This is a review for the private venue, and the excellent staff at Cafe Escadrille. My wedding was held at CE 2 weeks ago, and if I do say so myself, it was the best wedding ever. From the very beginning, the staff at Cafe Escadrille was nothing less than fabulous. Mario, the venue manager, made us feeling like family, and took care of our each and every wedding need. The venue itself is beautiful. From the garden room, the living room, and the ballroom, everything was perfect. Additionally, the small touches that the staff took to ensure our comfort and enjoyment was extremely appreciated (cheese and cracker platter and champagne in the bridal suite? yes please! A bride's gotta eat!). The wait staff was extremely professional and friendly. In particular, Lucille was at our beck and call all day and night, and even ensured we ate our dinner and kept our champagne flutes full. Obviously the food was delicious. Guests have commented that it was the best wedding food they have ever had! Then there was the cake...gorgeous AND tasty! Overall, I would recommend this venue to anyone who asked. I am only giving this 1 star only because I have too. I am not writing about the food or the service that was delivered when the food was delivered I am writing about what happen when we paid by our credit card. I treated my husband to an anniversary dinner here the bill came to $100.51, I paid the tip by cash. When the statement came in from the credit card company it stated $120.51. When I called the restaurant up to alert them they told me no such thing happens here.. Over Easter dinner having conversation with everyone and I told my story and then my mother pipes up and states to me..Hey you know what come to think about it I purchase a gift certificate as well for $100.00 and when the statement came it in was for $120.00 but the gift certificate stated $100.00. So, as I do own a business what is happening here is after you purchase/pay they manually go back in and do a tip adjust.. So that is why it is so important to put the words cash given or put 0.00 in the tip section of the receipt for the merchant copy. Now, I know you all who are reading this is going, well why didnt you or your mom go back to prove it..Well my mom tossed out the receipt and so didnt I. You could aruge blue in the face with them but if you dont have the proof you dont have a leg to stand on. When i go out to eat at a restaurant and pay decent prices...i expect great food...i was not impressed with this place at all...Service was excellent but food was not up to par. I got the chicken saltimbocca and it was very bland. I dont know if i am just comparing it to another restaurant's chicken saltimbocca, but this was a couple bucks more. Our waitress was Melissa, she was very nice and quick with drinks and kept an eye on us. Portions are rather small. Garden salad was good. This was my second visit. What a totally DISAPPOINTING Mother's Day experience yesterday at Cafe Escadrille. We had reservations for their "Grand Buffet" in the banquet room. The room looked very plain - like they just threw in tables & chairs. The food selections (or should I say lack thereof) were HORRIBLE I wouldn't even call it a buffet. Whomever put together the "menu" should be fired. This is their "Grand Buffet" Main Table Green Beans Baby Carrots (not the nice gourmet ones the crappy little stubby ones you buy in a plastic bag in the grocery store) Rice Pilaf Potatoes mess that was unidentifiable Ravioli with red sauce (looked store bought not homemade & look pretty gross) Salmon Stuffed Shrimp Carved Turkey & Ham Carved Prime Rib (see below - the quality of the beef was HORRIBLE the worst I have ever had anywhere) Salad Table Not not pasta salads, fruit salad different vegetable salads. Make your our garden salad Casear Salad (which was good) Dessert Table The best part of the buffet because of the selection & nice presentation. Lots of cakes, pies, cupcakes, fuit, chocolate waterfall, eclairs, cookies everything that you would expect On top of that, the food QUALITY was substandard - period! The "prime rib" was anything but. Not only wasn't it prime or angus - it couldn't have even been choice (common grade in supermarkets). This at best was "Select" but if I had to guess it was "Standard" grade. They didn't even have steak knives, not that that would have made a difference because what you really needed was a chain saw! All this for a mere $44.95 plus tax & tip (which they take the liberty to add 18% right into the bill and we were a party of 3). What a rip off - at best the buffet was worth $14.95 (yes it was that bad!) Maybe I should have know something was up when they didn't post their menu on their website - I would have been embarrassed too. Clearly a business that is circling the bowl and is just trying to maximize their profits before the go away! One thing they are short of is NERVE for delivering a poor and charging top (unreasonable) price. I have had better meals in my school cafeteria. I cannot comprehend all of these negative reviews! Cafe Escadrille is superior! I've tried at least half of the menu, as I am a seasoned patron, and have never been disappointed. The service is always excellent, and the food is always great. It's on the pricier side, but for obvious reasons. The filets are always cooked to perfection, and their crab cakes are supreme. I am always satisfied with my dining experience and don't have anything negative to say. The only turn off I can think of is that you could be there for a while. But in my experience, I believe that's mainly due to the fact that my family (whom I usually dine there with on special occasions) orders multiple apps, salads, meals, drinks, the works! If you're looking for a less expensive Capital Grille type-of-place, this is it! read more

