Sandwiches are among the best around and the coffee drinks are first rate. Friendly staff that is happy to answer questions. Get there early for best selections because just like the European counterparts, waste is minimized, quantities are limited, and if you don't get up in time, it is your own fault. The best spinach and cheese croissant!!! The cheese wasn't too overpowering or too salty. The croissant was on the denser/chewier side rather than airy, which is how I prefer it! This was the perfect pastry for an easy and light breakfast. It wasn't too oily at all. I came in the morning around 8:30am and later again near 11:30am and it seemed like they had different pastries at the different times! The croissants were near sold out by 11:30am, and they had brought out their puffs. I need to to try the jalapeno cheddar cheese puff next time! The drip coffee was so delicious. I would love to come back to ask if they offer refills for free or at a discount. There was a good amount of seating, but I'm not sure if you could study/work here because I didn't pay attention to if they had wifi/outlets/a bathroom. This one has been in my list forever, but it's really out of the way for me, so never had a chance to stop by and never thought of coming here just for this. Anyway, today I was here for my daughter's Suzuki violin institute thing at Seattle Pacific University and I was pleasantly surprised to find it one block away! Well, I have to say that it actually confirmed my impressions from seeing the pictures on Yelp. The pastries and cakes are very "basic", almost home made kind of feeling. By looking at the selection you don't think at a pro pastry chef creating delicious art, you think of an amateur baker baking for passion. Upon inspection, I decided to get a Boller and a breve Cortado. The Boller is a puffy round baked pastry filled with vanilla pastry cream and topped with chocolate icing. It was good, but it confirmed again the homemade feeling I had. Pastry cream was very light and not rich, the pastry shell was unremarkable and the chocolate icing on top was very tough, so not very easy to bite without breaking up and separating completely from the pastry. I mean, at the end I enjoyed it, but overall I was a bit disappointed, expecting the level of quality comparable to the few French bakeries in the Seattle area. I've visited Byen Bakeri several times, and what really makes it stand out is the incredible selection of Scandinavian pastries that are hard to find anywhere else. The variety is impressive, ranging from custom wedding cakes to savory sandwiches. I often stop by just to grab a couple of cookies--I really love their Thumbprints. I've also tried their bread and cakes, including the Princess Cake, a delicious traditional Swedish cake made with raspberry jam and marzipan. They can get busy and items tend to sell out close to closing time, but most of the time I still find great options. Nordic themed, it's a delightful taste of old country baking. Prepare yourself, however, I believe they do things extra-sweet over there, because that's how everything in here tastes. We had to abandon our plans for the morning, so our first stop was here, which went swimmingly well (see what I did there). They make a fabulous lingonberry tart, but the items that really stand out are the cream puff, the princess cake and the onion cheese puff. We love Byen Bakery!! They are hands down the best cake / pastry shop in all of seattle and maybe Washington!!! I'm serious! My ex husband spent days searching for the best cake place because he was disappointed with another bakery that was in Bellevue. Tina from Byen reassured us that they could make our custom cakes ( raspberry butter cream frosting with a strawberry / white cake base with fresh strawberries ). We came to Byen just because we were in the area and wanted to try a new bakery. We were so pleasantly surprised. The first thing we noticed is that all the food is priced well. We didn't feel like we were getting gouged for a cookie or a cheese puff. The coffee was priced pretty standardly. In terms of quality, all the food was great, we had the jalapeño cheese puff, the sprinkle cookie and the thumbprints (I think that's what they call them). Only the thumbprints weren't for me. The coffee was solid but half of my 16 oz cup was just frothed milk so it was more like 8 oz, which was a little dissapointing. You'd expect the parking situation here to be difficult but when we came here the street parking wasn't bad, seemed like most people just walked in on foot so the street parking wasn't packed. There wasn't a ton of seating so plan for maybe having to do a to-go order. But they do have both indoor and outdoor seating so that was nice read more

