Real nice outdoor feel with an open front. Excellent breakfast (cheap), and brunch on the weekends. Coffee is solid too. Lunch is average. The panini's are decent but I hate that they cook them with the lettuce already on...ruins it. A lot of soccer games shown here, if that's your thing. read more

Had a sandwich here for lunch and was very pleasantly surprised! The place is sort of a super casual coffee shop meets dive bar. They have wifi and a full bar and a few bottles of low end but decent wine like astica. They are open pretty much all day and you order at the counter. Definitely recommend for a casual lunch or some Internet surfing with a coffee! read more

Came here to study on a random morning after the love of my life, Society Coffee, left me. It was alright. The decor is a little dark, and the large tea I'd ordered came in an enormous mug with a small interior. Definitely did not get more for my money. Great cafe, especially for sitting down and doing work (no crime there, it does just happen to be right near a major university). It has a great cafe/lowkey bar feel and the food is good, if expensive for the portions you get. Best little neighborhood cafe I have frequented in a long time. I moved to the area a year ago, and it is so nice to have one place where the staff knows who you are, and asks how you are doing when you come in. The breakfast food is on-par for a dash-in before work croissant/bagel, or a more sit-down and enjoy omelette or quiche. Finally went after work recently and tried the Sangria, which was also very good. Will continue to come back here at least 3 times a week for as long as I live here. read more

This place is a great neighborhood bar and cafe. I really love the atmosphere of the place, it's a hybrid between a coffee house and a bar. I also really enjoy the food and beverages, I've never ordered something I didn't like. I think this place is perfect to chill with friends or just to come by yourself and relax. More recently, I've come here at night and had a very pleasant experience. The drinks aren't too expensive and the vibe at night is overall really nice. Sometimes it's crowded, and other times there's aren't many people at all. I have had some experiences here where I had to wait a while, but hey, it happens. Cozy atmosphere and yes, good coffeeshop music (Norah Jones, Tegan and Sara, etc). I went a little past noon on a Saturday and it was pretty full but not packed. The lighting is dim towards the inside, but the street-side half of the cafe gets enough sunlight for reading. My only frustration was the fact that the "free wifi" is only free Mon-Fri. Otherwise, the Brie & Tomato panini and Black Forest Ham panini we had (just under $8) were pretty good. I could see myself working here for hours without a problem. read more

Popular with the doggie community, Amrita is a relaxed cafe (and bar!) conveniently located at the NW corner of Central Park. There's a bench outside where pups can wait - and still be in view through the big, front windows - while owners dash inside to get their morning brew. Here, the regulars rule and the regular ole coffee does too... strong without being bitter. Their selection of pastries is pretty substantial though Hubby and I can't seem to see past the gigantic chocolate croissants. read more

Hello Management, The 5 starts are for the quality of the coffee and the cute location with the small terrasse by the corner of Central Park. It is been few early mornings in a row I have been there because I fall for the coffee. But today I wanted to share my disappointing experience and feedback, maybe management can take as advises. I run into the coffee shop a little bit before 7:30am on Wednesday morning, see 2 employees inside, the TV turned on, but doors closed, after knocking with insistance for few minutes, finally the women indicated me with her 2 hands fully open the number 10. In between, there is no hours on the door. Well, here is my point, you have 2 employees in the shop, even if they are doing some set up for the opening. Why are you turning down customers? There is not even a table service, you can order your cup of coffee at the counter on the to go. There is also seatings inside and outside after you order at the counter. The food is industrial pastries, my idea, they should replace that by fresh viennoiseries with good croissant. Also do a deep cleaning, but overall the atmosphere is great. Too sad they operate without consistency and random store hours. read more

I was looking for a place to go for wifi, a bathroom, and a caffeinated beverage after work for a few hours and this place fit the bill. The wifi was pretty fast and it was a quirky atmosphere with soccer playing in the background, a few hard core fans rooting on their teams, and a few students reading or working on their laptops. I ordered a chi latte that a saw them pore out of the box, but I wasn't expecting much more than that. I will return if I need some wifi because starbucks is too crowded. read more

Gio is great! If you come here on a week night, he's usually taking orders and being super nice to all the people he interacts with. I love this little cafe, and love it even more when I know people like Gio work here. He's super nice and really cares about his customers. Oh and he makes a great apple cider! I love this place for it's welcoming, relaxed atmosphere. I generally come with my daughter in the afternoons while we wait for my sons to finish school, but I have also been there for lunch, brunch and once for a few beers at night. The food is typical fare but nourishing and tasty. The coffee is good. The prices are very reasonable. There is no better place in the neighbourhood to relax and drink coffee - the only drawback is it can be hard to get a seat sometimes. read more

