Came here with my friends for lunch on a Friday, and had an overall just alright experience. The chicken kebab was a mixed bag - the best part of the meal was the chicken, which was seasoned very well and super tender. However, the bread and service weren't quite there - we were one of two parties in the restaurant and had to ask for our check after waiting for a while.

This place is bangin' for real!!! I have no idea why we haven't tried it til now, but our bad. The eggplant dip and bread they start you out with is delicious. I could eat an entire bucket of it. The hummus was smooth and fresh. The kabob, just as delicious! Rice was cooked perfectly and included veggies divine. I can't stress enough how much we loved this local spot. Can't wait to come again soon!!!

Absolutely amazing restaurant with such helpful service. This was our first time trying Turkish cuisine and the servers answered our questions and helped walk us through some dishes that were new to us. The Kofte kebab was so tender and well seasoned! We also loved their tzatziki and schug! The seating area is a bit snug but it adds to the family feel, and their patio is greatly shaded. We all absolutely LOVED the complimentary Turkish carrot dip and bread (not pictured) it was so refreshing and flavorful, a perfect medley of vegetables. Our table also loved the Beef Kebab, Lamb Wrap, Chicken Panini, and Imam Bayildi!! We can't wait to bring all our friends here!

Recently had dinner with girlfriends here, and it was one of the best meals I had all year. We shared plates and probably eight close to the whole menu. Everything was absolutely amazing and slightly different than what you would get at most Mediterranean restaurants in Chicago. You could tell there is a level of authenticity that I'd be hard to find elsewhere. I can't stop thinking about how great this place was.

Revisited again.. this time time the food was just okay; didn't feel like the first few times. The food didn't taste as fresh and everything came out extremely fast (maybe because we were there noon on a Friday) we ordered creme brulee for dessert and it was the worst I've had, super sweet, and water down at the bottom not cooked all the way through. I hope they aren't loosing their consistency.

I have been several times to Café Istanbul. I have also visited Turkey many many times. Cafe Istanbul does have good food but they are currently nickel and dimming people 18% service charge is inexcusable. They are charging a credit card service fee and the brunch was mediocre and small was $30 per person(no meat, bread, fruit, eggs). This is Turkish food. This is nothing gourmet. It is good, but I felt totally overcharged and that there was no fun and being there by paying all these service fees. I had Manti and Sheppard's salad $35 + their added 18%. I can tip them what I want. They don't need to add a tip onto my dinner/lunch. Too costly for one person ...charge charge charge unfortunate

Big portions for affordable prices, delicious food, and you get seated fast on most days even though the restaurant is never really empty. There's indoor seating & outdoor seating with large heat lamps. I've been here twice - once for brunch and again for dinner, same menu except brunch has a turkish breakfast option. Every meal comes with carrot dip & bread, which for the record, is really good bread & dip. We've ordered the islim sarmasi (eggplant stuffed with beef in a tomato sauce), the mixed platter (we got a meat & seafood mixed platter, comes with scallops, lamb, steak, shrimp), the sogurme (smoked eggplant dip), and the iskender (thinly cut & sliced meat in hot tomato sauce). We also ordered the turkish tea. 1 entree and an appetizer are huge portions and probably good for 2 people. Every dish was delicious, but I'd recommend everyone to ordee the sogurme most of all - super smooth smoked eggplant dip, with some sort of oil, and fresh hot walnuts on top. By far my favorite thing on that menu. They have turkish breakfast that looks super good & comes with a large variery of items. We didn't get it, but saw others that did, and looks like a great bang for your buck at $30 per person. Service is awesome. A great, reliable mainstay on division, and also casual enough to drop in on at any time.

This Chicago Turkish place has a very cozy patio and also indoor atmosphere. We tried several of the dishes including the lahmacun (a Turkish flatbread), the Adam kebap which is the most famous of the Turkish kebaps, the mantı which are like small Turkish dumplings, and the lentil soup. All were exceptional! The service was great as well! Can't wait to go back and try their kahvaltı (Turkish breakfast).

A well maintained establishment with a wide menu selection, filling servings & personable service! They serve homemade bread & baba ghanoush as a complimentary appetizer while you look through their menu. The main courses were new to me but both dishes were made up of lamb & carb/bread. The Lahmacun was a great appetizer reminded me of an open face burrito or a turkish version of pizza. The iskender reminded me slightly of spaghetti except the noodles were cubes of bread and instead of ground meat it is thinly sliced lamb. The dish was served with yogurt to balance out the acidic sauce of the tomato. I paired the baba ghanoush with all the bites & enjoyed the distinct turkish taste. The restaurant definitely attracted a good flow of locals!

