress never came back. I had to go up to the person behind the register and say can I pay for the food. Can I get the check please . This place was wonderful. I had a latte and for breakfast two eggs, bacon, home fries and Portuguese bread. The prices were great, very reasonable. My husband got steak and eggs for $9.75 which is unheard of where we are from. A generous portion too. We definitely recommend this place and if ever back in the area, we will go. Walked in and no one looked our way. Had to ask one of the waitresses who was very rude if it was self seating or what. Table was dirty and she had the worse attitude when she had to clean it off for us. The waitress that took our order was nice but I think she suspected our initial anger so tried to fix it. Too bad the food didn't help though. Hot chocolate was good. Food...eh! Didn't excite me or have any taste. Had to add condiments like hell and still that didn't help. Like many people who live in Union, you'll know this place as the old "Lea's Cafe." However, I decided today to give Cafe 401 a try for dinner. I walked in to a completely revamped decour -- it seemed they were trying a bit hard to get the "smooth, evening" feel, but I kind of liked it. Illuminated pictures on the walls, cool hanging ceiling lights -- I'm an easy date! I ordered the Portugese steak served with fried eggs on top with a brown garlic sauce (and rice on the side). Needless to say, I was STUNNED. It was TERRIFIC. Steak was cooked just right, the egg was done properly, and the brown garlic sauce was delicious -- rice on the side also was drizzled in the brown wonder sauce. The people there were very nice, giving me plenty of time to order (considering I came at 5:45 and they close at 6). I respect that he didn't try and rush me, and even made the effort to ask how the meal was while I was eating. I have no complaints about 401 Cafe, and I will DEFINITELY be going by again. read more

Great little breakfast place.We came on a weekday morning around 9 and there was hardly anyone in there. Service was great, food was terrific and I liked the vibe. Coffee served in larger mugs and food served on matching plates. I had an egg white omelet with bacon. Came with great hash browns and toast. I left very full. The bill for both of us was $25 including the tip. We will be back. Other reviews caution against the place being crowded. I will keep that in mind during high demand breakfast times. read more

I came here on Sunday and it was pretty full. Luckily a table was getting cleaned when I walked in. The 2 waitresses were quiet but very nice. Our orders were taken pretty quickly as well as getting our drinks. The food took a little longer but with a full house and 1 cook out front and 1 in back (from what I saw) it was to be expected. Frankly I didn't mind anyway. It was a nice place. Waitress did apologize for the delay, which is always nice to hear. Food was delicious for sure though. Had a great "at home" feel. I've become a big weekend breakfast person, diners, bagel shops and such. I live around the corner from cafe 401 and stopped in one morning. The aroma of fresh coffee and espresso being prepared and the open grill loaded with bacon, TAYLOR HAM and other treats had me feeling like I was in heaven. Start with fresh squeezed OJ, can't beat it. The Portugua omelette with chorizo onions peppers and a nice side of home fries, it is the best breakfast in town. You'll pay a extra few bucks over a diner, but the food quality and supporting a local family fun place is well worth it. read more

I would give this place 5 stars if it weren't for the service. While its gotten better recently, the servers can't seem to manage their time efficiently. They are very friendly, but they do seem to struggle with managing the tables. Even with that said, I will continue to come here as I have been every weekend, ever since I discovered this local gem. I always get the same thing- corned beef hash with 2 eggs, home fries, toast and coffee. I normally cringe when served "home fries" because it's usually so bland and mushy. I also avoid ordering corned beef hash because it normally tastes like something out of a can. However, their corned beef hash and home fries are out of this world. So well seasoned and crispy and just plain delicious! Their orange juice is fresh squeezed, no bottled stuff. This place is definitely worth checking out!
