We were determined to try as many smaller places in Saugatuck as we could. This place was high up on the list! They have a decent list of sandwiches to choose from. We ordered the tri tip grilled cheese and the macaroni and cheese grilled cheese sandwiches. The area to sit was really cute! Little picnic benches with umbrellas surrounding the cute little shack you order from. I think the people were nice...my husband did the ordering while we enjoyed the people watching. Everything was really good! I want to try the apple and brie grilled cheese sandwich next time!

Great little spot with lots of options. Quick services and your sandwich comes with potato chips. Get yourself some!

Went to the Grilled Cheese Shack for dinner. Food was great. Employees were very friendly, food came out quick and was fresh. Overall great vibe!

They left the paper in our grilled cheeses, and our food was kind of overpriced to not be that tasty. /: The atmosphere of the outdoor seating was great though.

The sandwiches were made on the spot and delicious. They had some nice tables in the shade and it was a great spot to have a lunch and take a break from shopping.

Looking for a quick, easy, delicious meal while out and about in Saugatuck? Look no further. The Grilled Cheese Shack is not only adorable but puts out some of the best grilled cheese sandwiches I have ever had. Combined with some tasty sides and cold beverage options, I've never been disappointed in my meal. And perhaps their biggest draw for me, in addition to the friendly service, is that they have a patio with plenty of seating to accommodate kids, pets, and parties of all shapes and sizes. I think there were 3-4 dogs enjoying the company of their families while we were dining most recently and it was so nice to see. And located so close to the river front park and chain ferry, taking your food to go to eat at any number of local parks and benches is always a good option too. Make sure to note they are not open outside of the summer (starting Memorial Day), so be sure to confirm that before planning a trip. It is definitely worth a visit and I know we will be back soon!

We went back in September but I remember it well. They had been out of almost everything and every cheese. The poor kid working the window felt so bad that they were out of so much so we decided to stay and order. So all four of us got Classic grilled cheese with cheddar and a cup of tomato soup. I'm 100% sure it was Campbell's tomato soup too so I was disappointed. It's a cute little shed with plenty of seating with picnic tables and umbrellas. The sandwich were cooked well and tasted fine but they weren't anything fancier than what you can make at home. The kettle chips were however the best part of the meal!

6:15 pm (Sunday) on June 22, 2025. So, far the hottest weekend of the summer. No one was here. Didn't take long at all. The Herb Goat Cheese Melt (added turkey) was delicious! Soo tasty! Each sandwich comes with kettle chips. The sandwich was huge & very filling. Would definitely recommend this neat little restaurant. FYI - there is only outside seating, but very shaded.

I mean, as good as advertised. Holy cow. One of our best meals in two trips to Michigan (Saugatuck…read moreand South Haven). All reservations were booked out for weeks when we had checked, but we showed up at opening and it sort of worked out. Let me explain.. A lot of other families had the same idea. Show up early, get in, get the kids fed early. It made for a line to check in at the host stand that looked concerning but it wasn't a crazy wait, ultimately. About 30 minutes. We still got what we wanted, a nice seat overlooking the water. One thing I'll say in that regard was there was a HUGE upfront rush, but then around 6:30 or so, the place had emptied out quite a bit. Might be useful knowledge if trying to time an entry here. ANYWAYS. The food. Phenomenal. So good. I stuck with standard fried chicken (ie not Nashville, not spicy) and it was amazing. Salty, well brined, flavorful. It even held up amazingly well cold out of the fridge the next day. Some of the best fried chicken I've had in years. The fries were insanely good as well. The greens (one of the side choices) were not my thing as they didn't have a lot of flavor. The only miss of the evening. My oldest enjoyed her burger, and my youngest thought the chicken was too spicy (read: peppery) but they've been uber picky lately so take that with a grain of salt (or pepper). Had a lovely cocktail here as well, called the Sunday Christian: Gin, Cocchi Americano, Bianco Vermouth, and orange bitters. I'm realizing I have failed you all but forgetting to mention the most glorious, buttery, flaky biscuit that comes with the fried chicken meal. It was a star of the show, and the only reason I'm just now mentioning it is that I ate it so quickly it disappeared into my memories. Wonderful place, and I'm sure we will go back next time in Saugatuck.