There are a few other details that make it feel homey, comforting, and familiar: - mismatched furniture. Into it. - Soymilk - futbol on TV, all the time. Unless cash cab is on. - full bar, broad selection - bike-friendly, but don't chain your bike to the fence of the building next door - open late - bookshelf with used books for the browsing - pitchers of water If you live in the area and are looking for a coffee or brunch spot that isn't Starbucks or Toast, check out Cafe Amrita, and tip the staff. When I first moved to NYC over a year ago I searched desperately for a place where I could get a small bite to eat, coffee, and sit with my computer and do work. I looked desperately around for a place I could call my "spot" with no luck, until a cold winter day when I found myself lost in Harlem looking for what would be my first NYC apartment. Cold, tired, and hungry, I busted out my IPhone in hopes of finding a nearby coffee place where I could escape the cold for a moment. Cafe Amrita was one of the first places that popped up, and with good reviews I made my way over, unaware that I was about to find my "spot" without even trying. The warm, cozy atmosphere greeted me as I entered and I knew almost immediately that I had found it! Besides the great food and drinks, Amrita became a place where I could go to read a book, work on my lap top, watch a game, and hang out with friends! The only downside to this place is their lack of electricity plugs, so make sure you computer is fully charged before going! Also, I dig the fact that they let their staff pick the music they play, therefore it can really vary, but they often play it quite loud (including sports games as well) and that might not be your cup of tea. :) read more

This is a great cafe. The sausage, egg, & cheddar on an everything bagel is the best I've evere tasted - and it's not hard to get that easy dish wrong, but it's even harder to get it perfect! The music on Saturday & Sunday AMs is perfect for sitting with a good cup of coffee, reading a great book, and window watching. And their coffee is excellent. Great location - steps from Central Park & only a block from Morningside Park (during the late summer & fall Morningside Park has a nice sized farmer's market). The only reason they only got 4 stars is because 1 of the baristas (who I seem to always get) seems a bit cliquey - she likes her regulars, but isn't friendly otherwise. And they get REALLY crowded for brunch. Definitely a must go to place! read more

This place looks nothing like a sports cafe/bar, other than the two large screens on the walls. It sports couches and small tables and book shelves filled with, well, books. It feels like a coffee house/slash bar with breakfast-y, bar-y food. Thing is, it's an AWESOME place to watch sports, especially soccer. Watched the Euro Final there today with a loud, friendly crowd. The sound on the TV was good, which is kind of rare at sports bars. The owner tried to accommodate as many folks as possible and rearranged the furniture in the process. After the game, when the crowd thinned out, my friend and eye enjoyed a nice panini and salad as the place magically turned into a kind of indie-feel cafe. Very good place. read more

Cafe Amrita is a nice neighborhood coffee shop and bar. Good space with natural light and plenty of cafe style table seating. Decent coffee and baked goods (don't seem to be made on site). Jazz on the stereo with a frequent french angle. Usually a heavy neighborhood vibe with a helping of Columbia academics and smaller helping of international tourists from Astor Hotel down Central Park West. Staff always seem cordial. Laptops welcome except during weekend crushes. Open wifi. All very comfy and sensible. read more

Simple, clean, friendly, inexpensive, cosy. The soups are quite good. The sandwiches are solid and are of good quality. The quiche is very, very good. The fact that a side salad is provided with every sandwich is commendable. Reasonable beer/drinks selection and price. This place has a lot of potential. It has a decent amount of outdoor seating next to the park, which makes for a pleasant experience when the weather is nice. And it has a chill yet interesting indoor vibe. But the service is subpar. There's a woman at the counter who seems too hard pressed for time to take your order. As if you being there is burdensome to her. And there's a guy who goes around during the weekend and asks people to put away their laptops during brunch hours. I think that's a fair policy, but they never specify what brunch hours are. So they can ask someone to put their laptop away at 4:00, when in most people's minds, that's not brunch hours anymore. read more

The service has always been pretty bad, been a few times and I really want to feel at home here but so far have experienced service that seems not to care about my business. They have all these rules about certain times during the week of when you can use the internet. I understand why but they are kind of militant about it. Starbucks never gives you a hard time about anything and I always feel welcome. Today I had the worker get really snotty about having my mug outside. I guess they can get a ticket or something but I didn't know that and it could have been relayed in a way that made me feel like they want my business. I watched her shortly after dealing with me, approach a girl in a not so friendly way about buying something and didn't even remember that the girl had just bought and finished a sandwich 10 mins before. I own multiple service related businesses and I would have fired her on the spot for treating someone the way she did me today. Again, I really want to love this place because it's close to my house and it is very cozy inside. So far, with the exception of the guy that is sometimes here, everyone else doesn't seem to like their job. I'll give it a try a few more times and if the service continues this way then Starbucks will win again. read more

I've been a customer here for the last 4 years and I love Cafe Amrita. I know the owner and all the staff, they're wonderful people and work tirelessly just like everyone else - people here need to cut them some slack. If you're ordering food you need to understand that they have a very small kitchen and your food will be ready when it's ready. In 4 years only once have I had that happen to me and you know what, I lived! I was Ok. On the other hand; the food has always been decent, the coffee great and what I love more than anything is the comfortable atmosphere where you can splay out for a few hours to study/work/read/relax. Yes, the wi-fi is on Monday-Fridays only, but does it really kill you not log onto the internet for two hours? It also gets packed during brunch Saturdays and Sundays so if you're looking for a quiet place to work you're prob better off somewhere else. They have a prix-fix brunch menu that includes non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages and a solid choice of breakfast dishes as well as Happy Hour every day 4-7pm. I love Cafe Amrita, I've seen the business grow in the past few years and I'm happy that all the hard work the owner and his staff put into it is paying off. read more