A lovely neighborhood spot with solid food, excellent service, reasonable prices, and an awesome outdoor patio vibe for the warmer weather! We ordered the following dishes- - Sogurme (4.4/5) - Turkish Delight (4/5) - Manti (4.5/5)- probably my favorite dish of what we ordered. It was unique in the combinations of flavors and textures. - Kuzu Shish (4.3/5) They serve BOTH complimentary bread + dip to start and complimentary dessert to end, which we really appreciated! The bread was soft, fresh, and warm, and the dip was solid and flavorful. The dessert, a small, soft honey almond cookie, was tasty too. Overall, the service was fast and so friendly. It's a place I'd return to for a reliably solid meal experience in every facet.

02/28/24 - Tonight my wife & I went to Cafe Istanbul @ 2014 W Division Ave for dinner. I've had this restaurant on my radar for several years. Well tonight was the night & Cafe Istanbul more than lived up to my expectations. The food was outstanding. They brought us fresh bread w/a dip to die for made of yogurt w/julienne cut carrots, green onions, garlic....it was absolutely delicious. I could have made a meal of this by itself it was that good. In addition we ordered the following dishes Islim Sarmasi - Braised lamb shoulder wrapped in eggplant served with/basmati rice. Doner - Lamb & Veal combined seasone and cooked w/basmati rice, shredded red cabbage, julienne cut carrots, & dill yogurt sauce. This came w/2 piece of paper thin flat bread. I wrapped this w/the lamb, veal red cabbage, carrots & yogurt dill sauce & made a Turkish taco (lol Turkish taco Wednesday). The servings sizes are very generous & both of us will be able to make another meal from the take home leftovers. *They also have lunch menu which is less than the dinner menu. The food was outstanding as was the service & ambiance of the restaurant. This was one of the best meals I've had in a long time. We will definitely be back again soon.

We came an hour before closing but the food was still stunningly fresh. Quality in every bite, each dish distinct marination just enough not to cover the honesty of the meats. We had the chefs mixed grill. It came with beef medallions(good),shrimp(good), chicken white meat(beyond good and juicy), lamb(excellent), Scallops(amazing), kofta(possibly the best ever). Kofta for the uninitiated is ground beef and lamb. Even the rice was delectable. One caveat parking on a Saturday night on Division St. is a bitch.

Visited some friends and was asked what I would if there was a cuisine I was interested in going to and I immediately said Turkish. Good Turkish cuisine is hard to come by I feel in the Twin Cities and whenever I travel, I like to find a good Turkish restaurant. So my friend recommended this one as it was one he had wanted to try. So the three of us went to check it out. Its a small dining hall but bright and clean with white table cloths. Fairly busy but we had an reservation so we were seated right away. Got our waters and the server asked for drinks. I had a couple of questions on the drinks but the server didn't have many suggestions as such. Ended upo with the revolver which was a good cocktail. For appetizer, we ordered the Lahmacun for the table. Very tasty. The beef was spiced really well, the bread was crispy and and plenty of it to go around between the 3 of us. For entree we ordered one each and the were all very good. The kebab was moist and flavorful. The Islim Saramasi was a unique dish and was tasty. The lamb was tender and the eggplant was not overdone. A good balance of flavors. My Iskender was exactly what i was looking for. It's one of my childhood favorites and any time I get to have it, I am all for it. Good place with fast service and great food. Next time I am in Chicago, I would certainly make this on my list of places to visit for some good turkish food.

Everything was amazing. Quality of the food was great. Our server Murat was definitely professional and he knows what he's doing. I spent half of my life in Hotel and Restaurant businesses and Cafe Istanbul needs to keep him for all costs. Food was really good and fresh. Taste was definitely delicious. We have to go back to CA tomorrow but you guys will see us again on our next trip! read more

Great Turkish restaurant find in Chicago. Love the food Adana was cooked perfectly and my daughter loved her Iskender. She said it tastes better than the ones in Turkiye. Cagla and Emir were superb and top notch service bravo guys. Ambiance also very good, especially sitting outside in a nice evening. I highly recommend this place who loves Turkish food. I can't wait to visit my daughter again so we can come back to Cafe Istanbul. read more

As frequenters of Cafe Istanbul, I want to give my full support of this restaurant. Their entire menu is truly excellent. This is a special kind of restaurant, where the consistency is strong from appetizers to entrees to all desserts. Definitely try the Lahmacun, sogurme, the lamb- shank or cag kebab. There are so many great options to try. Amir is a fantastic representative of cafe Istanbul, and he has helped us work our way through the entire menu over our past several visits. His service and hospitality is superb. If you get the chance to sit out on the patio- I would recommend it. Good ambiance for a social dinner. read more

