Made reservations to experience the gospel brunch featuring Johnny Nicholas and Linda Gail Lewis--what a treat. It was such a fun and uplifting way to spend the day. The restaurant is located right off Hwy 87, and while it's easy to spot, there is currently some roadwork that may cause slight delays getting there. This charming Hill Country spot has great decor and character, with posters and touches that add to its small-town appeal. I always enjoy places like this for the charm, hospitality, and comforting food. We were greeted warmly and seated right away. Our server, Randy, truly did it all--host, server, and chef. We ordered a mimosa, a spicy Bloody Mary, fried oysters, and the chicken fried steak. I'm always on the hunt for a great CFS, and this one definitely delivered. Everything was delicious. We were having a family gathering and were happy to have the alternate dining room. There was a musician performing and we would not be able to hear our group, glad they could accomodate us. The place was busy and we had a waitstaff who was working both dining rooms. We got left behind. We were first in the room and the last to get our food and leave. 3 other tables came and went while we were there, perhaps the foh staff could have alerted the waiter in the room of our presence. I really wanted the marinated tenderloin but it wasn't on the menu. Their twist on food was okay but the meatloaf had bbq sauce (not expecting that). My daughter was disappointed by the Chicken fried steak, she wanted the traditional white gravy. Other food was okay, the prices were what you would expect for a touristy area. $$ to $$$. I had been to this place in a past life 35 years ago, we come through Fredricksburg in the summer and I had seen this place. Now that I've seen it I'm good. After a recommendation we were eager to try this restaurant while visiting Fredericksburg. The ambiance was charming and the restaurant smelled great as we walked in. Apparently they were roasting garlic!! I had chicken fried steak and my husband had the fried seafood platter. Both were delicious and the service was good. We came here 15 years ago when we got married.... We came back for old times sake. Unfortunately they were out of the raspberry pie... next time we will call ahead to order one in advance! When we complained, the other staff were extremely rude. There were 3 other tables also waiting to pay. The food is always amazing! The shrimp was huge and cooked perfectly ( if you know, you know). The sides were a veg medley of quash and carrots, and the other side was seasoned roasted potatoes. Just remember they close at 2. Also, this is a place where you come and enjoy a drink, a long afternoon chat, and amazing food.... The waiter was amazing, as well as the owner feeding us even though they had closed for the day. I love the decor and have been here many times. I highly recommend it. read more

I almost don't want to leave a stellar review...We want to keep this place to ourselves! We eat there monthly. Food is ALWAYS amazing. Everything is so fresh and delicious. I've been to the hilltop Café twice in the past couple of months. Sunday brunch was amazing and the music was great. They always offer off menu specials and the vegetables are grown in their own garden. On my last visit, I had the fried okra. It was cornmeal crusted, just like mom makes. Very eclectic. An old place .. looks run down from the outside walk in and it's another world. The old time feel. A big comfortable thrown together..like grandmas kitchen meets granddads man cave type of vibe. Kinda pricy .. very fresh though.. did the daily special and found the perfect tarter sauce. We saw this listed on a "Things To Do In Fredericksburg" list. We enjoy live music and thought, "Why not??" We got a rez for 12:30 and arrived about 12:25. Our table was ready when we got there. After we were seated, our server told us all of the things that they were out of....CFS, gravy, oysters boudin and gumbo.That seemed odd; didn't they know they were serving brunch on Sunday?? Oh well. We started with fried oysters and Bloody Marys. Excellent oysters; corn meal breaded. Their Bloody Mary was bland. No zip. Too much tomato juice and celery salt. Two words for you - Zing Zang. Our entrees were all very good....fried shrimp, chicken fried chicken and fried catfish. The mashed potatoes were excellent, as was the tomato / okra stew side. Overall, the food was good. Three things that weren't good: 1.) Not enough servers, which seems to be a chronic problem all over. We rarely saw our waitress. We got all of our needs met by the middle school bus boy. (For what it's worth, we gave him a much better tip than our server.) 2.) How could you run out of so many items? This brunch is a big deal for you, right? Sheesh. 3.) We saw no signage anywhere that informed us of the $10 per person cover charge for the band. Only learned about this when we got the bill. Re: the band. They weren't bad, but there was little if any "gospel" music. There were far more Beatles covers than gospel music. This hole in the wall was worth stopping in. The menu offered a variety of things and the food was very good. Kayla told us a lot about the colorful history of the business and a lot of cool talents play here. I enjoyed looking at super cool vintage signs and pictures. I feel like they could have been more accommodating as several staples found in most restaurants and bars were not offered in this one. For a roadside cafe, this place is priced like it's a big city restaurant. Were it not pandemic times, enjoying the food indoors in the quirky old gas station may have made for a better experience. But getting take away just emphasized how small the portions were compared to the high price. The crab cake benedict was really small and the hollandaise did not taste good. Hashbrowns were overcooked. Also: not a single person in the establishment was wearing a mask. Not the cooks, not the servers, not anyone at tables. Fredricksburg has a mask mandate but maybe this place was right outside the county limits that they could get away with that. Either way they didn't care. read more

