"Did we pass it?" The anxious question came from my wife as I struggled to both locate Cafe Dimona and drive. It wasn't easy. Washington Street, running perpendicular to Fredericksburg's main drag is high speed. I glanced at my map. "Yup," I replied, executing a high speed u-turn that had my wife screaming in terror as a pickup barreled down toward us. I pulled back into traffic smoothly and this time spotted the small sign leading to what looked like a small, Texas, family dwelling. "Here it is." Off of Main Street and not catering to the beer and bratwurst crowd, or the high society wine snobs, Cafe Dimona feels like stepping into the Eastern Med. We were greeted and seated immediately, then presented with a sample flight of their four signature sauces along with an amazing pita. My less refined palette didn't quite appreciate the lemon kavush, which was preserved lemon with salt, mint, and other spices. It was tangy, but sour, without any sweetness, so definitely an acquired taste. My wife also dug into the Shug and Matbuha, both of which were so spicy that only my wife's native Texan taste buds were able to withstand the bonfires! We ordered hummus and pita as an appetizer and were served one of the freshest, tastiest, delicious hummus I've ever had. My wife and I dug in gleefully as her Shakshuka and my Lamb Kebob were being prepared. Lunch arrived and my wife grinned as she continued to light fires on her tongue that even the Greek Yogurt couldn't truly quench. Still she clearly loved her dish. Mine was... well... I can't say that I enjoyed it. I'm a gyro guy, or shwarma, and I felt the lamb was seriously under seasoned. Even combined with the cucumber and beet salad and wrapped in pita, it needed help. Feta. or tsatiki sauce? I'm sure it was authentic, but I was not the right audience. Still, my wife loved the food and she is more worldly than I. Café Dimona was such a gem! I've been to Fredericksburg a couple of times and had never heard of this place and will definitely want to come back for dinner on my next visit. My friend and I came in on a Sunday during lunchtime and shared the Hummus Plate and a Salad. The Hummus dish was an interesting one for me, I loved it, especially with the beef and lamb, but I don't know if I would have it as an entree but instead as an appetizer. The salad was pretty straight forward as well, refreshing and light! Those two plates were plenty for the both of us along with the generous amount of pita bread we had for the sauces/dip/spreads at the beginning and for the hummus. Left me wanting more! That pita bread though, 10/10 The space is cute and bright, the service was great - felt a bit rushed, I think because they needed to close early, but not a big deal. Reason why I would give this spot a 4 is because I wish they had more lunch entree options. The other options seemed like they were more fitting for an evening dinner. That's just me! What a lovely surprise to find top-quality Mediterranean food in Fredericksburg, Texas! We were looking for a lunch spot that wasn't on Main Street during spring break, and this small Cafe on Washington Street was the perfect fit. The service was excellent: the sauces were explained, the menu questions were answered, and the staff were very nice and appropriately attentive. The food was incredible! The Israeli salad is wonderfully fresh and crunchy, and the pita is divine. I had shakshouka, and it was wonderful and spicy. Mom had falafel, and she loved it. And the sauces - I have a new appreciation for really good tahini. The preserved lemon sauce was another favorite. The atmosphere is very calming, making the meal even more enjoyable. To celebrate my wife's birthday, we went to a little gem of a restaurant in Fredericksburg. The place is an old house that was converted to an intimate dining place. The food was amazingly delicious. The hummus and the pita bread with a salad would have been a satisfying lunch or dinner item. We both ordered from their limited menu of meat and fish proteins, and their vegan selection. I ordered the Moroccan fish while my partner ordered the cabbage and cauliflower steak dinner. It's a vegan dish that was surprisingly tasty and very filling. My wife ate every bite! My fish was cooked perfectly although the sauce was a little bit spicy for me. I kept reaching for the little cucumber salad that neutralized the spiciness of the sauce. The pita bread, as my partner described, had the consistency of a very tasty pancake. Partnered with the hummus, it was a tasty and delicious combination. As for the service, our server was very attentive and helpful. She helped navigate the menu, especially the special sauces that they bring with the first batch of pita bread. Once you taste the bread, you will order another one from the menu. Overall, this restaurant is a must go place. It was a 30 minute drive for us but for the food quality and taste, we will come back and try the kabob and the braised short ribs. Our meal started with slices of thick pita bread and a sampling of their housemade sauces (if you find one you like, you can order more for $4 each). I ordered Hummus the Works for $20 - it was basically hummus topped with bits of ground beef, lamb and grilled onions. My companion got the falafel for $19. Both plates came with a small and savory Israeli salad. Hummus was just like it sounded, served with two rounds of the thick bread. The falafel was denser and less crispy than some others I've tried. My first time at this cozy place and I was impressed. We came for an early lunch and the food was excellent. They started us out with fresh pita with a small sampler plate with Lemon Kavush, Tahini, Matbuha, and Shug (on the house). All were excellent. We ordered "Hummus the Works" which included caramelized onions, parsley, Grilled Beef and Lamb. The flavor of the hummus and the beef were great. Highly recommended with the fresh pita bread. I think I licked the plate clean with the remaining pita bread. I also ordered the Baba Ghanoush and it tasted like the eggplant was smoked on a grille, an extra touch. We also ordered the "Wine Short Rib Cigars" and that was a table favorite as well. My son ordered the kids Pita Bread Pizza and he seemed to eat the entire thing including the crust. First, you should ALWAYS treat your customers with respect because you NEVER KNOW who is dining with your business. I had a food critic in town and owner of a very successful middle eastern restaurant in town. I was embarrassed, appalled, and ashamed at this establishment. It was not only embarrassing for the business but the entire service industry. The staff representatives should be FIRED. I know the owner is the son in law of a local store in town. I can't imagine that he would allow anyone to treat his customers with such disrespect. When a customer asks you how you make or prepare something, DON'T LIE. A chef who has worked and trained in the finest restaurants will know if you're being honest. When caught with your pants down, you don't defend yourself by attacking them and telling them you have been reviewed by executive chefs and magazines. YOU HAVE NOT. If so, they obviously were not anyone known in the industry. I hoped that things had improved but obviously they haven't. You may fool locals with limited experience in the middle east or middle eastern restaurant venue but you definitely didn't fool either chef in my party. read more
