Cute little cafe right near Columbia University and Mount Sinai Morningside. Always has ample seating, typically never too busy when I go. They carry a variety of food options ( sandwiches for both breakfast and lunch, pastries, desserts, yogurt parfaits, bagged snacks). I love getting a London Fog (earl grey tea lattee basically) and a greek yogurt topped with berries and nuts with a little side of honey drizzle that they keep in their refrigerator. In the summer time they leave their windows open and it becomes the coziest place for a breakfast or study date. I will say the only reason I can't give this place 5 starts is because their food from the kitchen does tend to have a distinct smell to it - like remnants of the equipment they use in the kitchen or something. I can't quite put it into words. And secondly, they do take a while to make the food and drinks. So if you're in a rush - this might not be the best go to place. read more

The coffee and breakfast goods here are the best! It used to be the old Artopolis cafe but I really like the new revamped space. I'm also glad they decided to keep the crepes (both the sweet and savory) which were always my favorite. I noted they're bringing back the wine soon as well! Besides this, they have a nice range of pressed sandwiches, flatbreads and salads for lunch, a little on the pricey side but this is the Columbia area after all. Staff is always warm and there's ample seating available. Only suggestion I have is to improve the cleanliness of the coffee supplies' section as it tends to look a little crazy in the mornings. read more

This is a solid Breakfast/Brunch place with a lot of quick and simple options. The redone interior is preferable to the old Artopolis interior; there's a lot more room. It's a good place to stop for coffee and quick pastries in the morning. They also have heartier offerings (quesadillas, crepes, sandwiches) which I've yet to try but seem pretty straightforward and hard to mess up. There's a lot of variety for whatever you're in the mood for. The staff is very friendly and helpful, as well. Lots of light and it seems like a pretty good place to work. Plus, they offer 20 oz coffee sizes (a necessity as a college student)! A good option for if you're on the go! read more

A bit overpriced in my humble opinion. I ordered lox, cream cheese, and tomato on an everything bagel. What I thought looked like the standard nyc amount of lox, ended up being 1/2 the amount with the other 1/2 being tomato. Furthermore, the bagel was kind of hard, instead of being soft and chewy on the inside. For the price, $9.53 with tax, this sandwich should have come with a free coffee. read more

I've gone here several times to get some food or something to drink when I'm in the area for appointments. I (for the most part) get the same drink, I've gotten it more than once, a frozen chocolate (drink). Just recently I ordered that and was given a frozen chai, this is the second time this happened and I mentioned it was the second time THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED, and the woman who took my order had an attitude and told the woman who made my order that I said "frozen chai," like if I was purposefully trying to cause an issue and I was lying about what I ordered. I did not say "chai," I said "chocolate." Clearly, I wasn't heard properly, but no need to have an attitude. read more

Though my first review was published in in July, it was actually for my experience here in Jan/feb. I came back recently and ordered the same thing, only to find that some of the options had changed. For one thing: they actually give you a coffee now which comes along with your order, that is alright. However, it doesn't do that much for me since I don't drink a ton of coffee. The breakfast sandwich however has changed- specifically, sausage and the wrap have changed. In the past, they used to give you a real sausage. however, now it's all chopped up and spread throughout the egg and cheese, which I'm not too wild about. Secondly, it's no longer served on a bagel, but instead a tortilla flower wrap (as mentioned, it has become some sort of breakfast burrito). I ordered delivery from here and the food was absolutely terrible. I order a bacon, egg, and cheese on a plain bagel with cheddar cheese and tomato. American cheese was put on my sandwich I instead of cheddar, and I did not receive the tomato. The eggs tasted like the eggs they make at McDonald's, a soft round tasteless egg circle. Cute little cafe conveniently located right by Columbia. Lots of seating of available, which makes it a good spot to catch up with a friend or study. Also has lots of food options, from burritos to salads - good for breakfast or lunch. We came around midday so we got tea and some pastries. The pastries are a little pricey but so good. Highly highly recommend the carrot walnut bread - moist and not too sweet or oily. The coffee streusel and Nutella croissant were good too but too sweet for my liking. Warning: the hot water they use for tea is HOT, like burn the roof of your mouth so you can't taste anything hot. I had the cap off and still couldn't drink for an hour. This is a small coffee shop in the Morningside Heights neighborhood north of UWS in NYC. Recently called Artopolis Espresso, this place has been renamed to The New York Basics. Stopped by the other day for a cup of coffee. They have omelets and the usually morning bakery goods as well. I just went for a quick cup of good coffee in this area while at work. Ordered a medium roast (they only have medium or dark roast, no light/blonde roast). Coffee was 7/10, which is pretty decent. Can smell aromas of the beans and taste it with every sip, definitely not burnt or anything outrageous! Plenty of syrup options if you want. I just add skim milk. Service was quick, efficient, and delightful. 100% will be back for some baked goods and coffee. I didn't get any food, but it looked really tempting from the display! read more