This cafe specialized in seafood. Upon entering, you would think it was southern cooking joint. It's filled with antiques, the building itself looks as if it is a historic landmark. They have approx two staff and a live band that plays traditional gospel music. I would highly recommend this place to anyone. Their seafood dishes carry the spices from Louisiana so if you are from there, you will feel right at home. read more

One of those holes in the wall you don't want to miss. We came across this place only because it was shared by the Fredericksburg Instagram page, otherwise we'd never heard of it. I'm so glad we decided to check it out. After reading the story of the owners (Nicholas & Brenda) we felt compelled to try the cuisine. Part Greek/part Cajun is about as intriguing as the decor. Ordered the crab cake appetizer which I prefer a little more dry (personally) but it was good. Kids got the chicken tenders & fries - the fries were homemade and coated in thin layer of flour then fried to perfection, tenders were delicious as well (would totally order as an adult too) Jumbo stuffed shrimp - amazing, flavors are delicious. The fresh veggies & white rice even had the slightest hint of herbal flavoring (different than normal spices that I could name) but literal deliciousness. My chopped steak was one of the best I've eaten, super flavorful and filling! Potatoes were also great. Greek okra was different than expected but I'd order again. Don't go in for a quick meal, there's one cook, on assistant cook, and one waitress (on a Tuesday evening) - so it's not quick but it's worth jt and the cook (owner) makes all recipes in memory of his late wife and the dishes are still named after her! It's a beautiful story and happy to experience it firsthand. Drinks weren't anything to pine over but that's not why we went! Get on our and enjoy something out of the norm! read more

The daily specials board had some very interesting and eclectic items though many were not available. The Fried Calamari was tough, the breading fell off and was mostly onion with four tough pieces of calamari and three fried jalapeño slices. Definitely not worth the $12. Since they were out of gumbo and two types of boudin we got a shrimp po' boy for $16 that had three shrimp, though the bread was great and appropriately sized to the three shrimp. The fries at a $4 add-on were disappointing because they say "fresh cut" which is nice to see, but then they egg wash them so they are like Burger King fries, only fresh cut. They had NO taste and were the worst fries I've ever eaten. Ate four, hoping they'd get better and they didn't so left the rest. Had water to drink. $36 total tab. Won't be back. read more

Ambiance outshines the food. Of course that ambiance is a special mix of scientifically illiterate berating of Biden by the owner in between playing the harmonica. Usually so quick to condemn a liberal actor who states something political, they were more than happy to while remaining completely oblivious to their hypocrisy. I thought musicians were supposed to keep their mouth shut and play music. I'm also all for the child labor employed here but if I have to hear about the 15 year old girls "rough day" which prevents her apparently from knowing if the cup of soup in her hand is gumbo or white bean soup..... I'd like to eye-roll more than her but it isn't possible. The food is passable to good... personal preference but it's a bit too strong crust on the fried shrimp and catfish. read more

Food was good but way overpriced! When we called to make a reservation, we were convinced to sit in the room where the live band would be performing. We said ok, but wouldn't have if we had been told it would add an additional $30 to our bill! With tip, our cost for dinner ended up being over $160! Will not be back! read more