A great place for authentic Turkish cuisine. They have a large dining room with large windows and when the weather is nice they have a large outdoor patio. You get some delicious bread with your meal. We tried a seafood salad which was packed with a variety of seafood. The onion kebab was delicious lamb with a fantastic sauce and the Beyti kebab which is skewered lamb. Everything was well seasoned with outstanding flavor. Anything that is grilled has the perfect charred flavor cooked in. This is a great place to stop for lunch or dinner. read more

I've had takeout from Cafe Istanbul during the pandemic (I forget the name of what I had but it was some kind of tasty pasta) , I've been on Valentine's Day for their fixed menu (the fennel soup was incredible), and finally we recently dined in for lunch which solidified my love of this place. Everything was delicious! We had the mujaver (zucchini pancakes), iskender, and chicken kebab. I would order everything again, but especially the iskender! I never knew bread, tomato sauce, meat, and yogurt could taste so good!! The actual restaurant is a nice place with a pretty sizeable covered patio. Service is attentive and nice, we never waited too long for anything. If I had only one request it'd be bring back the fennel soup please! I dream about it! read more

Excellent flavor, great outdoor space, good feel, and the food is delicious. If you follow me, you know, I try Middle Eastern food from everywhere, especially Shawarma. Your rice here is perfectly cooked with chickpeas added nothing over the top. But there is a dip that looks like a baba ghanouj it's not baba ghanouj, or hummus, it's just a bread dip, and it has cherry, tomatoes, horseradish, and a bunch of other things, and it is fantastically delicious. everything is fresh. Absolutely five stars if you're used to eating Middle Eastern food but are looking for a very unique rice with a unique flavor, I would recommend Mandi house, but please do not interpret this post as anything, but excellence, in flavor and food from this place. read more

I have been here 6 times. Everything is great, but if there is one thing you must try it's the Cag Kabob. It may not be on the lunch menu, so be sure to ask. They'll happily serve it to you. In terms of appetizers, the Pide with sucuk is quite generous and tasty. I did not try the Turkish coffee or baklava so I can't comment on dessert. Remember Cag Kabob. After a fun dinner at Machine, we came here for dessert and tea. Although we only had baklava and Turkish tea served in beautiful tulip shaped glasses, Cafe Istanbul was amazing! We dined at their previous location near Clark/Halsted and knew that their food was top notch. This new location decor is definitely a step up and above the previous restaurant. Beautiful decor, white table cloths, attentive staff. Let's talk about the baklava! So fresh and delicious! It just melted in my mouth. Complimentary tea was a nice touch. We are looking forward to coming back in the near future for a full meal. read more

This is a great place to dine in but NOT to order delivery. It's the second time we order delivery from Cafe Istanbul and the food somehow gets lost. More than 2 hours for a simple delivery is unacceptable. After the first hour and a half we called the restaurant twice for the order status and the person answering the phone was unable to track the order. "What can I say?" was her answer. If this restaurant can't keep up with the delivery orders, they shouldn't be offering them. Again, I do love this place but they should do something with their delivery service. read more

The service is excellent...they are very attentive! They are also generous...they bring out some delicious. Read and the carrot/garlic dip to begin, which is delicious. We eat lots of Turkish food, so personally, I would probably give the food a 3 and the service a 5, so we averaged 4. Nothing else was spectacular that I'd recommend visiting. We visited here for the weekend late lunch. We parked the assigned parking but the staff guy who was watching the parking was so mean and evil. Because we parked there for lunch and just left the car and leave and come back within a minutes but the guy insisted that we should get fined over$100 since we did not intend to dine here. So we went into restaurant and ask another staff to handle that. We didn't know what the service staff did about that but we didn't get fined.it definitely was not right since we had lunch there and payed for it, yet why should we accused to be pay the fine? So our lunch was not enjoyable because of that parking guy.Never be back again. read more

On a walk, stumbled upon this small but nice, clean cafe. When we got seated, not only did we bread but a free eggplant appetizer that was insanely delicious! And the oh so tender Lamb liver (Arnavut Cigeri) with the Turkish feta salad and Lahmacun made the perfectly balanced lunch. Prices were reasonable as well. Will def go again! read more

We love this place. The food is really good, plenty of bread and always surprises w desserts in our to-go order. We only do take out and its fresh - never disappoints. Love the Turkish salad & the Caesar. Chicken kabob, grilled calamari, and the lach (sp? w minced meat is so lovely). We've tried many of the other dishes and always enjoy. read more