Cute cafe near Columbia, could definitely see sitting here and trying to get work done. They have a surprisingly decent food selection given the size of the place. I like their crepes and their frozen chai is amazing! Seems a bit expensive but on par with the rest of the area. Cafe definitely operates on the assumption you're taking things to go. Crepes come in a massive plastic box which weirdly doesn't fit into their trash can (which is a hole in the countertop). I know it's an odd thing to comment on but given that it's such a nice space it seems weird that there isn't a "for here" friendly option. read more

Located near my graduate classes, I have come to New York Basics a few times.  The facility is large with several chairs so it is pretty easy to find seating.  There is a large selection of pastry baked good which are pretty average and sometimes on the boarder of stale, a variety of crepes, bagels, eggs and omelets.  The coffee is sometimes excellent and other times OK.  I will return here, but I don't go out of my way since there are better options. read more

I've tried this place a few times and really wanted to like it, but the food is just not good. Any items with eggs are just gross. The egg whites are very watery and the eggs in bagel sandwiches are rubbery. A lot of the veggie items have very odd combinations of food that just don't go well together. Very nice spot to go for, either a quick bite and or u can stay and enjoy your meal, they have outside seating... i love they coffee...no place locally around Columbia University is there coffee this good. Nothing against the other local stores. In my opinion if u ever want a strong bold good delicious drink try ordering the greek Frappe..or the Freddo cappuccino. no words can define them unless you try them for yourself. Ordered from too good to go and the girl in the shop really seemed bothered. I walked in and said "hi, I have an order from--" and she cut me off after seeing me take out my phone to show her the order by saying "tap to collect and swipe". Didn't even let me finish my sentence. As if she really didn't give a fuck and had better things to do. So I did as she said and she walked away from the counter. From a distance she told me to pick a bag and I was confused. So I walked over to where she was and there were two bags pre packed and she told me to pick on. I did and said thank you and walked out. She couldn't even be bothered to hand me a bag. Wanted me to pick a bag from a table and just pick it up and leave. Very quick but felt like she didn't want me there and was annoyed with my order. Can't remember her saying anything hospitable like "have a good day, you're welcome" or anything of the sort. Left me feeling a bit odd. I understand that too good to go may be a thing where people are playing food order roulette but I still paid money for it and expected to be treated like a normal customer as opposed to someone who's getting free food. She kinda treated me like I was asking for charity and how she wanted me out the store so quickly. Other than that, I got a nice berry yogurt and Nutella breakfast bowl, two stale af raisin bagels and a chocolate croissant for $5 on too good to go. If you can stand the attitude and being treated like they don't want your business, I guess you'll find something nice here at the end of the day. read more

This was a truly awful experience. This place used to be lovely when it was Artopolis - delicious crepes, food served on actual plates, and table service. Now they seem to be trying to save money - and it really shows. First, the only wine available were mini-bottles of Barefoot wine. When I asked for a glass, the man behind the counter told me to drink it straight out of the bottle, or off-handedly said I could grab a paper coffee cup. So I grabbed a paper cup off the espresso machine, and ended up drinking cheap rose out of a paper cup, like I'm in a college dorm again. Second, I ordered the 'Cali omelette' which was advertised as an egg white omelette with goat cheese and avocado. After five minutes the guy yells my name, and I go to pick up what I was hoping would be a delicious omelette. Instead, it's a tiny, clearly microwaved, rubbery and tasteless item I would hardly call an 'omelette' with a few slices of avocado - again, completely tasteless - and a few rounds of goat cheese on the side. To top it all off, it was served in a plastic to-go container, and I was given a tiny plastic knife and fork! I felt like I was in an airport terminal - and a bad one at that. I honestly have no idea what the owners of this place are thinking. What was wrong with the lovely Artopolis? Some advice from an unhappy customer: if you're serving crepes and omelettes, you need to put the food on real plates and give people real knives and forks to eat with. If you serve wine, you need to provide people with wine glasses. No-one wants to drink straight out of a tiny bottle of Barefoot wine like an alcoholic. And you need to have chefs cooking the food, not just someone microwaving a sad pre-packaged, barely edible item. Needless to say, I will never go back again. read more

I did feel that the food was pretty overpriced...I ordered the Acai bowl and was not super impressed with that as it was watery instead of tasty. This place looked lovely and a welcoming place to work for the morning. All of that was fine, but I was way disappointed with my Classic two eggs and cheese on a bagel. It was clear they microwaved a pre-made egg circle on my bagel, with the result that my bagel was chewy and difficult to eat before I finished the first half. Any NYC deli with a grill would do a better job. I am posting this here in hopes they reconsider this menu item. read more

This place is awesome, they have the best crepes. The Nutella parfait is the best. I really recommend this place. The workers are so nice and polite. Octavio is one of them. He is soo nice with customers. I call today to ask if they had any Nutella parfait left and he told me they didn't, but he ask me how many i wanted and that he will make them for me, so i order him 5 and by the time i got there they were all ready and fresh. I notice some of the other bad reviews and they seem really picky and pretentious which to be honest most people on yelp are.