My husband and I ate there last night and don't know what all the fuss is about. I have been there several times before over the years and was never impressed. We only went back because it is local to where we live and we had a gift certificate that was given to us. The hostess seated us by one of the windows and mentioned that we would have a nice view of their fountain. She didn't point out that we also had a view of busy route 3A and the businesses across the street. I asked to move to another section which turned out to be not much better. It was up and behind the bar. It was so quiet in the restaurant that we had to listen to all of the foolish chatter from the bar and we were the only people sitting there so it seemed a little weird. It didn't get much better when we were brought a salad which came with our entrees. It had 1 small cocktail size tomato, some not to great iceberg lettuce, a couple of chopped pieces of a cucumber and 2 very thing slices of red onion. The salad dressing was drenched over the lettuce making it unappealing. I had a much better salad for lunch from Market Basket (a local supermarket) which had olives, cheese, ham etc. and only cost $2.99 cents. I ordered Baked Stuffed Shrimp which had nothing else on the plate except a lonely slice of lemon. It was ok, but not worth the price of $20.00 + they gave me a second smaller dish with a sweet potato on it. My husband ordered Clam Chowder which he said was good, and Shrimp Scampi. The Scampi looked ok, but we have (I tasted it) had much better for far less money. So I wouldn't waste my time going there again, and hope that I don't get any more gift certificates to go there. read more

Asked weeks in advance for an allergy free meal (plain baked scrod, veggies, potato) but asked that they use oil, lemon, herbs for flavor) Fish was dry, overcooked and flavorless. Veggies were passable. A restaurant of this caliber should be able to make fish have flavor. Had to request olive oil because it was so dry. Still couldn't eat it. Would not return. read more

I've been hearing about this place for as long as I can remember (that would be maybe 20-25 years) and I finally had lunch here. I was disappointed. It looks like the kind of place where people would continuously kiss your ass but service was very laid back. The parking lot wasn't full of Hummers, but it was full of Buicks and Toyota Avalons. Inside there were a lot of old (65+) ladies having tea, 40-ish women complaining to each other about their marriage counselors, etc. Hardly a man in the place. It was not the atmosphere I was expecting but maybe it's different after the offices close. The food was good and filling but nothing amazing. I read here that the place was renovated only a few years ago, but it looked tired. The stain on the woodwork was peeling and some of the ceiling looked rusty somehow. It took me over 20 years to get here and it will probably be 20 years before I come back. Not that the food was bad, but I think that the next time I'm in Burlington, I'll see what happened to the Dandelion Green. read more

Being an out-of-towner, I wasn't sure what to expect from Cafe Escadrille. The place is huge! The service was spectacular, the food choices were aplenty and might I mention delicious. Everyone in my party was satisfied with his or her choice and enjoyed sampling off of each other's plates. SPECIAL NOTES: We were looking for a place that had a private room and Cafe Escadrille had one open (short notice) that had a $1,500 minimum spend for the group. While only having 10 people in our group, we decided to go for it anyway. (Lots of dirty vodka martinis for all!) At the end of the dinner, despite ordering appetizers, drinks, main courses and desserts, we still had not made the $1,500 minimum. We were expecting the waitress to hand over the bill and charge us the difference. Instead, the staff went out of their way to find ways around the minimum spend limit, and ended up giving us the difference in gift cards. Now that's customer service! read more