Love this bakery! They have a lot of delicious options! My husband and I came on a rainy day. We were able to find some street parking which can be difficult depending on the day/time. Service is friendly and patient. They have indoor tables/seating perfect to enjoy your pastry/coffee there. They have such a big variety of yummy treats and breakfast sandwiches available. We had a very unfortunate experience at Byen. We came at 6:45 on Saturday (15 minutes after they opened), and there was literally nothing available. To make it worse, when we asked the cashier how long it would be she walked as slowly as she could to ask the baker. We were told it would be another 15 minutes. We came because we recently learned about Semlor, and Byen Bakeri was one of the few places that served it. It was a brioche style bun, filled with whipped cream, and a slice of marzipan - so delicious, as was their cardamom latte, and cheesy jalapeño bread. If I lived closer to the area, I would come here all the time! The only downside is parking kinda sucks here, as is typical of old Seattle neighborhoods. I had a coffee and sweet roll that was covered in pecans. The roll had plenty of cinnamon and the perfect sweetness. Service very accommodating to answer questions and patient with my inability to make a decision. A few tables inside and outside contributed to a cool bakery vibe. Went last wknd, waited an hour for them to open. Finally walked over and a note stated they wouldn't be opening until 9:00. Uh No. Went today, dropped friend off killed another hour. Waited until 5 after. Went in and they only had ONE item in the window. I worked at Engstrom's Bakery (ie Larsen's Bakery/Loyal Heights area) we always had everything ready and in the windows upon opening. Went there last weekend, after Byen late opening. I had to sit and wait for them to bring more items out. I was wanting Swedish almond tartlets, nope. I wanted Swedish Limpa Rye, again nope. I was very disappointed. I got a few croissants, which are delicious and very crispy and flaky. I asked for a piece of Princess cake as well and did not receive. Would I make another trip from Kent, no. Uh oh, did this bakery actually steal Bakery Nouveau's thunder of being my personal favorite bakery that I've ever tried (so far)??? I think it did! :O Granted, as much as I love croissants (especially the twice-baked one at BN) I think I love danishes more. With that being said, the danishes here are *aMAziNG*! I tried the lingonberry and marionberry ones and what I really like about them is that the fruit fillings aren't overly sweetened and I could actually see some fruit bits. Perfectly soft and chewy danish bread and it even has some croissant-like inner layers to it. I also tried the tomato & feta cheese pastry, which leans more towards croissant style with how crispy it is. Though, what's unique about this pastry bread is that it's like a cross between a traditional croissant and a soft parmesan-crusted breadstick....idk how else to explain it lol. This along with the tomato and feta.....I mean, do I have to directly tell you that this one is a must-try?? :p Pastries will bring you back by about $7 each, which is a bit high compared to the pricing at other bakeries. The thing is that these pastries are really hefty!! I was particularly curious on how much the danishes weigh (these were exceptionally heavy) and using my kitchen scale they're about 1/2 lb each! Stopped to kill some time and got a small coffee which was alright and cookie that I will say was quite good and this is with the fact I don't care much for chocolate chip. What I think is cool is that whatever bread you're interested in and they don't have. If you request it, they bake it for you to pick up. We've been to this delightful Scandinavian bakery a couple of times when visiting friends, and also when we were doing a home school unit on Norway. This bakery is awesome! It's located at the bottom of Queen Anne hill right along Nickerson. They have an amazing array of baked goods that range from Viking shaped cookies, to tons of different breads, all the way to relatively fancy/extravagant desserts that you would expect to find at a high-end restaurant. The array of colors and flavors is enough to make the heart sing on even the dreariest of Seattle days! There's not a lot of seating inside, but it's a relatively easy spot to get in and out of. There's a few parking spots out front along the road, and plenty within a block or so. Whether you love the Scandinavian countries, or prefer the warmer, more southern European countries, this is a place that will not leave you disappointed. I refuse to wait on a line for anything, unless there is a Beatles reunion, which I doubt will happen. Thus, when I saw the line outside Sea Wolf, early on a rainy Sunday morning, I bolted. Looking for a bakery close to Sea Wolf I had not yet experienced, I came upon Byen Bakeri, of Scandinavian origin. I knew about Kringles from once living near Racine, Wisconsin, and was intrigued by the ethnic uniqueness of Byen Bakeri. The drive was quick from Wallinford/Fremont, with easy on street parking. Small and charming, the kitchen has an open window to the small waiting area. With masks on, it's difficult to be charmed by waitstaff, unfortunately adding to the robotic nature of our increasingly linear culture. Restaurant servers donning masks, will have to work extra hard, once dining opens up in Seattle. Byen Bakeri was fun, with interesting pastries on offer. I ordered an assortment of stuff, along with two slices of mocha layer cake and two baguettes. Byen Bakeri has a sweet tooth. Everything was incredibly sweet, and my sugar buzz was uncomfortable all day. I don't like very sweet pastries. The baguette had a soft crust, again not my favorite. I like everything crispy.