I have ordered from this place a couple of other times and the food was pretty good. Today I ordered a sea food salad, a lentil soup, and a chicken kebab. The chicken kebab was pretty good as always, but the lentil soup and the sea food salad were pretty disappointing. The sea food had no taste or even salt, and it also had a very strange smell, not the regular sea food smell, it was far from appetizing. The lentil soup also was far from what I expected. I'm still ordering from there since the kebabs are really good, but never these two dishes again. read more

Have heard wonderful things about this place so I decided to check it out for myself. The restaurant itself is a bit small (tables close together), but the food was incredibly worth it. The portions were huge and the flavors were out of this world! Reasonably priced for the amount of food you receive. I adore this place! Turkey is my favorite place to visit so I was so happy when this spot opened! There is a really nice patio and the inside has nice decor and music that adds to the ambiance. I'm a vegetarian so I always get some lentil soup and a salad along with an entree. I've had the imam bayeldi which is an eggplant dish and also the risotto fungi. Both amazing. My friend went with me last time and got the rainbow trout and the sea scallops app. She loved both. The service is always great and friendly. I just love this restaurant. Please go check them out! Delicious mezze, mains and more at this authentic Turkish café. I dined with my good friend from Istanbul, who helped select my favorite dishes from my visit to Turkey many years ago. The Su Boregi was moist, cheesy and flavorful and all of the salads were fresh and lightly dressed with lemon juice and olive oil. Plenty of outdoor seating and wait staff wore masks and tables were appropriately distanced. Clean restaurant and attentive staff. Prices were reasonable and they offer everything for takeout. read more

One of the best restaurants I've been to in Chicago! Service: Service was outstanding, we opted to sit outside and enjoy the cool air. Nice spot for authentic Turkish food in Wicker Park with outdoor/covered seating. I was very impressed with the flavors of everything we tried. To start, they offered us complimentary warm bread with a ratatouille-esque vegetable spread. I would visit the restaurant again just for this bread dish! The Imam Bayeldi (roasted baby eggplant stuffed with veggies and pine nuts) was excellent. We also tried the Su Boregi - homemade dough filled with fresh feta and dill. It had more of a noodle like texture than we had expected, but was still very good. At the end of dinner, our server offered us yet another complimentary dish - a custard dessert with ice cream. Cafe Istanbul is simply spectacular! The grilled calamari is perhaps the best I have ever had in Chicago! The Cag Kebab dinner was simply amazing and the portions are great as well ( 3 generous strips of perfectly cooked lamb cuts). The Efes Turkish beer was amazing- first time I have ever tried it. Finally, the Turkish coffee was absolutely delicious as one can expect from Turkish coffee! I can't wait to return to Cafe Istanbul. Growing up in Germany with a rich heritage of Turkish cuisine, I've always had a special place in my heart for the flavors and aromas that remind me of home. Recently, my curiosity led me to Cafe Istanbul in Chicago, a place that consistently tops the list when you Google "Turkish restaurant in Chicago." Despite my initial reservations, I decided to give it a try on a warm Friday evening. Upon arrival, we chose to sit inside despite the open patio due to the short-staffed appearance of the restaurant. Despite its quiet ambiance, the lack of staff did not deter us from exploring the menu. Having been familiar with Turkish cuisine since childhood and having a basic grasp of the language, ordering was a breeze for me. However, my experience took a turn for the worse as I couldn't help but notice the unwarranted stares, snarks, and laughs from some of the patrons. While I'm no stranger to judgmental glances, the atmosphere at Cafe Istanbul became increasingly uncomfortable. Undeterred, I ordered the Lahmacun, a dish I know well. Unfortunately, it fell short of expectations, tasting surprisingly bland. Despite my initial excitement to explore more dishes, the judgmental atmosphere created by what seemed to be regular patrons became too much to bear. The constant stares and subtle mockery made the dining experience less enjoyable. As a result, I decided against ordering more and opted to pay and leave. In summary, while the food at Cafe Istanbul was passable, the overall experience was marred by the uncomfortable atmosphere and the apparent disdain from some of the regular patrons. It's disheartening to have such an underwhelming experience in a place that should celebrate the joy of sharing culture through food. Perhaps, with improvements in both service and ambiance, Cafe Istanbul could become a more welcoming haven for those seeking an authentic Turkish dining experience in Chicago. read more

NOT COVID CAREFUL. A tall champ who seemed to be working there, kept on going on without a mask and stepping outside to smoke. Open kitchen. I could see one of the chefs had his mask under his chin, and the other under his nose. If i had noticed that first, i would have left. Unfortunately i looked for it when i had finished my food. The server was very good and careful. Food was OK. I have been lucky to have gone to Istanbul many many times before Covid so i know good Turkish food. This was my third or fourth time at this restaurant. I am fairly certain I had written reviews before but cannot find! I'd say food is at one or two star levels at the best.
