I realized the other day I was long overdue to acknowledge my adoration for one of the five boroughs' best restaurants - FIELDTRIP (original and premiere location in Harlem) - so a friend and I had lunch here on 4/25/26. Read on if you desire genuine knowledge and only dine out with intention. First, and most importantly, shouts to Myles and the team working this day. The salmon in my Jerk Salmon Bowl and my friend's Atlantic Salmon Bowl was flaky, tender, juicy, and perfect. The rices (white with Jerk, black forbidden with Atlantic) confirmed and celebrated what Chef JJ Johnson wrote in his must-have book The History of Rice. This is to say there is no rice like FIELDTRIP rice: soft, sturdy, sweet, savory, herby, attaches to sauce and protein and vegetables when you want it to, remains on its own when you simply want to enjoy it by itself. The plantains and greens that accompany are ridonkulous icing on the salmon sundae. If you aren't a fan of Brussels sprouts, you likely have good reasons. And, you owe it to yourself to order Crispy Brussels. Besides being cooked so they are toothsome, textured, and still sweet, they're quartered or sixthed, which makes them easier to enjoy and perfect carriers for the crispy bits that top them. I love oxtail. To enjoy this rarely served beef element in a perfectly wrapped and fried egg roll added to my adoration. After bite one, I literally unwrapped my half to see how the shredded meat was coexisting. No saucing was necessary, though the Avocado Cilantro and New Jack Sticky BBQ (both of which were enjoyed by me via spoon) would have enhanced the roll most righteously. Lastly, when you dine in or take away from FIELDTRIP, you need Nana's Bread. It is what you might enjoy if a freshly made flour tortilla, naan, pita, and focaccia met, joined, and were put through a presser. I would dip and dredge Nana's Bread in everything. I was looking for something different for lunch on my last day in Harlem and stumbled upon Fieldtrip! The reviews were convincing, so I decided to give it a try. This place was literally a two-minute walk from my aunt's house. The inside was nice and spacious with plenty of seating. I decided to take my order to go. I got the oxtail egg roll and the mambo-glazed roast chicken bowl. The egg roll was not as good as I anticipated. It was missing something, and I can't quite identify what that something was. I was here early on during the Field Trip wave and was happy to be part of it. Now I'm back with an updated review, though my visits have become less frequent than in previous years. In short, it seems that recipes, portions, and menu options shift over time in ways that leave customers holding on to the memory of those first great experiences--only to find it has slipped away. For the last five or so visits, the fish (which is the only thing I eat here) has consistently been extremely salty. The last time, I had to throw it away. The balance of rice and vegetables used to be even, but now it's more like 80/20--mostly vegetables. The greens aren't chopped well and are undercooked, making them harder to digest. This isn't a critique of the customer service or the staff, who remain kind and helpful. It's more of a reminder that things change--and not always for the better. read more

The cashier I dealt with was very rude and impatient. I walked 10 blocks with an arm full of groceries to support this black business over Chipotle or any of the other fast casual places that were closer to me, but I'm sorry, I can't see myself coming back here after that interaction. I wanted to do the build-a-bowl option, and I'm not sure if I was taking too long for her liking, but after i listed the first 3 items I wanted in the bowl, the cashier very rudely cut me off and said, "ma'am that's already on the menu" and she pointed to a bowl on the menu. I didn't even finish telling her what else I wanted in the bowl. I didn't realize there a similar bowl to what I was ordering. It's not like I have the menu memorized. Mind you, I was the only person on line at this point. Even if there were other people waiting to order, I was perfectly fine to step to the side, while the next person ordered. So sensing her impatience, I just went with the bowl she pointed to, but as she was putting in the order, I noticed the sauce had avocado in it, and I'm allergic to that, so I told her I didn't want the avocado cilantro sauce. She rudely interjected "that's what it comes with." I politely informed her of my allergy, so she said they would remove the avocado sauce, but didn't offer an alternative and just told me the price of the order. I'm sorry, but am I meant to enjoy a dry $14 rice bowl? I asked if they could replace the avocado sauce with another one. She said yes. I briefly looked over the sauces, and asked if she had any recommendations for a good sauce to replace the avocado one, and she just said, "just pick whatever you want." So rude and dismissive. I wanted to try the mango chow and yuca chips, and maybe a drink, but that lady was so rude, I just wanted to get my bowl and get out of there. Now, onto the food. The last time I had been here was maybe one or two years ago, and I was reluctant to return because, even though I liked the flavors of the food (LOVED the rice and greens), the chicken was dry and rubbery, and almost inedible. I came back after that and decided to try the coconut sticky rice bowl. I didn't like that one at all and couldn't finish it. But I decided to try this place again because I happened to be in the area, I love rice bowls, and Chipotle's gotten more than enough of my money. The chicken I ordered this time around was cooked much better than the last time I was here. The sauce and the pickled onions were the most flavorful part of the dish. The portion, however, seemed much smaller than I remembered. The jollof rice was really good the last time I was here, so I made sure to order it again, but I was surprised there was so little rice in the bowl. The tagline is "rice is culture," so I would have expected the rice to make up the majority of the dish. The collard greens were also what I remembered liking from before. I generally don't like collard greens, but I REALLY like the way they were cooked and flavored the last time I came here. To the point where you have to chew for like 5 mins. I like al dente greens, but not this al dente. Fish was overcooked, also adding to the chewiness of the whole meal. My jaw got a good workout here. Rice was surprisingly bland and has a weird/overcooked texture. Like they didn't get the rice/water ratio right. Sauces are quite good, and are very much needed in the rice. My son ordered chicken and it was good. Service was great and there were seats inside if you wanted to eat in, but we took ours to go. JJ is known for his rice but his beef dishes are my favorite. I seriously schedule a visit to Fieldtrip in my NYC itineraries - it is that serious! Fieldtrip was my excuse to visit Harlem. His restaurant is steps away from 116th subway station on the 2/3 line which was an easy trip from Harold Square. The braised beef bowl is like nothing I have ever tasted. The beef falls apart and the bowl is full of veggies, rice, and beans. Healthy and yummy - can't beat it! It is more than enough food for a very hungry adult, but I always add a side of fried chicken. Again - so much food. My only critique is that they did not have crab pockets. The customer service is great and I received a $5 birthday discount because I signed up for the loyalty program back in December. Can't wait for my next trip to NYC for this amazing food! read more

