Was taken here for Valentine's Day this year and I understand that is a busy day for the restaurant business, but cannot be an excuse for poor service, poorly cooked/spoiled food, and overcrowding. The dining room had live music, and the band was great don't get me wrong, but was so loud even being at the back of the room they played in I couldn't hear my date across the table. They also overcrowded the room to the point that guests rear ends/stomachs were squeezing over the table due to the close quarters. Even being a slender female myself it was impossible to get in or out of that place when a good majority of the seats are taken. They definitely needed to modify the layout a bit. Our server, although I know they get busy was nowhere to be found. Never checked on our food, waters and cocktails empty and spoke so quietly you couldn't even understand her. Also when making the reservation there wasn't a disclosure that they were limiting/modifying their menu so not all menu items were available that evening. They had some "specials" that I believe they were trying to turn over quickly since the food was spoiled. I was recently able to try Cafe Centro at Northwood's Candlelight Historic Holiday Home Tour. For an additional $40 we were able to visit and sample food at seven different restaurants before the home portion of the tour. Located at the end of the street Cafe Centro has recently gotten a renovation after one of the owners left. The result is a gorgeous dining room with floor to ceiling windows that look out past the street down to the water. Executive chef, Jamie Steinbrecher is running the kitchen having come from Okeechobee Steakhouse where he worked the last 12 years. At night you can enjoy live entertainment from the piano bar. Our sample dish was the meatballs with wine. Although the meatball was not my favorite bite of the night the gorgeous dining room makes me want to come back and try more of the menu. read more

Delicious ...delicious ...delicious...I had the grilled oysters which I love in New Orleans and can't find anywhere in S Florida. I was so excited to find them on Cafe Centro's menu. I went on a nice Saturday evening and sat outside. Drinks were half off which was a plus. The oysters were grilled to perfection and were delicious . The toasted bread and salad that accompanies it was also great ! Service was also superb! I will definitely return and can't wait to try additional items on the menu. read more

What a pleasant surprise this turned out to be! Café Centro was recommended to us by friends who put together a group dinner on a night when it was pouring rain! NEVER AGAIN!! If there was less than one star I would give it to this place. We ordered ink squid pasta but instead got pasta in tomato sauce. When we pointed this out to the waitress she summoned the manager. The manager's excuse was "I just learned we were out of ink squid pasta". The waitress didn't know either so they just decided to substitute our order with what they had on hand! Advice : if you you are out of a dish (which can happen) let your customers know and have them choose an alternative. Don't just pick something you decide. We were with another couple and didn't want to hold them up so we decided to stay with what we were served. Big mistake! It was awful, mushy pasta with the chewy sea food. Completely tasteless. I can make a better pasta dish at home in 15 minutes. Recipe: boil water, throw in linguine, open a can of clams, dump on linguine, drain and dress with olive oil. Guarantee you this will be better than what Cafe Centro serves. At the end of this we got a bill with nothing comped. For 4 of us , it was $420, or $105 per person . read more