I was really looking forward to a decent caeser salad. What arrived was a plate of lettuce that wasn't very crispy and salad dressing that was not well tossed, so some bites had dressing, while other mouthfuls had just a hint of dressing. I ordered the calamari, which was also inconsistent. Some pieces were very rubbery and chewy, and other pieces were not. I was tempted to spit out one piece because it tasted off, but that wouldn't have been polite! I didn't detect any garlic lemon flavor that was listed on the menu. It came with a marinara type sauce which was very soupy. The place wasn't overly crowded, but there was a huge lag between the salad and the main meal. Won't be back. read more

I'm not a "local" of Burlington but I know that the Escadrille is a neighborhood gem but sadly I wasn't too impressed. It was Mother's Day and good thing I booked my table 2 weeks in advance because they were booked solid and it showed. Sadly the service was only so-so. It took 20 min to order our food, we sat with empty glasses most of the time and our food came out 40 minutes after placing our order. Now I know it was Mother's Day and they were slammed but let me say this, a table with the same amount of people that were seated AFTER us had eaten their ENTIRE meal and had a to-go bag packed by the time we got our food. It was a little ridiculous. We were also under amused by the food, go to Capital Grill. Same prices, better service and better food. read more

Had lunch here with my wife & another couple yesterday. Service was very good even though our wait person was somewhat overwhelmed carrying 8 tables at once with more guests arriving as we were finishing up. I had the omakase sushi lunch special which was excellent, great presentation, nice variety of sashimi and sushi. My wife had the seared ahi tuna which was good but not exceptional. The cream puff desert was just junk. Cheap overly sweet ice cream between two hamburger buns. However, the calamari appetizer was quite good. This review is for the Gourmet Room. My husband and I took my parents here for their 40th wedding anniversary on Saturday evening. We had a shaky start at reception, but the rest of the night was utterly fantastic. I had called a week in advance to make a reservation, and was promptly told that they do not take reservations for the Gourmet Room on Saturday. Yet when we arrived, the hostess asked if we had reservations. Slightly taken aback, I said we were told we couldn't make one. Come to find, you can make reservations for the Cafe Room, and then state you prefer to sit in the Gourmet Room (weird underground practice, but ok, good to know?). And the hostess on the phone did not tell me that, so that was kind of lame. I also want to note that the people in front of us and the three groups that came in after us all went through the exact same conversation with the hostess, and seemed equally bemused. Fortunately, we were seated about 20 minutes later, and everything was perfect after that. Every single thing we had was delicious! We started off with two hot appetizers: Oysters Rockefeller and Escargot Bourguignonne. It was my first time trying Oysters Rockefeller - really liked them a lot. The escargot was fresh and tender, and I was eagerly dipping my garlic bread in the delicious burgundy wine sauce. Next, my husband and my mom shared the Caesar Salad for Two, prepared table-side (of course, my dad and I each got a taste). Everyone commented that it was the best Caesar Salad they had ever had. For the entrees, we all ordered the Chateaubriand because, why not? It's the house special! Plated table-side, this was truly the star of the evening. We specified medium-rare on both orders, though one order came out more on the rare side. I didn't mind that - as far as I'm concerned, redder is better. The beef sang of tenderness, practically melting like butter in your mouth. The variety of vegetables - potato, green beans, carrots, mushroom, artichoke, tomato and squash, and cauliflower - along with the thick and creamy Béarnaise sauce, was the perfect compliment to the meat. We were sufficiently wowed. To top of the evening, we ordered a Baked Alaska for the table along with some coffees and cappuccinos. Our waiter, Andy, kindly informed us that even though the menu states "Baked Alaska for Two", there is enough for four or even six people. He was absolutely right - after the big meal we had just consumed, one order was enough. This was another item prepared table-side (we