For my Harlem excursion with my partner, I decided to choose Fieldtrip as the lunch destination because 1) going to Harlem with someone who grew up in Harlem is a field trip in itself and 2) my partner and I wanted something light after having heavier food the day prior. Our first impression when we arrived: Fieldtrip is a causal spot tucked away from the hustle of 125th street and a departure from the standard soul food you'll get in the rest of Harlem. There was no line and we ordered two fried chicken bowls and a seafood gumbo. We took a seat, waited for 20-30 minutes (which I found to be a bit long), and our food arrived, brought to us by one of the staff members, to our table. The fried chicken bowl was average. I don't know what I expected but I sure didn't expect the bbq fried chicken to taste like Americanized General Tso's chicken without the grease (I don't think the vegetable choice or the aromatics helped). Not to say the chicken tasted bad, it was not what was advertised. At least the texture of the chicken was nice with a slightly crispy exterior and tender interior. I felt that the rice tasted more interesting than the chicken. The seafood gumbo was decent and the chilis lended a mild and pleasant spice to the mix. While I've never had gumbo before, my gut tells me there's likely better gumbo out there. But for a first-timer like me, this will suffice. I don't think Fieldtrip is the place to go to when you're taking a special trip to Harlem. If you're in Harlem often and you need an affordable, decent, and clean meal, I wouldn't knock Fieldtrip out of the equation. As for me, I don't think I'll be back. read more

Yesssss Chef JJ!!! So glad to have this spot in Hatlem. Thankfully Field trip is one of a few places in Harlem that hits the mark when it comes to consistently flavorful, simple but high quality, healthy meals! I cannot rave enough about the food at this place. It's really all worth trying. While the bowls may look small, they really are packed with goodness and are very filling. The service is friendly and welcoming which is always a plus. However, the delightful combinations of flavor are what will keep you coming back. It certainly doesn't hurt that the owners are connected and invested in the Harlem community. The location is in central Harlem near the bustle and hustle whilst easily accessible by public transportation. The restaurant is clean but should you decide to opt for the takeout, all of your items are very well packed. No spillage here. While the cost is not cheap, neither is the food offered so you'll be happy to shell out for tasty morsels that will dance on your tongue. Field trip is definitely worth the trek! I am highly disappointed as I was anticipating trying this place. The actual restaurant is spacious with good ambiance. However, the lack luster attitude of their staff permeates the air. The young lady at the cash register was more interested in texting on her phone than actually taking my Order to the point where I had to remind her that I also Ordered the dragonfruit lemonade when she was handing me my order - she went "oh yea I forgot !" The gentleman preparing my food grabbed a piece of salmon from a metal tray that was on a shelf put it into a plastic container to warm it up. He also didn't seem to know what went in the bowl itself and kept glimpsing I suppose at an order sheet. The rice containers that house the rice for the bowls were not even closed properly with rice spilling out of the sides and into the covers - that should have been my warning. In retrospect I should have stayed so Atleast I could have possibly got my money back but I decided to head home a quick 45 min journey away to enjoy my food. The actual presentation is nice but the veggies are underdone and fibrous. The worst part is that the rice itself was spoilt - sour as we call it in the Caribbean and slimy which means it's been bad for quite some time. I was not able to eat any of it. Such a waste of money and time. I saw a previous review which stated that their kid had found a roach in their bowl and I couldn't believe it as the other reviews seemed so positive . After my experience it is definitely probable particularly with such a lack luster staff who clearly take no pride in the food they put out ( Serving spoilt rice to patrons ), lack of cleanliness and an absence of management at this business.
