I found myself looking for brunch on a Sunday morning and found this spot. I like the charm of the building, reclaimed brick - old St Paul feel. It's easy to get to, off Grand and 7th. We found street parking within 4 blocks. The neighborhood is definitely getting revitalized and I'm excited to see this charming corner spot filled with people. It is a smaller cafe so I would not recommend a large group. I like that you order at the counter and find a spot. I did not go for the fancy s'mores or rainbow lattes. They looked beautiful, too pretty to drink. I got a Macchiato- it has a slight amaretto flavor with the bitter espresso and creaminess of the milk, it came together well and was super delicious. I would definitely get it again. I ordered a crepe as well, the bacon, cheddar and egg. The crepe itself was slightly sweet and fluffy. A little thicker than the ones from the French stand at the state fair. It was good. The fillings were just so so though. It needed a sauce or a rich creamy oozy cheese. It was very plain. Overall I would come for a cup of coffee again but might skip the food. Love the spot and location though and I will be back! read more

I have been wanting to come here for quite some time after seeing pictures on yelp and instagram. I finally decided to venture here yesterday early afternoon. I was surprised that it was busy but not overly busy so we were able to get a nice seat right away. So that was a win! I ordered the rainbow latte (I had to see it in person!) and the Nutella, strawberry, and banana crepe. My husband ordered a cappuccino and the strawberries and cream crepe. The rainbow latte is so gorgeous you don't even want to drink it. And honestly, I wish I hadn't. The magical looking drink does not taste magical at all. The peppermint flavor has a very "fake" taste to it and just tastes all wrong and overpowers everything else. The slight coffee flavor that I got wasn't the best either. Not a bad coffee, but far from what I would consider good coffee. My husband's cappuccino was ok. I make better ones at home with my Nespresso machine for a quarter of the price. Both of the crepes were pretty good. Mine was gooey with Nutella and I'm not sure you could possibly make that taste bad even if you tried. So in the end, will I be back? No. Definitely not. This place has the tastiest and prettiest lattes I've ever seen. I thoroughly enjoyed getting breakfast here with my friend when we were visiting St. Paul. First off, this place is so cute and definitely worth visiting at least once. I went with my family and we got 2 drinks to start, one was just an iced white mocha and the other was the matcha 2.0. I don't like matcha but my mom and sister enjoyed it so much and with looks like that they got plenty of pictures. For food we got the ham cheese and egg crepe, the pimento cheese and bacon and two dishes from the place next door as well. Coffee was cold and tasted like Folgers coffee for the price of a cup should of been caribou, which is way better. 2.the The croissant sandwich was basic egg over medium slice of cheese and bacon that still had tons of grease which made it taste like I was eating lipstick. The sandwich could've been better if it had I don't know something called mayonnaise or a custom chive mayonnaise. The bowl of fruit was slimy and very gross. The smoothie bowls left a lot to be desired. The Manila mango smoothie bowl was a weird consistency and VERY sweet. I also struggled to find granola in my bowl, which was unfortunate because it really need a crunchy element. We wanted to try the oatmeal, but they ran out. The cashier doubles as a barista, so I waited 5-7 minutes before they were able to take my order. It was busy, so no problem, but maybe a little sign that says "hey, you're not doing anything wrong, we just need a couple minutes to catch up on orders.. brb to take your order" would help. The woman in front of me in line turned to ask me if she was supposed to type in her own order on the iPad, so I know I wasn't the most confused person in the room I only saw street parking, so you may have to circle the block a couple times to find a spot. read more

New mom and baby in tow review (skip if you are looking for a food or coffee review): One thing I'm discovering as a new mom is how baby friendly or not so friendly places are... I'm a first time mom and wish that there were more reviews on this little tidbit. I'll be adding this to all my review from here on out!! Baby questions: Is it baby friendly? 4 out of 5 stars. Is there anywhere to fit a car seat? Yes but space is limited and it can be very busy at times. They have small tables and chairs. There are a few window seats that have booth seating. I'd suggest going at a odd time of the day during the week. Weekends would be too crowded. Is it too noisy? I would say it's what you would expect at a typical busy coffee shop. They don't have blaring music or live musicians. Do I feel comfortable and accepted having a baby in tow? Yes. Some locations may be a bit too fancy or turn their noses up on lugging a baby into their establishment. We didn't feel this way one bit. -------------- We went on a Wednesday midday and everything worked out and was low stress. Cafe Astoria is definitely a unique place filled with a variety of options. We went around 12pm on a Sunday and it was a little challenging to get a table to sit at-it's a first come first serve, seat yourself set up. It is a little small so it can get tight. That being said we were all very happy with our food and coffee drinks. They were out of oatmeal so all of their oatmeal dishes were not of service. After conversing with a regular she said that they are frequently out of oatmeal, even at opening hours. It is a shame they do not continuously offer their oatmeal dishes as they are unique and sound great. The ambiance is very cool. Very unique little spot in St. Paul.