really went all out with the table-side dishes!) and, while fun to watch the flaming dessert, was a fairly straight-forward neapolitan ice cream and meringue. Andy and the supporting waitstaff were fantastic - the service was impeccable, attentive, table cleaned and reset between courses, and drinks were kept filled. There was no rush to the evening; in fact, we were there for nearly three hours! But that was exactly what we were looking for, and it was a wonderful evening because of it. So this place has been open a really long time and a lot of times the longer a restaurant stays open, the longer it seems to suit an older and older crowd. That sure was the feeling I got when I went a few weeks ago. That being said the food was pretty darn good. I thought the menu selections were really dated though. Not that they need to have the latest fusion dishes but really, surf n turf? Again, that being said the food still tasted great. So why am I giving 4 stars? The service. The waitstaff was just impeccable. We had a designated server but everyone seemed to help out. That's how a restaurant should be run. She genuinely appeared to appreciate her job and know that her actions (along with the food quality) would effect her income, you know? I took my girlfriend to the gourmet room for dinner and had a fantastic time. The food was expensive, but well worth the money! The service is excellent and very friendly; multiple times they would notice that we were confused about the food, they would take the time to fully explain what it was. I consider this over rated and resting on its laurels from years past. Some of the food was good, most was fine and some disappointing. The problem really is quality vs. value. If prices were in the Not Your Average Joes range there would be much less complaining. Hard to stomach $25+ an entree for over worked/ harried staff and long lulls in timing and service. In the height of tomato season the caprese salad has institutional tomatoes?? No excuse for that what so ever! The disconnect between menu description and reality is too great. We had an excellent experience at the Cafe Escadrille! Brenda, our waitress was very pleasant and actually engaged us in meaningful conversation. All three dinners were outstanding, the baked scrod was cooked perfectly, the stuffed shrimp was tender and moist and I had the scallops and they were perfectly prepared! 5 Stars!! I'll start with the very first impression I had as soon as we walked in the door - stuffy! My husband and I were dressed in business casual attire (black slacks and a nice blouse for me, black slacks and a nice sweater for him) and both the staff and clientele seemed to be looking at us with almost a shameful frown that said, "You're not dressed nice enough to even polish our shoes." Our server seated us by throwing down the most enormous set of menus that literally took up 3/4 of the table space before we'd even reached the table and walked away (most nicer establishments like this might pull out your chair for you, or at least wait until you're seated to hand you a menu, so that bothered me but I sucked it up and tried to make the most of it). My husband noticed another couple about our age (late 20s), whom our same server actually took the time to hand the menus to, so I'm not sure what the disconnect was. When I looked around, I noticed the dominant crowd was a bunch of stuffy 50-somethings, so we felt a bit out of place. I'm sure the other couple our age did, too, since they ate and left very quickly. The service was awful. My husband ordered a honeydew iced tea, the woman came back with a bottle of orange iced tea, said, "This is all we have" and served it to him without asking whether he would prefer something else instead. We asked if we could put in our order for 2 appetizers, she said, "I'll be right back - I'm getting buzzed to deliver the food to this other table, and so I need to run back there before the chef starts throwing stuff." Wow. She came back about 5 minutes later and we dropped down to just one appetizer instead because I didn't feel like spending any extra $$ at a place that was treating us like garbage. We went for the cheese sampler - which, paired with my merlot, was the highlight of our meal. For entrees, I ordered the salmon in dill cream sauce - it reminded me of hotel food I would expect at a Marriott or the like (bland, boring, sauce tasted like something ordered from Sodexho or the like). My husband had the seafood fettuccinni and