Lovely spot in Downtown Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island. Beautiful patio under large oaks shade the ample seating. The menu offers some local great island options including Mahi and shrimp. Service is always friendly and fast. If something isn't right, their southern hospitality will smooth things over and present a better option. Very charming eatery with customer friendly staff. My girlfriend wanted a salad so we stopped in. I had the Spicy Thai Noodles salad and she had the Karibo House salad with grilled chicken. Both, very good. We had a basket of fries for an app. Half Idaho and half sweet potato. What won me over was the waitress. So nice. My girlfriend had heartburn and asked for a place that sold Tums. On a sunny, warm Saturday, we were seated right around peak lunch time with no wait, which was very nice. The waiter was welcoming and friendly and took our order quickly.The atmosphere is quiet and quaint, and has a cozy feel. I was in the mood for something cool and crunchy because of the blazing florida sun, so I got the baja baby salad, sauce on the side. Sunday Brunch was exceptional. A word of caution, Karibo has a no reservations policy -- the first arrivals are the first seated. A 30-minute wait is not uncommon on the weekends. Go early -- go often -- this place is good. Cafe Karibo is pure ambience with a stunning outside dining area, with well spaced tables. Think Floribean when you order as there is a theme of Florida cuisine with a mix of the Caribbean tropics. The crab cake eggs benedict were a pleasing hit. The blackened Mahi Mahi Sandwich was moist, tender and delicious, served with sweet and russet potato fries. Our server, Brooklyn was superb and most helpful. Staff was excellent & agreed to let us put tables together on the back patio even after the hostess told us we would have sit separately. We do understand about not blocking an exit per fire code. The tables were placed away from the path to the exit. The back patio was very pleasant even though we prefer the ambiance of the front patio. 2 out of the 9 dishes ordered was subpar. I ordered the house salad with grilled chicken. The chicken was tasteless. I could not even eat it. The salad was ok at best. My nephew ordered Huevos Rancheros & it looked like they threw some slop on a dish. It was also not edible. I am sorry we should have taken pictures but it was a family gathering & we wanted to be in the moment. We have eaten here twice over the last month, and overall I would definitely go again. First: the atmosphere is great. The restaurant is mostly outdoors and feels like you are inside of a secret garden. There are fans and it's very shaded, and even in July we were fine being outside. The menu is a bit eclectic. There are bar foods as well as fancier entrees. My group has enjoyed several entrees from each part of the menu and find the grilled and blackened entrees to be delicious. However, the fried entrees aren't very seasoned and lack flavor. Don't let this stop you from visiting. The exception to this are the fries, and I love that they mix sweet potato fries with regular fries. The portions are also very big! Their Sangria is great. You can get it by the glass or by the pitcher. I highly recommend the red. Service was great both times. They do get a bit busy, but we never felt forgotten. read more

What do you do on a hot day in Savannah? Drive south to Florida. No seriously, I have never been to Fernandina Beach, why not go when it's blazing hot. I found myself a Cafe Karibo. It was not my first choice, but it was the right choice. Got seated right away outside in a shade spot with a umbrella table. The menu was not what I expected for a seaside venue, but the food was fun, fresh and exciting. Started with the soup of the day, shrimp bisque. The bisque came out hot and robust. Nice chunks of shrimp with a spicy kick. I should have gotten a bowl. Pro Tip: ask for an extra slice of bread, it's great for dipping in the soup. I also order the Crabby Con Queso. Yeah I know, seafood and cheese aren't supposed to work. But it did in this tasty dip. It came with a copious amount of chips that were coated with salty goodness. My only issue is that the dip could have been spicier, the bisque showed the chef is not afraid of a little heat. My main course was the Spicy Thai Noodles, as described, it is linguine tossed (more like marinated) in an Asian inspired ginger garlic lime sauce served cold. This was full of flavor, but could have used more veggies. The pasta was cooked perfectly. A chopped up chicken breast would have put this dish on the next level. But it was still very good. You can actually order a chicken breast as an add on. Next time. Also ordered were the Loaded Lentils. I was told it was very good. But raspberries would have been a nice touch. Everyone is critic. The service was superb. The server was so knowledgeable about the menu and tailored recommendations to everyone in the party of four. All perfect. She was always there when we needed something but respected out conversations and did not interrupt. The food was excellent. The duck carnitas tacos I ordered was one of the best dishes I have had in some time. The couscous salad I chose as a side complemented it perfectly. The others in our party had chili, Asian crunch salad, curried chicken salad wrap, and potato salad. The atmosphere was great. We were seated on a quiet outdoor patio with a fireplace, a nice touch for a December lunch. Our waiter was soft-spoken and failed to mention the specials, which was disappointing because when we overhead another waitress mention them, they sounded good! We started with drinks and the Crabby Con Queso as an appetizer. My cocktail was mediocre and the quality did not match the price. The crab dip was good, but nothing special, although the chips it came with were nicely seasoned. We both ordered the Karibo Burger, which was a mistake. The menu indicated that the burger could only be cooked medium well. When we inquired about this, our waiter informed us that this was per the health inspector. When our food came out, the hockey-puck patty clearly indicated that this was a frozen burger, which was extremely disappointing for a $16 price tag. I did like that you received a mix of both regular and sweet potato fries, but those were frozen as well. Overall, everything was edible, but felt overpriced for the quality. Very unhappy with the dining experience at Karibo today. Went for restaurant week. First our martinis were made with the wrong vodka then when the proper one did come the glass was half full. The I-10 draft was good. Got shrimp and grits and it was swimming in gravy the presentation was terrible. They gave use a extra bowl to remove the extra not tasty gravy,In my mind .The mahi-mahi was subpar the rice and onions were not cooked. Unbelievable. They did give us 10% off the $45 mahi-mahi meal. Not acceptable. As locals we are very disappointed in one of our favorite restaurants. Service was fine but the rest was unacceptable. Karibo has four positive aspects - interesting menu, fair prices, great service and dog friendly! What more could you ask for? We were in town at a pretty busy time of year and all of the restaurants were hoppin'. Lucky for us we walked by Karibo as a table opened on the outdoor patio and we sat right down with our pup in tow. We ordered the lentil salad with grilled chicken and a portobello mushroom sandwich.
