This place was such a pleasant surprise to me. It's nestled amongst the hustle and bustle of Queen Anne ave, where there are already many thriving coffee shops. This one is definitely my favorite in the area. The ambiance is great inside, lots of natural light and fun colors. The coffee itself is fantastic as well. Every latté I've had here has been perfect. I love Cafe Hagen! I live in the area so I walk here all the time for coffee, pastries, and sometimes breakfast. The avocado toast and the waffle with seasonal jam are great. All the pastries I've tried have been good, though I wish they'd warm some of them up. I've tried two if the seasonal coffees that sound like they'd taste weird but I've really liked them both (key lime pie cappucino and pineberry latte). read more

After El Diablo closed shortly after Covid broke out, this has become my favorite cafe-bar, replacing the moribund Storyville. The nice thing is that it has recently expanded its summer hours to be open until 8 or 9 p.m. The inside isn't particularly attractive, the music being much too loud and the space being small, I feel claustrophobic. But the outside sidewalk area is pleasant. One can both work at a table (with rather wobbly benches instead of chairs) and watch the world go by--at least at the corner of Boston and Queen Anne. Highly recommend cafe hagen!! I got an iced matcha latte with lavender added in. This was one of the most delicious matchas I have ever had!! It tasted super fresh and light. Don't get me wrong, the food is good (especially the chai latte and Kouign Amann). But if you want all that and a bag of chips, you might as well take yourself to Venture because they sell the same pastries and the space is a bit more welcoming. Also, have to take a star off because this place is so expensive that you will probably end up spending $35+ if you and your honey order two hot drinks and a pastry. That being said, if you willing to splurge, and don't mind a crowded/cumbersome environment (not the amount of people but the atmosphere and the placement of the queue), this place is pretty good. Atmosphere was incredible, the selection of plants and furniture was great it was like walking into a terraium. Probably because this is Upper QA, as long as you are white, you get delightful service. But as a person of colour, I don't recommend this place. They messed up my order, and made me return to the line to fix it a $2 difference on a $40+ tip bill, only for them to charge me incorrectly again. My neighbor (who is white) has had the staff mess up there a few times, and with her there has been acknowledgement of their error and apologies. The service at the cafe Hagen in Lower QA (5thAve) is way better. Will not be returning. read more

TLDR: Nordic inspired ambiance and fare, with delicious pastries and pretty good kaffe but does not put customer needs first. No computers at all on weekends. I sincerely hope to return given the quality of food and drink but changes need to be made to make this place the best it can be. This place would have 5/5 stars for food and drinks but the service and policies MUST be whipped into shape. Here's the story: I went in on a Sunday for a coffee and breakfast pastries and to meet some family. The place was packed and while they are pretty speedy, I waited in a short line for about 5 minutes. My recommendation would be to add another cashier/POS so things don't get so backed up. I want to pump the Spanakopita, a croissant roll with spinach and feta, along with the Churro Cruftin, a cinnamon sugar croissant roll filled with a mild cream. The fact I like it is notable because normally I HATE filled pastries. Both are awesome and I will certainly order them again in the future (though the spanakopita would be better warmed.) I also ordered the spicy miel latte which is a honey sweetened latte with a bit of a kick that may not be for everyone, but I love spiciness so it rocked for me. So far, everything was great. Unfortunately the quality of the food and drinks cannot compensate for the awkward and frustrating service/management. After sitting with my family and chatting for around 45 minutes or so, I pulled out my computer to help decide where I was going to do my shopping that day as one of the members of my party left. Almost immediately, a female presenting person who I assume to be the store/location manager approached my party where we had pushed two small tables together to eat together and waved a small placard in our faces saying that although permitted Monday-Friday, computers are banned from tables on the weekend. She also inquired about if we were using both tables in a way implying we should only be using 1 table if there were only 2 of us (the 3rd member of our party had walked away only 30 seconds or so prior). At this point my party and I were getting ready to leave and being approached in this way really left a bad taste in my mouth. I sincerely enjoy Cafe Hagen but if this is how they treat their customers, they may not be as successful as they could be. I understand the rationale for not wanting people to linger for a long time without making a purchase and force other customers to turn away, but a no computer policy is not the way to do it. Recommendations: I would recommend asking people not to stay for more than 2 hours without making an additional purchase on weekends or somethings similar, but no computers in Seattle (right near a university no less) is a recipe to alienate paying customers who will simply go across the street to Starbucks. Furthermore, even with such a policy, I would recommend erring on the side of the customer. If they clearly have no food or drink, yes, perhaps ask them to purchase something or leave, but when I was told to put my computer away, I was actively eating and drinking my purchased items and within a totally reasonable time to be at a café ( less than 1 hour) this feels crummy and I did not appreciate it. read more

However the barista made no eye contact, ignored me saying thanks and smiling and looked away despite being well tipped. I suggest Ladro, which has substantially higher quality lattes & pastries. I went in during finals week with the intention of completing some assignments while grabbing a cup of coffee. I went in and ordered a 12 oz Salted Caramel latte and a Nutella croissant. The salted caramel coffee, which was around $5 and some change, did not taste like salted caramel. The croissant was hard and dry-- they did not even warm it up. Aside from the unsatisfactory purchases, the customer service that I received was odd. I sat at the counter by the window and pulled out my laptop only to be met with a side-eye from one of the baristas. She then hurried near me and placed a sign that read that laptops should not be used during the weekends. I was confused by her behavior as a gentleman next to me was working on his laptop and did not meet the same response. read more

For those of you who are Freya fans over on Western Ave, this is a good sister cafe though not quite as good. It is much larger with a Nordic modern design with the same menu and pastries. Unfortunately it doesn't make it to the 5 stars that Freya does. First , they blast club music very loud at all hours. Struggling in for that first lovely Java fix in the morning hurts the ears and head. Second, though the coffee beans are the same I don't know why but the lattes are not as good as Freya's. It must be the machine, settings or baristas or some combination of those. read more
