A meal at Julia's is always a treat. I had the caramel nut latte and a breakfast sandwich. Both were delicious. Service was fast and friendly. Not cheap ($12!) but worth it. Way better than the average small town cafe! This is our second time here. We stopped in for coffee a few years ago. Today we came for lunch and coffee. The cream of potato with bacon soup is out of this world delicious! So creamy and flavorful! I had the chicken salad and my friend had the Greek Tina. Both on fresh multi-grain bread that was soft and grainy! The sandwiches were unique and tasty. We also had the SnowBall Mocha- think old school marshmallow snowballs you are when you were a kid! I give them two stars because my sandwich tasted good but the bread hurt my mouth, my green tea was so hot that it was burning my hand through the cup sleeve and I couldn't drink it for an hour after my friend finished her drink and I used her left over ice to cool it down enough for me to drink. It's bust your own table we didn't know what to do with the plates so my friend said excuse me to a waitress and she looked straight at her and ignored her. (Could be my misconception). It was over priced for a sandwich and a "salad" (the 7 grain salad was a small cup of grains literally) I was expecting an actual salad but again that could very well be my misconception. When staff makes a simple order mistake, it is good policy to say "sorry", "we'll correct this right away" or one of many possible good customer service comments. Simple and proper etiquette. I stop here often and have never had an issue prior... but the no comment, rolling of the eyes, and distain glance while walking away really sort of blew my experience this AM (ordered sausage sandwich not bacon). Then to boot... the "toss my plate and walk away promptly" display by the cook put me over the top. Is it really that difficult to have polite conversation for some. A smile or acknowledgment can fix most issues on the spot. So my driving 20 minutes to experience this treatment is now in question for future precious Saturday mornings outings. I can handle the mistake and added timing, but the treatment... not so much. Food and coffee is good (not overly special). Pastries above average and always fresh... but I assume bought in and not made here. The experience of late... not so memorable or worth the $5 coffee and $8 breakfast sandwich. . read more

I'm going to say what a lot of people are saying...julias use to be one of our favorite places...recently they've changed...they've revamped their sandwiches and entire menu. They use to have one of the best vegetarian sandwiches that I have ever had...now it's a wrap and it's terrible. Furthermore, everything is premade now instead of made to order...so they run out of choices as the day goes on... Overall, they've ruined themselves with all their changes and are now very disappointing! They're new menu is limiting and their new sandwiches are premade and not tasty...also their bakery items aren't as good as they use to be either... Wow, we were so disappointed. Cafe Julia really needs some good management!! We have been coming here for years. The draw has been the food, coffee, good service and atmosphere. The last couple of visits left us thinking - why bother. Our order took about 20 minutes and while waiting several people got served arriving after us. When we got our food it was the wrong order. After getting the correct order, it was plopped in front of us with no "I'm sorry about the delay" or "how was the food". This was lunch time and they only had two people running the place. It was pretty hectic. One of the staff was continually on her cell phone. For the price they charge, this place should be first rate and it just isn't. I was hoping this would be more of a "local" spot than a tourist spot, but as evidenced by my mostly milk iced latte and the lack of service, it was disappointing for the price, i'm sad to say. En route to a wedding in traverse city, we stopped at cafe Julia. It was a nice deli with fresh made sandwiches. The price is steep for what you get but the decor is homey. Dan got the Panini with bacon, ham, and turkey and I got the harvest turkey. The sandwiches are made to order with white or wheat breads and a selection of 4 sides... a coleslaw, a mulitigrain salad (cous cous..etc), chips, and bean corn salad. The sides are 3 ounces. Cafe Julia had a nice assortment of cookies and pastries. I was good but my friends got the chocolate peanut butter mouse thing. It looked very good. We were four travelers from Indianapolis headed home from a cabin getaway New Year's weekend. We needed good coffee and a hot breakfast. Cafe Julia did not disappoint. First, their coffee is of the gourmet variety, and you can get any drink here you want. The hot chai was especially tasty. But the real can't-miss here is the selection of fresh pastries. We tried the chocolate croissants and an apple turnover - both delicious! We each got a hot breakfast sandwich - you can choose from extremely thick cut bacon or nicely flavored sausage, homemade croissants or homemade bagels. Definitely give this place a try! read more

Cafe Julia is my Starbucks away from home. I think some of the negative reviewers should give it a try again. Phoenix Street (same owners) is excellent too. This is my first review. I always thought I would use yelp just to look up information on places and not so much to review them myself. But, I have to be a long-time customer of café Julia, so I felt like this was necessary. I'm not sure where the summer morning girls went. Faith and TL, but I can say they are definitely missed. Those girls always served coffee with a smile and took time to get to know you, when they weren't busy with other customers. Those 2 were a great morning team and breath of fresh air. But now, It seems like no matter what time of day my wife and I come in, the new girls act like we are inconveniencing them and they're more interested in gossiping and eye rolling. We really love Julia's and their selection of pastries and I would love to give that alone five stars! It would be nice if if yelp would let us review different aspects of a business, because their coffee and food selection would get five stars, their customer service and new employees would get one. This is why I settled on the in between of three stars. Do better please so we don't feel the need to look for a new coffee spot when we are in town. read more

I really like Cafe Julia. Its just a great little coffee joint. I like sitting on the back deck when the weather's nice. The cranberry turkey sandwich is a personal favorite. I also love the creme brule. I was so close to getting my free coffee on my punch card, but then I moved out of S. Haven. I'm still hoping to finish it up next time I am in town. It's not a Starbucks and I definitely love to support local owned businesses whenever I can. read more

While visiting South Haven, I chose Cafe Julia in hopes of getting a great quality coffee - I loved what their website said about the sourcing of their coffee beans, so I was excited to try them out! However, there was an awkward lack of service here that left me really disappointed. Friends, I don't know what vibe y'all are going for, but you're not hitting it. Interacting with the staff felt like talking to a vacant, condescending mother who's trying to tell me what's best for me whether I like it or not. Yikes. Normally I wouldn't write reviews on places, but what took it for me was when I tried to turn down a plastic bag, preferring to save the plastic and just carry my purchases myself, and the cashier literally forced a plastic bag on us. It was such an awkward exchange - I felt rude not taking plastic, but, wow. Where are the recycling receptacles? Where are the environmentally friendly plastics? If you're going to require your customers to take bags, let's make the paper :) On your website, it sounds like you're passionate about making the word a better place and ethically sourcing your coffee. Let's focus on better customer service and better stewardship of the supplies you have. Even just adding some recycling options would be amazing! We can do better, Cafe Julia! read more

This place is trendy and fun but a little pricey for my tastes. $10 for a sandwich and a small bag of chips is a lot to pay but the food is good so for a treat, this place is a good one to head to. Their turkey with cranberry chutney is really quite tasty and fresh. They at least have that going for them. They make their own bread and all their ingredients are fresh. The coffee was very over priced. For 2 8oz coffees and a Danish, it was over $10. Even though this was a specialty coffee, I would drive somewhere else.