Don't fret, they have umbrellas on every outdoor table in case you're worried about being exposed to too much elements! Our waitress came over quickly and took our drink orders. I had the strawberry summer spritz which was a little more tart than I expected but it was a good summer cocktail. My husband had some sort of pear smash which he said tasted like pears and was good. I had the new item on their menu which was the lobster and shrimp roll and instead of the chips, I ordered some truffle fries ($3) with my meal. My husband had the chicken sandwich and subbed the chips with fries ($2). Outside of all the extra charges, I think this place was pretty great. Our food were both excellent and our drinks were tasty. We ordered another round after. I am just having a hard time understanding why the fries carried an extra charge. I get the truffle fries being extra but regular fries substitution seemed a bit much but okay. This is our second time being here. I was obviously not phased regarding the extra charges from a few years back but I honestly cannot remember if this was the case or not. Anyway, great food, good drinks, and a waterfront scene. You cannot beat that!

I feel like after a busy beach day in the sun, working up an appetite, this was ideal. It's darker in here but not in a bad way, just "out of the pure sunshine" kind of way. Service was nice and we were delighted to get right in. My kids were so hungry after defying us and not eating for what felt like days. That came to a halt here. My oldest got the grown up sized burger, and my youngest chicken tenders. We didn't hear a peep out of them for about 15 minutes, which is always nice. I can't say the food is earth shatteringly good or anything, but we all enjoyed it. It feels like a place where a little nostalgia plus the shine of vacation elevates it to me. Oh and beer prices were very fair too. The little animal crackers they brought out at the end were a hit as well. All in all, a classic, fun, friendly kind of spot that we very much enjoyed.

It would be nice if the sign had been a little more visible or if we had been redirected more kindly. We were sat immediately and even though I tend to hate high tops, the chairs were sturdy and comfortable. Between myself and my friends we ordered the grilled ham and cheese, the nutty salad, and the burger (with cheddar, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, mayo, ketchup, and mustard). We all loved our food and it came out quickly. I ordered my burger medium-well and it was cooked perfectly. Our server was attentive and made sure to refill our water frequently. At the end of our meal they gave us little cups of animal crackers, which was just the cutest touch! Overall loved and would totally return and recommend.

Pumpernickels is a vibe and a great place to sit a spell in the summer here in Saugatuck, but when it comes to the food, while it matches the vibe and is presented beautifully, tastes very average and is not value oriented aka on the spendy side. We came in as a party of 6 around 2pm and quickly got a table outside. Our server was sweet and kind, and quick to take our orders, but once that happened we really didn't see her all that much, which was frustrating. On top of that, the main dish on the menu that brought us here (goat cheese dip) was sold out after lunch, which was a major disappointment. We ordered the fried green tomatoes, deviled eggs, chicken sandwich (grilled), rueben, green bean salad, and a kids mac n cheese and chicken tenders. The best bites were the eggs and the green bean salad, but the portion on the salad was so petite that it was barely a meal for the person who ordered it. The chicken was dry and the sandwich incredibly generic. The reuben didn't have enough of the house corned beef and was also dry. Now I could be wrong here, but the fried green tomatoes seemed like a frozen product. with a uniform breading and cook, but the chicken fingers definitely were and the mac n cheese was quite literally Kraft. I'm going to hope that this is a hot dinner or brunch spot, because what we had was pretty disappointing. I was torn between here and the spot around the corner that featured a lot of local ingredients in a more casual setting, but chose this because it seemed to be more culinarily focused, and I was let down.

We got the crab and lobster dip plus the duck liver mousse for appetizers. Both were bland and the flavor non-comprehensive. The dip had little flavor and the texture was weird and chewy, did not taste like the crab and lobster was cooked that day (from experience). The duck liver mousse was decent, but fell flat on a full flavor alone, it was kindly complemented with the pickled cucumber and carrots but overall it wasnt the most impressive. We had the lake trout and the hanger steak. The lake trout was gamey, oddly flavorless but also had a strong musky flavor, severely under seasoned during cooking. The spinach and embellishments saved the dish from being totally inedible. Presentation was sad and sloppy. The steak with tallow fries was a joke. The meat was chewy/tough, the sauce tasted like nothing, and the fries tasted like they came straight out of the freezer section of Walmart (freezer taste included). Wedges or fingerlings would have been a far better pairing in our opinion. Both of our plates were left barely half finished and it turned into a date of being food critics lol. A positive was they did make a decent old fashioned (was more of a double), and their French 75 was fabulous. Overall, it was a joke. We love interesting new places with unique menu options. We chose this place for that reason. Unfortunately we felt it was a case of "quantity over quality". These dishes had so much potential, but it was by far our worst food experience of our trip.