This is the first time I've ever had to pay for bread in an Italian restaurant. We asked for bread and were given 2 choices, puff bread or crostini, both for a price. The crostini was $2 for 4 pieces. I can afford that but I would have appreciated regular bread that was gratis and given the option for specialty bread if I chose. We love Café Centro so much and would give 5 stars except for our to-go pizza orders. I am writing this out of complete disappointment for something that should be so simple. We always order the same pizza and it is always missing the garlic, basil or both. Which is part of our four toppings. When I call in the order, I ask that these are explicitly included, since they so frequently are not but we pay for them. We also always ask for our pizzas to be well done because otherwise, they are soggy. I was going to order online tonight but it's typically less when you call to place the order. It was $22 for a medium with four toppings online and I called to place the order but didn't get a price because the large we usually order is less than $25. When my sister picked it up for me, she said it was $25+ so I called the restaurant. The manager I spoke to was horrific and a complete A**hole. He clearly hasn't worked in hospitality before or interacted with humans. (I know, I was in the industry for years). I wish I had gotten his name but he was silent and unresponsive on the other end. I spoke to the owner, who we know from going to Centro so many times over the years. He could not have been nicer. He is so absolutely lovely as are all the staff, except for the person that answered the phone tonight. The major problem, besides the discrepancy in price, is that when I got to my sister's and opened the pizza, it was MISSING the basil and was not well done. They clearly don't care about their long-time customers. Or getting orders right. It's simple, follow the order and include all the toppings. This is ridiculous. Holy wow!!! Ok the vibe and the music were completely awesome but I want to talk about the food. There was 7 of us and we all are raving about the food. And we're foodies. We were there this past Saturday night and were looking forward to a great meal. We had made reservations for 10 and were promptly seated. The wait staff was good but the meal was not and not just for one of us. My husband asked for the veal chop medium rare and it was well done. Two of the other meals were sent back. I would give 5 stars to food, service and music but proprietor is the worst. We had a 7:30 reservation for six people in the bar area. When we got there, we were told our reservation was cancelled. Really? We did not cancel so who did? We were made to feel like we were in the wrong, no apology, no " sorry this is a misunderstanding", we were basically told " tough luck". They did find us a table in the jazz room, which turned out to be great, but we came for the music and dancing in bar area. The host was warm and inviting and kept checking in on us and our server was equally kind and friendly and on top of our drinks. I understand why people like it here. Makes sense. Authentic Italian food, good singer at a piano bar, lots of music to dance to with your date. But I just didn't have a great experience. My girlfriend and I were in WPB for the Palm Beach Half Marathon and were looking to carb load, so she grabbed a groupon to the restaurant. However, we got there late and Café Centro was closed. They graciously allowed us to use the groupon in the piano bar, but seeing as how they were connected, maybe it wasn't such a generous move. In any event, they sat us at a 2-top between the piano and bar on the edge of the dance floor. Firstly, the music. It was good, and the singer was talented, though he reminded me a bit of a cross between Mario Lopez and the singer of Sexual Chocolate from "Coming to America." Anyway, he didn't actually play the piano the vast majority of the time. Except for the last 3 or 4 songs, a karaoke machine played the background music and he walked around singing and dancing with a different woman every song. Thankfully, my girlfriend never made eye contact, or I might have lost her to Don Juan. So, it was a piano bar without much piano playing. It was also very very loud, but, I am not taking anything off for that - again, it's a piano bar, and a fairly small one at that, it's going to be loud. Second, the clientele. Look, they had been drinking a lot and were enjoying the music. That's fine, but at the same time, you should be aware that there is a table trying to have dinner. Again, I know its a dancing piano bar, but do you have to lean on my chair? Stick your butt in my face while you're dancing? Knock into me every 10 seconds? No, you don't. You can have fun without occupying my space or using my chair to prevent you from falling down. Everyone around us was really inconsiderate. I know they were having fun, and I don't begrudge them that, but they can have fun a foot or so away from me. Next, the food. I ordered something I never had before - black linguine. It came with a spicy tomato sauce and shrimp and arugula. I really wanted a tomato sauce, but all of the entrees I saw that I liked had cream sauces. So, I went with something new. It was good - very good actually. Small portion, but a slight kick and good. Problem is it made me sick. I was nauseous with stomach cramps the next morning (not how you want to run a half marathon). I don't necessarily think something was wrong with the food - maybe it just disagreed with me - but how can I give a restaurant a good rating when it made me ill? The other thing I'll say is that I think management was stupid with our seating. I understand - you have an open table and guests, you seat them there. But the jostling and rudeness could very well have simply been because you squeezed a table between a crowded bar, a crowded dance floor, and a piano. I think I would have enjoyed myself much more if I didn't feel like I was going to get trampled. Sorry folks, but not a fan. read more

We went on a Saturday night and had an absolute blast here. There is entertainment (weekends only, not sure) but it's kind of irreverent and free flowing with a talented singer/performer that also plays the piano. A regular customer also plays the piano well and freed up the "pro" to moved around the room and to the outside patio. This is not a sit and watch the show and applaud. It's like a happening with some customers joining in song, clapping and dancing when the feeling moves you. The bartender hits the tambourine and gets the hanging bar lights to swing to the rhythm. Later in the evening they set off some fireworks in front of the building. We'll get to the food in a second but this place is for the 35 to 60's year old crowd and made for fun! Also, all of the above takes place while you're still eating and drinking and that makes it all the better. Our waiter and the service in general were excellent and one server will pick up the slack for another so you're always well handled. We had a couple of Caesar salads and Spring salads. I'm finding all Caesar salads in restaurants are just average. Haven't had a good one since it was made table side. Nonetheless, our table had for entrees; Mussels, Osso Bucco (very tender), and Linguine alla Carbonara. All were really good, served hot and prepared in a classic Italian style. The food is good (and relatively reasonably priced) with excellent service and deserves 4 stars. The vibe, music and fun earns a strong 5 stars.