he said it was fine, nothing special. Halfway through our meal, we had a different server, so the other woman must have been cranky because she was getting ready to leave and we walked in? Not sure, but her replacement server was much nicer. I was craving dessert so I ordered the puff pastry filled with cappuccinno ice cream and a decaf coffee to go with it - the ice cream was nice but the puff pastry was dry and unpleasant. And the coffee was borderline cold. My husband had the creme' brulee, which he said was fine but again, nothing spectacular. The noise levels were quite loud (we were seated in the extending Garden House area with cement flooring) and the heater right next to our table was cranked up HIGH in anticipation of the "Nor'Easter that never was," so my legs were toasty warm throughout the evening. My husband and I both said it would be highly unlikely if we were to return, given the service and stuffiness of the place. Funny that someone called this place a "cougar den" - so true! Sean was our server tonight and he, along with the food was absolutely phenomenal. This was the first time my boyfriend and I have gone here and will not be the last. We were seated and Sean immediately greeted us and was very friendly. He was also extremely knowledgeable about the specials and menu and when we had a question about the menu he was unsure of, he went to check for us. He immediately asked if we had any allergies before we ordered which we've never came across and was appreciative of that considering my boyfriend does have an allergy to certain food. Our food was to die for. The steak was cooked to perfection and our seafood tasted as if we ordered it from a restaurant right along the beach! Sean came back every so often to check up on us / refill our waters with ease even though he had many tables he wasnt overwhelmed and never rushed us. We couldn't have asked for a better night. This past weekend, I hosted a 60 yr old birthday party @ Café Escadrille. I was referred to Café Escadrille by a close friend who had also either hosted or attended a shower at the restaurant. I was so pleased with everything! from start to finish, was very happy. *Working with the sales manager was very smooth and it was great communication. *I found the place to be beautifully decorated- (beautiful Christmas tree, fireplace), just all around very grand and inviting. *the buffet food was good. the bartender was friendly and attentive. I would absolutely host another event here. I couldn't have asked for a better place to celebrate my dad's 60th birthday. Thank you Café Escadrille for putting out a fabulous job! I went here on a Saturday for lunch recently and due to graduations, communions, etc. it was packed. While the service was not slow, it was not friendly or overly helpful. I had a swordfish kabob, which I enjoyed. I had a lox appetizer which was nicely done with rye crisps, capers, and chevre. My family enjoyed their meals, also. My fiancé and I went to this restaurant for date night. We had a bottle of 2007 King Estates Oregon Pinor Noir and it was great. They have a variety of selections for wines. The raw oysters and clams were amazingly fresh. I had the perfect pairs (2 baked Stuff Shrimps and a Petit Filet Mignon) and my fiancé had the Fresh Sea Scallops. I've been to the Escadrille a few times and it's pretty predictable: the older singles or the family groups. Sometimes they have a band and other times they don't. We went last night because it was local enough. I never Yelped them before but here I am because I had to let them know that last night at around 7pm was not busy enough to justify waitstaff or hosts not coming by to acknowledge us at our table on the side of the bar. After having been seated for over 20 minutes, I said something and my friend had to call over a server to ask if there were any waiters available. I mean, really? Were you all so incredibly busy that he had to do that? If so, train your hosts to offer menus to parties that seat themselves and schedule more staff. On the upside: once we finally got service, the ladies were very attentive and genuinely nice. The food was OK. Just OK. Nothing I'd call date or special-occasion fare. I asked for my Tuna Sashimi seared rare and it was very fresh and tasty. The wine was good but too expensive for such an average and just-OK place. Great location and ample free parking. Good thing for the locals because the Escadrille's average-ness would never survive in the city. read more

Escadrille continues to be for a much older crowd. It is i also very expensive for what you get. We went back only because we received in the mail a $25 off coupon. I think they are trying to attract more business with this mailer, and they also now have a sushi bar which is an odd thing to add for this type of restaurant. Granted we were there on a weekday night around 8pm, but other than the bar, the place was pretty quiet. I think if they are hard up for money they should consider being open on Sundays. they would make a lot on brunch and/or sunday dinner. i have a feeling the banquet facility is what is keeping this place going. I ordered the Cod special which was to be topped with Jonah crab meat. it literally had two tiny bites of crab on top. When the bartender asked me how it was, i told him how there was no crab on it. He did go get me more crab meat, but it was shocking that this entree was $32.95 and cheap on the crab meat. Also the plate came out extremely hot which is often a sign of the food being microwaved. They are still cheap with only offering a salad and one side. And then if you want a caesar, its a $2 up charge. Drinks reasonably priced and strong. But i could have had an equal or better fish entree at Legal Seafoods for the same or less money and with two sides, in a much more contemporary atmosphere. We don't expect to dine there again unless we get another coupon. read more

Bizarre but it totally works! Working late...where to go after 10pm? Walk in, live music (2 piece, great guitar and folky)...fun. Older. Looks a bit like a traditional steakhouse. Then I find out only a lighter menu after 10 or a sushi menu. Sushi menu? Hesitantly order sushi and to my surprise it good. Really good. So what goes good with sushi? Baked French onion soup of course! Surprisingly good as well. So while not a true 5 star experience, I'm coming back. Maybe I'll try the after work thing tomorrow here? Came here with my mom on March 13th for lunch. We have never been but the menu looked unbelievably good. Very crowded for a Wednesday but luckily we had reservations for 1pm. It was restaurant week so that could of been why.Our server was Carlos who was absolutely wonderful. Very helpful and friendly. He also knew what went into my moms dirty martini. Which tells you a lot if our sever can tell you right on the spot how it's made. I had the peach belini which was one of the best ones I've ever had. For our meal we shared appetizers and one entree. The appetizers we had were lamb lollipops, bacon wrapped scallops, and spinach oysters. Everything was delicious. The scallops were HUGE!! Our entree we split was the lobster stew. Just lobster in a yummy sauce but was perfect. Reminded us of a newburg sauce. It was served in two bowls instead of one which was very thoughtful and nice. The white wine Pinot Grigio mom had was one the the best she's had. Tried finding it at local liquor store but no luck. We shared bread pudding which was vanilla cherry flavored. Bread pudding is a weakness of ours so we had to have it. Will definitely be coming back. Our waiter knew everything and gave us lots of feedback of the choices we chose. Our reserveration was made at 8 45, and we weren't seated until 9 15. The hostesses seemed preoccupied with their own conversation, and made us all wait near the coat check. Dinner was tasty, but we were rushed. My salad was taken without me finishing it or excusing them to take it. I was engaged in conversation and it was taken without me noticing. Our meals were served when some of the guests were still picking on the cheese plates and other appetizers. I would've expected more courteousness for guests paying 500$ (or more) for a surprise dinner event. I would like to add, the singer was a nice touch for a saturday night. read more

Last night my friend and I were driving around Burlington and Googling reviews for a local place to eat. We ended up at Cafe Escadrille, which was a colossal mistake. Based on the absurdly high prices and flowing script on the menu, the restaurant considers itself to be very fancy. But the food, decor, atmosphere and service were subpar. I had a Caesar salad that could've come from an airplane catering service. My bluefin tuna was drenched in a cheap sauce - but even that couldn't mask the poor quality of the fish. Frankly, everything tasted like it had been frozen, then cooked in a microwave. On top of that, the service was surprisingly brusque and unprofessional. Absolutely nothing about the restaurant justified the menu prices - not that I would return if the food were free. Our per person cost was under $60 only because we skipped appetizers, dessert, and extra drinks. For what it's worth, we ate in the main cafe room, as opposed to the even fancier dining room. Today my stomach is a little churny, but whether from dinner or the mere memory I cannot yet say. read more

I've had awesome fried clams here and a pretty tasty lobster roll. But this place is SO old fashioned the decor, the menu (in general) and just everything about the place is from another generation of women wearing white gloves to dinner. This is the kind of place my grandparents used to love to go to. If they want to stay in business after their main clientele dies off they will need a major makeover. read more

We had out work christmas party in one of their private party rooms. The decor was great and everything was set up nicely. The food was ok and not what you would expect from a place like this. Fish was nicely cooked but blad with no seasoning or sauce or nothing and chicken parm was literally fried chicken with cheese on it. Absolutely no sauce whatsoever. My family travels up from Bermuda regularly to visit the big medical facility in town. My in-laws are in the 80s and they love to eat dinner here at least once per visit. We typically eat in the "fancier" dining room in the back and only ate once in the front of the house. There was a big difference in the experience - the back is more peaceful, proper, and expensive - the front is a little less expensive, casual, and noisy. I think the food is great, the wait staff are professional and try really hard! I do think you get a wonderful dinner. Make a booking in advance, complimentary valet parking, not sure where you can go wrong! We will be back as usual. read more

The 3 stars are for the ambience of upscale decor,quiet dining room, lunch menu selections and our server Carlos. Unfortunately the lobster in the lobster salad was very tough. My husband said the steak tips were just ok. The kitchen split a profiterole for us so that was a plus. I'll give it another try but definitely not order lobster. read more

Great bar service, excellent food, perfect for a happy hour (which is all I did here goofing out of serious work early. Okay, the crowd is a little too AARP, but who cares if wine, food and service are great ... and I like it if I can lower the average age ... doesn't happen much anymore. read more
